BEWARE ADDERS!!!
I wrote about adder bites last year around this time, but I make no apologies at all for reproducing pretty much the same article again now, as I’m sure with the sunny weather we’ve been having we will see our first cases of adder bites in dogs. See also our Facebook site: www.facebook.com/rosemullionvets where there is also a piece on adder bites.
Most adder bite cases occur between April and July. The snakes generally hibernate from October to March, but if the weather is warm enough they can be seen as early as February and as late as November. Most bites tend to occur in the afternoon when adders are more active and when the heat from the sun is at its maximum – they love to sunbathe!
More importantly, the weather has warmed up after the winter chill, the hedgerows are greening up and the swallows are back! Now, not only do we like that sort of weather, especially the sun, but adders like to bask in it as well. Also, adders are just coming out of hibernation, so are still generally a bit dozy; and their venom is also fairly concentrated compared to later on in the year. We commonly see cases in dogs walked on heathlands and clifftops, so the Towans at Hayle, on the Goonhilly Downs, areas of the coastal path, are favoured sites, and last year we had a new location, around Stithians lake. They seem to be getting more common as the years go by.
3. Where are adders found?
However, before you start panicking, bites are still quite rare, as usually adders are not aggressive, and will hear and / or sense dogs in their vicinity, so will retreat into their nests. Also, the most important thing to remember is that treated promptly and appropriately, approximately 97% of cases make a full recovery. The following information will help to answer some of your questions regarding adder bites:
Their habitats include sand dunes, moorland, heathland, rocky hillsides and the edges of moorland – well, that’s pretty much the whole of the county! Particularly favourite spots seem to be the Hayle Towans and Goonhilly Downs, but they’re also about on the coastal paths too.
4. What are the signs that my dog has been bitten?
Most bites occur on the face, inside the mouth, or the front legs, which are the bits of the dog within easy reach of the snake as they sniff at it – and sometimes you will hear your dog yelp or cry when an adder has struck. Bites will cause swelling of the affected area within two hours, and it’s often dark-coloured and can become quite severe and painful. Sometimes you will also see two puncture marks in the centre of the swelling. Your dog may be lame or seemingly just ‘below par’, but in more serious cases they may have pale gums, bruising, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, and be quite lethargic. Worst case scenario is that they collapse, have breathing difficulties, start having tremors, and may deteriorate into convulsions, though that’s very rare.
5. What should I do if I think my dog has been bitten?
If possible try to carry your dog to your car to try and reduce the spread of the venom via their circulation. Keep him quiet and warm while contacting your vet. Using a cold water compress on the affected area may help to limit some of the swelling. If you have an antihistamine like ‘Piriton’ to hand then that could be useful BUT DON’T GIVE IT unless you have contacted your vet first.
1. What do adders look like?
Most adders are distinctively marked with a dark zig-zag running down the length of the spine, and an inverted ‘V’ or ‘X’ shape on the neck. Adults are 50-60cms long, and their colour ranges from light grey/ brown to almost black.
2. When should I start to worry about my dog being bitten on a walk?
4 FALMOUTH Wave
The severity of the bite, and therefore the treatment that your dog will get, depends on - The location of the bite: face and mouth are worst as the venom quickly gets into the circulation from the hefty blood supply to the face - The size of dog: most commonly it’s terriers who are affected, but the bigger the dog the bigger their circulation and the more dilute the venom - The amount of venom injected by the snake, thought to be worst early in the season - The amount the patient moves post-bite, hence why we advise carrying the dog to a car - Any pre-existing disease your dog may have, such as kidney or liver problems (which would reduce the dog’s ability to detoxify the venom), or heart disease (which might intensify clotting problems and circulation failure due to shock). However, these serious effects only occur in around 5% of cases, so don’t panic!!
Pictured is “Harry” who was bitten on the face whilst walking on The Lizard a few years ago. He was promptly treated with intravenous fluids, European Adder anti-venom, and pain relief, and recovered sufficiently to be discharged in 24 hours! One last thing to add to all our cat owners out there … it is possible for your cat to be bitten by an adder as well, though MUCH less likely!!
6. What will my vet do to treat my dog and how will he respond to the treatment? Treatment for adder bites involves pain relief, intravenous fluids to support the circulation, specific “European Adder anti-venom” given intravenously in some (but not all) cases, antibiotics, and they will be hospitalised for monitoring. We don’t use the anti-venom on all cases as there is a risk of an allergic reaction of the dog to it (which could be worse than the bite), but in a lot of cases there’s no choice.

What many people might not know is that they battled with poor mental health at various points in their lives. The taboo of mental ill health kept these struggles from the history books. I’m heartened to see that in my lifetime we are much more open and willing to talk about mental ill health, with the recent Mental Health Awareness week an opportunity to turn up the volume on these conversations. Well-known figures from entertainment, sport and politics have bravely opened up about their own personal struggles, helping to bring mental health out of the shadows. Now more

Evidence shows that by providing early and evidence-based interventions to those who suffer trauma and neglect in the early years, the trauma can be stopped from becoming entrenched, reducing the need for long-term mental health support, and dramatically improve prospects in later life. So it should be a priority of our local commissioners of health services to ensure that the record levels of funding provided to them is spent on not only physical health conditions but also on responding to the needs of victims, such as those who suffer child sexual abuse and neglect. Given that 75% of mental health problems begin by the age of 18, it is essential that we have a stronger focus on children’s mental wellbeing more generally – with better support for children in school and a renewed emphasis on building emotional resilience. But in too many workplaces talking about mental ill health remains the last taboo – and this needs to change. There is a growing body of evidence that good work is good for our health and that being out of work can have a detrimental effect on our health and wellbeing.
The latest employment figures show that there are now 32.3 million people in work – including more than 3.5 million disabled people. There are opportunities for everyone to enjoy the benefits of employment if they are well enough to do so, including those with mental health conditions.
But if we are to feel those benefits, what is equally important is that our workplace provides an environment that supports good mental health. The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week was stress. The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 12.5 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety, affecting 526,000 workers. Failure to address poor mental health costs employers between £33 billion and £42 billion a year – that’s a cost of between £1,205 and £1,560 per employee. This is something which cannot be ignored, and it’s essential that Government and businesses join forces to tackle this taboo. Already, we’re taking innovative action across employment and health services to ensure support is joined up around people so they get the best possible chance to succeed in work. We’re more than doubling the number

of employment advisers working in the NHS by 2019, enabling greater provision of integrated psychological treatment and employment support. And we’re at the forefront in testing different models to join up health and employment support in a range of healthcare settings, for example in GP surgeries and Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services. On top of this, our Access to Work scheme provides personalised support for people whose disability or health condition affects them in the workplace and can include assistive technology, interpreters and our Mental Health Support Service. This week we reached a milestone of helping 11,000 people with mental health support. This support provides people with tailored support and has an extraordinary success rate with 93% of people who have used the service still in their jobs after six months. We’ve developed an enhanced mental health training programme for Jobcentre Plus work coaches too.
But there is more to do. We know that poor mental health affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. It doesn’t discriminate, and affects around one in four across their lifetime. That’s why this Government has put improving mental health at the heart of our plans to improve the well being of all our citizens.

Diary forJUNE • Plant up containers and hanging baskets now that the risk of frost has gone. • Plant out bedding. Now there are no risks of frost • Lift and divide clumps of crowded bulbs • Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well-watered until they establish, that means all of this summer. • Pinch out the centres of plants before they go leggy, particularly plants like fuchsias and hanging baskets plants • When sweet peas start to flower, keep picking them to encourage more flowers • Dead head old flowers to encourage new flowers • Cut away old bulb foliage as soon as it has died down • Stake any tall flowers like poppies and delphiniums to stop them being blown over in the wind • Pinch out any side shoots on tomato plants and feed with a good tomato feed when the first truss is forming
• Harvest salad crops regularly and re-sow every 2 weeks to keep a continuity of supply • Harvest new potatoes. These are normally ready about 10 weeks after planting • You still have time to plant runner beans in early June, ideally planted straight into the ground • Prune plum and cherry trees. • Make sure the greenhouse is vented on warm days. • Check plants daily in the greenhouse for water and water if required. They dry out very quickly in a greenhouse • Damp down your greenhouse on hot days. This will increase humidity and help deter red spider mite • If we have a long spell of dry weather, set the lawn mower higher to reduce the stress on the grass • Water pots and baskets regularly, even if we have had rain they may well still need watering • Keep bird baths topped up with fresh, clean water

Superhealthy Salmon Burgers
Method
1. Tip the salmon into a food processor with the paste,
ginger, soy and chopped coriander. Pulse until roughly minced. Tip out the mix and shape into 4 burgers. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, then fry the burgers for 4-5 mins on each side, turning until crisp and cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, use a swivel peeler to peel strips of carrot and cucumber into a bowl. Toss with the vinegar and sugar until the sugar has dissolved, then toss through the coriander leaves. Divide the salad between 4 plates. Serve with the burgers and rice
Make these burgers in a batch and freeze for a quick easy meal!

They responded with a super fast and friendly service. They really knew what they were doing, kept things simple and repaired my washing machine quickly. Thank you A1” Lisa
www.atlanticblindscornwall.co.uk “I own a rental property in Falmouth. They are always quick and offer a great service. On ringing for advice about a dodgy fire risk tumble dryer, instead of trying to flog me a service/new one they told me how to get a cheap replacement from the company. Really genuine advice greatly appreciated” Metheven “Over the years, I have used this company many times. The staff go above and beyond the call of duty, give an excellent service are efficient and reliable. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending A1 Appliances to others” Toops
