The Rose Bowl Stadium features a statue of Jackie Robinson, former football star at UCLA and baseball Hall of Famer.
THE ROSE BOWL STADIUM debuted in 1922 and is best known for hosting the high-stakes postseason college football game that broadcaster Keith Jackson dubbed “the granddaddy of them all.” During the regular season, the UCLA Bruins play football at the 89,702-seat stadium, which has hosted five Super Bowl games, the 1994 FIFA World Cup, and 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, along with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team and (soon-to-be) three Olympic Games.
The Rose Bowl Stadium also hosts concerts from stars like Beyoncé, Oasis, and Taylor Swift. The stadium also welcomes Masters of Taste, an annual culinary tasting on the field featuring bites from local chefs. And on the second Sunday of each month, more than 2,500 vendors surround the stadium to sell wares at the famed Rose Bowl Flea Market

The Iconic Route CELEBRATES ITS CENTENNIAL 66

ROUTE 66 REPRESENTS a call to adventure and a path to potential prosperity. In 1926, the U.S. government cobbled together 2,448 miles of local, state, and federal roads, many unpaved, allowing people to drive continuously between Chicago and Santa Monica. The highway inspired interstate commerce, tourism, and development. Route 66 helped popularize and redefine regional Americana, passing through places like the Ozarks, Grand Canyon, and Pasadena.
Route 66’s path followed Colorado
Boulevard through Old Pasadena (designated in 1980) and traversed the historic Colorado Street Bridge before heading south on Figueroa Street. Over the years, realignments rerouted to nearby arteries like Arroyo Seco Parkway and Fair Oaks Avenue.
The thoroughfare has also captured imaginations through pop culture. John Steinbeck called Route 66 the “Mother Road” in The Grapes of Wrath (1939), in which readers follow the Joad family’s tumultuous Dust Bowl-era migration from Oklahoma to California. Legend has it that Lionel Sternberger created the cheeseburger at Rite Spot (now defunct) burger stand along Route 66 when he burned one side of a patty and used a slice of cheese to cover it up. John Bakewell and Arthur Brown found inspiration from Italian architect Andrea Palladio and California missions for their 170,000-square-foot domed building. Their rectangular California–Mediterranean marvel debuted in 1927 and features a tranquil central courtyard. Parks and Recreation viewers may recognize this as Pawnee City Hall.

The road has inspired TV shows, too. Running on CBS from 1960 to 1964, Route 66 features two young men traveling the highway in a Corvette, finding adventures (and danger) along the way.
When Route 66 first opened for public use, Pasadena was already a popular draw, thanks to its warm weather and iconic landmarks like Pasadena City Hall, Pasadena Playhouse, and Rose Bowl Stadium (not to mention the New Year’s Day celebrations that culiminated with a game at the sport venue).
The Valley Hunt Club sponsored the first Tournament of Roses® in 1890, promoting the
city as a winter paradise. While Midwest and East Coast residents struggled with snow, Pasadena showcased its sunny climate and blooming roses, a vision that made the region a beacon for westward migration and tourism.
To meet demand, the luxurious Castle Green resort (now condos) debuted in 1899, joining other grand properties like Hotel Wentworth (now The Langham Huntington) and Raymond Hotel.
Ultimately, Route 66 was pivotal to Pasadena’s growth and maturation. The U.S. government completed the larger, more efficient I-40 in 1984 and decertified Route 66 in 1985. Although the famed highway became a less-traveled byway, its seminal mystique remains.

Castle Green
This whimsical architectural relic, which freely mixes Moorish, Spanish, and Victorian elements, was built by Colonel Green and designed by Los Angeles architect Frederick I. Roehrig in 1898 as the annex to the popular Hotel Green. The building was converted to co-ops in 1926, and today the ground-floor rooms are a popular backdrop for sumptuous weddings and private events. Pasadena Museum of History
Celebrate the history and culture of Pasadena, from its Indigenous origins to its Spanish influences to the present day. The quartet of buildings includes the Fényes Mansion, an example of the estates that earned Orange Grove Boulevard the nickname Millionaire’s Row; and the Finnish Folk Art Museum, a nod to Y.A. The Huntington
The sparkling jewel in Pasadena’s crown, this Georgian estate of railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington and his wife Arabella (including their extensive art collection) was opened to the public in 1928. For well over a century, the California Institute of Technology has been a global leader in scientific exploration. Attracting many of the world’s brightest minds, Caltech, as it’s familiarly known, addresses fundamental scientific questions and pressing social challenges. The science and engineering school’s faculty and alumni, which include Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer, have been awarded 48 Nobel Prizes. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Caltech researchers founded the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 1936 with the mission of exploring the solar system and developing new technologies, like the Mars Rover, to facilitate the search for new worlds and improve life on Earth. The campus houses the Space Flight Operations Facility, a control room that has monitored and controlled space exploration for NASA and other international space agencies since 1963.
