VISION STATEMENT
Washington Episcopal School students stride confidently into the world, delight in it, and contribute to it.
Dear WES Community,
The transformation from where we stood five years ago to our current position is nothing short of remarkable. We reviewed and revised our curriculum in science, math, social studies, and middle school religion and leadership. We bolstered student support with our school-wide wellness program and increased staffing with learning specialist and counselor roles. We increased our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) staffing and worked diligently to increase our DEI education opportunities for students, families, and employees.
We extended our support to our dedicated WES employees by increasing the annual percentage raises for all employees, doubling the professional development budget, creating leadership opportunities for faculty and staff, and strengthening teacher support.
We also upgraded our campus and facilities with approximately $4.5M in campus upgrades. These included a new STEM lab, science, art, and chorus classrooms, enhanced safety and security protocols, new roofs, upgrades to our HVAC system and windows, and modernized classroom furniture.
We were able to achieve all that while managing a global pandemic because of our mission-focused 20182023 Strategic Plan that served as guideposts for our community. Thanks to the hard work of our Strategic Plan Committee over the past year, along with critical input from the community, a new path is lit for the next five years. Our 2028 Strategic Plan envisions a future that pushes the boundaries of imagination while staying steadfast to our core values and mission as a school.
I want to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional leadership of Stacie DeRemus, our board chair from 2020-2023, who championed our collective efforts in achieving these milestones. Her visionary thinking, strategic guidance, and genuine love of WES played a pivotal role in steering the board’s decisions and providing invaluable insights that propelled our community toward greater heights.
Of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without the extraordinary support of our WES community. Our community rallied together, sharing their wisdom, volunteering their time, and giving generously.

Reflecting on the generosity from the community over this last year, I’m grateful for our Parents Association executive committee, comprised of Shivani Gupta (President), Martha Orzechowski (Vice President), Katie Fioravanti (Secretary), and Gustav Hofverberg (Treasurer). They nurtured community engagement through activities and events such as the Speaker Series, Bingo Night, Faculty/ Staff Appreciation Events, potlucks, and Founders Day Picnic.
Volunteers from the WES community played pivotal roles in the success of events like the Global Fair, ServiceFest, Arts Night, and the Book Fair. They chaperoned field trips and spoke with classes about their professions, cultures, or religious traditions.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Vicki and Jay Panchal, who led the 2022-2023 Annual Fund campaign, ensuring its success. I also thank Anna and Greg Pugh, who orchestrated a memorable Prom Night Auction Gala in March—an evening of laughter, bidding, dancing, and fun. The funds from the Raise Your Paddle appeal funded “Dragon Boards” for every classroom, as well as replacement laptops for many of our faculty and staff.
So, as we launch our 2028 Strategic Plan, my heart is brimming with boundless enthusiasm. This community has consistently exceeded expectations in the past five years, and I eagerly anticipate the possibilities that the future holds.

Dear WES Community,
As I look back at the eight wonderful years that I served on the WES Board of Trustees, three of those years as the board chair, I am filled with gratitude and pride. During the 2022-2023 school year, the Board, comprised of dedicated parents, alumni, and parents of alumni, worked collaboratively with the administration on many projects. Accomplishments this year include prioritizing employee compensation and making enhancements to the physical plant so that WES’s buildings are more energy efficient.
The most notable project this year was creating a new five-year strategic plan. The Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by trustee Nicole Miller, worked for a full year, providing forums for faculty, parents, alumni, and other key stakeholders in the community to determine ambitious goals for the next five years. We are grateful to Nicole, the committee, and the community for their roles in crafting this important roadmap to a bright future. I am certain that, as Jeff Tignor takes over the role of Board Chair, WES is in a position of strength.
Without a doubt, the success of this year was due to the dedication and generosity of the WES community. We are grateful to our extraordinary faculty and staff for their creativity, passion, and care and to our Parents Association for its efforts to unite the community. We thank our Annual Giving Chairs—Jay and Vicki Panchal—whose leadership resulted in $394,170 in donations. The Auction Gala—led by Anna and Greg Pugh—had equally impressive results. The Prom Night-themed event raised close to $200,000.
None of this would be possible without the formidable leadership of our Head of School, Danny Vogelman. He works tirelessly to ensure that WES continues to provide all our students with a challenging educational experience in a joyous and supportive environment grounded in Episcopal values. With strong student enrollment and a stable financial picture, WES is wellpositioned for the future.
As I watched my son Nicholas receive his eighth-grade diploma as a WES “Lifer” in June, ready to take on the challenges of high school at Landon, I reflected on his journey at WES that began in Mrs. Harding’s Nursery class in September 2012. My husband Cornelius and I are so proud of all Nicholas has learned and accomplished as a WES Dragon and are confident he is prepared for the future. I am equally confident in the ability of WES to thrive, steered by strong leadership and the participation and generosity of the wonderful WES community.
Thank you for your support during my tenure. It has been an honor to work alongside WES faculty, staff, parents, and the extended community to advance the mission of this wonderful school. On behalf of all trustees, please accept my appreciation and gratitude for your support.

ISABELLE S. SCHUESSLER FUND FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE
In honor of Washington Episcopal School Founder Isabelle S. Schuessler, this fund was established upon her retirement in 2001. Its purpose is to provide dedicated financial resources, outside the school’s operating budget, to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching in all aspects of the school’s programs and activities. It supports continuing education for faculty, including graduate courses, professional development seminars, workshops and retreats, rewards for outstanding performance, and special projects.
STUART WORK FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID
Established in 2010, gifts to the Stuart Work Fund for Financial Aid support the WES Mission to “offer the best education possible…to a heterogeneous student body.” The investment fund’s income is dedicated to financial aid.

THE DEIGHTON ALLEYNE MEMORIAL FUND
Established in 2014 by Mrs. Dolores Alleyne and Ms. Denise Alleyne, this fund recognizes a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend who blessed the Washington Episcopal School with his presence from 1997-2014. He possessed a zest for life that was contagious and a generous heart that allowed him to share his many talents with all who had the good fortune to have known him. The income from this fund will support the education and growth of students at Washington Episcopal School for years to come.
