Iam pleased to report that we have had another cracking season in the Coventry and District summer league. The first team, captained by Cameron Malik, took the Premier Division by storm again, winning by a clear margin of 8 points; they have topped the Premier Division since 2018. Gez McVeigh led the second team in another superb year, finishing fourth in the second division with younger players coming up through the teams into the top tier. Pete Walker’s 3rd team cemented their position in Division 1, with an excellent bronze medal in third place. The 4th team, driven forward by Jon Browning, secured promotion for the third consecutive year and will play in Division 2 next season. Our 5th team, marshalled by Adam Saumtally, secured promotion from Division 5 with a creditworthy silver medal.

Thanks must go to all of the captains for their teamwork and support. It’s been a successful summer season with lots of participation across all levels and some excellent tennis and great camaraderie; we are looking forward to start ing mens team winter practice on Tuesday 11th Oct at 7pm. Please let me know if you have not played team tennis at the boat club before and you would like to have a go.

The men’s first team had their strongest season to date in the LTA National League, finishing 2nd in the Midlands Division (Top 8 in UK) gaining qualification into the national final play-offs. Unfortunately they were unable to earn their place in the finals. The team captained by Cameron Malik included himself, Arran Trainor, Daniel Dean, Reuben Newman-Billington, Jack Smith and Ryan Stinton. The WBC men’s first team is consistently proving to be the best performing team in Warwickshire and of any outdoor venue in the UK. Arran, Jack, Cam & Reuben

In June this year Roger Federer released a video on social media inviting applicants between the ages of 12 and 16 to come to trials to be a ball kid for the Laver Cup. Ottelia applied and was invited to a 90 minute trial at the Olympic Park in London, on the weekend when numerous trials were run. At each one approximately 100 boys and girls were put through their paces, running, doing exercises, catching, throwing etc - all under the watchful eye of the assessors.

With such a large number of applicants the chance of being successful was slim so Ottelia was absolutely delighted when she received an email confirming she had been successful, one of only 12 girls and 24 ball kids. Over the next few months there were training sessions, each one back in London and 4 hours long, teaching them how to be ball kids. They all came from different backgrounds, were different ages but what they all had in common was tennis. The weekend of the actual Laver Cup was an absolutely amazing experience for Ottelia, starting with practice day on the Thursday when the big four (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray) were all on court together for the first and only time (66 Grand Slams on one court at one time!). The next three days of the actual event was hard work, long days but brilliant fun. The kids worked in teams of six and had set positions. Ottelia was a centre - responsible for running the net. Ottelia met some tennis greats including Dyokovic, Murray and Federer but her absolute favourite player was Tiafoe. She was on court for Federer’s last ever match and picked up the very last ball hit after Team World won the Laver Cup. Overall it was an amazing experience for Ottelia, inspirational and inspiring, she wishes she could do it all over again.
