Don’ just take our word for it! Here are a few reviews from our happy customers “As a Mum of two I was desperate to have my broken washing machine up and running again. I’m so glad I called A1. They responded with a super fast and friendly service. They really knew what they were doing, kept things simple and repaired my washing machine quickly. Thank you A1” Lisa
www.atlanticblindscornwall.co.uk “I own a rental property in Falmouth. They are always quick and offer a great service. On ringing for advice about a dodgy fire risk tumble dryer, instead of trying to flog me a service/new one they told me how to get a cheap replacement from the company. Really genuine advice greatly appreciated” Metheven “Over the years, I have used this company many times. The staff go above and beyond the call of duty, give an excellent service are efficient and reliable. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending A1 Appliances to others” Toops

WALK YOURSELF TO IMPROVED HEALTH With its vast array of Area's of Outstanding Beauty and the beauty of the 300 miles of the South West Coast Path, Cornwall has long been considered as a wonderful natural habitat in which to take a walk but are you aware of the widely recognised health benefits walking can bring. Here are some of the top ten reasons:
1. WALKERS LIVE LONGER. A recent study carried of 8000 men (Honolulu Heart Study) showed that just two miles walking per day cut the risk of death by almost half.
4. WALKING REDUCES THE RISK OF CANCER. Many medical studies have shown that walking and exercise can reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer.
2. WALKING HELPS PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN. If you add 2000 more steps to your regular daily activities, you may never gain another pound in weight (Colorado Health Sciences Centre)
5. WALKING REDUCES THE RISK OF HEART DISEASE AND STROKE. Heart disease and stroke are among the top killers of both men and women. You can substantially cut the risk of both by walking 3060 minutes per day.
3. YOU CAN WALK OFF WEIGHT. Exercise through walking is an important part of any weight loss program. You must still watch how much you eat but walking helps you build healthy lean muscle, lose inches of fat and increase your metabolism.
6. WALKING BOOSTS BRAIN POWER. A study carried out by the National Council on Aging (USA) found that walking 45 minutes per day at 15 minute mile pace increased the thinking skills of those aged over 60. 7. WALKING REDUCES DIABETES RISK. Walk for 30 minutes per day as your minimum daily requirement and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, it also helps maintain blood sugar levels for those with diabetes. 8. WALKING IMPROVES MOOD AND RELIEVES STRESS. Walking and other exercise

releases endorphins, the body’s natural happy drugs. 9. WALKING CAN PREVENT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION. What better reason for men to take a brisk two mile walk each day and reduce the risk of impotence from mid-life onwards. 10. IT’S EASY TO START WALKING. All you need is a pair of comfortable shoes and the motivation to get yourself outside the front door and what greater motivation than all the reasons above and the beauty of the Cornish countryside.

T
he High Street has changed significantly over recent years and what has been missing are those bespoke, niche services that house those trades that are so hard to find on the internet. The small and friendly South West Sofa Company is a prime example of this. With over forty years’ experience of both re-upholstery and manufacturing within the furniture and soft furnishings industry, they cater for both commercial and private projects.
They can also make bespoke sofas, chairs, chaise lounges, footstools, ottomans, headboards, corner units, sofa beds and banquettes, all to your specification. In making these they cover the full spectrum of styles, from contemporary to modern or traditional and all made from solid beech with structural plywood. If it’s just a makeover you are after they can also replace your loose covers or renew your tired looking cushions.
Their range of services includes the re-upholster of your existing furniture
Fully Bespoke Furniture Sofas made to order. Full reupholstery and loose cover service provided.
The full extent of their services also includes, pelmets and Roman blinds, made to order and just to show they are in touch with changing market trends, they are happy to assist you in refurbishing your Camper van or caravan seating. For the commercial market they are the go to place if you require bench seating in various styles for hotels, pubs and restaurants. They really are tradesmen who haven’t abandoned their unique skills in favour of the production line. For a friendly and personal free quotation please contact:

WARNING TO DOG OWNERS WALKING THEIR DOGS ON LIVESTOCK-GRAZED LANDS!
T
his month I’m writing about a condition which has recently come to the attention of me and my colleagues at Rosemullion, and which deserves a much wider appreciation by the general dog-owning public. It’s potentially quite serious, so pay attention!
such as ‘Endectrid’, as well as in oral wormers such as ‘Milbeworm’, but the data sheets for these drugs state that these products have been tested at up to ten times the recommended dose – repeat ten times overdose! – in proven ivermectin-sensitive Collies WITHOUT any adverse side-effects.
The time is now nigh for doing more dog walking in fields and more horses are now out grazing – in other words, all being well, it’s springtime – or it nearly is I think, as I write this only ten days or so after the ‘Beast from the East’ met ‘Storm Emma’! In a lot of cases turnout of animals from their winter accommodation happens in early spring, so there may well be more grazing animals of all sorts around now, and / or they will appear in fields that have previously been vacant.
THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM
SETTING THE SCENE
The first thing to realise is that farmers and horse-owners regularly worm their animals with what are known as “Ivermectin-based products”. They’re cheapish, do a very good job, are pretty safe in the main for farmers to handle, and can be applied in a pour-on form, just like the equivalent ‘spot-on’ products in dogs and cats.
Where a problem may arise is when ivermectin-sensitive dogs accidentally consume a large amount of ivermectin-based products. Now this can be something quite uncommon, like if they decide to hoover up discarded horse worming syringes (as a horse is wormed by squirting the pasty contents of a syringe into the horse’s mouth and then the syringe can be thrown away), or maybe more common, in eating horse manure (or possibly sheep/cow manure) and the amount of the drug taken in like this is potentially poisonous. Some dogs, after all, do like a nice appetiser of fresh horse dung, and if that horse has recently been treated with one of these wormers, there may well be enough of the drug coming through its guts and being concentrated in the dung.
If your dog is a Collie, or a Collie-type, or another herding breed (particularly Old English Sheepdog, Shetland Sheepdog, McNab, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, English Shepherd, Long-Haired Whippet, or a Silken Windhound – now there’s a breed to Google!), there is a possibility – repeat POSSIBILITY, not probability – that that they may carry a gene in them that makes them susceptible to not tolerating these ivermectin-based products, along with some other drugs. This is called the MDR-1 gene.
The effects of a toxic dose are usually on the nervous system (which is how they kill they worms), so you may get twitching, dilated pupils, unsteadiness of gait, confusion, disorientation, drooling, and possibly these signs progress to seizures or a coma if the dose is high enough. Treatment is symptomatic – intravenous fluids, sedatives to relieve any convulsions, and drugs to support the dog’s metabolism while it gets rid of the poison.
Ivermectin-type drugs are used in commonly prescribed spot-on medications in our practice,
Be reassured right at the start that this is not an issue at all for most dogs. The risk is only there
22 FALMOUTH Wave
THE SOLUTION
to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216
is your dog is one of the likely breeds to possess the MDR-1 gene, making it super-sensitive to the effects of these drugs, AND is likely to eat enough faeces of a large animal that has been recently wormed with an ivermectin-based product. But there are several things you can do. Firstly, if you’re concerned, avoid walking your dogs over fields that have had horses or sheep in them in the last 2-3 weeks, 4 weeks in cattle, especially if your dog is very much into eating faeces. Secondly though, if your dog is one of the breeds I’ve mentioned, or a crossbred “with some Collie in him somewhere along the line”, we can do gene testing at any branch of Rosemullion, to see if they possess the gene which makes them susceptible to these agricultural wormers. The process is very simple. Your dog needs to be over 12 weeks old and have had no food for 2 hours beforehand. A simple cheek swab can be taken by a nurse or vet (CSI style), and sent off to the lab that we use, and then we usually get the results within a week or two. We’ve recently performed a few of these tests on Collie pups and so far all have tested negative .... so that’s something to consider for peace of mind!
REMINDER
Just a note, too, that this is lambing season, so fields may well be stocked by ewes and their lambs. If you have to walk your dog in these fields PLEASE do not allow your dog off the lead as sheep worrying does happen, however unintentionally, and is quite devastating. Equally, ewes can be very protective of their offspring and can charge at you / your dog, so be warned and steer clear!

Red Velvet Cake Method
1 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil and flour three 9 by 1 1/2-inch round cake pans. 2 In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. In another large bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla. 3 Using a standing mixer, mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined and a smooth batter is formed. 4 Divide the cake batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Place the pans in the oven evenly spaced apart. Bake, rotating the pans halfway through the cooking, until the cake pulls away from the side of the pans, and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean, about 30 minutes. 5 Remove the cakes from the oven and run a knife around the edges to loosen them from the sides of the pans. One at a time, invert the cakes onto a plate and then re-invert them onto a cooling rack, rounded-sides up. Let cool completely. 6 Frost the cake. Place 1 layer, rounded-side down, in the middle of a rotating cake stand. Using a palette knife or offset spatula spread some of the Cream Cheese Frosting over the top of the cake. (Spread enough frosting to make a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer.) Carefully set another layer on top, rounded-side down, and repeat. Top with the remaining layer and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Sprinkle the top with the pecans.
Cream Cheese Frosting
1 In a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or with a hand-held electric mixer in a large bowl, mix the cream cheese, sugar, and butter on low speed until incorporated. Increase the speed to high, and mix until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. (Occasionally turn the mixer off, and scrape the down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula.) 2 Reduce the speed of the mixer to low. Add the vanilla, raise the speed to high and mix briefly until fluffy (scrape down the bowl occasionally). Store in the refrigerator until somewhat stiff, before using. May be stored in the refrigerator for 3 days..

Newton's News Amongst my earliest memories was the moon walk. Ever since then I have been inspired by space exploration, counting Apollo 13 and Gravity amongst my favourite films. So apart from the significant economic benefit, I was genuinely excited by the recent news that Goonhilly Earth Station, is being upgraded to communicate with deep space missions to the Moon and Mars. This is thanks to an £8.4 million investment from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). It will be the first time the UK has had the capability to communicate directly with deep-space missions and makes Goonhilly the world’s first commercial deep-space communications station. The LEP’s investment has come from the UK Government’s Local Growth Fund and will be made via the European Space Agency, helping to create the world’s first commercial deep-space communications station, capable of tracking future missions to the Moon and Mars. In future, Goonhilly will complement the capability of the European Space Agency (ESA)’s worldwide ground station network, which today comprises seven core stations supporting more than 20 earth, observatory, planetary and exploration spacecraft as well as European launchers. The investment will provide a huge boost to Cornwall’s space ambitions. Once the upgrade work is complete, Goonhilly will have the ability to track and control forthcoming robotic and human missions to the Moon and Mars, making a significant technical and economic contribution to European efforts in global space exploration. This is a fantastic boost to Cornwall’s space ambitions and significantly enhances what the UK can offer the fast-growing global space industry – which is a key ambition of the Government’s Industrial Strategy. There will be more than 50 lunar and deep space missions planned over the next decade and it means our region can participate directly in global space programmes. As well as taking on 18 new staff, the team at Goonhilly are expecting a significant upsurge in interest in the space sector in Cornwall. A number of companies are now looking at the growing capability both at Goonhilly and Cornwall Airport Newquay, which are both part of the Aerohub Enterprise Zone offering 100% business rate relief. Separately, the LEP has plans to develop a commercial spaceport at Cornwall Airport Newquay. Small satellite launch and sub-orbital flight from UK spaceports could capture a share of a £10bn global launch opportunity over the next 10 years. With new spaceflight laws and grant funding announcements expected in the next few months, Cornwall is well prepared to make the most of this opportunity.
30 FALMOUTH Wave
According to the UK Space Agency, the global market for space is expected to increase from £155bn per annum to £400bn per annum by 2030. The UK Government has set a target of securing 10% of this global space economy, £40bn per annum, by 2030. This new technology is supporting the growing mining industry in Cornwall. Cornish Lithium secured funding from Innovate UK to run a project in conjunction with the Satellite Applications Catapult, looking at how satellite data can be used to support lithium exploration and to provide an environmental baseline for mining activities within Cornwall. Earth observation data has been used to remotely map geological structures, clay alteration, land surface temperature and vegetation anomalies across two areas of interest in Cornwall at United Downs and St Austell. Along with its fellow mining consortium partners, including the British Geological Survey, Camborne School of Mines and North Coast Consulting, Cornish Lithium then used local knowledge and field evidence to test the validity of the remote mapping by satellite. The earth observation outputs were then integrated and combined to produce a prospectivity map for lithium exploration in Cornwall. In parallel, earth observation data has been used to better establish the environmental baseline for the two project areas of interest. The mapping techniques developed by the earth observation companies can also be used to provide ongoing, remote monitoring of the environment as projects progress, which may be invaluable data for mining companies in the South West who need to continually prove their minimal impact on their local area. These are just two recent examples of how the Government is investing in Cornwall, building an economy fit for the future. Since 2010 there are record levels of local people of all ages and backgrounds in employment and 4,950 apprenticeships have been created. In 2010, I made supporting the creation of high skilled and well paid jobs a personal priority. Working with many local ‘can do’ and positive people I am pleased with the progress we have made. There is still much more work to do but it is good to see Cornwall leading the way in innovative technology with high skilled well paid jobs.

Diary for APRIL • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone, Growmore or similar. Lightly fork in to the surface. • Roses are very greedy plants and would benefit from a feed with a good rose fertiliser. • If you have plants that need support, get the supports in now, if you haven’t already done so. It is easier when there is less growth and they are supported from their first growth. • Tie in climbing plants and rambling roses. This is an on-going job all season. • Check tree ties firstly to weather they need re-placing and secondly that they are not too tight and strangling the tree. • Prune Forsythia as soon as they have finished flowering. Cut back to strong young shoots. • Dead head any daffodils and tulips as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage back. Allow the foliage to die back naturally so the energy goes back into the bulb for next year. • If you haven’t already done so, think about getting your early potatoes in. • Don’t forget to keep a rotation of
salad crops going so you have home grown available all season. • Mulch fruit trees with well-rotted manure or compost making sure it is not against the trunk. • Apply a slow release fertiliser around the bottom of raspberry canes to encourage a good crop. • Apply a high nitrogen feed to your lawn to give it a boost. A good method is to apply a combined fertiliser, weed killer and moss killer. Three jobs done in one! • Now is a good time to be repairing or replacing tired old lawns but if you re-seed or turf, make sure the soil is kept moist. • Before mowing the lawn, brush of any worm castings to avoid leaving small muddy patches. • Mow the lawn once a week but not to lower setting at first. Lower the blade nearer to the end of the month. • Re-cut the edges of the lawn if they have become untidy or broken down. • Top dress containers with new compost. Remove the top couple of inches of soil, moss and weeds and replace with fresh. This is also a good opportunity to top dress with a slow release granular fertiliser.
