Rosemullion Pet Page May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month so Team Rosemullion would like to introduce you to very special little man who has been brightening our days for the past few months, despite going through chemotherapy treatment at our Falmouth Hospital.

THE STORY OF JAFFA

nodes under general anaesthetic was the quickest and most effective way to obtain a definitive diagnosis. Fortunately, Jaffa was showing no other physical signs of feeling poorly so the prognosis was looking fairly positive at this stage.

Jaffa is a 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier X who has been coming to Rosemullion ever since he was a pup! Back in September last year, Jaffa’s owner brought him in for a little check-up as she had noticed 3 lumps that had appeared below his jaw. After a full clinical exam from our veterinarian Jen, it was advised that we take some bloods from Jaffa and a small sample (Fine needle aspirate) of the lumps to send to the lab for further testing. The results of the bloods showed some marked changes and unfortunately, the cytology results from the samples were suggestive of lymphoma - (also termed lymphatic cancer) a type of cancer involving cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes. For a more complete diagnosis, our external lab recommended some more advanced testing which was completed, alongside contacting a specialist veterinary oncologist for advice on the best treatment options available. Having spoken to 2 other specialist practices for advice, our veterinarian Jen advised Jaffa’s owner of the different options going forward and it was decided that a biopsy of the lymph

The biopsy results allowed us to confirm that our previous diagnosis had been correct, permitting us to proceed with chemotherapy treatment including weekly blood tests and occasional urine tests throughout. Having been quite a few years since our last chemotherapy patient, we made sure to review all our policies and procedures surrounding the use of chemotherapy drugs in practice, ensuring that our staffs, other clients and Jaffa’s family were not affected by his treatment. As well as coordinating the delivery days and times for each chemotherapy session, as these drugs have to be specially ordered and delivered using an overnight courier for use on the same day. This was particularly interesting when the weather decided to take a turn for the worse, and unload a few inches of snow across the country back in February, as you might remember! On 5th October 2018, Jaffa came in for his first chemotherapy session, having completed a blood test 2 days previously to check that we were happy to go ahead. Over the following weeks Jaffa had regular chemotherapy sessions at our Falmouth Hospital with our dedicated vets and nurses. The protocol consisted of 4 weeks of treatment followed by a week off, 2 cycles of this and finally one treatment every other week for the final stage

of treatment. Jaffa was always happy to see us – with an infectious attitude that couldn’t fail to put a smile on everyone’s faces! Of course, there were some ups and downs but Jaffa will have completed his chemotherapy treatment just in time for Pet Cancer Awareness Month! He has experienced a little weight loss, as well as some hair loss around his face but otherwise he has been the perfect patient. I think it is safe to say that Jaffa has stolen a little piece of our hearts over the past 9 months and we are excited to see him enjoying his freedom now that his treatment is complete. We look forward to seeing his handsome face and infectious personality for many more years to come!

Similar to humans, our pets are living longer due to advances in medicine and an emphasis on preventive care and nutrition. Living longer lives exposes our animals to diseases of aging, especially cancer. An estimated 6 million dogs and nearly 6 million cats will be diagnosed with cancer this year. For further information, visit fetchacure.org or contact your local veterinary practice if you have any concerns.

THAI SPICED FISH PIE Try serving with stir-fried Asian greens with a little chilli and lime

METHOD

Beryl's BITES

1. Preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 2. In a saucepan, gently fry the onion, garlic, lemongrass, and chilli for 3-4 minutes.

3. Add the coconut milk, milk and kaffir lime leaves. Bring to the boil, and then turn down the heat to a bare simmer.

4. Add all the fish to the saucepan and poach for six minutes. Remove the

fish pieces from pan with a slotted spoon and put them into a 23x23cm/9x9in baking dish. Reserve the remaining poaching liquor. 5. In a new saucepan, melt the butter, add the flour, and cook for one minute, stirring constantly. 6. Gradually add the poaching liquor, whisking to keep it smooth. Add the lime juice and zest, bring to the boil, then simmer five minutes, stirring all the time. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 7. Add the peas and coriander, then pour the sauce into the baking dish until the fish pieces are almost covered. 8. For the topping, mash the cooked potato and sweet potato with the butter and spring onions, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 9. Spread the topping over the fish, making rough peaks with the back of a fork, then bake for 25 minutes. Finish it off under a hot grill to crisp up.

athan of ‘Truro Dog Grooming’ is Truro’s newest City and Guilds professionally trained dog groomer. respected dog groomers, the award winning, Eve Somers. Nathan delivers the quality cut, professional service and relaxed atmosphere your beloved dog deserves and will love. client by listening to you and them, to ensure they remain relaxed and calm throughout, so you can happily leave them feeling confident and totally assured of their well being. All of the cuts are breed specific but can be tailored to your dog upon request, one style of cut does not fit all. ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear

gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres.

Walks in Cornwall with bluebells

Newton's News

You would be forgiven for thinking that MPs are exclusively, focussed on Brexit. Important though that is, so are all the other priorities of my constituents. Supporting our vital public services is a top priority for many local people. Thanks to significant investment and the dedicated work of our NHS leaders and professionals, local health services are improving. I was instrumental in making the case for changes in the formula used by NHS England to allocate funding for our local services. Past and recent changes better reflect the needs of our community and the costs of delivery. Every year our NHS funding has increased and will do for the next four years. There is more to do but it is good to see improvements for patients noted by the regulator and the hospital inspectors of the Care Quality Commission. I work closely with our local NHS leaders, securing Cornwall’s fair share of funding and supporting their development of new services. This year we will see the publication and public consultation of the Mental Health Strategy for Cornwall. Along with a significant increase in mental health services for people of all ages. The increased use of social prescribing by more Cornish MPs is making a really positive difference too. I believe that the interventions of NHS England is helping Treliske turn a corner and significantly improve patient safety and timelines in accessing services is. Treliske has always been highly rated for the quality of care provided by staff to patients. I have been working with our Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Ms Alison Hernandez, to raise concerns regarding community policing. I am concerned that we simply don’t have enough visible policing in our community. So I am pleased that my concerns were listened to and our Police will receive more funding. The number of Police Officers will be increasing to 3,015 by 2019/20, an overall increase of 115. They will continue with our team of 200 existing PCSOs. The focus of this investment to date includes a significant increase in the capacity on roads policing and road safety as well as an increase in the number of armed response officers across Devon and Cornwall. Road safety is one of the major issues raised by the public across our communities, last year we saw over 800 people killed or seriously injured in road accidents across our two counties. Through the Police’s new road safety strategy they are increasing the number of officers focused on roads policing and road safety by 24. This includes an additional 15 police constables, a sergeant and an inspector in the specialist roads policing unit and a dedicated proactive enforcement and prevention team ‘No Excuse’ targeting driver behaviour and the Fatal 5 causes of accidents - speed, fatigue, drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts and distractions

24 FALMOUTH Wave

like using mobile phones while driving. Many of these officers are already in place – the new No Excuse Team launched earlier this year. In addition to more officers, there has been investment in the roll out of Body Worn Video (BWV) across all of our police officers in order to better protect officers and victims, catch criminals and provide transparency to the public. While I believe it is essential to have visible community policing, especially for crime prevention, I understand that crime has changed and now most crime is invisible, perpetrated at home and often online. Fraud and crimes involving sexual harm, violence and abuse occur more than the ‘traditional’ crimes of theft. As crime changes so does the police response and in addition to funding local policing there continues to be increased investment into our regional and national crime specialist agencies, protecting people from the serious and organised criminals who trade in so much human suffering from scams, drug dealing and child sexual exploitation to human trafficking and modern slavery. I am proud of the new crimes that this government have created, along with stiff sentences and support for victims. Keeping people safe is the first responsibility of any government and I will continue to do all I can ensure that the Police have the resources and powers they need to prevent crime and keep us safe. A key theme of my work since 2010, has been enabling our much valued public services to work more effectively together and with other organisations in our community. This is particularly important when supporting the most vulnerable people in our communities. A good example, is this work that our local Police are doing in Falmouth with St Petrocs, Addaction, the NHS, our local councils, businesses, church and voluntary groups to support people who are misusing substances, with mental health problems who are spending much of their time in the town centre and sometimes sleeping rough. The government has given considerable extra money to Cornwall Council to eradicate rough sleeping. There has been significant progress here in helping individuals to get back on their feet and on with their lives. Much more needs to be done and close partnership is the key to success. Just like you,I don’t want to see people sleeping rough and living without hope. I will continue to do everything I can to support all those people who are working so tirelessly to improve people’s lives here.

• Start to harden off half hardy annuals, Dahlias and Cannas before planting out after (hopefully) the last frost! • Trim back spreading plants like Aubrieta when they have finished flowering. This will encourage fresh new growth and more flowers. • Allow spring bulb foliage to die back naturally to rejuvenate the bulb for next spring. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses. By laying the stems horizontally will encourage more flowers. • Tie sweet peas to plant supports to encourage them to climb • Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering • Feed and water containers and remember to keep doing them throughout the summer. A liquid feed every 2-4 weeks will promote healthy growth and healthy plants are less susceptible to diseases • Water all young fruit trees and bushes. The main reason for losing new fruit trees and bushes is lack of water. Keep the soil moist. This applies equally to young ornamental trees • Harvest Rhubarb but only ever pick a third of the amount of stems • Plant Grafted Tomatoes and Cucumbers. Grafted plants are much stronger, have better disease resistance and can give up to 4x the crop of a standard plant

• Pinch out the growing tip of Broad Beans as soon as the beans start to appear at the base of the plant. This should help to reduce the risk of black fly attack • Keep up the rotation of salad crops so you don’t run out • Keep on top of the weeding throughout the garden. Why waste water and nutrients on weeds • Hang pheromone traps in plum trees and apple trees to help prevent codling moth attacks and to monitor plum fruit moth • Remove fruits from trees in their first year. The tree needs the energy to develop into a good healthy strong tree and not to produce one or two low quality fruits • Regularly check your gooseberries for saw fly caterpillars. It is amazing how quickly they will decimate gooseberry bush leaves • Net soft fruits to prevent the birds from enjoying your fruits • Lay straw under strawberry plants to keep the fruits clean and off the ground and cover with a net to keep the birds off • Feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy green growth • Increase humidity in the greenhouse on hot days by damping it down. This may deter red spider mite. Ventilate to help stop overheating on hot sunny days
