REGAINING THE BODY BEAUTIFUL….

R

eading this in December, I trust that like me, you’re making efforts – if only mentally! – to try not to indulge as usual over the Christmas period. People always joke that health clubs get you to join in January when the memory of your New Year’s “get fit” resolution is fresh in your mind and you’re still in earnest about keeping that resolution. Well, your pet may need the same sort of attention – if only hopefully preventative! – and it could help you: exercising them exercises you too!

it’s quite possible they are asleep outdoors somewhere. If they are active young cats then they are probably getting enough exercise by just being an outdoor cat. But indoor cats are a different matter. The cat that loves nothing more than to sit on the chair or windowsill all day watching the world go by is far more likely to suffer from increased weight gain. And it is a very real problem that in later life obese cats develop diabetes (as we can), with all the hassles and costs involved in treating and monitoring the condition.

An overweight pet is far more likely to have long term health problems, just like us. If you think your pet is a little more “cuddly” than usual the first thing you should do is call your vet to give them a thorough examination to check for medical conditions that may be causing the weight gain. In the majority of cases where there has been an increase in their weight there are usually no underlying medical causes – it’s just good living. So, if this really is the problem you should ask your vet about weight clinics. Most surgeries run them and they are often organised by the nurses for relatively little cost. These clinics will be able to advise you on diets and will be able to help and support you in monitoring and managing your pet’s weight.

The simple answer is to indulge in regular play. Cats are naturally curious animals and small fast-moving objects will cause the innate chase

Dogs

This is really a book in itself, suffice to say at least one daily walk is the best idea; it benefits both pet and owner. In essence your dog’s weight reflects the balance between daily intake of calories versus calories burnt by exercise. The more you exercise the more you can eat, or the way I look at it, an hour in the gym buys 2 glasses of red wine! Of course, you have to be careful if your pet has a clinical condition which might make it difficult to exercise them too much – e.g. arthritis or a cardiac condition – but then limitations like that make it even more crucial that you should keep an eye on their weight, or let the vet nurses do it for you.

Cats

Cats are natural hunters and many cats are only seen once or twice a day by their owners, as the rest of the time they are out and about, although

4 FALMOUTH Wave

response right from when they are kittens. Most mature cats will continue to show it, particularly when they have practised it all their lives. Try rolling small balls such as one of those practice golf balls which have holes in, or even easier, a scrunched-up piece of paper tied to piece of string and pulled erratically will get their interest. Pingpong balls are equally good! Furry, feathery or flapping things are particularly attractive to cats, but with kittens especially, although you should replace such toys as they start to get damaged in case parts get swallowed. Patches of bright light, such as the reflection from a watch face or mirror, often get cats chasing, and laser lights are really good fun, both for the owner and the cat!

Pet Passports – an overview for pet owners pre and post-Brexit Pet owners will still be able to travel to Europe with their pet after the UK leaves the EU, whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. However, in the event of no deal, they may need to take some additional steps to be able to travel with their pet to the EU. If pet owners are planning to travel after 29 March 2019 the Government will recommend they contact their vet at least four months in advance to check what they need to do. Those wishing to travel to the EU on 30 March 2019, for example, should discuss requirements with their vet as soon as possible. The requirements for travel would include making sure that pets are effectively vaccinated against rabies before they travel. This involves having an up-to-date rabies vaccination, which may need to be renewed despite the fact that the legislation at the moment deems it still ‘current’, and a blood test to demonstrate sufficient levels of rabies antibody. The blood test would need to be carried out a minimum of 30 days after any initial rabies vaccination and a minimum of three months before their travel date. There is also the rare possibility that the vaccine has not stimulated sufficient immunity and the whole process has to be reconsidered. This means that pet owners will need to talk to their vet about health requirements in good time to make sure they are able to travel with their pet. The Government has published further information on its website: www.gov.uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-europe-afterbrexit www.gov.uk/government/publications/taking-yourpet-abroad-if-theres-no-brexit-deal/taking-yourpet-abroad-if-theres-no-brexit-deal but of course the situation remains fluid as we just don’t know what is going to happen and what the requirements will be. Petals & Peas -Faux Floral Designer

Step into a world of beauty - by Ruth Hitchcock

Over the last two years the workshop has become more of a floral studio than a boat shed and Petals has slowly grown and begun to establish itself as must-go-to place for those looking for something different.

T

ucked away at the back of small trading estate in Penryn, you will find Petals & Peas , a busy little workshop where I dream up and create all sorts of beautiful floral designs whilst my two constant companions, Max & Alfie, snore under my workbench. I make each piece myself, by hand with painstaking attention to detail, using only the very best artificial and dried flowers available. The whole thing started a few years ago as a small part-time activity in the garden shed, with lots of freezing cold days spent at craft fairs and markets. In 2017 my husband offered me a bit of space in his boat shed in Penryn, which happened to have a small shop at the front, and of course, Petals moved in!

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

There is a small shop at the front of the workshop in which some of my designs are displayed along with a selection of other beautiful handmade products from small artisan makers around the country. Fed up with always seeing the same thing in the shops I have created a carefully curated selection of unusual and high quality pieces, which are great for the home and to give as gifts. It’s lovely to hear people commenting on how refreshing it is to see something unusual and different in my shop. An added bonus to Petals has been some of the marvellous regular “Petallers” I have met and built friendships with as they pop in for a chat and nose in the workshop. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of Petals and something that really lifts my spirits and makes all the hard work feel worthwhile.

At this time of year there are lots of Christmassy things appearing so it’s a great place to visit to do a bit of Christmas shopping and maybe pick up a treat for yourself. There’s a wide range of beautiful wreaths, garlands, bowers, swags & bouquets to choose from and many more coming. This year I am really excited that Petals has established a small group of stockists around the country ranging from Dublin to Winchester and I plan to build on that in 2019. I also aim to start to offer some workshops and demonstrations next year, but that’s still in the planning stages. Please pop in and say hello and have a look at my work. There is always a warm welcome waiting and a good old lick from the dogs.

f success is guaranteed by the thought and effort placed into how a brand represents you and your products, then Fiona Speed (nee Shepherd) the artist designer and owner of Real [Ray-al] Speed, is really going places. Based on the Spanish meaning of Royal, Real’s brand depiction starts with the crown adorning Galapagos tortoise logo with a billowing sail on its back. This impresa from Cosimo de Medici of Florence, was a reminder to him to find the perfect balance between speed and patience, a philosophy Fiona has adopted in her Festina Lente (Latin) approach to producing her products or literally translated as make haste slowly or more commonly known in Cornwall as ‘Dreckly’! Fiona, a fourth generation Falmouth girl, has fond memories of sewing and

Using the inspiration of sailing, rowing and dance she combines this with her education to create unique clothing and homewares from modern sailcloth and luxury fabrics. Fiona’s enthusiasm for her products is matched by her excitement at being able to promote her creations at her new studio shop in Falmouth. She has a space at the former Shades nightclub which, she enthuses, was also the site of the town gaol in 1660! As a child she often walked down Quay Street on the way to her Grandad Dubby’s (John Smith) fishing boat, the ‘Solan Goose’, a sight she still finds inspirational today. Based at 4 Quay Street, Fiona has enough room to paint and sew many of the items for sale, whilst in the premises. She also has plans to extend into the basement and in doing so will incorpo-

The shop has a real eclectic and unique feel and currently sells, oil paintings; T-shirts; cards; snoods and Falmouth tea towels, with the working boat cushions and bespoke peg bags, the best sellers, slowly followed by (excuse the pun) Real Speed Kernow Tortoise car stickers! These bright and colourful items are only available from visiting the shop although there are future plans to list some items on the website. Anyhow don’t worry about the internet, pop in to see Fiona and just be buoyed by her enthusiasm and zest for her creations. Christmas crafts to add a little sparkle! Glittery Glasses

Decorative Candle

You’ll need a wine glass, PVA glue, a small brush, coloured glitter of your choice and Mod Podge sealer. 1. It’s really easy this one! Simply brush PVA glue onto the glass either as a pattern or complete coverage. As soon as you’ve finished brushing the glue on, put the glass over a piece of paper and sprinkle the glitter over the glued areas. Tap the glass to remove excess glitter then, using the paper, put the excess glitter back in its bottle. 2. When the glued glitter has dried, simply coat with Mod Podge Dishwasher proof sealer using a really soft brush, leave to dry for 1-2 hours, apply another couple of coats and you’re ready to go. Using Mod Podge protects the finish and stops flaking.

1. To start with, you’ll need a pillar candle and a felt tip pen. Either draw or trace your design onto the candle as shown 2. Then, using a black candle wax pen, go over the outline of the design. This will give your finished design definition. 3. Then, using red and green wax pens, fill in your design, keeping within the black lines to produce your finished article. You can also decorate taper candles, this one has gold wax dots to give texture and lift the look of the candle.

hat better way to walk off that Christmas pudding than a beautiful coastal or inland walk? iwalk Cornwall is an amazing little app that I use regulary! They have devised over 240 walks in Cornwall, ranging from 2 to 10 miles, totalling over 1000 miles! Each walk has a map of the route, detailed directions, photos and notes on the heritage and natural history. The walks are classified by length, steepness grade, type of scenery (coastal, moorland, riverside etc) and, of course, whether there’s a pub! The walks are all available via their guided walk mobile app - a “SatNav” for walking, describing

exactly when and what to do next, and giving you information about the local area as you walk around the route. Search the App Store or Google Play for “iWalk Cornwall” to install it. If you don’t have a smartphone, the walks are available to browse on the web. These are a few of my favourite walks that I have done so far, and I have to add, you will not be disappointed! The app is so user friendly and easy to follow. The app is FREE, you just pay to download the walk you want to do, it’s that easy. Just scan the bar code and it will take you straight to the walk! Happy Christmas, Ashley :)

HAYLE AND THE TOWANS

The walk follows the quays where Harvey’s of Hayle once shipped beam engines around the world and enters the dune system of The Towans. The route follows the coast path across the cliffs with views over St Ives Bay to reach Mexico Towans. The route turns inland through the dunes to reach the mediaeval churchyard of Phillack and then descends to Copperhouse Pool which is walled using blocks of slag from the copper smelter. The final stretch of the route is through the King George V Memorial Gardens.

WHEAL MAID AND POLDICE VALLEY

ST AGNES BEACON AND WHEAL COATES

The walk starts at Twelveheads and follows the trackbed of the railway to the lagoons created by the Wheal Maid tailings dams. The walk continues to Crofthandy where it joins a byway leading to the Poldice mine workings. After passing the mine buildings, the walk follows the Poldice Valley, gradually descending to join the Mining Trail. The final section of the walk follows this back to Kilcor Stamps and Twelveheads.

The walk begins from what was a bustling Army Camp in WW2 but has now been reclaimed by the heather. There is a gentle climb to the Beacon from which there are spectacular views in every direction. The walk then returns via some of Cornwall’s most photographed engine houses at Wheal Coates, perched on the cliff edge.

C

hristmas always starts for me when I join the throngs in Falmouth listening to the Harmony Choir. Everyone will have their own festive favourites from the live nativities and Santa runs to some welcome innovations such as the Science at Christmas event at the Poly, enabled by Exeter University. Christmas shopping is such a treat with so many wonderful shops in Falmouth and Penryn where we can buy our Christmas presents and locally produced festive food and drink. There is no doubt that Falmouth and Penryn high streets are a crucial part of our communities and local economies. However, the rapidly changing behaviour of many customers presents a significant challenge for retailers in our town centres and I am pleased that the government announced in the recent budget more action to help our local town centres to evolve. Our Plan for the High Street was one of the announcements. From April 2019 small retailers will benefit from a business rates discount, cutting their bills by a third for two years. The discount will be available to occupied retail properties with a rateable value below £51,000. Up to 90% of all retail properties will benefit, subject to state aid limits. This represents a maximum saving of around £8,000 per property per year. A retailer with an annual bill of £16,203 in 2019-20 (based on a rateable value of £33,000) will save £5,401 a year. In total, the relief is worth almost £900 million to retailers. The relief will be available to a range of retail properties including, but not limited to, shops, restaurants, pubs and hairdressers and local newspapers. To support the transformation of the high street, the government will create a £675 million Future High Streets Fund which will support the establishment of a new High Streets Task Force to help local areas make their high streets and town centres fit for the future. This will provide hands-on support to local areas to develop innovative strategies to help high streets evolve, connect local areas to relevant experts and share best practice. The fund will also support the regeneration of heritage high streets,

30 FALMOUTH Wave

helping Historic England restore the historic buildings that make our high streets special and become destinations that people want to visit. It will also support community groups looking for affordable space by trialling a service to register empty properties. The government is taking further action to strengthen vital community assets, including a 100% business rates relief for public lavatories, many of which are run by our town and parish councils. This is something I have worked with Falmouth Town Council to achieve. Cornwall Council will be fully compensated for loss of income as a result of business rates measures. This may seem like a small thing but it will save our local councils vital taxpayers’ money. The government will also trial a register of empty commercial properties to help prospective retailers to find empty properties and help local people tackle fragmented ownership on their high street. While the business rates discount will provide up front support to the high street, the government is taking long term action to help high streets and town centres evolve and keep up with changing consumer behaviour so that they can remain at the heart of local communities. The £675 million fund will also invest in improvements to town centre infrastructure, including increasing access to high streets, reducing congestion, supporting redevelopment around high streets and enabling housing and new workspaces to be created. The government will consult on modernising planning rules to ensure that they support the transformation of the high street. There will be two consultations on supporting the conversion of commercial properties into offices or homes and the implementation of new mixed-use business models that could form the vibrant high street of the future and on how to support local areas to use other planning tools more effectively. It just remains for me to wish you a very happy Christmas and a healthy and happy 2019.

Diary for December • Climbing roses can now be pruned. Cut out diseased or damaged growth, tie in any new shoots and cut back old flowering side shoots to about one third of their length. • Leave old flower heads on Hydrangeas. They will help to protect the new buds from frost damage • Collect up any remaining fallen leaves • Check climber supports are sound and that the plants are tied in properly to help prevent wind damage • Plant some winter flowering shrubs to give some colour and fragrance to the garden Sarcococca confusa, Lonicera Fragrantissima and Winter Jasmine to name a few • Remove yellow leaves from winter brassicas. They are no help to

the plant but may harbour diseases • Apple and Pear trees need pruning in the winter so this job can be done. Don’t prune Plum’s Cherries, Apricots, and Peaches until the summer • Plant Raspberry canes • Prune grape vines • The bare root fruit season is now in full swing so now is the time for buying and planting your new fruit trees and bushes • Lift and divide Rhubarb crowns. Sections taken from around the outside of the old crown will do better than from the centre • Apply well rooted manure to empty beds and boarders
