FOREIGN BODIES IN DOGS

I

t never fails to amaze me just what dogs will consume – and exactly how they manage to swallow what they do! The range of things is quite startling: Lego bricks (despite the sharp corners), socks (preferably dirty) are a real favourite, balls, children’s toys, bits of children’s toys (when it was presumably one step too far to neck the whole thing) – all these (along with the odd tampon maybe) are things that you can’t possibly think would be attractive to a dog, other than they offer a certain challenge. Objects like bones (the more decayed the better), peach stones, corn on the cob, seaweed, large bits of tree root – well, you can just imagine that apart from offering an equal challenge, they may also have a certain gastronomic reward!

know they shouldn’t, but they can’t help themselves, you’re not looking, and down it goes… And then whatever seemed to be such a good idea at the time comes to a stop in the small intestine. Sometimes these blockages can be palpated when you feel the abdomen – yet they’re not painful generally. But in the case of socks, gloves, knickers and other such niceties, when the foreign body is quite soft, they’re much more difficult to palpate. X-rays are usually taken to identify whether there is anything there, if so what it might be, and whereabouts in the guts it is, sometimes with very helpful results:

DIAGNOSIS

Sometimes an owner will bring in their dog asking us to check them out as they have seen them eating something they shouldn’t – this frequently goes for children’s toys – and / or a dog is presented to us that has been vomiting for a day or two, and a foreign body is suspected. Once the ‘thing’ has been swallowed, then very occasionally it can lodge in the gullet, but this is extremely uncomfortable for the dog, as you might think, and we see these cases very soon after the incident has happened. They are also very challenging as the oesophagus (gullet) is easily torn by any sharp edges and so they sometimes have to be removed by endoscopy – that’s putting a camera down the gullet with a wire basket attached, to loop over the item and gently pull it back into the mouth. What can possibly go wrong?! Much more often the foreign body goes into the stomach, and can either stay there, or else the powerful contractions of the stomach wall drive it further down into the gut. In the meantime the dog appears relatively unconcerned, apart from the vomiting, and lack of anything coming through at the other end, although they will often carry on drinking OK and keeping fluids down. That’s the point when we tend to examine these cases, and all too often an owner will not be aware that their dog has hoovered up a bit of bone discarded by a fox, as they tend to eat such things very quickly! They

4 FALMOUTH Wave

is very easy to detect on x-rays and should go through the length of the gut OK unless there is an obstruction. If you take several x-rays over a few hours and find the barium is only getting to a certain point along the intestines and no further, you know there’s something blocking it.

TREATMENT

If the dog has been vomiting for a day or two and there definitely is something in the guts, the only thing to do is to remove it surgically. Before any surgery is performed, however, it’s best practice to do some blood analyses to make sure that the electrolyte (sodium / potassium / chloride) balance is OK (and if not then to correct it) and make good any dehydration with intravenous fluids. Then we can give a full general anaesthetic and do a laparotomy – opening up the abdomen – identifying the piece of gut where the obstruction is lodged, and then cutting into the gut to take out the offending article. Very occasionally the piece of bowel where the bone / Lego / marble has lodged is starting to decay, so that too has to be removed and the two ends of the gut sutured together. Once the obstruction is removed then everything else is stitched back together again and all, fingers crossed, will be well, as recovery is usually pretty quick. We usually hospitalize dogs until they are eating and passing stools. Although complications do occur, thankfully they seem to be rare, and results are generally excellent. Which means that your pet will be on the lookout again for the smelly sock, the chewable ball, the delectable just-can’t-resist-it bit of bone….

As you can see from both of these radiographs, the foreign body is quite easy to spot – in the one case it was a marble, and in the other it was several pieces of chop bones blocking a lot of gas wanting to get through! Sometimes it’s not so easy to detect any obstruction, which is where ultrasound scans are useful, or also to give the dog some barium sulphate to swallow, as this

WHAT ABOUT CATS?

Because cats are far more selective about what they eat then foreign bodies are quite rare. But occasionally they’ll chew some thread with a needle attached and manage to swallow the needle; or if they’re hunters they’ll swallow some part of their prey (like an entire skull!) that doesn’t go very far down…. You have been warned!

Decorative Candlestick

With christmas just around the corner we thought we would get you in the festive mood! We’ve used Inka Gold wax to embellish and decorate plain wooden candlesticks and a wall sconce. You can however use wax on most surfaces. 1. Using a make up sponge, dab into the wax and then rub it into the candlestick. Using a sponge lets you get the wax into the finer details.

2. After covering the candlestick in one colour of wax, you can create highlights and a burnished effect by rubbing another colour of wax over it. This was done using a green base with a red wax on top. 3. Also, you can use the wax with a stencil to produce intricate designs. The sconce was decorated with pale gold wax and green detail was applied using a leaf stencil.

All items on show at Crafty Corner, along with hints and tips for future projects.

Newton's News

T

he glorious weather of this year’s summer seems a distant memory as we wrap ourselves up against the chilly winter weather. The changes we are seeing in our weather are a poignant reminder of how our climate is changing. Storms of a different nature have been in the news recently as we remember the global financial crisis. 2008 will be looked back on with interest for many years to come. Not only was Barack Obama elected as the first black USA President and China hosted the Beijing Olympic Games but something remarkable also happened in our Parliament. The UK's landmark domestic Climate Change Act passed into law with near unanimous cross-party support, setting an ambitious legally-binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050. A radical political consensus on climate action was achieved, and has been preserved ever since. A recent report from the London School of Economics presents a clear case that this ground-breaking act has been instrumental in advancing climate action globally over the past decade and has provided a framework through which the UK has led the world in reducing emissions, while continuing to strengthen our economy. But we must never be complacent. The case for climate action is unequivocal and we must continue not only to drive emissions reduction at home, but overseas too. As a key part of our Industrial Strategy, we are investing more than £2.5bn to support low carbon innovation through our Clean Growth Strategy ensuring that the UK continues to lead the way in cutting emissions while creating well paid jobs. Our low carbon sector now supports almost 400,000 jobs across the country, and the sector is still growing. These businesses include Kensa, the UK’s most popular ground source heat pumps brand, and Carley’s Organic, which produces chutneys, mustards and pickles in a dedicated organic eco-factory. I am proud that both businesses are based in my constituency. By 2030, the UK’s clean economy has the potential to support up to two million jobs whilst generating £170bn of annual exports. Creating electricity from the hots rocks beneath Cornwall is something I have been supporting for a long time and I am excited that the first commercial drilling is due to take place in United Downs this autumn. This innovation could contribute significant amounts of carbon free energy and more well paid jobs. Cornwall already hosts a wealth of renewable energy resources including wind, solar, geothermal and marine. Cornwall now contributes more than 768 MW of sustainable energy generation to the UK energy mix, with approximately 25 per cent in local ownership, including 8 MW of Council-owned solar panels and more than 1MW owned by community groups supported by England’s first community energy revolving fund with

8 FALMOUTH Wave

£2.5 million council funds. There are 200 community groups around the country already generating their own energy to the benefit of the local community. A great example in Truro & Falmouth is Transition Ladock and Grampound Road which was awarded £500,000 to install low carbon technologies in the community. The power sector too has been truly transformed in the last 10 years thanks to the direction of travel established in the Climate Change Act. Five years ago, dirty coal accounted for 40 per cent of our electricity, now this figure stands at 7 per cent, and through our Powering Past Coal Alliance will be eliminated altogether. In the place of coal an unprecedented level of investment in renewables means that we now have the biggest installed offshore wind capacity in the world. Indeed, official statistics show that 2017 was a record-breaking year for renewables - with over 50 per cent of electricity produced from low carbon sources - an impressive 29 per cent coming from renewables. Between 1990 and 2017, the UK reduced its emissions by more than 40 per cent while growing the economy by more than two thirds - the best performance in the G7 on a per person basis proving that economies can be grown in a clean, green way. Long term government planning is the key to our ongoing success. Too often, governments are constrained by spending targets or the threat of upcoming general elections, and it was precisely this short termism which the Climate Change Act overcomes. Business, community and public bodies all have a role to play but so does each and every one of us. Small changes in our daily routine can add up to significant benefits for our environment. Climate Vision, a local organisation, has produced ten pledges - actions we can all make to our lifestyles to reduce our environmental impact. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently published a special report that assessed the impacts of 1.5°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels and related emissions pathways, following the higher level of ambition set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement. The Government has asked the UK Committee on Climate Change to provide new advice on how soon we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero. The Latin “conservare” means to preserve, and, as a Conservative, I am working hard to leave our environment in better shape than we found it. This is a huge challenge requiring us all to play our part and take collective action but I am confident we can meet this challenge head on and deliver. It only will be benefit but future generations too.

Welcome to Freeriders ‘Doing what you Love’ - ‘Love what you are Doing’

I

n 1998 Keith Richards decided to open up a dedicated Surfshop in Falmouth to try and encourage the sport in this area to the young and old. Keith had been fortunate enough to grow up on Swanpool Beach where he learnt to swim whilst only living a stones throw away from his favourite Cove. Keith has had the privilege to travel far and wide across the globe chasing the surf he desires as a sponsored highly ranked watersports athlete able to turn his ability to any water craft. Freeriders has just moved to a bigger, better shop 50 yards up the

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

road from the original one with the opportunity to have film nights and training nights instore. A big screen has been installed to watch all watersport events whilst having a coffee or juice in the new Freeriders coffee shop. Keith hopes everyone will have a pleasant shopping experience. Freeriders is Falmouths No1 Surfshop and through hard work and passionate customer care is the longest most established Surf Shop to be in Falmouth. Keith believes in ‘Doing what you Love’ - ‘Love what you are Doing’ – then the work lifestyle balance makes life a little easier – some would say ‘Living the Dream’ Freeriders also have the latest style skateboards in stock so when the surf is flat you can practise your surfing

skills on dry land with one of our ‘Slide Skateboards’ which are also great for fitness and technique. Freeriders has new and secondhand surfboards and skateboards in store as well as wetsuits to meet all the needs within the customers price range – so whether you are a total novice or want to compete on the world stage – we are sure we can help you. Keith is delighted to have been included in the Guardian Newspaper ‘ Top places to Visit’ in Falmouth.

It’s Party Time!

N

ew to Falmouth is the Village Emporium, your one stop shop for all things party. The owners, brothers Gareth and Kevin, however, are no novices when it comes to party goods. They started retailing greeting cards almost 20 years ago in their Albany Park store in Sidcup, Kent, before extending their range to balloons and gifts. This was followed up with, stationery, arts and crafts, an on-line store and now they have their very own app, where you can purchase (not hire) a wide range of fancy dress, accessories and partyware. They built on their success by opening a second store in Bexley, Kent. Now we are delighted to see them bringing their party feel to Falmouth. Cornwall, however is not new to them, as they spent many school holidays staying with relations and playing on its beaches and

visited several times during breaks away from studies at Plymouth Polytechnic. The brothers’ believe they are unique in what they do and cater for everything from a single balloon to a complete function decoration. They also have enough ideas and ranges to suit all types of occasions, including baby showers and hen parties. If you are looking for something a little more bespoke, then try out their Creation Express service, which enables you to create your own personalised card and/or gift, before taking it away in a luxury gift-wrapped package. They have an extended Christmas range available, all made in store and ready in minutes! Their history of success and nostalgic memories leaves them filled

with excitement about the new store. They have already developed a strong following on social media and were a sponsor at the recent Falmouth beer festival. They are especially excited about the run up to Christmas and already have the shelves filled with a variety of cards, (incl. charity packs) gifts and party ideas. With free parking available for several cars, this really is the place to get you in the party spirit.

Prosecco cake Method

The perfect cake for Prosecco lovers, with the Italian tipple finding its way into the cake, boozy buttercream and Proseccoflavoured sweet topping

1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Butter the inside of 2 deep, loose bottomed 21 cm tins. Cream the butter and sugar together with electric beaters until it is light and fluffy, then gradually beat in the eggs a little at a time. Fold in the flour and a pinch of salt, don’t worry if the mixture look like it has split, it will come back together when the flour is added. Pour in the Prosecco and stir until smooth.

2. Spoon the mixture into the tins, level the top and bake for 45-50 mins or until the cakes are well-risen and golden and a skewer inserted comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes and then turn them out onto a rack. 3. While the cakes cool, make the icing. Beat the butter with the icing sugar until it is smooth. Add the Prosecco and beat again until the frosting is fluffy and smooth. 4. Level the cakes if you need to and spread the raspberry jam on one of the cakes followed by some of the butter cream, sandwich the other cake on top. Roughly ice the cake all over in a very thin layer with a couple of tablespoons of buttercream, this will help all the crumbs stick to the cake and help make the outer layer of icing nice and clean. Ice the cake all over with the remaining buttercream, this can be quite rough because you are going to stick sweet all over it. Now stick sweets all over it. Go mad. Drink Prosecco with it.

North African spiced beef and root vegetable stew

Ras el hanout is a complex North African spice mix. If you can’t get hold of it, mix a large pinch each of cumin, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, chilli or cayenne and black pepper. Cinnamon sticks can vary in strength, so taste at intervals and remove when the flavour reaches your liking. Serve this stew with couscous or bread to soak up the juices.

Ingredients

3 tbsp olive, sunflower or vegetable oil 450g beef braising steak, cut into 4 similar-sized pieces 1 large onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed or finely chopped 2cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated (or add 1 rounded tsp dried ginger to the ras el hanout) 1 rounded tbsp ras el hanout (or see above for alternative) 800g mixed root veg (e.g. parsnips, carrots, celeriac and swede), peeled and chopped into large chunks 1 large glass of red wine (optional; you can use more stock instead) 400ml beef stock 1 cinnamon stick 1 x 400g can chickpeas, drained 100g pitted prunes handful of chopped parsley and/or coriander seeds from 1 pomegranate (optional) salt and black pepper

Variation

Replace the beef with diced lamb shoulder or lamb leg steaks. In this case, add a half teaspoon of turmeric and/or a pinch of saffron along with the ras el hanout and substitute dried apricots for the prunes.

Method

Heat a tablespoon of the oil in a heavy-based pot or casserole and fry the beef over a medium–high heat, turning it over so it browns on both sides. Remove to a plate. Add the remaining oil to the pot, turn the heat right down and add the onion. Fry gently, stirring often, for 10 minutes to soften without colouring. Add the garlic, ginger and ras el hanout and cook, stirring, for a couple more minutes. Return the beef and add the vegetables and wine (if using). Bring to a simmer and bubble for a couple of minutes. Then add the stock and cinnamon stick, cover and simmer gently for an hour. Stir in the chickpeas and prunes, re-cover the pot and simmer for a further 15 minutes, until the meat is totally tender. Sprinkle over the herbs and pomegranate seeds if using.

In the Garden We are just coming to one of our busier times of year with bare root fruit and ornamental trees ready at the end of November and of course Christmas trees which despite stories in the media have not jumped in price this year. We are holding our prices the same for the 5th year running.

Diary for November • Now is a good time to plant Magnolias so you get the benefit of the beautiful spring flowers • Keep on gathering up rose leaves to help prevent infections like blackspot next year • Clear away old foliage from herbaceous perennials and lift and divide any overcrowded clumps. This helps to keep the plants vigour so giving a better display • Lift parsnips after they have had a frost so this helps the flavour • Divide Rhubarb once they are dormant • November is the best time to spread manure on the veggie plot to give maximum time for it to rot down over the winter • Stake large cabbages, cauliflower etc. to prevent them rocking in the wind. It is also worth covering them

with a net to prevent the birds from eating them • The bare root fruit season starts from late November and goes through to mid-March. This is by far the best time for planting fruit trees and bushes • Check stored fruit regularly and remove any bad ones straight away • Apple and Pear trees can be pruned from December onwards but they must be fully dormant before pruning starts • Keep clearing fallen leaves off the lawn. I know it is a bit of a repetitive job but it is important to do to avoid dead spots on the lawn and to keep it healthy • Raise pot plants off the floor to prevent waterlogging • Clean garden tools and wipe with linseed oil to prevent rust
