Rosemullion Pet Page While small kittens and puppies may be adorable, older pets are just as loving and loyal as their younger counterparts and here at Rosemullion, we love the oldies! So, since November is Senior Pet Awareness Month – here’s how to keep your pet happy and healthy in their golden years. By Rachael Parkin
NUTRITION IS KEY
CHANGE OF HABIT
Good nutrition is important at every age, but feeding tailored food for older pets is especially important. For example, a lot of ‘senior’ dog food has more fibre content and less fat, which helps make them feel fuller, so the dog can be fed larger portions without gaining weight. Extra pounds on older pets mean more stress on their body and joints. It can be much easier for older pets to become overweight due to a natural low in energy, or if they have mobility difficulties and aren’t burning off as many calories as they once would. It’s important to adjust the amount of food you’re giving to your pet. Overweight pets have a higher incidence of diseases such as diabetes, liver disease, skin disease, even cancer. Consult your vet if you are worried about weight loss or gain – most veterinary practices offer regular weight clinics with a registered veterinary nurse, which helps advise on the best type of foods, the correct amount to feed and can help keep track of any changes in your pets weight.
It shouldn’t be surprising that an aging pet has needs that are different than those of a juvenile, but when can you tell if your pet is reaching their ‘senior’ years? We all know that the lifespan of our pets varies depending on breed, size and lifestyle however, most cats and dogs are considered ‘senior’ from age 7. Due to improved veterinary care and dietary habits, pets are living longer now than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and veterinarians, are faced with a whole new set of age-related conditions. Before any medical signs become apparent, behavioural changes can serve as important indicators that something is changing in an older pet, which may be due to medical or other reasons. As the owner, you serve a critical role in detecting early signs of disease because you interact and care for your pet on a daily basis and are familiar with your pet's behaviour and routines. If your pet is showing any change in behaviour or other warning signs of disease, contact your veterinarian and provide them with a list of the changes you have observed in your pet. Sometimes, the changes may seem
contradictory - such as an older pet that has symptoms of hearing loss but also seems more sensitive to strange sounds. END OF LIFE CARE Upsetting though it is, putting a pet to sleep is sometimes the best course of action to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering. Your vet will be able to help you decide when the time is right and what’s best for you and your pet. Many factors will play a part in the decision and talking each through with family, friends and veterinary staff will help. Remember we are here to help. ENJOY EVERY MOMENT As humans, we have the privilege of being there for our pets from beginning to end. Anyone who has experienced the unconditional love and affection of a furry friend, knows what a pleasure it is to have something so precious in your life. As much as we may wish they could live forever, we have to remember that we get to have this experience over and over again and give so many animals a wonderful, fun-filled life. Whether you have them from birth or you rescue them from unwanted circumstances, that pet will be your loyal companion for as long as they can. So spend time with them, as much as you can. It will be the best kind of friendship you have ever known.

Clean Ice A brand new service to assist Cornwall’s thriving food and beverage industry
H
ow many of you remember the BBC and Daily Mail reports revealing that the ice served from ice machines can often contain more bacteria than that found in lavatories, due in part to the fact that lavatories are cleaned on a regular basis, unlike the ice machines that distribute the ice. Ice is found in many aspects of the food-service industry. It is used in drinks and for the presentation of fish, salad and fruit. However, as ice is not generally the main focus, many in the food industry forget that it must be treated in line with food hygiene standards. Ice machine cleaning unfortunately falls into the category of one of those jobs that are put on the ‘to do’ list which can result in potentially harmful bacterial exposure to customers and staff.
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
Stephen Trezona, MD of Clean Ice, recognised the need for a professional ice machine cleaning service, so set about understanding the processes required to ensure the service his company offered were fully compliant with the high standards food hygiene regulators expect. He took the advice of Cornwall Council and set up a primary authority partnership with them and from there, extensive discussions were held before the launch of this innovative ice machine cleaning service. They use state of the art technology to establish the level of bacteria present and if it falls below the acceptable limits, set about cleaning the machine and associated equipment with industry approved chemicals and materials. They will not leave the establishment until their post clean test registers a pass

level, from which they issue a Clean Ice pass certificate. “Our aim is to raise the standards in Cornwall to fit alongside the excellent food and beverage service industry. We have spent months researching, in order to provide a service that is affordable and fully professional and thank the Primary Authority partnership with Cornwall Council for facilitating this.” Clean Ice is proud to be launching in Cornwall and has long terms plans to take the service to a National level. To book a FREE ice hygiene assessment at your venue, which includes a scientific measure of bacteria levels, visit

Beryl's BITES
INGREDIENTS
3. Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/ gas 2. Line a deep 20cm cake tin with a double layer of baking parchment, then wrap a double layer of newspaper around the outside – tie with string to secure. 4. Add 175g plain flour, 100g ground almonds, ½ tsp baking powder, 2 tsp mixed spice, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground cloves, 100g flaked almonds, 4 large eggs and 1 tsp vanilla extract to the fruit mixture and stir well, making sure there are no pockets of flour
HAZELNUT CRUNCH MINCE PIES
1kg mixed dried fruit (use a mix of raisins, sultanas, currants, cherries, cranberries, prunes or figs) zest and juice 1 orange zest and juice 1 lemon 150ml brandy , Sherry, whisky or rum, plus extra for feeding 250g pack butter, softened 200g light soft brown sugar 175g plain flour 100g ground almond ½ tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cloves 100g flaked almond 4 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extracte
Jazz up your homemade mince pies by adding grated apple and orange zest - try a pretty star shaped lid, finished with a crisp nutty topping
METHOD
1. Put the flour, half the hazelnuts, the icing sugar and butter in a food processor and blitz to a sandy texture. Add the egg yolk and 1-2 tbsp water, and blitz briefly until the dough clumps together. Tip out onto a work surface and knead the dough a little until smooth. Flatten to a puck shape, wrap in cling film, then chill for 30 mins. 2. Mix the mincemeat, apple and orange zest in a bowl. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unwrap the pastry and roll out on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Stamp out 12 circles with a 10cm fluted biscuit cutter and use them to line a 12-hole muffin tin. 3. Fill each pie with the mincemeat mixture. Scrunch up the pastry trimmings and re-roll to the same thickness as before. Stamp out 6 circles using an 8cm cutter, and 6 stars. Put the remaining hazelnuts in a dish and lightly whisk the egg white in another. Brush a little egg white around the inner rim of each pie, then brush one side of each pastry lid, and the stars. Press each lid into the hazelnuts, egg-side down, so they stick, then lightly press on top of the pies, nutty-side up. Repeat with the stars and place these on the remaining pies. Bake for 20 mins or until golden and crisp. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 mins, then scoop out and cool on a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar before serving. Will keep in a sealed container for 3 days.
INGREDIENTS
For the pastry
250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 100g chopped hazelnuts 75g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 140g cold butter, cut into cubes 1 egg, separated

Christmas at Trevince, Gwennap
T
revince is again opening its doors for its annual Country House Christmas at Trevince.
Nestled in beautiful countryside overlooking the village of Gwennap, the impressive country house of Trevince stands in beautiful grounds, woods and parkland. Trevince has been in the same family since 1281 and the current owners are the 26th generation to run
the estate, working hard to find new ways to diversify and keep the estate thriving for future generations. This year the gardens were open to the public for the first time and preparations are under way for next year’s season. Ordinarily their private home, Richard and Trish Stone will open Trevince’s doors to the public once again for the fourth Country House Christmas at

W
hat better way to enjoy the autumn than a beautiful coastal or inland walk? iwalk Cornwall is an amazing little app that I use regulary! They have devised over 240 walks in Cornwall, ranging from 2 to 10 miles, totalling over 1000 miles! Each walk has a map of the route, detailed directions, photos and notes on the heritage and natural history. The walks are classified by length, steepness grade, type of scenery (coastal, moorland, riverside etc) and, of course, whether there’s a pub! The walks are all available via their guided walk mobile app - a “SatNav” for walking, describing exactly when and what
HELFORD PASSAGE
The walk follows paths and a lane through the mediaeval farmstead of Bosveal to the pretty creekside hamlet of Durgan. From here the walk follows a coast path diversion around a collapsed cliff which takes the route past the gate into Glendurgan gardens before once more following the Helford River to Helford Passage. At The Bar, the route turns inland and passes the entrance to Trebah gardens then crosses the top of Porth Navas creek where oysters are still fished as they were in Victorian times. The remainder of the walk is on footpaths across daffodil fields, through woods and on small lanes.

to do next, and giving you information about the local area as you walk around the route. Search the App Store or Google Play for “iWalk Cornwall” to install it. If you don’t have a smartphone, the walks are available to browse on the web. These are a few of my favourite walks that I have done so far, and I have to add, you will not be disappointed! The app is so user friendly and easy to follow. The app is FREE, you just pay to download the walk you want to do, it’s that easy. Just scan the bar code and it will take you straight to the walk! Ashley :)
FEOCK TO DEVORAN
The route passes St Feock’s Holy well and follows tracks to the creek at Penpol. From here, the walk follows bridleways and footpaths above Restronguet Creek to reach Devoran. The walk then follows the route of the tramway that carried tin ore from the mines to the smelters on Point Quay, with an optional low-water route across the creek. The final part of the route is to Feock Church via the old postal route which used to terminate in a boat crossing from Restronguet Point.
DOGS
One stile has a gap which medium dogs are likely to fit through but very large dogs might need to be lifted over. Less athletic dogs may also need help over another of the stiles

The evening starts when schoolchildren representing the town’s primary schools, gather on Events Square with decorations and colourful withy lanterns. They are joined by a community choir and band and of course Santa before processing through the town towards The Moor. Once on The Moor, each school sings a Christmas carol on the state-of-the-art-stage before the big switch-on. The evening is organised by the Falmouth Town Team as always and compered by Pirate FM. Diary for November • Now is a good time to plant Magnolias so you get the benefit of the beautiful spring flowers • Keep on gathering up rose leaves to help prevent infections like blackspot next year • Clear away old foliage from herbaceous perennials and lift and divide any overcrowded clumps. This helps to keep the plants vigour so giving a better display • Lift parsnips after they have had a frost so this helps the flavour • Divide Rhubarb once they are dormant • November is the best time to spread manure on the veggie plot to give maximum time for it to rot down over the winter • Stake large cabbages, cauliflower etc. to prevent them rocking in the wind. It is also worth covering

them with a net to prevent the birds from eating them • The bare root fruit season starts from late November and goes through to mid-March. This is by far the best time for planting fruit trees and bushes • Check stored fruit regularly and remove any bad ones straight away • Apple and Pear trees can be pruned from December onwards but they must be fully dormant before pruning starts • Keep clearing fallen leaves off the lawn. I know it is a bit of a repetitive job but it is important to do to avoid dead spots on the lawn and to keep it healthy • Raise pot plants off the floor to prevent waterlogging • Clean garden tools and wipe with linseed oil to prevent rust

he UK leads the world on tackling climate change. We have decarbonised faster than any major economy, reducing our emissions by 38% since 1990. Yet we know we need to go further and faster, which is why Parliament supported the world-leading net zero target. Now the Government must outline a strategy, concrete policies and a road map on how we are going to get there. Climate change and decline of our nature is the most serious threat we face. Unchecked, it will lead to more extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, damage precious natural habitats, and cause sea levels to rise. The response must therefore be similarly comprehensive, and action must be taken across our whole economy. I am confident that we can do this. Why? Because there is comprehensive concern and support for action. We are an imaginative, creative, innovative nation and have what it takes to rise to this challenge. It’s an opportunity to grow our economy more sustainably. What’s good for nature is good for human health and wellbeing. Every week I have meetings with people from a wide range of organisations - all fully invested in seeing us succeed in meeting our net zero target. In every meeting, there is agreement on what the challenge is and why we need to take action and the conversation moves onto the how and when they can play their part. If we are to harness this enthusiasm and expertise, we will first and foremost need to provide more information about the Government’s plans. Not everyone will read the 277-page Committee on Climate Change (CCC) net zero report, or even the 630-page Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on the impacts of 1.5 degrees of global warming, or the daily announcements on action to reach net zero coming from different government departments. It’s hard for businesses, public sector organisations or individuals to find impartial, accurate information about how they can make an impact by making changes. In going for net zero, we need to bring people with us, and that means empowering them to make different choices. The Government can provide that information by sharing its data and expertise on, for example, the smartest way to get to work or school, what local British food is in season and sustainably grown, and the suppliers of the cleanest forms of electricity and heating. This should be provided in one place, where any individual, councillor, business or student can find out all they need to know to reduce their carbon footprint. Information for business and public sector organisations about how to access support to innovate too. We have world leading universities and tech companies and I would like the Government to set up an Eco Tech Innovation Fund so we can harness this expertise to create user friendly and accessible apps and websites that seamlessly compile impartial and accurate data and explain what people can do and how they
to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216
can access support. Businesses also have an important role to play. It has been great to see businesses come forward with their own net zero targets, such as the water industry which has committed to carbon neutrality by 2030. To give hope to the citizens who are so worried about climate change this information should also be captured so people can see what all sectors of our society are doing. To level up the expectation on all businesses to take action, the Government should require goods for sale to include climate impact on their labelling. The requirement could cover items of food, electronic goods, and so on. It would help consumers make smarter choices when shopping and get companies measuring the carbon footprint of individual products. This will add a cost to business and that is why we must create a level playing field by insisting it is provided. We don’t want to see businesses doing the right thing undercut by those that don’t. Information is power and will enable every workplace and home to make smarter choices. All this activity needs central coordination and I would like the government to introduce a new 'net zero test' for every Budget and Spending Review, to ensure all new government spending and investment is aligned with the target or at least isn't harming decarbonisation efforts. The Government could ask the independent Office for Budgetary Responsibility (OBR) to scrutinise whether the test was being met. All the businesses I speak with want some clarity and certainty about what the government wants them to do, so they can start pricing in the changes they will need to make. Many see this as an opportunity not only to do the right thing but to innovate and reach new markets. Government departments and their arm's length bodies should lead by example by making their buildings more energy efficient and switching to low emission transport. This will save money as well as carbon. The climate change movement fails when it fails to bring people with it. As we saw in France, we have to make it clear why action to tackle climate change matters and ensure people aren’t left behind as we transition to new cleaner industries. It can’t just be about distant international summits with acronyms that few people understand. When the UK hosts the international UN climate summit in Glasgow next year, it must ensure that every sector of society, everyone is involved in the conversation. With an issue as big as climate change, we need everyone’s collective brainpower to find the right solutions and we must have everyone on board if we hope to implement them. Post Brexit we need a unifying national purpose and I believe this is it. By enabling comprehensive action across the whole of society, with everyone involved, we can now start rebuilding a truly United Kingdom. One we can all be proud of.
