Newton's News

I

have face many challenges as your Member of Parliament, the most significant is deciding whether UK military intervention in another country should be undertaken. I fundamentally believe in our values enshrined in the rule of law and that wherever possible diplomacy should be used to resolve conflict. I know that any action has consequences, sometimes unforeseen, but so too does inaction. I am also a mother of three children and am acutely aware that a decision to commit our armed services personnel will be putting another mother’s son or daughter in harms way. I know that during the Labour Government of Tony Blair, MPs were not always given accurate information upon which to base their decisions. When I was elected in 2010, I joined colleagues calling for much greater Parliamentary scrutiny of national security policy and decision makers. I share the deep concerns arising from the Labour Government’s intervention in Iraq. The Coalition Government led by David Cameron, put in place processes that are enabling far greater scrutiny of information about our national security, including intelligence, by MPs than previously. The Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament is composed of cross party members and its job is to scrutinise the work of those responsible for our national security. The members of the committee are notified under the Official Secrets Act 1989 and are given access to highly classified material in carrying out their duties. The committee holds evidence sessions with Government ministers and senior officials. The work of the committee is invariably conducted in secret, but its members do speak in debates in Parliament. I think that the work of this Committee provides MPs some assurance that decisions are being made on the best possible information. Had this Committee with the new powers it acquired in 2013 been in operation during the Tony Blair years, I doubt so many MPs would have voted for military intervention in Iraq. Most weeks in Parliament, we debate the UKs role in the world, including our involvement in the Middle East and Syria. It is now almost 100 years since the treaty to prohibit use of chemical weapons. We have seen nation after nation sign up to this global consensus. The universal abhorrence of chemical weapons, and the programme of destruction of declared stockpiles is a considerable achievement. In 2013 the Syrian regime committed to destroy its chemical arsenal while Russia - the mentor of Syrian Regime - guaranteed to the process overseen by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

6 FALMOUTH Wave

The National Security Council of the United Nations, the Prime Minister and Cabinet have seen a significant body of information, including intelligence, that indicates that the Assad regime was behind the chemical attack at Douma on April 7 that killed about 75 people and resulted in hundreds of casualties. The Douma massacre is part of a pattern of use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime. International investigators mandated by the UN Security Council have found the Assad regime responsible for using chemical weapons in four separate attacks since 2014. The military action undertaken by the UK on Saturday was carried out to alleviate further humanitarian suffering by degrading the Syrian Regime’s Chemical Weapons capability and deterring their use. The legal basis for this intervention has been published. Many countries and organisations, including NATO and the EU support this action. In degrading Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities the Prime Minister made her intensions clear - we want to do what we can to protect Syrian people from chemical weapons. These carefully targeted and calibrated strikes were not designed to intervene in the Syrian civil war or effect regime change. At a time of understandable tension in our relations with Russia it has been important to stress that this action does not entail an attempt to frustrate Russian strategic objectives in Syria. This does not represent an escalation of UK or western involvement in Syria. I don’t believe the global community can simply turn a blind eye to the use of chemical weapons. Along with partners and as members of the EU, we have tried non military interventions, including peace talks and sanctions. The UN have considered resolutions but Russia has repeatedly shielded the Syrian Regime from investigation and censure, vetoing six separate UN Security Council resolutions, including the UN mandated Investigative Mechanism set up to attribute responsibility for chemical weapons attacks in Syria. Of course every diplomatic effort must continue to be made to secure a political solution to the civil war in Syria but we cannot allow the use of chemical weapons with impunity

Diary for MAY

• Start to harden off half hardy annuals, Dahlias and Cannas before planting out after (hopefully) the last frost! • Trim back spreading plants like Aubrieta when they have finished flowering. This will encourage fresh new growth and more flowers. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses. By laying the stems horizontally will encourage more flowers. • Tie sweet peas to plant supports to encourage them to climb • Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering • Feed and water containers and remember to keep doing them throughout the summer. A liquid feed every 2-4 weeks will promote healthy growth and healthy plants are less susceptible to diseases • Water all young fruit trees and bushes. The main reason for losing new fruit trees and bushes is lack of water. Keep the soil moist. This applies equally to young ornamental trees • Harvest Rhubarb but only ever pick a third of the amount of stems • Harden off tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins ready for planting out later this month • Pinch out the growing tip of Broad Beans as soon as the beans start to ap-

pear at the base of the plant. This should help to reduce the risk of black fly attack • Keep on top of the weeding throughout the garden. Why waste water and nutrients on weeds • Hang pheromone traps in plum trees and apple trees to help prevent codling moth attacks and to monitor plum fruit moth • Remove fruits from trees in their first year. The tree needs the energy to develop into a good healthy strong tree and not to produce one or two low quality fruits • Regularly check your gooseberries for saw fly caterpillars. It is amazing how quickly they will decimate gooseberry bush leaves • Net soft fruits to prevent the birds from enjoying your fruits • Lay straw under strawberry plants to keep the fruits clean and off the ground and cover with a net to keep the birds off • Feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy green growth • Increase humidity in the greenhouse on hot days by damping it down. This may deter red spider mite • Don’t forget to ventilate the greenhouse on warm days

ow refreshing to see young people with a passion for a traditional trade transfer this into a real business opportunity. If we wasn’t surrounded by current day technologies, you may be excused if you thought Kieran Reeves of Reeves barbers, Penryn, was a throwback from the Victorian period. Ploughing his trade from the tender age of 13 and fully qualified by the age of 15, this ex Falmouth school student really has demonstrated his love of the age old skill of men’s haircutting. Whilst combining three days of school alongside two days of practical experience in a local barbers, Kieran’s age really belies his experience. He left school at 16 and just three years later he is snipping and shaving away in his own establishment. This shop with its light, unfussy, informal atmosphere

Traditional Values with Modern Trends

understates the seriousness with which Kieran takes his role. It has touches of nostalgia, with its candy cane barbers pole and pictures of boxing bouts on the wall but also some light entertainment in the form of table football which helps you bide time whilst waiting for your trim, beats staring at the walls! Mums be thankful, your children may never bemoan the boring school term hair cut once they start spinning in the goals on this table! Open 6 days per week, Kieran keeps clients looking smart and slick with a traditional short back and sides or the more modern and popular, skin fade. He also carries out beard trims and a very precise and clean looking cut throat shave. Being a young man himself, he keeps abreast of modern trends in male grooming whilst embracing the traditional

techniques that have served the industry for many years. Kieran’s enterprise and commitment to his trade deserve nothing but success, I’m sure you will join the Wave team and wish well in his venture.

T

here are around 11 million denture wearers in the UK but it is not just the elderly who require them. Indeed, almost a million people aged 16 to 44 have false teeth. There are many others who don’t wear dentures, who suffer in silence and in doing so lose self-esteem and quite often the inability to speak or eat properly.

There are many reasons for tooth loss, the most prevalent being removal because of dental disease. Other reasons include the effects of drug use, trauma, tooth developmental defects caused by malnutrition and genetic defects. Whatever the reason it is important to understand that there is a solution that is both affordable and aesthetically pleasing. Mention the word ‘dentures’ to many

people and they immediately picture a set of false teeth, two sturdy pink and white crescents, each complete with a full row of teeth. Existing denture wearers may also wonder why they need to change their denture. Over time the mouth changes and ill-fitting dentures can lead to irritation and mouth sores. Graham Taylor, at Care Denture is a fully qualified clinical denture technician (CDT) who fully understands both the physiological and mental reasons behind wearing dentures. He doesn’t just look at your teeth, he looks at you as a whole person, and tries to ascertain as much information about you and your requirements in order to give you the best dentures available. In order to give his patients the best denture possible, he has many types and options available, from full dentures, to partial dentures, flexible dentures and cobalt chrome dentures (metal). All of these dentures are bespoke to you and can be made to suit your face along with your chosen colour shade. Unlike

many denture providers, Graham sits at his own laboratory bench designing and making the denture with the client in mind. As a clinical dental technician Graham can offer a range of services, including advice on oral health. Along with performing technical and clinical procedures for removable dental appliances, he can carry out intensive clinical examinations to search for oral abnormalities and refer patients to other health care professionals where necessary. He prides himself on clients leaving his clinic with renewed confidence along with a wide smile, showing off their new teeth!

“ALABAMA ROT”

S

WHAT’S TO BE DONE?

ome of you may have heard about this condition as it has off and on been the subject of articles in newspapers, as well as on the BBC Local TV News as being of concern to dog owners in the south-west. It was first noted in the 1980s in the USA in Greyhounds, but there have been some cases found in the UK from around 2012, especially in and around the New Forest area. Several cases have already occurred this year, and although the number overall remains very low, it’s still a frightening disease. More to the point, the first case ever has occurred in Cornwall, in a dog that was frequently exercised in the Leedstown / Nancegollan / Praze triangle.

First of all, this disease is still very rare. On the other hand, skin damage / grazes / cuts / ulcerations on the legs and feet of dogs are very common, and only to be expected when dogs run at full pelt across rough ground! This traumatic kind of skin damage tends to get better quickly though, just like you’d expect a normal graze to improve, whereas the lesions typical of Alabama Rot tend to get worse, as they ‘eat’ through the skin. Secondly, however, if you are concerned about your dog, please speak to your local vet in the first instance. If they are particularly worried then there is a specialist referral centre in Hampshire which is currently gathering evidence on this condition, and advice can easily be sought from them. Initial investigations of a suspicious case would include blood and urine tests to monitor for the development of the kidney stages of this disease, and any potentially affected dog would be hospitalised with intravenous fluids and other supportive treatment administered to try and maintain kidney function. There is no one test which can quickly establish the diagnosis, so it’s more a case of assessing the signs as they develop. Although some dogs have survived, the overall prognosis, sadly, is poor.

WHAT IS IT?

Well, the truth is, nobody’s that sure, though it is known by a much more scientific name of “Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy” (or CRGV). Whatever the cause is, it produces tiny blood clots in the blood vessels which block them, and this lack of blood damages the affected tissues. In the skin, this causes ulceration; but in the kidney it can lead to severe organ malfunction – acute kidney failure. Numerous tests have been done on affected animals looking at blood analyses, tissue samples, bacteriology, virology, toxicology and so on, but nothing has been consistently found in all the cases so far examined as to suggest what it is that’s producing this condition. So we still don’t know.

PREVENTION

As the highest number of cases appears to be in the winter and spring, when walks are generally wetter and muddier – and it has been a very long and very wet winter here in Cornwall – it may be sensible to wash dogs off after walks, paying particular attention to their lower limbs and feet. Even just a quick once over with a wetwipe will be better than nothing, to remove whatever the cause of the disease is from the skin surface of the dog.

HOW IT MIGHT AFFECT YOUR DOG AND WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR

Right at the start, affected dogs typically have some kind of damage to the skin of the end of a limb (below the elbow and stifle) although lesions have also been seen on the face and underneath the dog – the chest and belly. The skin damage may start off as areas of reddened skin, or mild blisters, but they go on very quickly to form deep ulcers going through the entire thickness of the skin – these things range in size from 0.5 cms to 5 cms in diameter, so they can be quite large. So, initially, you may just notice your dog licking at their foot or leg and it may not be clear what the problem is underneath the fur. Other than that, typically dogs are otherwise feeling very well and full of it, but over the subsequent one to nine days they develop the clinical signs of acute kidney disease. These signs may include being very thirsty, depressed, off their food or vomiting. Some dogs will have both skin problems AND be showing the signs of the kidney disease at the same time, but only very rarely do the kidney symptoms flare up before

14 FALMOUTH Wave

IN THE FUTURE

the skin ones. Essentially, the kidneys progressively shut down so the dog goes into an almost irreversible metabolic collapse. There is no apparent breed, age or sex predilection. 152 cases are thought to have been seen in the UK over the past six years, coming from all parts of the UK. To start with there were clusters of cases from the New Forest area, but now that the disease is becoming better known, affected dogs are being diagnosed over a wider area including the one in the Praze area, which was treated in St Columb.

to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216

We need more evidence to try and find a cause – as despite the hundred and fifty cases so far we don’t appear to be any nearer to finding anything out. Whatever it is though, remember that cases are VERY rare – but if you are concerned, get your dog checked over by your vet and let them decide!
