OFFERING AN ABUNDANCE of natural beauty and adventure, The San Francisco Peninsula is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. From birdwatching in protected wetlands to exploring dramatic coastal cliffs, here’s how to experience the best of the Peninsula’s great outdoors.
Stroll or cycle along the San Francisco Bay Trail, a scenic path that hugs the water’s edge and offers prime views of the bay. Along the way, stop by the pier at Robert E. Woolley State Park in Burlingame for a bit of fishing. Take windsurfing lessons from Boardsports California at Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo or kiteboarding lessons from Wind Over Water at Baywinds Park in Foster City or Oyster Point Marina in South San Francisco.
The San Francisco Peninsula’s wetlands are a haven for birdwatchers. Saltwater marshes near Coyote Point and Bair Island—a 3,000-acre expanse of protected land near downtown Redwood City—are home to migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. Bair Island is part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and provides a peaceful retreat for ornithologists and nature lovers.
The tree-covered Santa Cruz Mountains form the Peninsula’s scenic backbone, offering miles of trails for hiking, mountain
biking, and horseback riding. (Woodside, Portola Valley, and areas near Half Moon Bay are especially popular for equestrian adventures.)
For a stunning redwood forest experience, take the Grabtown Gulch to Purisima Creek Loop trail in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. This 4.6-mile route winds through lush greenery, ferns, and banana slug-filled habitats along the mountain’s western slope, attracting hikers, runners, and cyclists.
Located inland from Pacifica’s coastline, San Pedro Valley Park boasts a one-mile trail that leads to Brooks Falls , where a three-tiered cascade tumbles down mossy rock walls. The hike also rewards visitors with spectacular ocean views.
For cycling enthusiasts, Bicycle Sunday is a Peninsula tradition. Every weekend, a nearly four-mile stretch of Cañada Road , along the Crystal Springs Regional Trail , is closed to cars, creating a peaceful space for biking, jogging, and roller skating. Take in sweeping views of the Crystal Springs Reservoir and surrounding forests as you ride.
With roughly 20 beaches and miles of rugged coastline, the Peninsula’s western edge is a seaside paradise. The northern coast, particularly Pacifica, is a hub for surfers. Adventure Out offers 2.5-hour surf lessons at Linda Mar State Beach (aka Pacifica State Beach), providing beginners with everything they need to catch their first wave. Meanwhile, experienced surfers take on the legendary winter swells at Mavericks in Moss Beach, where waves regularly crest at more than 25 feet (sometimes topping out at more than 60 feet!). But if you prefer to watch the water from the sand, get some negative ions at Half Moon Bay State Beach
Further south along Highway 1, you’ll find plenty of breathtaking stops and fun nature sightings. Bean Hollow State Park near Pescadero is a great place to watch harbor seals sunning themselves on the rocks. From mid-December through March, Año Nuevo State Park is home to roughly 10,000 elephant seals. The protected area offers guided walks (online reservations are required) during breeding season.
Learn how The San Francisco Peninsula protects its stunning natural landscapes.
The San Francisco Peninsula boasts thousands of acres of preserved open space spread across 450 square miles. The region’s diverse landscapes include redwood forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains, dramatic coastal cliffs and beaches along the Pacific Ocean, and wetlands lining the tranquil shores of San Francisco Bay.
“One of the things that’s special about the Peninsula is there’s so much wilderness and undeveloped coast,” says Jenny Green, marketing director at Green Foothills, a local environmental organization dedicated to protecting these lands.
The Peninsula’s commitment to conservation dates back to the 1970s, when voters established a large open-space district to protect much of the region from development. Green Foothills played a key role in these efforts and continues to advocate for land preservation today.
Much of the region’s open space is overseen by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, which manages around 65,000 acres across San Mateo and neighboring Santa Clara counties.
“One of the things that’s special about the Peninsula is there’s so much wilderness and undeveloped coast.”
—JENNY GREEN, marketing director at Green Foothills
In addition, San Mateo County Parks maintains 23 parks, supported by fundraising and volunteer initiatives from the San Mateo County Parks Foundation. These parks offer rangerled hikes, guided bike rides, and educational programs that highlight the area’s ecological and cultural history.
Land conservation efforts are further strengthened by the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), a nonprofit that acquires land from private owners to ensure its protection. POST carefully restores these landscapes before transferring them to open space agencies or other conservation groups. While these lands remain permanently protected, POST frequently arranges agreements that allow sustainable farming, grazing, and forestry to continue, ensuring a balance between preservation and responsible land use. Through these combined efforts, The San Francisco Peninsula has successfully safeguarded its wilderness so residents and visitors can continue to enjoy its parks, forests, and coastline for generations to come.

WHAT DO YOU GET when you combine the famed foodie culture of the Bay Area with some of its most prolific agricultural lands and fishing grounds? The As Fresh As It Gets (AFAIG) initiative, which connects guests to the restaurants and hotels utilizing delicious local produce and seafood from the Peninsula’s 50-plus working farms, ranches, and fishing grounds. You could soon be enjoying pureed pumpkin soup with squash harvested from Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm, steamed Dungeness crab trapped off the waters of Pillar Point and cooked dockside at Pelagic Fish Market & Grill, or even a lemon bourbon cocktail decorated with rosemary from Rocket Farms. A world of culinary adventures awaits on the Peninsula, and each sip and bite is elevated by locally sourced ingredients that really are as fresh as it gets.
Meet John Maccarra, Dungeness crab fisherman in Half Moon Bay.
Q: How did you get into fishing?
A: My father was a hardcore fisherman. Before I could walk he was taking me out on his boat, fishing on the ocean, lakes, rivers, anything—that was his love and it became mine. He passed away when I was in fifth grade and I wasn’t able to go fishing until high school, when my brother and I saved up our money to buy a boat. It’s been nonstop ever since.
Q: What is a typical day like on your crabbing boat?
A: I’ll start at around 4 a.m., go down to the boat, and start chopping up bait—mackerel and squid. We leave the dock when it’s still dark and pull the pots, take out the crabs, rebait, and then spread them out in the same place or a different area depending on the catch. We have 175 traps, so if we start at 4 a.m., we usually get home by 6 p.m.
Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?
A: Being out on a nice day with blue skies, the ocean flat calm, not much wind—it’s amazing to be out there on the ocean. The other really exciting part of crabbing is that every day is different. You pick a new area and set 50 crab pots down. The next day we pull them up for the first time, and every single pot tells a different story. It’s the pursuit of the catch.
A LOT OF ATTENTION is given to the Bay Area farm-to-table revolution; less is paid to sea-to-table, a movement that is alive and well in The San Francisco Peninsula. It all starts with a healthy fishing industry, and Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay provides just that. Protected by both inner and outer breakwaters, the harbor provides a unique safe haven to fish in the prolific Pacific waters
JOHN MACCARRA
Q: Who do you sell to?
A: I sell to a wholesaler on the end of the pier at Pillar Point, but I also sell to the general public with dock sales. We’ll get folks that come down from Sacramento for a day trip with coolers to buy direct. People are intrigued by where their seafood comes from: How did you catch it? Where did you go? How was the weather? It’s really open and social and I get a lot of repeat customers that way.
Q: How many times have you been pinched?
A: It happens a couple of times of year. It’s funny, it’s never the crab in your hand that does it, it’s the one that you’re not paying attention to—his buddy. And they’ve got strong little pinchers—it hurts, man!
off the Northern California coast. Fishermen and women work within local, state, and federal sustainability guidelines to ensure those waters remain plentiful. The result is a working harbor where more than 50 commercial and sport fishing boats operate year-round out of Pillar Point and surrounding harbors, ensuring a steady, renewable supply of black cod, Dungeness crab, king salmon, and more comes ashore.
Buy fresh seafood and fish at Pelagic Fish Market (located directly across from Pillar Point Fishing Fleet) or taste the catch of the day at the on-site grill.
That, in turn, fuels ocean-fresh offerings—from batter-fried cod at Barbara’s Fishtrap to ceviche at La Costanera —at eateries circling Half Moon Bay and beyond. And if you want to cut out the middleman, just cast a line off a fishing pier, charter a boat, or check the San Mateo County Harbor District’s Fish Line website ( fishlineapp.com), which provides an up-to-date list of just-caught seafood sold straight off the docks.
From peonies to pumpkins to grass-fed beef, the region’s fertile lands provide an abundance that can be enjoyed 12 months a year.

Meet Saif and Jordan Makableh, founders of Mazra.
BROTHERS SAIF AND JORDAN
Makableh have Jordanian roots, but it wasn’t until living in Sydney, Australia, and being exposed to the authentic Lebanese food in the Little Beirut neighborhood, that Saif had an aha moment. He fell head over heels with the flavors, so much so that it inspired a deep dive into exploring recipes on TikTok. Saif returned to California, and when his dad’s San Bruno market and deli lost its tenant, the brothers took it over, opening Mazra—Arabic for “farm.”
After a lot of trial and error, tweaks, takeout, and buzz, Mazra was voted #2 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in 2021, which resulted in a massive line and ever-growing demand. The market wasn’t zoned to be a restaurant, so the brothers opened a new location in Redwood City in April 2024 while Mazra in San Bruno (set to reopen summer 2025 as of press time) underwent upgrades.
Mazra’s trademark flavor is a kiss from the mesquite grill. You can taste it on any of the nine kebab skewer plate options (including beef kofta , octopus, lamb, and shrimp), but the grilled duck legs (confit with butter) are extra-special.
While the New Zealand lamb chops, garlic rotisserie chicken, and salmon are customer favorites, the street wrap is Saif’s pride and joy: a choice of protein served with traditional tzatziki, tomato, onions, pickles, and fries in a pillowy pita.
Saif eats at La Stanza Cucina Italiana in Menlo Park every two weeks for the fiocchetti aurora—pasta pockets filled with pear and Asiago cheese in a creamy tomato sauce. The Loma Linda Taco Truck in Daly City has his favorite pollo asado super tacos. And Taqueria San Bruno is brother Jordan’s go-to: “I’m all into the simple steak taco with just cilantro and white onion. They totally nail it.”
Check out these buzzy bites.
FIRST UP, Cardamomo in Redwood City brings a fresh take on Mediterranean flavors (think wood-fired cooking, house-made breads, and bold, spice-driven dishes), blending Spanish and Middle Eastern influences in a sleek, inviting space. Sushi Roku in Stanford Shopping Center is a recent import from Los Angeles, with punchy flavors and a chic indoor-outdoor space with natural materials. San Mateo got an offshoot of the iconic (and now-closed) Sushi Sam’s, called Sushi Edomata , thanks to the efforts of former employees.
Impasto in San Carlos brings wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza and made-from-scratch pasta. For a casual bite, Bao in Redwood City is offering Cantonese dim sum (tasty barbecue pork buns), while Korean-Chinese Paik’s Noodle in
San Carlos has authentic dishes like jajangmyeon (noodles in a rich black bean sauce).
Coastal-luxe Navio at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay has reopened after a big update, further enhancing its romantic setting and stunning ocean views. The historic The Mountain House (in Woodside’s redwoods) also received an update while offering its three-course prix-fixe menu featuring game meats.
Downtown Burlingame darling Stella moved into a gorgeous new location but still features its authentic Northern Italian menu, including house-made gnocchi and slow-braised short rib “Piemontese style”—just like nonna used to make! And Twelvemonth in Burlingame will forever change the way you think about (and eat!) plants. Turn to page 16 for more.
Meet Reena Miglani and Ajay Walia, founders of Amara, RASA, and Saffron.
Reena Miglani and Ajay Walia are known for their award-winning Indian restaurants—RASA in Burlingame (which was the first Indian restaurant in California to win a Michelin star in 2016) and Michelinrecognized Saffron in San Carlos, a Peninsula favorite since 2003—their latest opening, Amara in Belmont, diverges from their portfolio.
Amara is an homage to the couple’s love of vactioning in the Mediterranean and the region's warm hospitality.
“People on the Peninsula can lead such hurried lives,” they say. “We want to transport people, to answer the call for those longing for a slow way of life,” even if it’s just for a meal.
Three of Amara’s walls are windows, flooding the space with natural light and views of the garden. The seasonal menu from chef Brett Tullis changes slightly every week and features creative dishes like black hummus with charred onion, chili, and a hit of curry leaves; poached lobster with harissa and grape relish; and roasted lamb rack with zhoug—a spicy cilantro-laced sauce.
If that sounds good, then wait until dessert. Pastry chef Linda Ho’s creations include a baklava sundae with honeycomb ice cream. And for something to drink, the culinarydriven cocktails from consultant Jonathan Adler utilize sumac, preserved lemon, and grape leafinfused vodka.
“Pizzeria Delfina [in Burlingame] is our comfort!” says the couple. “We order all the seasonal vegetables and any soup they have. We also get the salsiccia pizza and burrata.” The duo also recommends the sausage and hot honey pizza at Vesta in Redwood City, and prefers El Grullense II on Middlefield Road in Redwood City for pollo asado tacos: “They’re small street tacos, so we always get a few!”

IT'S HARD TO BEAT THE LUNCH and dinner offerings on the Peninsula. Pazzo (San Carlos) is famed for its New Havenstyle pizza, while Vesta (Redwood City) has consistently good wood-fired pizza and meatballs. Go French at Left Bank (Menlo Park) with classics like steak tartare, moules frites, and beef bourguignon, and don’t miss beef Wellington Wednesday at Porterhouse (San Mateo). Locals are fans of Town’s (San Carlos) Philly cheesesteak spring rolls, steaks, and bread pudding.
For international comfort dishes, try lumpia at the upscale Filipino spot Avenida (San Mateo), sisig at the historic 7 Mile House (Brisbane), or Burmese pork curry with pumpkin, coconut rice, and paratha at Mingalaba Restaurant (Burlingame). If you’re in the mood for Latin-inspired flavors, order enchiladas at La Viga Seafood & Cocina Mexicana (Redwood City), pozole and chile relleno at Flores (San Mateo), and a bowl of chicken chile verde at Cantina at San Benito House (Half Moon Bay).
The region also has a reputation for
notable ramen: Taishoken (get the tokusei tsukemen), the original Santa Ramen (both in San Mateo), and Marufuku Ramen (Redwood City) are all staples. And be sure to try anything at Ox 9 Lanzhou Handpulled Noodles (San Mateo) or the godfather noodles at wonderful (Millbrae).
Get a classic cheeseburger, made with angus beef and your choice of four different cheeses, at Maverick Jack’s (Burlingame and San Mateo) or a patty melt on light rye with melted Swiss cheese and grilled onions at Jeffrey’s Hamburgers (San Mateo).
Breakwater Barbecue (El Granada) draws fans for its brisket, ribs, and sandwiches. Get a Reuben with hand-carved pastrami at The Refuge (San Carlos) or the famed grilled crab sandwich from Nick’s Seafood Restaurant (Pacifica). If seafood is top of mind, the New England-style offerings at Sam’s Chowder House will not disappoint (order from the daily fresh catch portion of the menu), nor will the tagliarini with lobster or the squid-ink risotto at Fattoria e Mare (both in Half Moon Bay).
Here’s where to start your day off right. Diners abound on the Peninsula. Order classic and hearty breakfast fare at My Breakfast House (San Carlos) or head to Backhaus (San Mateo and Burlingame) for naturally leavened bread and fresh pastries. Dive into fun riffs on breakfast and brunch plates at Apple Fritter (San Mateo) with dishes like the Naughty Burrito laced with jalapenos and the sugary-sweet Toothfairy French Toast Meal. Or, watch small planes land over brunch at the airport-adjacent Pilot Light cafe (Half Moon Bay). If you’re in the mood for something downright delightful, try a buttery, flaky croissant from the classically French-trained pastry chefs at Bonjour Bakehouse (San Mateo). For a something sweet, Sibby’s Cupcakery (San Mateo) turns out decadent cupcakes, while SWEET55 (Half Moon Bay) offers artisanal Swiss chocolates, cookies, pastries, and cakes. And to pair your baked goods (or quiche or lox on toast) with some caffeine, you can’t miss Soul Grind Coffee Roasters (Pacifica).
Three ways to celebrate the area’s eats all year long.
When local Dungeness crab season kicks off (usually in December), head to Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay to buy fresh crab off the boats, or order it at Ketch Harbor Pub, Frattoria e Mare, La Costanera, and Pelagic Fish Market & Grill. And be sure to head to Half Moon Bay Brewing Company for a craft brew and crab pairing.
For 30 years, Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant has been a treasured Half Moon Bay spot for fresh seafood (great crab cioppino), excellent pasta (the gnocchi!), pizza, and osso buco, with a fun Italian wine list.
Take a baby goat farm tour in the spring at Harley Farms goat dairy in Pescadero. Be sure to pick up some freshly made goat cheese, too.
Check the Outstanding in the Field calendar (outstandinginthefield.com) for outdoor dinners by big-name chefs at unique Peninsula locations and farms.
The Peninsula’s sublime temperate weather means alfresco dining is everywhere.
VILLAGE BAKERY (Woodside) has an outdoor seating area in the front parking lot (plus a back patio) for its popular, eclectic brunch/lunch with a slightly upscale touch. Meanwhile, Farm House (Belmont) serves eggs Benedict and corned beef hash on a dog-friendly patio.
As one of only two Bay Area restaurants to make Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in America, the minority- and woman-owned Gigi’s Cafe (Burlingame) is a local secret inside an office building, with outdoor tables overlooking a lagoon. Try the Pastrami Mami breakfast burrito, stacked sandwiches (order the Tech Bro), or any of the vegetarian options.
Quattro Restaurant at the Four Seasons Silicon Valley (East Palo Alto) offers a refined yet inviting dining experience, featuring seasonal
Italian-inspired menus that highlight fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Take your meal on the expansive patio for the perfect alfresco setting.
Izzy’s Steaks and Chops (San Carlos) and its garden patio got a big revamp, with new garden cocktails, lounge seating, and a daily happy hour. Savor agnolotti del plin and excellent wines on Donato Enoteca’s (Redwood City) pleasant front patio, or pop over to sister spot CRU Wine Bar (just a short walk away) for even more vino.
The Swingin’ Door pub (San Mateo) has a great patio for an order of fish ’n’ chips and a pint, while Gourmet Haus Staudt ’s (Redwood City) biergarten is the place to say “prost!” with a bratwurst. And for a quiet retreat, sit under the redwoods at a picnic table with the famed Reuben from Loma Mar Outpost (Loma Mar).
Visit the world-renowned Taco Bell Cantina in Pacifica for perhaps the most scenic Crunchwrap Supreme you’ll ever eat. Dine out on the back deck for oceanfront views and salty breezes.
Meet MeeSun Boice, cofounder of Hurrica Restaurant & Bar.
MEESUN BOICE , cofounder of Hurrica Restaurant & Bar, calls herself an accidental restaurateur. As a former tech sales professional and entrepreneur (Boice owned her own company at 27!), she grew tired of building businesses for others and decided to follow her love of food to hospitality. She partnered
with friend Parke Ulrich, executive chef of Waterbar and EPIC Steak in San Francisco, to open Mersea on Treasure Island. And when Mark Sanders, owner of Westpoint Harbor in Redwood City, wanted a restaurant for the harbor’s yacht club, he tapped Ulrich and Boice.
Hurrica—named in honor of Sanders’ elegant 1920s sailing yacht, the Hurrica V—takes many styling cues from the glamorous vessel, with curving wood and swanky blue chairs, plus a glowing floor-to-ceiling jellyfish tank.
Boice notes the restaurant feels like a hidden oasis or a Silicon Valley riviera on sunny afternoons, with guests enjoying cocktails and oysters on the dog-friendly and heated patio. The dining room doors slide open on warm days to

views of the marina, and the round bar is a lively spot to post up for a Maritime Martini (made with nori- and cucumber-infused gin) and onion rings topped with Wagyu beef-fat powder.
But Hurrica isn’t a seafood restaurant—it’s a modern American restaurant with a custom-built livefire hearth. Boice recommends the warm milk bread, made in-house and served with coconut butter.
Don’t miss the whole-roasted dorade , which is deboned at the table, or the slow-roasted pork chop or 40-ounce tomahawk platter, both of which come with their own accompaniments. Pro tip: Stop by Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the featured $1.99 oyster special; a portion of proceeds are donated to local charities.
“I love Korean food, and my favorite place is Seoul Kalbi Korean BBQ in San Bruno. I get the Wagyu trio platter and Korean cheese corn,” Boice says.
“I love Mazra!” she adds. “Great, fun atmosphere! I like the falafel meze sampler with hummus, baba ghanoush, tzatziki, falafel, dolma, and a little side salad—perfect to share and a nice variety of flavors.”
Eating out is a treat at these Michelin-recognized spots.
DID YOU KNOW THE PENINSULA is home to several one-star Michelin restaurants? The Village Pub in Woodside has retained one star since 2009 for its contemporary California cuisine (try its legendary duck) and deep wine list, while its chic sister restaurant, Selby’s (Atherton), has more of a continental style—and an amazing midnight chocolate cake. Petite Wakuriya is tucked in a shopping plaza in San Mateo, where the Japanese husbandand-wife team serve a traditional kaiseki (seasonal) tasting menu.
Meanwhile, Pausa Bar & Cookery (San Mateo) received a Bib Gourmand nod for its house-cured salumi and fresh focaccia, along with its outstanding Neapolitan pizzas. And for something truly original, there’s Dad’s Luncheonette. Created by a former three-star Michelin chef, this Half Moon Bay spot whips up seasonal, nonfussy gourmet fare out of a red caboose.
Michelin-recommended Madera at Rosewood Sand Hill (Menlo Park) is where everyone can all agree on the burger. Celebrate a special occasion at All Spice (San Mateo) and taste California-rustic fare at Camper (Menlo Park). Jettywave Distillery makes award-winning spirits inspired by local ingredients and the sea.
WHO KNEW that a group of friends getting together for cocktails during the pandemic would end up hatching an idea to open a craft distillery together. When Mishelle and David Westendorf and Tanya and Richard Slye found a vacant distillery space in a residential area, the first-time distillers jumped at the opportunity and opened Jettywave Distillery in Half Moon Bay. The group’s original focus was on grain-to-bottle whiskey, making it start to finish on-site with California corn and barley.
While they waited for the bourbon to age in barrel, they started making vodka, moonshine, and gin, eventually growing the lineup to more than a dozen spirits. Jettywave’s bestseller is the award-winning California Botanical Gin, which uses botanicals like juniper berries, shiso, thyme, and ginger root from Filoli in Woodside, as well as ingredients from the distillery garden. Sourcing local ingredients is just one part of the distillery’s sustainable ethos. Order The Sea Hugger, and a part of the proceeds go to support local beach cleanups.
Jettywave is located right off the California Coastal Trail and Pillar Point Harbor, so people bike, walk, and even paddle over for tastings at The Slab Bar (Friday through Sunday). Grab a seat by a firepit and enjoy a Harbormaster’s Old Fashioned from The Swell Lounge or any of the other 18 craft cocktails on the menu. And for a bite to eat with your drink, dine well on coconut and peanut chicken skewers and international curries, with freshly made curry blends courtesy of chef Jose Luis Ugalde (former chef-owner of Cafe Gibraltar). And whatever you do, don’t pass up the South African bobotie, a minced-meat curry dish.
A colorful twist on a gin and tonic, the Marine Layer cocktail is made with Jettywave’s California Botanical Gin, which uses Filoli juniper berries, ginger, thyme, lemon, and shiso.

How they fish for them and bring them off the boat. Sustainability and caring for our planet is a way of life for us as we bicycle, recycle, and upcycle every day.”

WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS A HUB FOR TECH INNOVATION, THE PENINSULA ALSO BOASTS A VIBRANT ARTS, CULTURE, AND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE. FROM HISTORIC LANDMARKS TO SCIENTIFIC SPACES, HERE ARE SOME MUST-VISIT CREATIVE SPOTS.
START WITH A VISIT to The B. Gerald Cantor Rodin Sculpture Stanford University campus. The sculpture garden is open 24/7 and includes the jaw-dropping Gates of Hell by Auguste Rodin. A true renegade, Rodin depicted humans as they are—deeply flawed and exquisitely beautiful in equal measure. More Rodin sculptures, including The Thinker, are on view in the sprawling Cantor Arts Center, along with two floors of ancient and contemporary art from around the world.
There’s more art and architecture to experience due north in Redwood City, where the San Mateo County History awaits inside an impressive 1910 building that was once the county courthouse. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and wows guests with its stainedglass dome and mosaic tile floors. Museum exhibitions unfurl a story that’s exciting, painful, and provocative. Visitors learn about the original Native American residents, the settlers who followed, and much more.
The region’s entrepreneurial success is a reminder of The San Francisco Peninsula’s influence on the world—and not just in tech. Peninsula innovators who looked to the skies are memorialized in places like Hiller Aviation Museum at the San Carlos Airport . Here, dozens of aircraft trace the history of flight and the region’s role in making air travel a reality for the masses. Flying out of San Francisco International Airport ? Don’t miss the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum . Located in the International Terminal, the library and museum is a replica of a1930s passenger lobby. Exhibits take visitors on a journey through commercial aviation.
The San Francisco Peninsula is a haven for creatives. Here’s where to see their work.
M Stark Gallery in Half Moon Bay exhibits contemporary fine art with a West Coast flair. Working primarily with Peninsula-based artists, Marianna Stark presents rotating solo exhibitions that change every six to eight weeks, and features painting, fiber art, and works on paper. Madrone Arts in Pescadero is an artist cooperative that curates group and themed shows that rotate every few months. Member artists from San Mateo County exhibit their work, ranging from painting and sculpture to ceramics and woodblock prints. And Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica highlights established and emerging California artists, along with open studios and live music.
AS PART OF THE Peninsula, the Silicon Valley is a place where the stuff of science fiction becomes reality. Mountain View’s Computer History Museum has documented the rise of tech and innovators’ journeys— from back-of-the-napkin ideas to the dawn of artificial intelligence. Set aside plenty of time for the museum’s interactive exhibits, learning lab, and live events. Who knows? It might just inspire the next big thing.
If you’re into the natural sciences, head to CuriOdyssey in San Mateo’s Coyote Point Recreation Area . A science playground and zoo, CuriOdyssey’s exhibits make science, physics, and zoology fun and accessible for everyone. This is the place where kids of all ages can touch fog drifting out of a giant bowl, watch a bobcat have a meal, and learn about an array of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. For even more scientific discovery, head to the Exploratorium . Science, art, and human perception collide in fun, family-friendly exhibits.
Discover the region’s past and Indigenous roots.
Long before the arrival of the Spanish, the Ramaytush Ohlone and its tribal groups were original inhabitants of the region. When Spaniards arrived in 1769, starving and sick after their grueling trek, the Quiroste, a group of Ohlone Indians, greeted, fed, and helped them. The Spanish later seized the region and annihilated native cultures in favor of their own. In an effort to recognize this part of history, the Peninsula offers a few ways to honor the area’s Indigenous people.
On the Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail, a monument at Sweeney Ridge marks where the Aramai tribe accompanied the European expedition travelers in search of the Montery Bay. It is said that this is where the foreigner first saw the San Francisco Bay for the first time. And at the Lamchin Interpretive Center, exhibits share the story of the Lamchin tribe, their lives, culture, and current work in the Bay Area. Travel through Filoli’s natural lands on the California Trail to access the center.
LOOKING FOR ORIGINAL live music or a cool cover band? The Fox Theatre in downtown Redwood City is sure to impress with its lively calendar and swanky vibe. Built in 1929 as a movie theater, the Fox has all the charming touches of another era. A few minutes away, Angelicas is a great spot to savor a Latin-inspired meal accompanied by live music on select special occasions. The Pacifica Center for the Arts offers an array of visual and performing arts venues and galleries, while the award-winning Hillbarn Theatre and Conservatory in Foster City wows audiences with its stage productions season after season.
Elsewhere, Pinstripes San Mateo has energy to spare. Bocce courts and bowling lanes give family and friends a place to mix and mingle over eats and drinks. If golf’s your game, then the driving range (with stunning views of the bay) at Topgolf Burlingame is for you. Further south, Stanford's Frost Amphitheater is the place for live music performances from top acts. Hanging out in a fashionable space and indulging in great food and drink is yet another form of entertainment. The Hangar in South San Francisco, with its market hall, restaurant, and bar, is an invitation to indulge in something buzzworthy and tasty.
Meet Jim Salyards, associate director of horticulture initiatives at Filoli.
IN 1994, JIM SALYARDS was studying horticulture at the University of California, Davis, wondering what to do next when someone slipped a Filoli job announcement into his school mailbox.
He interviewed, figuring if he got the job he’d stay until his “dream job” came along.
Thirty years later, Salyards is now the associate director of horticultural initiatives at the 654-acre Woodside property that features landscaped gardens, nature trails, and a historic Georgian mansion.
Salyards’ vision for Filoli has been inspired by everything from English gardens to California’s drought-tolerant landscapes. And his approach has sometimes ruffled some feathers.
After traveling to England’s Great Dixter House & Gardens, known for its biodiversity and cottage garden beds, he replaced one of the single-flower beds at Filoli with a flowy, Great Dixter-inspired array
Pulgas Water Temple. This Greek and Roman architecture-inspired monument commemorates the 1934 completion of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and water system, which provides water to 2.4 million people in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Mateo counties. It’s a picturesque spot for a picnic, photo op, or even a wedding ceremony.
of annual and perennial plants. The change from Filoli’s traditional style was controversial.
“Some people thought it looked messy,” recalls Salyards.
Luckily, new garden visitors—aka pollinators—won the naysayers over. Birds, bees, butterflies, and more flocked to the diverse new bed. Eventually, Salyards’ team replanted other singleflower beds in this annual and perennial cottage style.
ON THE CALENDAR
Scan for a complete list of events and entertainment on The San Francisco Peninsula.
His efforts are not only pollinatorfriendly but drought-tolerant, too. In 2021, Salyard transformed Filoli’s Sunken Garden with Mediterranean plants and succulents, creating a haven of drought-resistant texture and muted color. It was a hit that thrives today.
The natural world of Filoli continues to be a source of joy for Salyards. Change is constant here. Bare trees reveal moss-covered trunks in winter. Flowering cherries, lilacs, peonies, wisteria, roses, and bulbs bloom in the spring. Summer beds burst with color. And fall brings twinkling lights and holiday decor.
“Filoli is beautiful 365 days a year,” Salyards says. So beautiful that thousands of guests from around the world visit the grounds each year—and it’s in no small part to the horticulturist’s deft touch.

Dining is more than sustenance—it’s a ritual, a celebration, and a gateway to culture. At Amara in Belmont, the Mediterranean comes alive in every detail, from the signature scent of Sicilian lemon and cedarwood to frescoed walls that whisper of sundrenched coastlines. Here, food is abundant and meant to be shared— a reflection of a region where time slows and life’s simplest pleasures are savored.
In Burlingame, RASA brings the bold flavors of Southern India to center stage. Founded by chef Ajay Walia in 2014, the restaurant earned a Michelin star its first year. In 2024, RASA returned, reimagined and more ambitious than ever. From crisp dosas to spice-laden curries, RASA transforms traditional recipes with modern creativity, ensuring Southern Indian cuisine claims its place on the global dining map.
Meanwhile, Saffron in San Carlos is a celebration of Indian cuisine and is deeply rooted in hospitality. For more than 20 years, Saffron has been a place where flavors shine, traditions are honored, and guests are welcomed with warmth and care. The vibrant menu—small bites, fragrant curries, and classic thali —showcases India’s culinary richness in a bright, inviting space where every meal feels like home.
Three restaurants, three stories, one common thread: the power of food to transport, connect, and delight.
