Garden
In the Garden We are just coming to one of our busier times of year with bare root fruit and ornamental trees ready at the end of November and of course Christmas trees. There are still a few jobs around the garden so here is a reminder of a few.
Diary for November
• Now is a good time to plant Magnolias so you get the benefit of the beautiful spring flowers • Keep on gathering up rose leaves to help prevent infections like blackspot next year • Clear away old foliage from herbaceous perennials and lift and divide any overcrowded clumps. This helps to keep the plants vigour so giving a better display • Lift parsnips after they have had a frost so this helps the flavour • Divide Rhubarb once they are dormant • November is the best time to spread manure on the veggie plot to give maximum time for it to rot down over the winter • Stake large cabbages, cauliflower etc. to prevent them rocking in the wind. It is also worth covering them with a net to prevent the birds from eating them • The bare root fruit season starts from late November and goes through to mid-March. This is by far the best time for planting fruit trees and bushes • Check stored fruit regularly and remove any bad ones straight away • Apple and Pear trees can be pruned from December onwards but they must be fully dormant before pruning starts • Keep clearing fallen leaves off the lawn. I know it is a bit of a repetitive job but it is important to do to avoid dead spots on the lawn and to keep it healthy • Raise pot plants off the floor to prevent waterlogging • Clean garden tools and wipe with linseed oil to prevent rust
Order your British Grown Christmas Tree Cornish and National Fruit Trees available from late November

GIN & TEA CHRISTMAS CAKE Ingredients
1.2 kg dried mixed fruit 75 g (3oz) dates (stoned), roughly chopped 6 tbsp loose leaf Earl Grey tea 100 ml (3 ½ fl oz) gin to soak the fruit, plus extra to feed the cake 200 g (7oz) unsalted butter, softened 200 g (7oz) dark brown muscovado sugar 1 tbsp treacle 4 medium eggs, beaten 250 g (9oz) plain flour 1 tsp mixed spice 1/2 tsp ground allspice 75 g (3oz) walnut pieces
1. Put dried fruit and dates into a large non-metallic bowl. Stir 2tbsp tea leaves into 200ml (7fl oz) hot water and pour over fruit, together with the gin. Stir to coat fruit, then cover bowl with clingfilm and leave to soak overnight at room temperature. 2. Preheat oven to 140°C (120°C fan) mark 1. Grease and line base and sides of a 20.5cm (8in) round deep cake tin with baking parchment, making sure it comes 2cm (¾ in) above the top. Wrap a double layer of baking parchment around outside of tin, and secure with string.
3. In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar and treacle with a handheld electric whisk until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in eggs – if mixture looks like it might curdle, beat in 1tbsp flour. With a large metal spoon, mix in flour, remaining tea leaves, spices, soaked fruit with liquid, and walnuts. Scrape into prepared tin and level surface. 4. Bake for 3¼ -3½ hr, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in tin for 30min, then take out of tin (keep parchment around cake) and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.
To Store & Feed
Wrap the cooled cake (still in parchment) in a couple of layers of clingfilm, then cover with foil. Store in a cool place. After 2 weeks, unwrap, prick cake all over and pour over 1tbsp gin. Rewrap and store as before, feeding cake every few weeks for a stronger flavour. Store for up to 3 months
Celebrate two great British drinks in this delicious Christmas Cake recipe.

POISONING CASES! I don’t know whether it’s me, and I’ve been unfortunate recently in seeing more than my fair share of cases of poisonings, but these seem for some reason to be on the increase. It may just be that the pet-owning public are more likely than ever to look something up on Google – and then what they find scares the living daylights out of them – so they quickly ring us up for advice! Anyway, I thought it would be topical in this issue to cover a few things ‘out there’ which are well known as being potentially toxic to dogs, and maybe a few which you’d never appreciated as may cause harm.
ONIONS
Hot dogs and burgers are often on sale at events in the autumn but the onions which go with them are potentially toxic to dogs. In fact, all vegetables like this – onions, spring onions, leeks, garlic and chives – and it doesn’t matter if they are cooked or raw (and let’s face it, yer average Labrador isn’t that bothered either way) contain a chemical which causes anemia by destroying large numbers of red blood cells. So, along with the vomiting and diarrhoea you get the signs of anaemia as well: depression, weakness, very pale membranes and rapid shallow breathing. Treatment is generally to support the body systems while the anaemia improves: fluids via a drip line, and activated charcoal into the guts to mop up any remaining irritant chemicals. The trouble with diagnosing and treating this condition is that the signs only come on several days after the onions were eaten, so it’s not always easy to make the connection.
promptly we can easily make them vomit and bring up all the fruit. Using a drug called ‘apomorphine’ which has a spectacular vomiting effect on dogs, once this has kicked in pretty much everything the dog has eaten over the past hour reappears, and so it is stopped from being absorbed by the gut. Not particularly pleasant for the dog admittedly, but much better than suffering the effects of raisin poisoning – acute gastroenteritis, followed by the strong possibility of kidney failure. The way in which raisins and grapes produce these effects isn’t known, and some dogs are totally unaffected by eating grapes and raisins, but if in doubt it’s probably better to make the dogs sick to remove the potential problem from the system.
CHOCOLATE
This is a well-known risk, and we see many cases of this throughout the year, particularly at Christmas, for obvious reasons! Prising the lid off a tin of Quality Street, for instance, is the work of an idle moment for some dogs, and they’re not over fussy about whether there are soft centres, nuts or toffees, the lot gets eaten, wrappers and all! Again, one of the first things we do in these cases is to use apomorphine to make the contents of the tin reappear. Although this is rather less than palatable than the first time round, sometimes the dog is suitably keen to give it another go… The worst cases of poisoning involve eating either milk or plain chocolate, particularly whole bars of the stuff, as these contain the greatest amounts of cocoa powder. And it’s that which causes the theobromine
UNUSUAL POISONINGS
Fireworks – dogs will sometimes eat spent fireworks, which still contain some sodium chlorate, and that can cause irritation to the guts – beware this as Bonfire Night is soon on us. Light sticks / luminous necklaces – dogs will sometimes bite into these if they are discarded on the floor and absorb the chemicals which produce the light. Nothing much to worry about generally, though again there is colicy discomfort and lots of drooling. Mushrooms – beware these, as the same effects occur in dogs as can in people. That applies to the magic variety as well! Antifreeze – now is the season when people drain their car radiators and refill with antifreeze solution. Dogs find this quite sweet and will happily drink the stuff if it’s dribbling down your drive, even when it’s diluted with water. Fortunately, this is one poison where there is a definite antidote: intravenous alcohol!! Horse wormers – if you’re a horse owner and worm your horse orally with a paste like Pramox, and the like, beware that for a few days after, your horse’s droppings are potentially toxic to any dog that might find them just what he needs on a cold winter’s morning. The levels of the wormer passed through the gut of the horse can be substantial, and quite poisonous to dogs. Cats are far more choosy about what they eat and are rarely poisoned – but all parts of lilies, whether leaves, petals, stamens and so on, rapidly produce renal failure in cats if ingested.
The best advice is that if ever you are in any doubt about whether your dog has eaten something potentially poisonous, ring the surgery pronto – remember, we have one of our own nurses answering the phone 24/7, you’re not put through to some out-of-hours answering service.
GRAPES / RAISINS ETC
There is a good public awareness of the poisonous effects of these on dogs, again whether cooked in fruit cakes, or raw, as in a bag of raisins that a Labrador just happens to have found in a kitchen cupboard… The signs of abdominal discomfort / colic are seen pretty quickly, and in dogs that are brought to us

poisoning – the substance in the cocoa that dogs can’t handle – resulting in an absolutely massive overstimulation of the heart, together with seizures and kidney problems.

on the water, sailing and powerboating, but we also take part in traditional camping and other adventures too such as abseiling and Zorbing. It’s a great way for young people to meet and make friends in a safe environment and to develop their skills to help them grow into responsible young adults. One new leader, Jeremy, commented, “I have such a fantastic time helping young people gain real transferrable skills that help them develop into confident individuals and have heaps of fun at the same time. For me, Scouting is all about giving something back, so that the young people can experience the opportunities that I was lucky enough to have that positively influence them for the rest of their lives. It doesn’t happen without adults helping. Scouting has taught me so much that I get just as much out of it as the kids do.”
The Group, which is the only Royal Navy Recognised Scout Group in Cornwall, has been delivering everyday adventure, fun and challenge to young people and adults for more than 80 years. Throughout that time the young people that have been though its doors have gone on to be key influencers in their local community. Whilst managing a job and a busy life, the unpaid leaders volunteer time each week to plan and run activities for their young people and have just as much fun as the kids. Within 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts, young people have tried a wide range of new activities. Our activities revolve around fun
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
Creating opportunities for young people to develop social skills, independence and form friendships is central to scouting philosophy and has long term positive impact on young people lives
present, there are nearly 38,000 young people on waiting lists as more and more young people want to experience the adventure of Scouting. Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults and we are always looking for new volunteers, so if you fancy a go at sailing, camping, and just making memories and having fun, why not join the adventure at 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts. So For further information please contact Ian Cocklin on 07580 052271 or email 6thfalmouthscouts@gmail.com
One of the challenges that the Scout Movement faces is finding more volunteers to plug the current gap. Anyone over the age of 18 can volunteer. You do not need any experience, just a willingness to have fun, and to learn. At

Just over two years since the Prime Minister’s landmark Modern Slavery Act came into force, Anti-Slavery Day represents an ideal opportunity to assess just how far we have come in our fight against this horrendous crime.
Impressive progress has been made in raising awareness of this barbaric crime and sending a resounding message that the UK will not tolerate the exploitation of the vulnerable.

Three years ago this scourge was firmly restricted to the shadows; the term ‘modern slavery’ was hardly in the public consciousness, while it remained a brutal reality for thousands of people living all around us – often exploited in plain sight. Today you would struggle to find someone who couldn’t name an example of this appalling crime – from a domestic servant, to a young man or woman forced to work for many hours at a car wash for little to no pay. We as a country are now painfully aware of the suffering being inflicted every day. And thankfully we are seeing new prosecutions brought each month and thousands of innocent victims protected. But the problem is far from solved and it is not going to be without further action to develop our knowledge about this appalling crime and adjust our response accordingly. Earlier this year, the Home Office undertook a comprehensive analysis of the nature of modern slavery in the UK. We were already ahead of most countries in producing a rigorous assessment of the scale of the issue in the country – with an estimated 10,000-13,000 potential victims – but we also wanted to know more about the nature of the crime, to help build on the very limited evidence base around it. Our research, published recently, identified 17 distinct types of modern slavery under four broad groups – domestic servitude, sexual, labour and criminal exploitation. This includes British children being groomed and subsequently enslaved by urban gangs to bring illegal drugs to people in Cornwall and around the country, collecting the money and returning.

This knowledge, while shocking, is essential to developing the best possible response to this terrible crime. We will use it to improve our understanding of how to prevent people falling into slavery. And it will help us to develop further guidance for front-line workers, and to help banks and other institutions identify patterns of behaviour so they can disrupt these predators and help us further raise awareness of this terrible form of abuse. But no matter what we do to eradicate the sickening and inhuman

crimes associated with modern slavery here in the UK, true success can only be achieved by looking beyond our own borders and taking the fight onto the global stage. In 2015 world leaders agreed a new set of universal goals and targets which all countries need to strive for to achieve sustainable development, and the UK successfully pushed for a target on eradicating human trafficking, modern slavery, forced labour and child labour. And in September this year during a Meeting of the UN General Assembly, 37 countries endorsed the Prime Minister’s call to action. At the same time the UK pledged to double its aid spending on modern slavery to £150m. This includes £33.5m funding towards achieving that goal by targeting it in high-risk countries, from where we know victims are regularly trafficked to the UK. Last year the Prime Minister announced £5m of this funding to address modern slavery in Nigeria, and today I am pleased to announce that we will be investing £3m to tackle the issue in Vietnam, from where we know so many victims are trafficked with the promise of a better life, only to find themselves enslaved in brothels, cannabis factories or nail bars. This money will help to catch offenders, support victims and stop people falling into slavery in the first place. The Prime Minister’s Modern Slavery Taskforce is driving forward the domestic and global response, and just this week agreed improvements to the National Referral Mechanism, the system we use to identify and support victims in this country. Those who would profit from modern slavery, are finding it more challenging to ply their despicable trade today than at the start of 2015 – while in the UK victims have a world-leading support network. But we are under no illusion that this is a fight that will be won quickly or easily. it is vital that we continue to develop our knowledge, to adapt our tactics, put invest both locally and globally and, most importantly, put victims at the heart of everything we do if we are to truly consign slavery to the history books.

Could your tumble drier be a Tumble driers, dishwashers and washing machines are often the cause of home fires. The following is a short guide on how to help reduce the risk of fire from your home appliances. 1. Register your appliance Always register a new appliance with the manufacturer. That way you can be contacted easily if a safety recall is required. While the chances of a faulty product causing serious damage are small, the risk is still there and returning a faulty product or ordering its repair is very easy to do. 2. Keep it clean Make sure you get the lint and fluff professionally cleaned out from your drier. 3. Check marks Watch out for scorching or burn marks, and check for loose or worn wires. 4. Get it serviced Be sure to have your appliances serviced annually by one of A1’s qualified engineers.
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
5. Don’t overload your appliances Never overload your tumble dryer. Avoid this by taking large or bulky items such as duvets to the dry-cleaners. 6. Complete the cycle fully Always allow each drying programme, including the “cool down cycle”, to complete fully. Don’t stop the dryer before the end of the cycle unless all items are quickly removed and the door is left open to dissipate heat. 7. Watch out for combustible substances Be sure to leave clothes contaminated with combustible substances such as solvents, grease, oils or fats out of tumble dryers. 8. Turn it off overnight Don’t leave dryers, dishwashers and washing machines on overnight. If possible, unplug or switch off
all appliances at the socket overnight and when going out to avoid the risk of an electrical fault causing a fire. Take advantage of A1’s Winter Special Offer - have your Tumble Dryer serviced and internally cleaned from lint build up , plus any other domestic appliance in your home electrically safety tested free of charge all for only £60.00. This simple service could save a life!
