Dear WES Community,

Last year marked my tenth year as Head of School at Washington Episcopal School, a milestone that offered me a moment to pause and reflect on all we have accomplished together. I am incredibly proud of how far we have come, and of the students who fill our halls with curiosity and kindness, of the educators who bring our mission to life each day, and of the community that continues to grow stronger and more connected with every passing year. Even after a decade, I still feel the same sense of excitement and possibility that I did when I first arrived. In many ways, it feels like we are just getting started!

I am deeply grateful to Board Chair Jeff Tignor and the Board of Trustees for their steadfast leadership and partnership. Their commitment to advancing the goals of our Strategic Plan has allowed us to continue investing boldly in our people, programs, and campus. I am equally thankful for our educators, whose daily devotion to our students keeps WES joyful and forward-thinking. And to our families, alumni, grandparents, and friends, thank you for the many ways you show up for this school, whether through the Annual Fund, the Auction Gala, or the countless hours you volunteer to make WES thrive.

This was a year of momentum and innovation. We introduced HMH Into Reading® in Grades K–6, providing a cohesive, research-based literacy framework that builds strong readers and writers. In Middle School, we launched a new Grade 6 Executive Functioning course to give students practical strategies in organization, planning, and self-management. In support of ongoing professional growth, our faculty and staff came together to develop the Portrait of a WES Educator, a shared framework for goal setting that reflects what it means to be a kind, confident, and prepared educator at WES.

We also took major steps forward in sustainability and communication. More than 400 solar panels were installed across our campus over the summer, an investment expected to supply nearly 70% of the school’s electricity while modeling environmental stewardship for our students. And with the launch of our new website and school app over the summer, families can now stay connected to school life with greater ease and immediacy.

Each of these milestones represents more than operational progress; they reflect who we are as a community. We are learners and doers, innovators and stewards, grounded in our Episcopal values and united by a shared belief in the power of joyful learning.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the countless ways you make Washington Episcopal School stronger every year.

With gratitude,

Dear WES Community,

This past year was one of energy, growth, and gratitude at Washington Episcopal School. Building on the foundation of our Strategic Plan, the Board of Trustees continued to support the school’s mission, champion its educators, and strengthen the programs that make WES such an extraordinary place to learn and grow.

This year, the Board supported the administration and faculty in advancing key Strategic Plan goals. The Facilities Committee led sustainability discussions that resulted in new solar panels. The Development Committee strengthened alumni engagement, while the Investment Committee made strategic portfolio adjustments. The Trustees Committee refined evaluation processes and clarified trustee recruitment and selection to ensure strong, mission-driven governance.

Our Annual Fund, led by co-chairs Samara and Brian Jones, embodied the theme Joy in the Journey. Their leadership inspired a remarkable outpouring of generosity from our families, and the campaign surpassed its goal by more than $50,000, raising over $510,000. Their message of joy, gratitude, and shared purpose reflected the very best of our community.

The Auction Gala, chaired by Michelle Deville, brought that same sense of celebration to life. With the theme Mardi Gras| Down in New Orleans, Michelle and her talented “Krewe” of volunteers were the architects of a vibrant and joyful event, providing an authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras experience for all attendees, with no detail forgotten. The Auction grossed $369,000, including nearly $130,000 through the Raise Your Paddle for Educator Excellence initiative. Funds from this effort supported professional development, classroom innovation, teacher wellness and support, and the recruitment and retention of exceptional educators who embody the spirit of WES.

The Parents Association, led by Martha Orzechowski (President), Laura Xanders (Vice President), Anna Pugh (Secretary), and Martha Velez (Treasurer), continued to strengthen the bonds that make our community so special. Through beloved traditions, thoughtful events, and countless acts of volunteerism, the PA once again demonstrated the dedication and heart that define WES families.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my deepest thanks to our Head of School, Danny Vogelman, our outstanding faculty and staff, and every parent, grandparent, alumnus, and friend whose time, talent, and generosity sustain this incredible school. Together, we continue to build a community rooted in joy, purpose, and possibility.

It is a privilege to serve as your Board Chair, and I look forward to another year of growth and shared success.

THE DEIGHTON ALLEYNE MEMORIAL FUND

Established in 2014 by Mrs. Dolores Alleyne and Ms. Denise Alleyne, this fund recognizes a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend who blessed the Washington Episcopal School with his presence from 1997-2014. He possessed a zest for life that was contagious and a generous heart that allowed him to share his many talents with all who had the good fortune to have known him. The income from this fund will support the education and growth of students at Washington Episcopal School for years to come.

ISABELLE S. SCHUESSLER FUND FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE

In honor of Washington Episcopal School Founder Isabelle S. Schuessler, this fund was established upon her retirement in 2001. Its purpose is to provide dedicated financial resources, outside the school’s operating budget, to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching in all aspects of the school’s programs and activities. It supports continuing education for faculty, including graduate courses, professional development seminars, workshops and retreats, rewards for outstanding performance, and special projects. We are forever inspired by her visionary leadership which we are reminded of each school day.

We are extremely grateful to these family members of Isabelle Schuessler (1946-2023) for their generous contribution to this fund in remembrance of this remarkable woman.
