Dear WES Community,
Many of us expected a fast and complete return to “normal” during the 2021-2022 school year – masks off, parents back in our lovely building, and in-person events again filling our spaces as before the pandemic.
We got there, but it was not immediate or easy or linear.
I want to thank all of you–whether you are a teacher, staff member, parent, grandparent, friend, or one of our Dragons. The community showed wisdom and fortitude as we made plans, changed them with circumstances and, ultimately, protected both our health and our traditions by getting back to community at the right pace.
MISSION STATEMENT
Washington Episcopal School inspires academic and personal excellence within a joyful learning environment to develop students who are kind, confident, and prepared.
VISION STATEMENT
Washington Episcopal School students stride confidently into the world, delight in it, and contribute to it.
Study trips returned: WES students were back at the Grand Canyon and in local orchards; they investigated the Chesapeake Bay and the antiquities of Italy. Many of our parent gatherings, such as an Oktoberfest Wine Party, moved under our tent during a warm autumn. A typical day would find our indefatigable facilities team setting up and breaking down tables for outdoor lunch. But what a thrill it was, conversely, to see parents stream back into the Stuart Work Library for the Book Fair in December. Through all these advances, sometimes followed by brief retreats, our parents showed trust in our teachers and in the guidance of school leadership. And when we asked the community to support us again through the Annual Fund campaign, it produced nearly $390,000 in generous support for our operating budget.
The Under the Tuscan Sun Auction Gala was postponed from March to April when the Omicron variant asserted itself, but the parent leadership of that event and our whole community made it a complete success, with attendance at an all-time peak. The Deighton Alleyne Gymnasium was indeed transformed into a magical Italian café, and the total raised–about $200,000 after expenses–included generous “Raise Your Paddle” support for the new Exploration Playground.

Dear WES Community,
As the Chair of the Board of Trustees of our wonderful school, it has been an honor and pleasure to support the Head of School as we emerged from the pandemic. The 2021-2022 school year included the return of many traditions and routines that the community holds dear–not only big events like the Auction Gala, but also musical performances, study trips grand and local, and the December Book Fair and Admission Open House. Our community came together again, and our faculty and staff continued to be agile in a year of change. I am proud that the Board of Trustees remained steadfast in its commitment to the mission of the school.
During a year filled with optimism and excitement, our Head of School, Danny Vogelman, patiently and methodically reengaged our community through in-person events and returning our students to the experiential outings and adventures they have come to expect at WES.
The return of the much-anticipated WES Annual Auction Gala did not disappoint. There was record high attendance and, thanks to the generosity of our community, "Raise Your Paddle" participation was outstanding, raising more than $115,000 to create the new Exploration Playground next to the turf field.
The school’s primary fundraising effort, the Annual Fund, raised more than $386,000, 96% towards a lofty goal.
Thank you for your generosity and continued support of Washington Episcopal School. I am honored to lead the Board of Trustees and grateful for the indomitable leadership of Danny Vogelman. I am looking forward to all that this coming year has to offer!

ISABELLE S. SCHUESSLER FUND FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE
In honor of Washington Episcopal School Founder Isabelle S. Schuessler, this fund was established upon her retirement in 2001. Its purpose is to provide dedicated financial resources, outside the school’s operating budget, to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching in all aspects of the school’s programs and activities. It supports continuing
education for faculty, including graduate courses, professional development seminars, workshops and retreats, rewards for outstanding performance, and special projects.
STUART WORK FUND FOR FINANCIAL AID
Established in 2010, gifts to the Stuart Work Fund for Financial Aid support the WES Mission to “offer the best education possible…to a heterogeneous student body.” The investment fund’s income is dedicated to financial aid.
THE DEIGHTON ALLEYNE MEMORIAL FUND
Established in 2014 by Mrs. Dolores Alleyne and Ms. Denise Alleyne, this fund recognizes a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend who blessed the Washington Episcopal School with his presence from 1997-2014. He possessed a zest for life that was contagious and a generous heart that allowed him to share his many talents with all who had the good fortune to have known him. The income from this fund will support the education and growth of students at Washington Episcopal School for years to come.

THE EARLY CHILDHOOD FUND
Established in memory of Dawn Harding, who lovingly and creatively taught Nursery students at WES for more than two decades. Mrs. Harding, who also had the role of WES parent and grandparent, passed away on January 2, 2022. In lieu of flowers the following donors contributed to The Early Childhood Fund, established to honor her memory. Proceeds were used to enhance the experience for children using the Early Childhood playground through the addition of equipment, including musical instruments.
