ITCHY DOGS

I

n the summer, whether or not it’s a decent one – and it certainly is trying to be this year! – we always see a large number of dogs that just can’t stop scratching themselves, and yet no matter how much the owner battles against fleas and other external parasites, there’s no letup for their dogs. Sometimes it seems at the moment as if almost every dog in the waiting room is there because it’s itchy! So if you can rule out fleas, what’s left – and the answer is that the vast majority of these dogs will have irritated skins as they are allergic to something in their immediate environment, producing a condition known as “atopic skin disease”.

WHAT IS ‘ATOPIC SKIN DISEASE’? This is an inherited (or thought to be) predisposition to develop allergic symptoms following repeated contact and inhalation of some otherwise harmless substances such as dust mites, or pollens. The chief sign is the unrelenting need of the dog to scratch itself, whether this is with their claws, teeth, or by rubbing against objects. Atopic animals will usually rub, lick, chew, bite or scratch at their feet, muzzle, ears, armpits, or groin, causing hair loss, and severe reddening and thickening of the skin. In some cases this self-trauma causes further changes to the normal skin structure, with excessive skin drying / skin oiliness / bacterial and yeast infections. So, by the time I see a dog that’s been itching, particularly if it’s been going on for a bit, the original cause may have long since gone, and the skin itself is now the source of the continued irrita-

tion. It’s important to treat these secondary things, like yeast infections with shampoos, and deeper bacterial infections with antibiotics, so we can see if the itching resolves. But if it doesn’t then we have to accept that an allergic cause is very likely – so how do you diagnose that? How do you identify the substances – called allergens – which are causing this skin inflammation? Diagnosis: There are two main ways: (1) intradermal testing, where the dog is injected with small quantities of the most likely irritants, looking for an acute reaction to specific pollens / mites etc; or (2) blood testing. The latter is far less traumatic to the dog, and a single sample can be tested for the dog’s reactivity to several panels of irritants, such as grass pollens, tree pollens, indoor / food mites, the constituents in various dog foods etc. The trouble is that these results are not always 100% reliable, particularly as regards food allergies – and that’s the topic for another month! Treatment: If a blood test or intradermal test is done, and the sorts of allergens which are irritating your dog are identified, then a vaccine can be specially made up – unique to the allergen sensitivity of your dog. Usually 50-60% of animals will improve, something like half having an excellent response, and the other half with a reasonable response but maybe still needing drug treatment. How it works is that the vaccine is used to fool the dog’s immune system into dealing with artificially large levels of antigens – in the injections, or nowadays also given under the dog’s tongue as droplets – so that when they meet natural levels of allergens their immune systems hardly register them, so the dogs don’t scratch. Avoidance of the allergens: this is difficult but various things like washing the pet bedding weekly in the hottest water possible, wiping down your dog with moist cloths after going outside, and frequent bathing, with a non-irritant shampoo like ‘Etiderm’, all reduce chances of the pet coming into contact with the allergens. Antihistamines: these work in some atopic dogs, the most widely used example being Piriton, but there is a relatively new drug developed called ‘Apoquel’, which is much more potent and we have used it on numerous dogs with excellent results. It aims to reduce scratching within four hours of taking the first pill by targeting the chemical released by the action of pollens and so on, which stimulates the skin nerve endings to cause the

irritation! Again, there may be a need to use shampoos and other treatments to get the best results. In a similar way there is now a monthly injection called ‘Cytopoint’ which works in the same way at Apoquel at simply stopping the production of the chemical which irritates the nerves.

Fatty acid supplements: certain types of oils can reduce allergic symptoms in some patients, and they are believed to work together with antihistamines. In particular, EPO supplements, or fish oil capsules can work, often in conjunction with a low-fat diet. They improve the outermost layers of the skin so that pollens find it more difficult to penetrate. Topical steroids: these are gels or creams that contain a steroid, and which can be applied direct to the skin, particularly on ‘hot spots’. One problem is that if they are applied to hairy areas of the dog they can tend to dry on the fur and create a cakedon crusty layer, under which a skin infection can start up, so these must be applied with care. Oral steroids: the mainstay is prednisolone, which works very well, but has potential side effects and is reserved for adult animals, those with short seasonal problems or where other therapy is not possible or is ineffective. Typically, treatment is started at a highish dose, and then tapered off to being given only every other day, or every three days. Its great advantage is that it’s cheap! Cyclosporins: these immunosuppressive agents – ‘Atopica’ is the veterinary preparation – can be used at low doses to treat allergies successfully in about 60% of patients, and are helpful in lowering dosages of steroids. The major short-term side effect is a gut upset, so they are not ideal, but they have a place in treating this condition. The upshot of it all is, if your dog is scratching itself to pieces, go and seek advice, but be prepared to have to deal with a condition that at best can only be controlled, and probably never cured.

PAINTING THE TOWN PINK Supporting Cornwall Breast Cancer Team and Breast Cancer Now The committee were delighted to be invited to Breast Cancer Now Research Centre recently and all of them found the visit to be inspirational and informative. It was great to see firsthand the difference that research is making in the treatment of breast cancer and knowing that Pink Wig is helping to support this. It has always been the team’s passion to help towards research as their founder Sally Hicks-Wood motto was ‘until we are all safe’. This year’s theme is ‘Pink Goes West’ and as usual all that is essential is that you are female, over 16 years of age and wear a pink wig! Tee shirts are available and fancy dress is optional. The evening will start at Palacio Lounge for anyone wanting a cocktail before the parade, the parade will leave the Moor around 6:15 alongside the infamous Marine Band to go the Events Square marque to be entertained by DJ Nate Valentino, live band The Strutts, Embrace Dance Fitness Zumba warm up and some refreshments will be available from Nelly’s and Wild Vibes. Of course a photo booth for some fun photos will be available courtesy of DJ in Cornwall. The pink wig team will be providing a welcome drink and pink wig cocktails, and prosecco will be available from the Pink Wig Bars and other drinks available from Southwest Bars!

10th August sees Pink Wig Ladies Night kick off the Falmouth Week events once again.

The Team are hoping to reach the £100,000 mark for total raised in the 8 years that they have been fundraising for Breast Cancer Now and The Cornwall Breast Care Team. Last year was a sell-out event and this year is already looking like it will be another!

Victoria’s Dance Academy

W

hat better way for individuals, both young and old, to exercise and express themselves than through the art of dance. Victoria’s Dance Academy is the largest and most well established in Falmouth and is proud to have produced some of the best dancers in the County. Victoria Keast, principal since 2010, certainly knows what it takes to be a success in dance. Her training was carried out and completed at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance, London and Dance Academy South West, Bristol. She has also performed professionally in musical theatre productions. Victoria holds the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies and Certificate in Dance Education, which give her Registered Teacher Status with the two leading Examining Boards in the country; Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. The syllabi taught is Government recognised and approved by the Q.C.A. The Academy is a place where you can dance for fun and for some it provides

the perfect grounding for a career in dance. Indeed, many ex-students have gone on to have successful careers in the industry, working in the theatre, film, music videos and on cruise ships with others gaining places at professional dance colleges such as; Performers College, Arts Educational, Northern Ballet School, Italia Conti, Millennium, Brit School, SLP College and Laine Theatre Arts. Quality teaching and many performance opportunities including festivals and stage shows are provided by a teaching faculty which houses qualified industry professionals with DBS clearances, First Aid certificates and Chaperone Licenses with Cornwall County Council.

Newton's News

T

he summer months more than others bring us closer to our stunning maritime environment and heritage. The recent glorious weather has enabled many more people to experience the simple pleasure of going to the beach or out onto the water. Thanks to many inspirational local people determined to build an inclusive community, more people are able to enjoy these simple pleasures. People with visible and invisible impairments and disabilities are able to get onto the water thanks to Mylor Harbour’s Sail-ability specially adapted boats. Also based in Mylor Harbour is BATs, Cornwall’s sailing club for visually impaired people. I recently met with the Helford Sailing Trust to learn about their ambitious plans to get more people afloat. Then there are the special sand chairs at Gyllingvase beach that enable wheelchair users access to the beach and the sea. Cornwall Mobility, in partnership with Disability Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, works with Cornwall Council as well as a diverse range of coastal charities and businesses in providing all-terrain wheelchairs, also known as sand chairs, for the public to use on a number of beaches in Cornwall. The all-terrain wheelchairs have been designed for outdoor use and have large inflatable wheels which allow them to roll over sand and pebbles with remarkable ease. This has allowed people with mobility challenges the pleasure and freedom to access and enjoy Cornwall’s beaches where they may have found it more difficult in the past. While the wide range of recreational water-based activities available are undoubtedly fun and good exercise as well as enhancing our local tourist economy, they do bring challenges. I was delighted to open the newly refurbished National Coast Watch look out in Gerrans recently. Staffed by volunteers who work in partnership with RNLI and Coastguard volunteers as well as our local emergency services coordinated by the Falmouth Coastguard, they help keep us safe on the sea and around our shores and rescue people if necessary. Together they provide an excellent service in promoting safety of the water and preventing harm. Thank you also to the Royal Naval Association for organising the annual Falmouth Sea Sunday, including the parade from the Moor, a service in King Charles the Martyr Church and a parade to Events Square. My grandfather was an electrician at the docks in Falmouth and, having grown up here, I understand how proud many local people feel

about our close association with seafaring and the Royal Navy. When I was first elected I had the privilege of joining the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme with the Navy. As someone who has not served in our armed forces, this first-hand experience has proven invaluable in my role as an MP supporting our armed forces. As A&P is one of the largest private sector employers in Cornwall, ensuring that A&P Falmouth secures and wins naval and RFA contracts has been a top priority. By working hard and constructively with both the management and trade unions at A&P Falmouth I am proud of our record of achievement. Not only do RFA ships continue to be serviced and maintained in Falmouth, but we won a new and important contract to weaponise some of the support vessels for our two new aircraft carriers. A&P Falmouth is working in partnership with other UK yards and doing well in advancing bids to secure additional defence contracts for the docks in Falmouth, including for the new Type 31 e frigate. I have launched a campaign for one of the new frigates to be called HMS Cornwall. I ensure that Defence Procurement Ministers visit A&P Falmouth to see at first hand the excellent work that is undertaken and the positive relationship that we have with the Royal Navy and RFA. Since being elected I have consistently promoted the industry and was delighted to have secured A&P Falmouth’s involvement with the independent review of British Shipbuilding undertaken by Sir John Parker. All the recommendations he gave to the government for future modernisation and investment have been accepted and I am delighted that the importance to our economy of ports, including Falmouth, is recognised.

Diary for AUGUST • Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas must be kept well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop • Keep all pots, containers and baskets well-watered and feed them. A liquid feed once a fortnight should be sufficient • Keep dead heading bedding and perennial plants. It can be a bit of a chore but it does encourage more flowers • Trim Lavender plants once they have finished flowering. This will help to keep them compact • Cut back Herbs to encourage a fresh growth of young leaves • Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering • Dead head Roses to encourage more flowers • Keep on top of the watering on the veggie plot • Tomato food is a wonderful thing. Because it is high in potash it is good for many plants other than Tomatoes (Sweet corn, Peppers, Cucumbers, Chilli’s and Roses to name a few) • Keep Tomato plants well watered. Trim off those lower leaves and pinch out

the top of the plants when there are 4-5 trusses of fruit • Pinch out the growing tips of Runner Beans to encourage more side shoots and therefore more beans. Once they start producing beans they are best harvested regularly to prevent the beans going tough and stringy • Check for Cabbage White butterfly eggs under the Cabbage leaves. If you find any squash them with your fingers • Clear away any diseased or old foliage laying around • If you have fruit trees or bushes in containers, give them a high potash feed (Tomato food) to keep them healthy and productive • Plant out Strawberry plant rooted runners ready for next years harvest • Keep an eye on the fruit trees such as Plums, Cherries and Apricots. There fruits should be ready this month. • Prune Blackcurrant bushes after harvesting • Watch your greenhouse. Good ventilation and watering are vital • Give hedges a final trim before they stop growing

GAS BOILER SERVICING 5 REASONS TO SERVICE YOUR BOILER

1. You can catch boiler problems early...

It’s easy to forget that you don’t only use your boiler during Winter. You use hot water everyday, so everyday your boiler could be running into issues you might just notice them more when Winter rolls around. Having your boiler serviced annually means that your engineer will be able to identify any problems with your boiler and address them before they do any major (and costly!) damage. Problems with your boiler, no matter how small they may be, will only get worse the longer you ignore them. You don’t want to leave your boiler to its own devices all summer and let it break down when you turn the heating on in November.

2. It’s cheaper than replacing your boiler...

Chances are, servicing your boiler costs less than you think, and it definitely costs less than replacing your boiler entirely. Regular checks and maintenance will keep your boiler running properly, and because you’ll be able to fix any issues right away, your boiler will be less likely to break down later on. A healthy and well maintained boiler will most likely last longer than a boiler that hasn’t been serviced, therefore saving you money on needing to buy a new boiler

3. It’ll save money on your energy bills...

An argument against servicing your boiler is that it costs money - and people often think that it’ll be a waste; however, this isn’t typically the case. As part of your servicing, your engineer will carry out all necessary checks to ensure that your boiler is running efficiently, which can actually save you money over time. Of course, the model of boiler you have, and how old it is, will determine just how energy efficient it can be, but improving your boiler’s efficiency will mean that it’ll use less energy to run, and will subsequently keep your energy bills low.

5. You’ll stay under warranty...

If your boiler is under guarantee, it’s common that this will only apply if you have your boiler serviced on an annual basis. If you don’t service your boiler for more than 12 months, this may void your warranty, so if it does break down, you won’t be able to claim the money for repairs. Be sure to check the conditions of the warranty on your boiler, and if it requires an annual service, make sure you book one in on time you don’t want to be caught out.

4. You can keep your boiler safe...

Not only will servicing your boiler ensure that it’s running efficiently, it’ll also ensure that it’s running safely. According to the Department of Health, 4000 people go to A&E each year with carbon monoxide poisoning, and because the symptoms (headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapsing and a loss of consciousness) can easily be assumed to be due to other common illnesses, it’s crucial that you have your boiler checked on a regular basis. Servicing your boiler can give you peace of mind that your family are safe - or it’ll let you know that you need to carry out repairs before a faulty boiler seriously affects your health.

Our service will include 1. Inspection of your boiler and controls to make sure they’re working properly. 2. Checking your boiler for corrosion and leaks. 3. Taking off the casing of your boiler to inspect the main components. 4. Checking the gas pressure. 5. Testing the flue to make sure it’s not emitting any unsafe fumes. 6. Cleaning the parts (if tests indicate they need it). 7. Putting the casing back on and check the seals. 8. Providing you with a checklist of information about your boiler’s safety.
