POISONING CASES!!
I don’t know whether it’s me, and I’ve been unfortunate recently in seeing more than my fair share of cases of poisonings, but these seem for some reason to be on the increase. It may just be that the pet-owning public are more likely than ever to look something up on Google – and then what they find scares the living daylights out of them – so they quickly ring us up for advice! Anyway, I thought it would be topical in this issue to cover a few things ‘out there’ which are well known as being potentially toxic to dogs, and maybe a few which you’d never appreciated as may cause harm. ONIONS
GRAPES / RAISINS ETC There is a good public awareness of the poisonous effects of these on dogs, again whether cooked in fruit cakes, or raw, as in a bag of raisins that a Labrador just happens to have found in a kitchen cupboard… The signs of abdominal discomfort / colic are seen pretty quickly, and in dogs that are brought to us promptly we can easily make them vomit and bring up all the fruit. Using a drug called ‘apomorphine’ which has a spectacular vomiting effect on dogs, once this has kicked in pretty much everything the dog has eaten over the past hour reappears, and so it is stopped from being absorbed by the gut. Not particularly pleasant for the dog admittedly, but much better than suffering the effects of raisin poisoning – acute gastro-enteritis, followed by the strong possibility of kidney failure. The way in which raisins and grapes produce these effects isn’t known, and some dogs are totally unaffected by eating grapes and raisins, but if in doubt it’s probably better to make the dogs sick to remove the potential problem from the system. CHOCOLATE
Hot dogs and burgers are often on sale at summer events / barbecues but the onions which go with them are potentially toxic to dogs. In fact, all vegetables like this – onions, spring onions, leeks, garlic and chives – and it doesn’t matter if they are cooked or raw (and let’s face it, yer average Labrador isn’t that bothered either way) contain a chemical which causes anemia by destroying large numbers of red blood cells. So, along with the vomiting and diarrhoea you get the signs of anaemia as well: depression, weakness, very pale membranes and rapid shallow breathing. Treatment is generally to support the body systems while the anaemia improves: fluids via a drip line, and activated charcoal into the guts to mop up any remaining irritant chemicals. The trouble with diagnosing and treating this condition is that the signs only come on several days after the onions were eaten, so it’s not always easy to make the connection.
4 FALMOUTH Wave
dog is suitably keen to give it another go… The worst cases of poisoning involve eating either milk or plain chocolate, particularly whole bars of the stuff, as these contain the greatest amounts of cocoa powder. And it’s that which causes the theobromine poisoning – the substance in the cocoa that dogs can’t handle – resulting in an absolutely massive overstimulation of the heart, together with seizures and kidney problems. We have a ‘ready reckoner’ which can fairly easily calculate the amount of theobromine that a dog might have consumed if you can tell us the type of chocolate and the size of any bar, which gives an idea of whether you and we should be concerned or not. UNUSUAL POISONINGS Fireworks – dogs will sometimes eat spent fireworks, which still contain some sodium chlorate, and that can cause irritation to the guts – beware this as Bonfire Night is soon on us. Light sticks / luminous necklaces – dogs will sometimes bite into these if they are discarded on the floor and absorb the chemicals which produce the light. Nothing much to worry about generally, though again there is colicy discomfort and lots of drooling. Horse wormers – if you’re a horse owner and worm your horse orally with a paste like Pramox, and the like, beware that for a few days after, your horse’s droppings are potentially toxic to any dog that might find them just what he needs on a cold winter’s morning. The levels of the wormer passed through the gut of the horse can be substantial, and quite poisonous to dogs. Cats are far more choosy about what they eat and are rarely poisoned – but all parts of lilies, whether leaves, petals, stamens and so on, rapidly produce renal failure in cats if ingested.
This is a well-known risk, and we see many cases of this throughout the year. Levering the lid off a tin of Quality Street, for instance, is the work of an idle moment for some dogs, and they’re not over fussy about whether there are soft centres, nuts or toffees, the lot gets eaten, wrappers and all! Again, one of the first things we do in these cases is to use apomorphine to make the contents of the tin reappear. Although this is rather less than palatable than the first time round, sometimes the

The best advice is that if ever you are in any doubt about whether your dog has eaten something potentially poisonous, ring the surgery pronto – remember, we have one of our own nurses answering the phone 24/7, you’re not put through to some out-of-hours answering service. We also have access to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service for advice on potential poisoning by more exotic possibilities!

Apple & Blackberry Crumble Method
1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Tip the flour and sugar into a large
bowl. Add the butter, then rub into the flour using your fingertips to make a light breadcrumb texture. Do not overwork it or the crumble will become heavy. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over a baking sheet and bake for 15 mins or until lightly coloured.
2. Meanwhile, for the compote,
peel, core and cut the apples into 2cm dice. Put the butter and sugar in a medium saucepan and melt together over a medium heat. Cook for 3 mins until the mixture turns to a light caramel. Stir in the apples and cook for 3 mins. Add the blackberries and cinnamon, and cook for 3 mins more. Cover, remove from the heat, then leave for 2-3 mins to continue cooking in the warmth of the pan.
Pre-cook the crumble topping to avoid gluey, uncooked crumble and retain the texture of the fruit

HOPKINS JOINERY Made to last!
H
ave you recently marvelled at the exceptional finish on the recent remedial works carried out at Penryn Fire Station? This joinery and dual colour finish is down to the hard work of local firm, Hopkins joinery.
Exposure to weather, poor and inappropriate paint applications can often lead to rotting wood and hence the need for replacement joinery. Hopkins however have come up with a solution and line of products to help overcome this. Instead of just fitting the doors and windows and leaving the finish to others, they ensure their goods leave the workshop professionally finished, so allowing for just a small touch up on site. They utilise Teknos coatings, which whilst being far in advance of the products available on the DIY market, also help prevent rot build up and in doing so sustain the life of the wood. All their joinery hardwood or redwood is initially treated with Boron Ultra, a low disturbance, enviro and
user-friendly product, that treats for insect and rotting. This is followed by 2 coats of Teknos anti stain primer and two top coats, that ensure 7-10 years before a reapplication through a simple recoating process, so no need for the annual paint job! Its breathable nature prevents the trapped moisture that spritbased gloss paints cause and can be matched with most of the major paint charts, so there is no restriction on colour that some industrial paints often have. Their air assist spray booths, which eradicates those uneven brush lines, will also ensure the finish is something to be envied by all your neighbours. They have just made it easier for individual home owners to benefit from their high-quality products by standardising designs for double French doors and box sash windows and to avoid any unexpected surprises, they all come with affordable set price tags.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Hopkins joinery do their bit for sustainability by supplying bespoke wooden products from their joinery off cuts. Mostly available via the internet, they have enjoyed increased sales in items such: as wooden dowels (6.5mm to 45mm);

Diary for September • Autumn bedding such as Pansy, Violas, Cyclamen and Primroses are now ready for planting. • Think about ordering new fruit and ornamental trees. Autumn/ winter is the best time for planting • Order your soft fruit bushes such as Raspberries, Blackcurrants, Gooseberries etc. ready for autumn/winter planting • Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well • Help your Pumpkins to ripen ready for Halloween by removing any leaves that are shading the fruits • When Beans and Peas have finished cut them off at ground level but leave the roots in the

You will need 5 x 4” circles of red felt, 2 x black felt circles, 1 x 2”, 1 x 3”, black seed beads, small piece of ribbon and a needle & thread.
Fold 4 of the red circles in half, then half again and put a small holding stitch through the point.
3. Using the last red
circle, place the 4 folded circles together, with the 4 points touching, arranged open side to folded side. Stitch each one through the back circle to attach them.
4. Using the smaller black circle, place it in
the centre, thread on a black seed bead and see through to the back. Place the larger black circle on the back and see through. Repeat sewing beads on until the front has enough on it. Finally sew the piece of ribbon to the back so that the poppy can be hung up. Alternatively, sew a brooch back on so that it can be worn.

Newton's News
A
s a fairly frequent passenger on the London Underground I am often reminded to ‘mind the gap’ between the train the platform. While this gap is important it’s not the gap that I am most focussed on. I don’t think we are destined to travel a certain route just because of the place we start from. Everyone should have the chance to fulfil their potential. It is fundamental to our ideas of fairness and social justice because progress for our society should be progress for all, but especially for the most disadvantaged, the ones who start with the odds most stacked against them. Thanks to the hard work of our teachers and to our reforms, 1.9 million more children are now being taught in Good or Outstanding schools than there were eight years ago. That’s 88% of children, up from 66% in 2010. The Pupil Premium delivers support for those children who come from a less affluent backgrounds. And, importantly, we’re making sure that those interventions can be based on good evidence – through the independent Education Endowment Foundation. Whereas once we measured a school’s performance by its A-C pupils in five subjects at GCSE – now, through progress 8, everyone’s progress counts towards the key measure. This stops a disproportionate focus on the C/D borderline, to the detriment of others at both ends of the scale. The number of 19 year olds without GCSEs in maths and English is now at a record low. And, critically, since 2010 the gap in early years development has fallen by 14%. This is a good start in terms of reducing the gap, but there is more to go. Right now, 28% of children finish their reception year without the early communication and reading skills that they need to thrive. But why do gaps like these matter? Ultimately, our education stays with us. We know there are opportunities for people, whatever their background – great schools, worldclass universities and a thriving job market, so there are options. However, new analysis from the Department for Education looked at how children on free school meals and children with special educational needs, go on to fare in the job market. And the results are striking. Children eligible for free school meals when they are at school are 23% less likely to be in sustained employment at the age of 27, compared to their peers. And, in fact, it’s a similar result for children identified with special educational needs – 25% less likely to be in sustained employment at 27. Stark facts like these call for an ambitious policy response. Research shows that what happens between the ages of zero and three has the biggest impact in changing someone’s future path. That is why this government has prioritised extend-
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
ing high quality pre-school education and childcare. For the first time, we introduced 15 hours of free early education a week for the most disadvantaged two year olds, including looked after children, children with special needs and children of low income families. That is on top of the 15 hours free childcare offer for all three and four year olds, which we doubled to 30 hours for working parents. And we are now seeing more children start school ready and able to learn. But despite encouraging progress, entrenched challenges remain. Most pressingly, it is a persistent problem of children starting school and struggling to communicate, to speak in full sentences. And this matters. Because when you’re behind from the start you rarely catch up. On average, disadvantaged children are four months behind at the age of five. That grows by an additional six months by the age of 11, and a further nine months by the age of 16. So, by the time they take their GCSEs they are, on average, 19 months behind their peers. It is command of language, being able to express ourselves effectively, that is the gateway to success in school – and in later life. The government is expanding high quality school-based nursery provision and investing in training and development of early years professionals. However many more hours of nursery you provide and however much younger and younger you go, the truth is that the majority of children’s time is spent at home. While official statistics show the amount of time parents spend on development activities, such as playing and reading with their children has risen significantly, it has diverged and the gap in this time investment between parents from more and less advantaged families has actually widened. I am a parent myself and I know you are not born knowing how to bring up a child. Some of it is instinctive, but most of it isn’t. I know parents can welcome advice and help. Successful public health initiatives like the 5-a-day campaign have become part of the national consciousness. The government wants to find similar simple solutions for busy parents to help their children’s language and literacy and is holding a summit this autumn, with a wide range of organisations, to explore innovative ways to boost early language development and reading in the home. Please let me have your ideas to feed into this very important work.
