Rosemullion Pet Page Here at Rosemullion, we deal with emergencies on a daily basis. So we want to share with you some basic Pet First Aid advice to help you care for your pet in case of such an event. Make sure you’re always prepared. The best action for all emergency situations is to contact the vet as soon as possible, so ensure you know what emergency or out-of-hours service your vet provides, and have their phone number to hand.

Pet First Aid

THINGS TO REMEMBER

your pet seems unhurt, always seek veterinary advice as there could be internal injuries that are not immediately obvious. Take care when transporting your pet, particularly if you think there could be a risk of spinal injuries. In this instance you should attempt to slide them onto a flat surface, such as a wooden board, to avoid any further damage during transport. Cover them with a blanket or towel to keep them warm and calm, and always remember to travel safely. It is never worth putting yourself or others in danger.

First, ensure the safety of yourself and others. Never put yourself at risk. Keep calm and assess the situation before acting. Injured animals are frightened and in pain, and may try to bite anyone who touches them. Approach your pet quietly and slowly, avoiding sudden movements. Always phone first, no matter the circumstances. There may not be a vet constantly at the clinic; however staff may be able to suggest immediate action to take. Sometimes outside normal hours it is difficult to decide whether urgent attention is needed. You can always call to ask for advice.

BLEEDING Now we all know our pets can get themselves in a tricky spot every now and again. Perhaps your dog has a habit of running through bramble bushes, or maybe you live in an area where there is livestock with barbed wire fencing. Regardless of how your pet injures themselves, it is important to know how to deal with any situation. Most cuts and scrapes will stop bleeding fairly quickly and shouldn’t cause too much of a problem, however it is vital to make sure that there is no further damage or cause for infection. Where it isn’t possible to seek veterinary advice, bathing the area with warm salty water can help keep the wound clean and avoid infection. Any wound showing signs of redness, swelling or discharge needs to be seen by a vet. In the event of a more serious wound, where the bleeding is not subsiding, apply a tight bandage. You can improvise with strips of towel or clothing if necessary. If blood is seeping through the first layer, apply another tight layer over the top. Where a bandage is not possible, press firmly onto the wound with a piece of cloth, or something similar, and hold it in place. Make your way to the vets. Remember to phone ahead so that the surgery can make sure there is a vet available to see you when you arrive.

ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS Prevention is better than cure. Even a well-behaved dog should be kept on a lead anywhere near traffic, including slow moving vehicles. Do not have the collar so loose that the dog can get free. Keep your cat in at night, as this is when most road accidents occur. If the worst happens, beware of other cars. Talk gently as you approach. Move slowly and avoid making sudden movements. Even if

BASIC RESUSITATION Knowing the basics of resuscitation for your pet is something we hope you will never need. But for your piece of mind, here is a brief rundown of what to do if your pet stops breathing. Place the animal on their side and check that breathing has definitely stopped – is the abdomen rising and falling (a sign that the animal IS still breathing). If you are certain they are not breathing, open the mouth and pull the tongue forwards, checking for obstructions such as blood or a foreign body. Remove any material from the mouth that could be causing an obstruction. Take care not to get bitten. If breathing is not initiated, it may be necessary to administer rescue breathes and chest compressions. Extend the head (pointing the nose forwards). Hold the mouth closed, blowing into the nose about ten times per minute. If you cannot feel a heartbeat, push on the chest just behind the forelegs every one or two seconds. Give two breaths into the nose for every 15 compressions on the chest.

DERMAPLANING

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation technique that has quickly become a popular aesthetic treatment. The treatment involves using a scalpel to remove dead skin cells and ‘Peach Fuzz’ to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. Dermaplaning delivers fantastic results as a standalone treatment, however, because of the removal of dead skin and hair, the skin will completely absorb any skincare you apply to it, therefore making a great priming treatment for procedures such as Skin Peels.

*Chemical Face Peel £50 *Chemical Face Peel with

Hydrating Treatment Mask £60

Benefits of Dermaplaning • • • • • • • •

Banishes dead skin cells Rids the skin of ‘Peach Fuzz’ Helps to unblock Blackheads Generates new healthy cells Creates healthier, smoother more radiant skin Corrects uneven skin tone and texture Allows greater penetration for skin care products Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Newton's News Throughout my childhood I lived with the fear of the docks in Falmouth closing. I remember my Falmouth School classmates wondering if their parents would lose their jobs or if they would be able to develop their own career in the port. My great uncle was a Falmouth Pilot and my grandfather worked in the docks for a while so, just like so many local families, our futures were bound up in the future of the port. In fact all our futures are bound up in the future of the port in Falmouth and all the other ports around our shores. As a trading, island nation with over ninety percent of everything we consume arriving by sea, maintaining and developing our port infrastructure, ship building and maintenance skills are vital to our national security and prosperity.

When I was elected in 2010, I set myself a personal goal to secure the future of the port of Falmouth, including A&P. There are world leading businesses in the port, including Pendennis Shipbuilders, World Fuel Services and FalFish. Since 2010, these companies have been able to grow their businesses, securing new private and public funding. I was particularly pleased to have been able to officially open the new Eastern Jetty/breakwater last August which is not only vital infrastructure for World Fuel Services but protects the whole port of Falmouth. I have been proud to bring a series of defence ministers to the port to see the excellent work that A&P is doing in supporting our Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ships and I am delighted that A&P recently won new long term contracts for maintaining these important vessels that work alongside and play an invaluable role supporting the Royal Navy. I am also delighted that Falmouth is now the home port for the Royal Naval survey vessel, H.M.S. Scott. During March, I am travelling to Glasgow to the naming ceremony of a new vessel H.M.S. Tamar. She is one of five new Offshore Patrol Vessels that was built in Scotland, part of a significant investment in U.K. ship building, securing thousands of skilled jobs. Building the Offshore Patrol Vessels filled a gap in orders after the completion of the second aircraft carrier and before the Type 26 frigates begin construction. HMS Tamar and her sister ships will be used by the Royal Navy to undertake various tasks including border protection roles, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries patrols, and immigration law enforcement.

For some time I have been making the case for investment in new vessels to work alongside the U.K. Border Force to keep our borders safe and I am very much looking forward to welcoming H.M.S. Tamar into Falmouth. I had the privilege of joining a Border Force Cutter in Falmouth and I discussed their important work with her crew. As a result of conflict, changes in the climate and modern slavery, many people fall into the hands of serious and organised criminals who, along with smuggling illegal drugs and weapons, also smuggle people - the most wicked trade in human suffering. So it is vitally important that we have increased the number of Royal Naval vessels that can patrol our waters, upholding the rule of law and protecting some of the most vulnerable people on the planet. HMS Tamar and her sister ships will also play an important role in protecting our fisheries too. Thanks to the foresight of the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, Falmouth is also the home of an important renewable energy development site, for tide and wave power. Working in partnership with local businesses and Exeter University, Wave Hub is part of the Green Growth plans for the sustainable development of our local economy. Along with the port of Penryn, Falmouth provides many opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy our natural environment with a range of recreational activity from rowing and sailing to recreational fishing. Our local water quality has significantly improved with the leadership of the Environment Agency working with partners and landowners, and investments made by South West Water. This is protecting the natural habitat of important local species such as the native oysters. The port of Falmouth has faced many challenges since the Killigrews secured the charter and I am sure it will face further challenges. But right now, thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and determination of the people who work so hard for the ports of Falmouth and Penryn, our ports have a bright future.

Make a Date and Join the Race For Life in Falmouth

P

EOPLE in Falmouth are being encouraged to make a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Gylly Beach on Sunday, 12 May. Ruth Chamings, Cancer Research UK’s Falmouth Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Cornwall access to the latest treatments. “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. She continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in Falmouth with people across the South West and the whole of the UK. “Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now. Ruth added: “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone women, men and children – has the chance to participate together. “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either

To en te r R ace fo r Li fe to d ay v is it race fo rl if e.org or ca ll 0300 1 23 0770. directly or through a loved one or friend. “To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.” Ruth continued: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.” Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

O

ne sign that your tyres need changing is noticing a deterioration in performance. For example, your car does not handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it normally does, or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes. The fact that tyres wear

gradually can make it difficult to identify the reduction in performance, so it’s best to have them checked regularly and preferably by an expert. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the tread on your tyres is not worn beyond the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres.

From live opera in the garden to country house events, there’s something for everyone.

The King Charles Mummers present....

Curtain Up!

by Peter Quilter, directed by Mandy Rolleston

T

he estate gardens at Trevince, were designed and planted more than 200 years ago in the wealthy mining heart of Cornwall. Within this historic location, you’ll find a haven for plant lovers and curious souls, a place to walk in the footsteps of the past and to imagine the future. Discover the 18th century walled garden, the pond garden and shrubbery and explore the wilderness walk that takes you along the far edges of the estate grounds and woodlands. This exceptional garden features an abundance of spring flowering favourites Camellias and Rhododendrons as well as unique Meyer lemons, which have been growing there since the 1850s. These lemons are a fragrant and sweet cross between a lemon and a mandarin that fruit or flower all year round. Trevince is one of the few gardens in Cornwall to join the International Conifer Conservation Programme that provide a living seed bank of conifers that may be threatened or vulnerable in the wild. The former cart shed has been transformed into a pop-up café serving teas, coffees and a selection of cold drinks. Take a seat after your stroll through the gardens and enjoy the peaceful tranquillity with a slice of cake or some

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

delicious homemade goodies. Events and creative workshops are hosted throughout the year at Trevince. From live opera in the garden to country house Christmas events, there’s something for everyone. Regular creative day workshops include felt making and willow sculpting, the perfect opportunity to get crafty with like-minded people whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Curtain Up! Is the hilarious story of five women. One ex-wife, one new wife, one daughter, one mother and one personal assistant, who inherit equal shares in a dilapidated theatre and plan to bring it back to life again. But first they have to work how to get on with each other and put the past behind. They try various fund-raising schemes but their most ambitious is to hold a concert featuring local talent and a world-famous star who agrees to appear for no fee! However, their plans go awry and it’s a race to keep their audience from guessing the truth of the matter. A fast-paced, and very funny comedy. Dates; 8th to the 11th May. Venue: King Charles Theatre, New Street, Falmouth Tickets: £8, sold by the Cornish Store, Arwenack Street, Falmouth Tel: 01326 315514. On sale from the 8th April 2019.

Located in the heart of Cornwall at Gwennap, the estate gardens and Cart Shed Café are open Friday-Sunday from 29th March to 29th September (10am-4pm). Annual passes are available, there’s free parking and dogs on leads are welcome. Guided tours can also be pre-booked. With the help of green-fingered volunteers the estate gardens are on a journey of restoration and reinvention, so be sure to visit often and be part of the new story at Trevince. Visit the website to find out more about the estate gardens at Trevince and events and workshops during 2019. Diary for April

Spring Opening Hours Monday to Saturday: 9.00am to 4.30 pm

Sundays : Closed

Perennials £2.99 each or 5 for £10

Climbers New season Shrubs

Just off the A39 on the Truro to Falmouth Road, follow the signs for Cornish Garden Nursery Barras Moor Farm, Perranarworthal, Truro TR3 7PE

Tel: 01872 864380

• Apply a layer of mulch around your perennials, trees and shrubs to help slow down water evaporation when the weather gets hot. • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone, Growmore or similar. Lightly fork in to the surface. • Roses are very greedy plants and would benefit from a feed with a good rose fertiliser. • Plant new plants. • If you have plants that need support, get the supports in now, if you haven’t already done so. It is easier when there is less growth and they are supported from their first growth. • Tie in climbing plants and rambling roses. This is an on-going job all season. • Check tree ties firstly to weather they need re-placing and secondly that they are not too tight and strangling the tree. • Prune Forsythia as soon as they have finished flowering. Cut back to strong young shoots. • Trim winter flowering Heathers. This will stop the plant from becoming leggy. • Dead head any daffodils and tulips as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage back. Allow the foliage to die back naturally so the energy goes back into the bulb for next year. • If you haven’t already done so, think about getting your early potatoes in. • Don’t forget to keep a rotation of salad

crops going so you have home grown available all season. • Plant out strawberry beds making sure that you enrich the soil with very well-rotted manure or homemade compost. If you cover your plants with a cloche, it will encourage an earlier crop. • Mulch fruit trees with well-rotted manure or compost making sure it is not against the trunk. • Apply a slow release fertiliser around the bottom of raspberry canes to encourage a good crop. • Apply a high nitrogen feed to your lawn to give it a boost. A good method is to apply a combined fertiliser, weed killer and moss killer. Three jobs done in one! • Now is a good time to be repairing or replacing tired old lawns but if you re-seed or turf, make sure the soil is kept moist. • Before mowing the lawn, brush of any worm castings to avoid leaving small muddy patches. • Mow the lawn once a week but not to lower setting at first. Lower the blade nearer to the end of the month. • Re-cut the edges of the lawn if they have become untidy or broken down. • Top dress containers with new compost. Remove the top couple of inches of soil, moss and weeds and replace with fresh. This is also a good opportunity to top dress with a slow release granular fertiliser.

1. You will need MDF coasters, acrylic paints, dishwasher safe Mod Podge sealer, a stencil, brush and foam application pads. You can decorate your coasters to match your dinner service, your decor, put your family’s names on them, or whatever! 2. Cover the coasters with a coat of acrylic paint.

3. If using a stencil, as shown, tape it down using low tack tape to prevent it moving. Using a contrast colour, dab it over the stencil until completely covered.

4. Remove the stencil carefully and set aside to dry. When dry, apply 2-3 coats of Mod Podge to protect the finish. 5. As shown, you can use die cuts, create marbling effects by adding a pouring solution to the acrylic paint, a metallic effect by gently adding metallic paint sparingly using a brush, and finally, you can use paper that you like to cover the coasters. Again, coat with Mod Podge to protect the finish..
