MISSION STATEMENT
Washington Episcopal School inspires academic and personal excellence within a joyful learning environment to develop students who are kind, confident, and prepared.
Dear WES Community,
Every year, through our Annual Report, I am able to reflect upon and appreciate the people who have supported this school with their wisdom and guidance, encouragement and inspiration, and generous financial support. They do it with love because they feel a sense of gratitude for this school and its wonderful community. And now it’s my turn to express my deepest thanks.
I am sincerely grateful to Jeff Tignor, our Board Chair, and the entire Board of Trustees for their leadership in launching our 2023-2028 Strategic Plan in the fall of 2023. Among other goals, this plan encompassed a commitment to explore a future capital campaign, enhance our facilities, and improve employee compensation. Through their perseverance and ingenuity, they have made considerable progress in achieving these essential objectives.
Our educators are continually refining their skills and enhancing our programs to better serve ourstudents, and I couldn’t be more proud. As part of our five-year curriculum review, our teachers conducted a thorough evaluation of our literacy program. After careful consideration, our division directors and a dedicated group of faculty selected and piloted a new literacy curriculum, which launched this fall.
To ensure that our academic programming has the greatest possible impact, a team of educators worked to reimagine our master schedule to better optimize how we use time throughout the school day. This important work will continue into this new school year.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our community. More than 80% of our families volunteered in some capacity—whether chairing a committee, serving hot lunch, chaperoning a field trip, or sharing cultural traditions in the classroom, the WES community has shown remarkable engagement. And this year’s philanthropic support for both the Annual Fund and our Auction Gala has been tremendous, allowing us to reinvest in our programs and continue to innovate, enriching the experience for all our Dragons.

Dear WES Community,
This past year has been one of remarkable growth for our school. Our 2023-2028 Strategic Plan is in full motion, and I am incredibly proud of the board, our educators, and the school’s leadership for their agility, creativity, and boldness in moving this school forward.
In line with our Strategic Plan, the Board of Trustees engaged a consulting firm to assess the community’s readiness for a capital campaign and brought on an architectural firm to develop a campus master plan. And, to further show our appreciation for the outstanding work of our educators, the board approved an average 5% salary increase for the 2024-2025 school year, helping to strengthen WES’s competitive position.
Another key objective of our strategic plan was to strengthen our culture of giving. Karaine Howard and Amy Samman, our dedicated Annual Fund co-chairs, and a passionate team of volunteers not only met their deadline but also surpassed the $450,000 goal well before the year's end.
Building on our culture of giving, Auction co-chairs Sharon D’Emidio, Allison Marvin, Vicki Panchal, and Sandy Vogelman, along with a creative cadre of volunteers, hosted a spectacular auction gala, Ain’t Misbehavin’: A Night of 1920s Glitz and Glam, which drew over 300 attendees. They masterfully transformed the school into a 1920s speakeasy, complete with authentic artifacts from the era, raising over $220,000. The auction’s Raise Your Paddle initiative was especially successful, funding much-needed updates to our beloved library, including a new floor plan, carpet, and furniture that students will enjoy this fall.
The Parents Association made significant strides toward our strategic plan goal of unifying our community. In addition to hosting community events, the speaker series, and educator appreciation celebrations, Shivani Gupta (President), Martha Orzechowski (Vice President), Anna Pugh (Secretary), and Laura Xanders (Treasurer), along with Grade Reps and other enthusiastic community members, introduced innovative initiatives to strengthen community bonds, enhance communication with families, and warmly welcome new members into our school family.
I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as your Board Chair and look forward to the exciting year ahead.

ISABELLE S. SCHUESSLER FUND FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE
In honor of Washington Episcopal School Founder Isabelle S. Schuessler, this fund was established upon her retirement in 2001. Its purpose is to provide dedicated financial resources, outside the school’s operating budget, to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching in all aspects of the school’s programs and activities. It supports continuing education for faculty, including graduate courses, professional development seminars, workshops and retreats, rewards for outstanding performance, and special projects. Our community is saddened by passing of Mrs. Schuessler on November 16, 2023. We are forever grateful for her visionary leadership which we are reminded of each school day.

Established in 2010, gifts to the Stuart Work Fund for Financial Aid support the WES Mission to “offer the best education possible…to a heterogeneous student body.” The investment fund’s income is dedicated to financial aid.

THE DEIGHTON ALLEYNE MEMORIAL FUND
Established in 2014 by Mrs. Dolores Alleyne and Ms. Denise Alleyne, this fund recognizes a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend who blessed the Washington Episcopal School with his presence from 1997-2014. He possessed a zest for life that was contagious and a generous heart that allowed him to share his many talents with all who had the good fortune to have known him. The income from this fund will support the education and growth of students at Washington Episcopal School for years to come.
ST. GEORGE’S SOCIETY MEMORIAL FUND
Established in 2017 to honor members of the St. George’s Society, donations to this fund are allocated to The Stuart Work Library.
