IT’S OFFICIAL - FALCARE IS OUTSTANDING
O
n November 10th 2017 Falcare was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The whole organisation is celebrating as the report has rated us as ‘Outstanding Overall’. Two years ago the CQC awarded Falcare a rating of ‘Good’ and through the leadership of Managing Director, Mrs Sue Miner and
the dedication of the managers and staff the organisation has gone from strength to strength. The inspector recognised staff as being “skilled and enthusiastic and that they exceeded expectations and clearly went the extra mile to support people. Staff are highly valued by managers and their contributions are appreciated and celebrated”.
Falcare continues to look to the future in order to meet the growing need for flexible and high quality services. They have recently acquired an additional venue at Penryn Learning Zone which will offer different experiences and expand their capacity, and were fortunate in successfully bidding for £10,000 lottery funding to equip the new centre. They are delighted that their
small, locally managed organisation, which reflects the unique nature of our county has been recognised as an Outstanding service. The directors awarded a bonus to all staff for their contributions to the success of the company.
It’s all very exciting and what a wonderful way to start 2018!

Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice
DENTAL DISEASE
I
thought that I would use this month’s article to explain why the care of your pet’s teeth is so important. Dental disease is one of the most frequent ailments seen by veterinary surgeons and can be found in the majority of cats over 2 years of age and most dogs over 3. It is almost certainly as painful for your pet as it would be for you but your pet lacks the same powers of communication as us so are unable to let you know they are in oral pain. Also, it is a fundamental instinct of a dog or cat to eat, so even if their mouth is diseased, only very rarely does it lead to them to stop eating completely. So, as a result of this it is only relatively recently that these problems have been addressed. Cats’ and dogs’ mouths are naturally very unhygienic environments, teeming with bacteria – which is why a cat or dog bite can swiftly become infected – and it is these bacteria that are the primary cause of most of your pet’s potential problems.
What are the most common dental diseases to be aware of?
It all starts with ‘plaque’. As in us, bacterial plaque can accumulate on the surface of the teeth, but it is almost impossible to see as it forms a virtually invisible layer over the tooth, called a biofilm. If this is not removed quickly it can become mineralised with calcium carbonate, which becomes tartar (often also called calculus just to confuse people!). It is the bacterial products and decaying food that stick to the rough surface of the tartar that is one of the major causes of bad breath. Tartar is easily recognisable by its brown colour. You can normally first see this tartar at the junction between the gum and the tooth and is most usually first found on the back teeth – the molars and pre-molars as well as the long canine teeth. Unfortunately, nothing really brushes or abrades the cheek surfaces of these teeth, so once started, plaque can accumulate readily.
Sooner or later the accumulation of tartar on the surface of the tooth will lead to gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums – you can see here how the gum is reddened and sore. If untreated it will result in the gums receding and this will create further problems. If gingivitis is caught at an early enough stage then it is possible through veterinary treatment to achieve a full recovery.
There are a number of common signs that could alert you to the possibility of dental problems with your pet. • If your pet goes off its food suddenly – your pet may approach the food bowl and then back away or be reluctant to eat • Chewing with obvious discomfort • Food dropping from the mouth when eating • Difficulty swallowing • Persistent dribbling, possibly with fresh-looking blood • Very bad breath, often absolutely knockout! • Head shaking • Marked weight loss
What next? However, if nothing is done, eventually the gums will recede far enough to expose the root of the tooth, and this periodontal disease is irreversible. When the root becomes exposed the tooth root cavity can then become infected which will lead to the ligaments that fasten the tooth in the socket being destroyed. This in turn leads to excessively wobbly teeth and eventually the tooth is lost, leaving an open socket in a mouth hooching with bacteria: not good! To cap it all, infections may spread into and around the socket producing pus that oozes around the , and a foul odour. And infections can penetrate deeper still into the socket, and create a tooth root abscess, causing the face to bulge, or an even more severe problem.
Once periodontal disease starts these degenerative changes can’t be reversed. And the whole thing snowballs, as more and more plaque accumulates, so more tartar will collect and lead to further disease.

So what signs should I look out for?
to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216
What do I do if my pet has any of the things mentioned above? Before I cover what can be done as treatment and or prevention I really want to stress what you should not do. • Never try to remove the tartar yourself with a metal instrument from your pet! Potentially you could harm your pet’s mouth. Equally importantly you will realise that you have now got your hand inside the mouth of a scared pet – so I’d have a small bet that the next thing that happens is you get bitten! • What will also happen is you’ll probably damage the surface of the tooth by creating microscopic scratches on it and this will encourage a more rapid formation of plaque that can stick to these scratches, that will promote further disease. • And never try to use human toothpaste to brush your pet’s teeth. Human toothpaste is designed to foam and not be swallowed. Dogs universally hate the taste and cats can become ill if they regularly swallow it, even if you are brave enough to get it inside a cat’s mouth in the first place!
The honest advice is to take your pet to your vet – and how these different situations can be tackled by them is something I’ll cover next month.

A quick history of Valentines Day
Suduko
Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century. Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love. Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United kingdom were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in midFebruary, birds also became a symbol of the day. Traditional gifts include candy and flowers, particularly red roses, a symbol of beauty and love.

Newton's News T
here is no doubt that Falmouth is a great place to work, study and live. However, the fact also remains that too many people who have grown up here can now not afford to live here. Since being elected I have worked hard to enable decisions and actions to be taken locally to tackle these serious problems. Ensuring people have a genuinely affordable and decent home remains a top priority for me. The Coalition Government from 2010 – 2015 returned decisions about planning and homes from Westminster to Cornwall Council. I also championed neighbourhood planning, enabling local people to help shape the future of our communities. As a champion of returning power from Westminster to local people and communities it is very disappointing to see the leadership of Cornwall Council persistently not using these powers for the benefit of local people. Cornwall Council was amongst the last planning authorities to agree a Local Plan. It only submitted Cornwall’s housing allocations to the Planning Inspector in October. The Planning Inspector’s role is to ensure the planning process is being undertaken properly, fairly and that it meets local needs. Sadly, despite the hard work of those involved, we still don’t have an agreed Falmouth Neighbourhood Plan. So as a result of the delayed Cornwall Plan, the yet to be agreed Cornwall housing allocations or Falmouth Neighbourhood Plan, we are left without a proper plan for the growth of Falmouth. This is particularly worrying as Cornwall Council supports the lifting of the cap on the number of students in our universities while not actively addressing the pressure on local housing and services that inevitably follows. The impact of this is clearly being felt. I read the letter from the Planning Inspector who approved the application to build new student accommodation on the site of the The Ocean Bowl. He acknowledged the strength of local feeling against the development and drew attention to the lack of an effective reason not to grant permission. Cornwall Council should and could have done more to prevent Falmouth being in this situation. Of course Cornwall Councillor Geoffrey Evans has worked tirelessly for his division, making the case against this application. Following this planning decision, subsequent recent decisions were based on the same considerations. Since being elected, I have been clear. I support the universities and welcome the students and staff to Falmouth and Penryn, but Cornwall Council must plan for the inevitable growing pains. Since 2010, I have advocated for more purpose built accommodation on and near the

campus. More student accommodation could be built in Truro too. There are good public transport links between Falmouth and Truro. Providing more student accommodation must be accompanied by investment in good quality, genuinely affordable and social housing in Falmouth and Penryn as well as tackling the minority of “rogue” landlords. Building on tough new penalties for “rogue” landlords brought in last year, the government recently announced plans that will enable Cornwall Council to take further action to crack down on “rogue” landlords who rent sub-standard and overcrowded homes. There has been a rapid expansion of student HMOs in Falmouth and Penryn due to the rapid expansion of Falmouth and Exeter universities. Of course HMOs can provide cheaper accommodation for people with limited housing options and are often occupied by the most vulnerable in our society. While many HMOs are managed to good standards, too often we see examples of bad practice from rogue landlords who are happy to rake in profits but care less about issues like overcrowding, health and safety, waste storage and anti-social behaviour.

The government’s plans to extend compulsory licensing of HMOs will help to create a level playing field between landlords and make life better for tenants and local communities. The information local authorities collect as they license HMOs could be very valuable and, if shared with relevant partners, could bring a number of wider benefits. For example, Cornwall Council could use this information to calculate the loss of council tax from student accommodation and seek compensation through business rate retention, which is an important source of council funding. As Falmouth grows its essential that the needs of the community are met. There is Government funding available to invest in our NHS and local schools in areas where new homes are built, but Cornwall Council has to start with a plan that works for local people.

ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear
gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6

Diary for
February
• Start chitting early potatoes, stand them on there root end (a mark on one end like a little belly button where the roots come from) in a seed tray or egg box in a bright, cool but frost free place • Start preparing your veggie seed beds but not if there is frost on them. You could warm up the ground with black plastic sheeting which also helps to keep the soil a bit drier • Cut back autumn fruiting Raspberry canes to the ground to encourage the growth of new canes which will fruit this coming autumn. Summer fruiting Raspberries should have the tips of the canes cut off if they are higher than there supports but always cut just above a bud. Now is the time to plant new canes. • Plant new Rhubarb crowns • Prune apple and pear trees whilst they are still dormant but DO NOT prune Apricots, Peaches, Cherries and Plums until the summer. • Mulch around fruit trees with very well-rotted compost or manure taking care to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk • Prune back over-wintering fuchsias to one or two buds per shoot • Prune winter flowering jasmine when flowers have finished to about 2” from the old wood to encourage new growth for next years flowers • Remove dead flowers from winter pansies so they don’t set seed and to encourage more flowers • Cut any deciduous hedges now before the birds start to nest • Don’t forget the birds, they still need feeding and water particularly when icy.
