Garden
In the Garden British Grown Christmas Trees We now have our British Grown Christmas Trees for sale and we have held the prices for the 4th year running. As this is the last “In the Garden” for 2017 we would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our customers past, present and future a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year
Diary for
December • Climbing roses can now be pruned. Cut out diseased or damaged growth, tie in any new shoots and cut back old flowering side shoots to about one third of their length. • Leave old flower heads on Hydrangeas. They will help to protect the new buds from frost damage • Collect up any remaining fallen leaves • Check climber supports are sound and that the plants are tied in properly to help prevent wind damage • Plant some winter flowering shrubs to give some colour and fragrance to the garden Sarcococca confusa, Lonicera Fragrantissima and Winter Jasmine to name a few • Remove yellow leaves from winter brassicas. They are no help to the plant but may harbour diseases • Dig a bean trench ready for next year’s Runner Beans. Line the trench with newspaper, this helps to retain moisture and will rot away, and throw in all your compostable kitchen waste (not cooked food) over the next month or so. Cover it over with the soil you dug out. Put a marker cane in each corner so you know exactly where the trench is. Beans are hungry and thirsty plants so this will help them along. • Apple and Pear trees need pruning in the winter so this job can be done. Don’t prune Plum’s, Cherries, Apricots, and Peaches until the summer • Plant Raspberry canes • Prune grape vines • The bare root fruit season is now in full swing so now is the time for buying and planting your new fruit trees and bushes • Lift and divide Rhubarb crowns. Sections taken from around the outside of the old crown will do better than from the centre • Apply well rooted manure to empty beds and boarders

CHRISTMAS CONCERNS!
W
e all overeat at Christmas and our pets are no exception. While it’s always tempting to give our pets treats that we ourselves enjoy, some of these can actually be harmful to them. The most common ones to avoid are:
Chocolate – this is probably the best known hazard, and the higher the cocoa content, the more dangerous the chocolate, so plain chocolate is much worse than milk chocolate. White chocolate is perfectly OK – apart from the sugar ‘high’ which may become evident after a short time! The symptoms of chocolate poisoning are: within the first few hours, vomiting, diarrhoea and / or hyperactivity. Later on, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia (a disturbance in the heart beat), muscle twitching, and excessive panting. This can lead to hyperthermia, seizures, coma, and even death. Christmas pudding – this contains raisins and sultanas and there have been reports of dogs developing renal failure after eating even very small quantities of them. Grapes and plums can potentially cause the same problem, although the toxic mechanism isn’t known. Onions – all parts of the plant are toxic to dogs, and it’s possible that other members of the onion family such as leeks, garlic and chives may cause the same problem. Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea, and they’ll be dull and weak, and their gums will be pale. They may have a red colour to the urine and be a bit breathless. All forms of onion can be a problem, whether they’re dehydrated, raw or cooked, so NO table scraps, left-over takeaways or even baby foods for your pet! Lilies – all parts of the plant including the flower and pollen are poisonous to cats and may lead to possible kidney failure and death.
Fireworks – these can be a real problem for some dogs who just can’t take the flashes and bangs, and one of the best products you can get is ‘Adaptil’ – which is an artificial plug-in canine pheromone, the idea being that when this is diffused into the dog’s environment they get a feeling of calm and wellbeing. It works very well, but you can also maximise your dog’s exposure to it by applying it to bedding, in the car, on a dog’s bandana, and all sorts of other situations. It isn’t just a product to counter the startling noise effects of fireworks but generally to calm an over-lively / hyperactive dog down! We can all see why these things might appeal to our pets, but over the last 30 years I’ve had to remove a variety of less tasty objects including: socks, knickers, stones, tennis balls, golf balls, handkerchiefs, peach stones, corn cobs, a washing machine hose, an engagement ring and most bizarrely, a crunched up dustpan and brush! Just be careful!! There are several ‘nutraceutical products’ such as ‘Calmex’ and ‘Zylkene’, which also are useful in reducing a dog’s overall level of anxiety,
to advertise call Ashley on 07800 986216
yet as with ‘Adaptil’ these products are best used for some time before the benefits are required. However, we often get asked for a ‘quick fix’ for anxious dogs who can become quite manic with fireworks going off, and that’s a different matter entirely. Tips to help include giving plenty of exercise to dogs in the day, delaying the evening meal until it just starts to get dark, and then give them a kong with their favourite paste inside. You can keep the curtains shut and put the TV on a loud volume to try and drown things out; and play with your pet rather than just sitting down and relaxing: harder work than normal I know, but it may well pay off. And indeed there are some medications (usually adapted from human medicines) which can be used for a short-term solution – a drug called ‘Sileo’ is the only one licensed for veterinary use in the UK – but all of these must be dispensed by a veterinary surgeon. And we will only advise their use if thought appropriate; sometimes the overall health status of a dog means that unfortunately they can’t be used safely. So all in all, prepare your dog well beforehand and give sufficient time particularly for pheromonal conditioning to kick in – and then you can put your feet up! One more thing on fireworks – if you’re walking your dog the following morning close to where a firework display was held, then beware they don’t pick up redundant Roman candle / spent rockets and the like. Gunpowder is quite salty (so I gather!) and dogs don’t discriminate at all in what they find and then chew up……. Lastly, please don’t buy a pet for Christmas, as they’re a real commitment and long term responsibility. Think first, and then consult your vet who can help you choose an animal that’s right for your needs and lifestyle. If you make the right choice you will have a loving companion for life.
Merry Christmas everyone!!

Christmas Ring Table Centre You Will Need..... An 8” polystyrene ring, 3 sheets of brown felt, natural hemp cord and embellishments to suit. 1.
2.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Cut the felt into 2” strips and wrap around the ring, making sure that the joined ends are underneath, trim if necessary. Secure the ends with double sided tape. In this way, cover the whole ring, overlapping the felt slightly so that no white can be seen. Tie the hemp cord around the ring to start with, and then wind it around the ring at a slight angle. When you’ve done one complete pass around the ring, reverse the direction and cross the hemp over.
3.
Beginning where the hemp is tied, start attaching your embellishments. We’ve used pine cones, raffia, dried orange slices, red berries and green felting wool. Attach these to the ring using either a silicone gel glue or a hot glue gun.
4.
When complete, you can use it as a small door wreath or, as we have shown, a table centrepiece but only use an LED candle,
NEVER a real one!

Newton's News W
hile there is so much more to Christmas than exchanging presents many of us will be. I suspect a new phone or tablet will feature on ‘wish lists’ of presents, especially for children and young people. Of course access to the internet can be hugely beneficial in many ways. The unpalatable and unavoidable truth is that technology has made vile child sexual abuse and exploitation content vastly easier to find - and easier to participate in — through peer-to-peer file sharing, chatrooms and online forums. And it has created conduits that enable abusers to search out and make contact with their victims in new ways. The National Crime Agency tells me it is quite simply one of the most dangerous and harmful threats we face. Since 2013, there has been an exponential surge — a 700 per cent increase — in the number of indecent images of children that technology companies are alerting us to, so that we can identify the offenders and try to track down the children being abused. Each month, there are more than 400 arrests and over 500 children being protected through coordinated action by the NCA and UK police against online child sexual exploitation. Barnardo’s has told us that in the last six months of 2016, nearly half of the children it had supported had been groomed online — that is 297 children. Of these 182 had met their online groomer and suffered sexual abuse. So those are some of the statistics. But let me put a human face, a child’s face, to them. Breck Bednar, from Surrey, was a 14-year-old who loved technology and gaming online, who his mother said never swore or yelled. An excellent student and brother to three younger siblings, triplets who looked up to him and adored him. But it was through this gaming that in 2014 he was groomed and lured to his death — suffering a sexual assault and fatal stab wound, miles from home, at the predator’s flat. The grief of his parents is unfathomable. They do such important work now, warning of online dangers, through The Breck Foundation, set up in their son’s memory to make everyone aware how to keep safe online through education and empowerment. Predatory paedophiles will try to approach vulnerable children (the average age of a child groomed online is 13) by, for example, chatting on a forum connected with a game application, or making an approach through Instagram, Snapchat or WhatsApp. Then there are other sites like MyLoL — which disturbingly
26 FALMOUTH Wave
markets itself as a “teenage dating application” and allows anyone aged 13 to 25 to sign up. There is virtual reality too. Earlier this year a man pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual activity with children on at least 500 occasions. His chosen conduit was MovieStarPlanet — a popular website for children to pretend to be film stars in a virtual world. With the initial approach, there might be an accompanying message, perhaps about the victim’s profile picture, seeking to establish a rapport, which the offender will then exploit to eventually elicit indecent images of the child. Having approached the child on one social networking site, the offender will then often intentionally and systemically move from one online platform to another, switching to “private” one-to-one communication methods such as Skype or live video chat services including Periscope. All of us — parents, law enforcement, schools, peers — have a role to play in keeping our children safe online. Government has given a further £20million over three years through the Police Transformation Fund to law enforcement working undercover online in forums and chatrooms, to identify and disrupt the threat of online grooming. I recently visited our Regional and Organised Crime Unit to see this essential work myself. But it is with absolute urgency that I call on internet companies to also go further and also go faster in tackling online child sexual abuse. We need them to bring their resources and technical expertise to help us turn the tide on this horrendous scourge. It is their moral duty. We have worked closely with industry as they have found ways to identify and take down child abuse images through the “digital fingerprint” created of these images. This is incredibly important, and we need to turn the heat up under it. So, we know that when industry innovates and collaborates, solutions are possible. We need them to do exactly the same in finding ways to interrupt that journey between abuser and victim. None of us ever want another family to have to go through what Breck’s did.

ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear
gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres.

Could your tumble drier be a Tumble driers, dishwashers and washing machines are often the cause of home fires. The following is a short guide on how to help reduce the risk of fire from your home appliances. 1. Register your appliance Always register a new appliance with the manufacturer. That way you can be contacted easily if a safety recall is required. While the chances of a faulty product causing serious damage are small, the risk is still there and returning a faulty product or ordering its repair is very easy to do. 2. Keep it clean Make sure you get the lint and fluff professionally cleaned out from your drier. 3. Check marks Watch out for scorching or burn marks, and check for loose or worn wires. 4. Get it serviced Be sure to have your appliances serviced annually by one of A1’s qualified engineers.

5. Don’t overload your appliances Never overload your tumble dryer. Avoid this by taking large or bulky items such as duvets to the dry-cleaners. 6. Complete the cycle fully Always allow each drying programme, including the “cool down cycle”, to complete fully. Don’t stop the dryer before the end of the cycle unless all items are quickly removed and the door is left open to dissipate heat. 7. Watch out for combustible substances Be sure to leave clothes contaminated with combustible substances such as solvents, grease, oils or fats out of tumble dryers. 8. Turn it off overnight Don’t leave dryers, dishwashers and washing machines on overnight. If possible, unplug or switch off
all appliances at the socket overnight and when going out to avoid the risk of an electrical fault causing a fire. Take advantage of A1’s Winter Special Offer - have your Tumble Dryer serviced and internally cleaned from lint build up , plus any other domestic appliance in your home electrically safety tested free of charge all for only £60.00. This simple service could save a life!
