Rosemullion Pet Page Sadly, there’s no free National Health Service for our pets. Could you afford the vet bills if your furry friend needed clinical care?

A

s a nation of pet lovers, it seems strange that only 32% of our canine companions and 16% of our feline friends have pet insurance in place in case of unexpected illness or injury. Most people don’t realise how much a veterinary bill can cost until the worst happens.

Different breeds can also be prone to conditions that need lifelong treatment, such as diabetes or arthritis. The average claim to treat a pet with diabetes is £970 per year!

INSURANCE IN A NUTSHELL With so many pet insurance policies available on the market, it can be confusing as to what’s really right for you and your pet’s needs. It’s easy to just pick the cheapest policy and relax… take some time to consider if that policy would be enough if your pet suddenly developed a lifelong condition. An annual policy will only cover your pet for any new illnesses and injuries for 365 days. Once the year is up, any cover for an injury or illness that occurred in that policy year will come to an end.

A lifetime policy offers just that, cover for life.

These policies will offer a fixed amount of veterinary fee cover which will be renewed every policy year, so long as you remain with the same insurance provider. Lifetime cover will ensure that your pet can receive lifelong treatment.

In addition to vet fee cover, other policy benefits and features can include third party liability cover (for dogs only), advertising costs to help if your pet goes missing and even holiday cancellation if your pet became ill.

When choosing a pet insurance policy, make sure you and your best friend are covered for all your adventures. As a veterinary practice, we would always recommend a lifetime policy as the best type of cover for your pet.

MAKING A CLAIM Every insurance company has different policies when it comes to making a claim. Some may request that a Pre-Authorisation is completed prior to your pet’s treatment. To help you to budget for the costs of your pet’s treatment, it can be useful to know whether your insurance company will cover the cost of the vet bill for their treatment.

We would recommend Pre-Authorisation as occasionally you can discover that your insurance company will not cover your pet for certain conditions, or you will have a maximum spending limit that is less than the treatments that have been proposed. Knowing this before we start helps you and the vet discuss what is best for your pet, and best for your finances.

There are 2 different ways in which to claim on your pet insurance, depending on the cost of your pet’s veterinary treatment.

Most veterinary practices ask that any treatment costs are settled upfront and the balance will be claimed back on your behalf.

However, certain practices and insurance companies will allow you to make a Direct Claim – for example, depending on the insurance company; Rosemullion will offer the option of a Direct Claim for any treatment costs over £300. Whereby, you pay your policy excess and we claim the remainder of the veterinary bill straight back to the practice. On completion of a Direct Claim, you will be asked to read and sign a Direct Claim Authorisation Form, which allows us to contact your insurance company on your behalf.

If your pet is having ongoing treatment or medication after the initial claim has been submitted, we will need to process a Continuation Claim.

Continuation claims are usually processed roughly every 3 months or when the outstanding amount reaches over £100.

Once your insurance claim has been confirmed, you will need to submit a completed and signed insurance form to your veterinary practice. This will be checked by a member of staff to ensure we have all the correct information we need in order to process the claim. Once submitted the claim will be completed and sent through to your insurance company along with a full clinical history for your pet – this is a legal requirement for any insurance claim and should be detailed in the terms and conditions of your policy.

hildren’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is asking people to get creative in the kitchen and take part in a month of foodie fundraising this October.

The charity is urging supporters to host a Cook Eat Give event for friends and family and ask guests to make a donation in return.

The new fundraising initiative will help CHSW support more than 500 children with life-limiting conditions and their families at its three children’s hospices across the South West, including at Little Harbour in St Austell.

Sarah Stott, Fundraising Manager at Little Harbour, said: “Cook Eat Give is a really easy way for people to get involved in fundraising for Children’s Hospice South West. Everyone loves a foodie get together – whether it’s a barbeque, pizza night or themed dinner party, the choice is yours and you can enjoy your food with the knowledge that you are helping us to support local children and families.”

“We hope people will join us this October but if that date isn’t suitable, people can host a Cook Eat Give anytime. Every meal, however large or small, will make a big difference.”

Mealtimes are a big part of life at the charity’s three children’s hospices. During their short stays at the hospice, all families eat lunch

and dinner together around a large dining table alongside hospice staff.

For many families, eating a hot, home cooked meal together is a rarity due to the care demands on parents alongside their hectic routines. During mealtimes families forge relationships with staff and other families also supported by the hospice, while siblings also make long lasting friendships.

Kerry Hollingsworth, Cook at Little Harbour, said: “The word hospice initially for families is very scary, so when they are here and they come for their first visit it’s really lovely for them all to come to the kitchen and dining room, its where everyone sits down and eats together, and they can form some really good friendships and share experiences with one and other.”

MEXICAN CHICKEN STEW Bring a touch of Mexican flavour to your midweek meal with this low-fat, one-pan supper

METHOD

1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan. Add the onion and cook for 5 mins or until softened and starting to turn golden, adding the garlic for the final min.

Stir in the sugar, chipotle paste and tomatoes. Put the chicken into the pan, spoon over the sauce, and simmer gently for 20 mins until the chicken has cooked (add a splash of water if the sauce gets too dry).

These delicious dairy free options will not only be kind to your stomach but also taste amazing!

Beryl's BITES INGREDIENTS

2. Remove the chicken from the pan and shred with 2 forks, then stir back into the sauce.

Scatter with a little red onion, the coriander, and serve with remaining red onion, tortillas or rice.

3. If you want to use a slow cooker, cook the onion and garlic as above, then put into your slow cooker with the sugar, chipotle, tomatoes and chicken. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours. Remove the chicken and shred then serve as above.

1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ tsp dark brown sugar 1 tsp chipotle paste (! used Discovery) 400g can chopped tomatoes 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 1 small red onion, sliced into rings a few coriander leaves corn tortillas, or rice to serve

ROSEMARY CHICKEN WITH OVEN-ROASTED RATATOUILLE You can’t beat this low-fat, one-pot recipe for an easy meal, bursting with summer colour and flavour

METHOD

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. In a large roasting tin, toss together the aubergine, courgettes and peppers with half the chopped rosemary, half the garlic, 2 tbsp oil and some seasoning. Spread out the vegetables in an even layer, then roast in the oven for 20 mins.

INGREDIENTS

1 aubergine, cut into chunky pieces 2 courgettes, sliced into half-moons 3 mixed peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped 2. Meanwhile, mix remaining rosemary, garlic and oil 2 tsp finely chopped rosemary, plus together. Slash each of the chicken breasts 4-5 times with 4 small sprigs a sharp knife, brush over the flavoured oil, season and 2 large garlic cloves, crushed chill for 15 mins.

After veg have cooked for 20 mins, stir in the tomatoes. 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 250g cherry or baby plum tomato, Make spaces in the roasting tin and nestle the chicken breasts amongst the vegetables. Place a rosemary sprig on halved top of each chicken breast. Return the tin to the oven for 18-20 mins, until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly caramelised. Serve with some new potatoes, if you like.

Investment in the new workshop has seen vast improvements

he move to new premises at the Praze in Penryn has enabled Hopkins joinery to increase their production line substantially. However, it has not meant the traditional skills they use to produce a wide range of box sash windows; casement windows and door sets have been lost, as they continue to manufacture exceptional quality items. Now recognised as the region’s premier supplier, they aim to maintain using this attention to detail by ensuring that the younger members of their team are trained in the skills of using traditional techniques.

The new premises have more space to ensure efficient and safe production and now house a spray shop with a carousel and spray booth with assisted drying.

Efficiencies can also be witnessed in the glazing shop as glazier’s carry out their tasks completed unhindered by any space restrictions.

In recent months they have added new patterns to their range of the very popular high performance double glazed windows, as they now include a Georgian range (with slim glazing bars); a Heritage range of slim double glazed units in Victorian sash, which now meet the stringent regulations laid out when fitting in some listed buildings.

September is not only the start of a new academic year for school aged children but for many adults starting an apprenticeship or a course at college. It is great to see the wide range of choices of excellent opportunities available for people of all ages here.

It’s also the time that we welcome many new, young people into our community as they join our local universities. New academics and their technical support teams too.

I recently organised a very useful event with Professor Peter Hopkinson, Director of the Centre for Circular Economy at the University of Exeter’s Business School, and his team at the Penryn campus.

The event brought together a group of people that included Government policy makers, local businesses, community organisations and volunteers and discussed how the south west can lead the way on transforming our approach to plastics.

As many of us give of our time to beach cleans and litter picking in our communities we are only too aware of how much plastic ends up in our precious natural environment and the damage it does there.

Professor Peter Hopkinson is also the lead for the Exeter Multidisciplinary Plastics Research Hub (ExeMPLaR) which received £1 million of Government funding to become one of the leading centres to reduce the devastating impact plastic pollution can have on the environment.

The ExeMPLaR project is about creating a network of organisations to revolutionise the way we produce, recycle and utilise plastics. The global rate of plastic production and waste is accelerating at a time when we need to take radical action to reduce, reuse and recycle if we are to tackle the rising problem of plastic pollution.

The scale of the problem was laid bare by Kevin Gaston, Professor of Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of Exeter, who talked about the eye-watering global volumes of plastic waste from areas such as plastic packaging, construction and textiles.

which around 30 billion are produced each year and 1.6 billion thrown away in the United States alone.

Joel Murray from the Defra Resources, Waste and Plastics Strategy Policy Team spoke about the UK Government’s ambitions to tackle plastic pollution and the aim that all plastic packaging placed on the UK market will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 and all avoidable plastic waste will be eliminated by 2042. Joel was keen to impress that the government cannot achieve these goals alone and that communities and organisations need to work together to make an impact. There was a similar message from Cornwall Council which has just produced the county’s first Plastic Free Cornwall Manifesto.

The ExeMPLaR project is about redesigning the whole plastics system. The project aims to discover a set of actions that can be taken to drive practical changes that will make the greatest difference.

The event came about following a meeting I organised earlier this year with Kirstie Edwards of Plastic Free Falmouth involving representatives of the many people in Cornwall who are involved with litter picking and beach cleaning. I want government policy to be shaped by evidence and action of what works and, here in Cornwall, the ExeMPLaR project is leading the way in redesigning the system to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic – for the benefit of our environment and our local economy.

The ExeMPLaR project is still in the early stages but it is building a network of people across the south west who can transform the plastics system.
