Before wine took center stage, Napa Valley drew visitors with its hot springs, fresh air, and promise of renewal.
Long before it was world-renowned for wine, Napa Valley made a name for itself as a healing destination. Resorts first emerged in Calistoga, touting the curative powers of mineral-rich hot springs, fresh country air, and serene landscapes, giving rise to a booming wellness economy that shaped the region’s early identity and provided vital livelihoods for local communities.
In the 19th century, newspapers and advertising helped fuel a global fascination with the restorative powers of mineral hot springs, volcanic mud baths, and naturally carbonated waters. Gold Rush-era entrepreneurs like Samuel Brannan seized the opportunity, promoting the region as a haven for health and relaxation.
Beginning in the 1840s, Napa Valley became a sought-after destination for its healing hot springs and mineral waters, further boosted by Brannan establishing Calistoga’s railroad terminal in the 1860s. By the early 20th century, more than 240 resorts and hotels dotted the Mayacamas and Vaca foothills, drawing visitors from California and beyond. These resorts catered to a wide range of guests—from San Francisco elites and military personnel to health seekers and advocates of the Temperance Movement.
Early tourism in Napa Valley was as much about leisure and entertainment as it was about healing. Resort life o ered a full itinerary of diversions. Guests spent their days enjoying lawn tennis and croquet, hiking well-groomed trails, and relaxing by swimming pools or soaking in hot springs.

Larger resorts boasted billiards, card games, libraries, and even bowling. Outdoor pursuits like boating, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing made the most of Napa Valley’s natural beauty, while evening dances, musicals, and plays kept the social scene lively well into the night.
More than 170 years later, Napa Valley’s allure as a destination for living well remains a beacon. While the definition of “wellness” has evolved, the industry continues to thrive and o ers immersive experiences that blend spa culture with culinary excellence, fine wine, and Napa Valley’s pastoral charms. The region’s 21st century hospitality story is one of refinement and reinvention. Michelin stars shine brightly, new luxury resorts welcome guests, public art abounds, new trails connect communities, and sustainability is a shared commitment across the board.

“People come to Napa Valley to experience joy—the very same thing was happening in the 19th century.
”
Christine Madrid French, Executive Director of Napa County Landmarks

Napa County is home to nearly 100 properties and districts recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, including several National Historic Landmarks. From 19th-century Victorian homes and charming downtown districts to pioneering wineries and agricultural sites, these landmarks tell the story of Napa Valley’s rich and varied heritage. Exploring these sites offers visitors a chance to connect with the region’s past—a tapestry woven from its early ranching days, architectural gems, and the rise of its iconic wine culture.

The chapters and people that shaped the Napa Valley of today
The Patwin, Coast Miwok, and Wappo tribes were the first to call Napa Valley home, living near rivers, hunting big game and fish, and gathering grasses, acorns, and berries.
In the early 1800s, Spanish and Mexican explorers introduced new ways of living off the land, including grape cultivation and cattle ranching. Pioneer George C. Yount, the first “Americano” to receive a Mexican land grant, planted Napa Valley’s first grapevines at Rancho Caymus in 1839.
Nathan Coombs founded the town of Napa in 1847, recognizing its promise as a trade hub at the confluence of the Napa River and Napa Creek. The Gold Rush and local silver mines lured fortune seekers, while the 1869 opening of Sawyer Tannery earned acclaim for Napa leather.
Samuel Brannan, California’s first millionaire, helped establish Calistoga as a healing destination with the opening of Hot Springs Hotel in 1862, and connecting the region to San Francisco by rail.
Charles Krug founded Napa Valley’s first commercial winery in 1861, and in 1886, Josephine Tychson became one of California’s first female vintners.
PROHIBITION PIVOT
Prohibition halted wine production (1920-1933), shifting the agricultural focus to cattle ranching. During World War II, Mexican braceros became vital to agriculture and winemaking— a legacy that continues today.
The 1966 founding of Robert Mondavi Winery set new winemaking standards. In 1976, Napa Valley shocked the world at the Judgement of Paris blind tasting, with Chateau Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars triumphing over French wines—2026 marks the 50th anniversary of that major milestone.
The 1970s sparked a culinary renaissance, with Domaine Chandon pairing fine dining with wine. The French Laundry opened in 1978 and reached global acclaim under Chef Thomas Keller, who took ownership in 1994.
SETTING A NEW STAGE
BottleRock Napa Valley music festival debuted in 2013, making the region a place where the next generation comes to play.
From trailblazing wineries to iconic landmarks and one-of-a-kind attractions, these Napa Valley originals o er a glimpse back in time.

The oldest house and surviving structure in Napa, the Cayetano Juárez Adobe was built in 1845 as a family home. It was later converted into a restaurant and bar; today it is home to La Cheve Bakery and Brews

Greystone Cellars, home to The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, was constructed in 1889, and served as home of Christian Brothers Winery from the 1930s to 1989.
The historic Hatt Building, part of the Napa Mill complex in downtown Napa, houses the Napa River Inn—a hotel located within a restored 19th-century warehouse that once played a vital role in the city’s trade. The site’s gardens were designed by Master Gardener L. Diane Row.
Farming has always been the backbone of Napa Valley, from its early agricultural roots to today’s world-renowned vineyards that continue to sustain the region’s way of life.

Before Napa Valley became synonymous with wine, its fertile land and mild climate supported a remarkable diversity of agriculture. Sheltered by volcanic mountain ridges and blessed with rich and diverse soils, the region produced everything from grains and fruits to nuts and livestock. The valley’s unique position—cooler than inland California yet sunnier than fog-socked San Francisco—created ideal conditions for farming.
See page 75 to read about Napa Valley’s winemaking history.

Local farmers experimented

roamed and wheat fields thrived. After becoming part of the United States, those ranchos gave way to smaller farms and vineyards. Local farmers experimented widely, from cultivating hops and raisins to trying their hand at tea and silk production. Even rice was grown in the lowlands of St. Helena.
In the 1800s, Napa Valley’s agricultural landscape evolved alongside its changing political identity. Under Mexican rule, vast ranchos lined the Napa River, where cattle, sheep, and horses
By the late 19th century, Napa County had earned a reputation as an agricultural powerhouse. It ranked among California’s top wheat producers and boasted flourishing orchards. At their peak, local farms supported hundreds of thousands of fruit and nut trees, with prunes— particularly French prunes introduced in 1871—becoming a defining crop alongside the valley’s growing vineyards.

GOODMAN LIBRARY
Napa County Historical Society has called the 1901 Goodman Library in downtown Napa home since the 1970s. In addition to serving as a vital research hub, the Society presents rotating exhibits exploring topics tied to the valley’s rich history and hosts engaging lectures. Its Crafted Napa Valley gift shop showcases goods locally made within a 50-mile radius. The museum is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday and hosts historic walking tours.

For 50 years, Napa Valley Grapegrowers has championed sustainable viticulture and the preservation of Napa Valley’s agricultural heritage, balancing tradition and innovation to protect the land and ensure the future of the valley’s world-class vineyards.

A deep respect for the land and a bold commitment to sustainability guide Napa Valley’s path toward a flourishing future.

The landmark policy sparked a wave of forward-thinking land-use protections that continue to safeguard the valley’s rural character. Today, more than 38,000 acres of the Agricultural Preserve are shielded from urban development.

Napa Valley wines are legendary for good reason. From complex Cabernet Sauvignons and rich Chardonnays to bright Sauvignon Blancs and lush Pinot Noirs, every bottle tells a story of terroir, artistry, and passion. There’s nothing like tasting at the source and meeting the talented individuals who pour their hearts and souls into the winemaking craft. With more than 400 wineries and 100 tasting rooms open to the public and countless immersive touring and tasting experiences, every Napa Valley journey presents an opportunity to discover new favorites, deepen your knowledge, and captivate your palate. Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned connoisseur, visiting for the first time or returning like a regular, this is your essential guide to all things wine in Napa Valley.

The key players and moments that shaped Napa Valley’s winemaking legacy
Napa Valley’s world-renowned wine culture didn’t spring up overnight—it was built, bottle by bottle, by a group of determined visionaries whose stories live on today. These pioneers and those who followed in their footsteps helped create a culture, a destination, and a legacy that continues to inspire winemakers and travelers alike.
It began with Charles Krug, who laid the foundation for Napa Valley’s wine scene in 1861. By 1882, he had opened the valley’s first public tasting room, welcoming curious guests to experience wine not just as a product, but as a place. That spirit of hospitality still runs strong, and Charles Krug Winery remains a cornerstone of the region.
Around the same time, German immigrant Jacob Schram carved his dream into the side of Diamond Mountain. He planted 100 acres and built Napa Valley’s first hillside wine caves at Schramsberg Vineyards. A century later, Jack and Jamie Davies revived the estate to focus on world-class sparkling wines. Today, their son Hugh builds upon that legacy.
In St. Helena, Louis M. Martini weathered Prohibition by making
sacramental wine. When the ban was lifted in 1933, he wasted no time founding his namesake winery and helped establish the Napa Valley Vintners Association in 1944.
The modern Napa Valley wine story took o in 1966 with Robert Mondavi, whose Oakville winery introduced the world to the region’s potential. The original property is set to reopen in 2026 after a multi-year remodel; you can also sample Robert Mondavi Winery vintages at the stately Arch & Tower tasting room in downtown Napa, overlooking the river.
A seismic shift came in 1976 with the Judgment of Paris. Warren Winiarski, founder of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, shocked the wine world when his 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon beat top Bordeaux wines in a blind tasting. In that same competition, Chateau Montelena—owned by Jim Barrett and represented by winemaker Milenko “Mike” Grgich—won for its 1973 Chardonnay. The victories put Napa Valley on the global map. Fresh o that triumph, Grgich opened Grgich Hills Estate in 1977, which remains a popular destination for wine tasting.
More than a dozen o cially-designated grape growing regions capture the essence of place and lend to winemaking artistry.

California’s first designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), Napa Valley is now home to 17 distinct winegrowing regions— each with its own climate, soil, and personality that shape the character of its wines. Every AVA tells a di erent story, revealing a rich tapestry of passion, heritage, and the enduring harmony between earth and vine.
The Los Carneros AVA is renowned for its cool climate, creating Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that dance on the palate with elegance and brightness. Howell Mountain AVA is nestled at elevations above 1,400 feet and produces bold wines. Here, grapes endure warmer temperatures and longer sun exposure, resulting in rich, luscious reds. The vines of Mount Veeder AVA challenge gravity, clinging to rocky soils and absorbing sunlight that adds complexity to Chardonnays and Bordeaux blends.
On the valley floor, you’ll find another collection of stories. In AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, and Oakville, the gentle slopes and fertile soils create wines that present a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and refinement. The new Crystal Springs AVA highlights a unique stretch of hillside terrain in the northern part of the valley known for its cooler temperatures and volcanic soils. This emerging appellation produces elegant, structured wines that reflect its distinct microclimate and elevation.
Viticulture is a complex blend of art, science, and farming.
1. Winter pruning
After harvest, vineyard workers trim vines to grow a certain way, in accordance with the winemaker’s preference.
2. Bud break and flowering
In the spring time, the first buds emerge. After a month, tight bunches of flowers dot the vines; each can form a grape berry.
3. Fruit set
The now-pollinated flowers drop their petals, and a tiny green grape emerges at the end of each stem. Bunches take shape and the fruit ripens, thanks to the remarkable climate.
4. Canopy management and crop thinning
Leaf removal and shoot thinning helps to ensure shade, sunlight, and air flow for grape clusters before crop thinning— the “green harvesting” of unripe or imperfect fruit.
5. Veraison
All grapes begin green, but, as harvest approaches, they ripen and reveal varietal characteristics through color changes.
6. Harvest
After grapes have been tasted and tested for sugar levels (“brix”), it’s time to harvest. Usually, grapes are hand-picked at night or early morning when cooler temperatures help retain structure and inhibit early fermentation.
7. Crush
Harvested grapes are sorted, destemmed or pressed (red fruit is often not pressed until after fermentation), and not all grapes are destemmed before being sent to a fermentation vessel.
8. Fermentation
Yeast is often added to initiate the fermentation process. When fermentation is
complete, the wine is transferred to a barrel, cement egg, amphora, or stainless steel tank to age and develop.
9. Aging
A variety of receptacles are used to impart character that will develop over time.
Everything from stainless steel tanks to American, French, or Hungarian oak barrels are used to properly develop the wine profile.
10. Bottling
When wine has aged to the winemaker’s preferences, it’s time to bottle. Once in the bottle, wine may be allowed to age for a few months or many years.

-Philippe Melka

Get to know some of the most interesting people shaping Napa Valley’s contemporary winemaking culture.
Dalia and Amelia Ceja Ceja Vineyards is the American dream realized. Founded in 1999 by Amelia, Pedro, Armando, and Martha Ceja, the family’s journey began decades earlier, when patriarch Pablo Ceja migrated from Mexico in the 1950s to work the vineyards. Growing up, his children gained hands-on knowledge that helped them transition from laborers to landowners. The Cejas purchased land in Carneros, planted their first vines in the 1980s, and launched their own label, becoming one of the region’s first Mexican-American family-owned wineries.
Today, Ceja Vineyards crafts award-winning wines from sustainably farmed estate vineyards, focusing on varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot. From the vineyard to the tasting table, it’s truly a family affair. Amelia and Pedro’s daughter Dalia also joined the family business, taking the helm of the marketing. “In one generation, my family has gone from immigrant vineyard workers to grape growers and winery owners,” she shares.

Cathy Corison
A Napa Valley pioneer with grace and grit, Cathy Corison arrived in Napa Valley in June 1975, just two days after graduating college with a biology degree. She was determined to try her hand at winemaking as the Napa Valley was beginning its own exciting transformation. “There were only about 30 wineries here then,” she says of what became her unique front-row seat to the valley’s evolution—which she became a part of when there were very few female winemakers.
After earning her enology degree from UC Davis, Cathy spent the 1980s making wine for others, including Chappellet. In 1987, she bottled her first vintage under her own label, Corison Winery: a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rutherford Bench, a site she was drawn to for its potential to produce powerful and elegant wines. She continued to help other wineries grow until it was time to go all in with her own business.
Nearly four decades later, Corison Winery remains a small, family-run operation. Cathy grows the grapes,
makes the wine, and works the cellar alongside her daughter Grace, now the assistant winemaker. Her elder daughter Rose always returns home to help with harvest. Cathy credits her husband, William Martin, for being a general jack-of-all-trades, between finding their original estate property, negotiating the purchase of their second vineyard, and designing their barn and sustainable winery facility.
“I’ve been farming organically for 29 years because it was the right thing to do,” Corison says. Today, the winery is certified organic, Napa Green, and solar-powered. “At the end of the day, we are farmers,” she adds with a smile.
Julien Fayard
Julien Fayard’s journey to Napa Valley began by chance when a friend invited him to California. That trip landed him at Quintessa for harvest, where his eyes were opened to Napa Valley’s potential. What began as a temporary adventure evolved into a permanent home. He started layering projects—working with Philippe Melka, then launching brands like Nicholson Jones and Covert Estate. Now a prolific winemaker, Julien thrives on complexity and collaboration, crediting the people and opportunities he found along the way for shaping his path in Napa Valley and beyond.

He opened his downtown Napa tasting room, Maison Fayard, to break down the barriers he saw growing in Napa Valley’s wine scene. As a counter to the appointment-only model, Julien wanted to create something simpler— more like a European walk-in wine shop, where customers come in to buy wine and taste casually along the way.
He also curates a selection of quality wine wares, o ering everything from $6 corkscrews to fancy $300 ones. The goal was to cater to both budget-conscious shoppers and serious collectors when it comes to both the wine and all of the accessories that enhance the ritual. “I’m getting more passionate about the art of living and drinking and enjoying,” he enthused. And Maison Fayard is the perfect place to share that joie de vivre with everyone.

“I’ve been farming organically for 29 years because it was the right thing to do…at the end of the day, we are farmers.

-Cathy Corison
Philippe Melka
Philippe Melka of Melka Estates is one of Napa Valley’s most respected winemakers. Educated in Bordeaux with degrees in geology and enology, Philippe joined the Moueix team at Dominus Estate in Yountville early in his career. It was there that Philippe realized this small valley contained an incredible range of soil types and microclimates— the interplay of elevation, slope, and sun exposure across Napa Valley’s patchwork terrain revealed a diversity that echoed the great terroirs of Europe.
Along with his wife Cherie, Philippe dedicated himself to exploring the valley’s full potential, crafting siteexpressive wines that have shaped the region’s global reputation for excellence. In addition to their labels Métisse and CJ, he is a consulting winemaker on dozens of premium wines and projects

such as revitalizing the historic Spring Mountain Vineyard.
According to Philippe, “Napa Valley is an international culture where a lot of di erent winemaking currents play an important role.”
Siblings Deneen, David, and Coral Brown harnessed the potential of their parents’ land to build a successful family business.

In a region known for storied wine dynasties, the Brown family’s journey is both classic and singular. It began when their parents—immigrants from Panama and Jamaica who had a successful medical business in Los Angeles—purchased a rundown homestead in Napa Valley in 1980. They had no background in wine, but as their children recall, they planted the seeds for something far beyond grapes, drawing upon their own childhoods growing up in places where agriculture was part of their everyday life.
“In some respects, our story is a classic, old-school Napa Valley wine family story,” says Deneen Brown. “What stands out about our story is that Mom and Dad were from Panama and Jamaica. They developed the property, which involved rehabilitating and modernizing a dilapidated homestead, and they planted vineyards where none existed previously.”
The land itself carries deep historical resonance. “The original inhabitants of the land now known as Brown Estate were the Onasatis people, dubbed Wappo. There’s a vortex of quietude at the heart of the property that feels like a direct connection to those who first lived here,” says Coral Brown. “We strive to honor their legacy by taking a holistic approach to everything we do, from forest management to farming to winemaking to hospitality.”
Initially, winemaking wasn’t part of the plan. “Our parents weren’t thinking about wine,” says David Brown. “But eventually, they understood that vineyards were the thing, because that was what one did here.”
The idea to bottle their own wine crystallized unexpectedly. “One of the producers who was buying our fruit was holding it aside for a special bottling for

the White House,” says Deneen. “David sped back to the ranch, filled me in, and the die was cast.”
The siblings brought complementary strengths to the table, drawing on a shared upbringing shaped by their parents’ work in healthcare. “The overarching ethos of taking care became our guiding principle,” Coral says. That mindset still guides every aspect of Brown Estate.
From humble beginnings, the Brown siblings built a brand rooted in authenticity and patience. “When you build a wine brand on the estate model, you can’t be in a hurry,” says Deneen. “David once

said, ‘If there’s one thing this business demands of us, it’s time.’”
Now entering its 30th year, Brown Estate remains 100% family-owned with three physical locations and a growing national footprint. Its newer sister label, House of Brown, o ers sustainable, vegan-friendly wines at accessible price points. As for what Deneen is most proud of? “The strength of our company and brand cultures, and the fact that our Brown Downtown tasting room helped change the face of wine tourism in Napa.”
Robert Mondavi Wines’ Director of Winemaking Kurtis Ogasawara carries the pioneering Napa Valley vintners’ legacy into the future.
Wine was barely on Kurtis Ogasawara’s radar growing up in Sunnyvale, California. Focused on wrestling, he pursued a Division I athletic path, which led him to UC Davis. He started out studying mechanical engineering until he stumbled into an introductory winemaking class that opened his world.
He switched majors to viticulture and enology and began working harvest internships at Mumm Napa, where he fell in love with the collaborative, celebratory spirit of the wine industry. Early roles at Domaine Chandon and Newton Vineyard sharpened his skills, and in 2015, he joined the team at Robert Mondavi Winery, where he was promoted to director of winemaking in 2023.

with purpose. “We’re always asking: How do we make the best wines possible? How do we show o the personality of the sites we work with? And how can we create wines that tell a story worth sharing?”

“Everyone on the winery team understands and realizes that we work for one of the most important wineries in the world, and we don’t take that lightly,” Ogasawara says of representing one of California’s most legendary wine brands.
Ogasawara’s role bridges every part of the process, from vineyards to hospitality to the cellar, bringing together a collaborative culture focused on crafting expressive wines
He draws inspiration from the legacy of innovation that defined the winery’s founder. “The spirit of Robert Mondavi is that he was an innovator,” he says. “So we always make sure we’re at the forefront of winemaking.” Whether it’s testing new canopy techniques in the vineyard or integrating the latest technology, the goal remains the same: to craft great wines and keep improving. “Your wine is never going to be perfect,” Ogasawara adds. “And that’s what I love about it—you’re always pushing.”
forefront of winemaking.”

keep improving. “Your wine is never going to be perfect,”

He’s also inspired by Napa Valley’s incredible diversity, not just in terroir, but in the wines themselves. “It’s really easy for people to say, ‘Oh, I’ve had a Napa Cab,’ but you can get thousands of di erent Cabernets that have their own personality and distinct character,” he says. For Ogasawara, it’s also personal—many of his UC Davis classmates are now winemakers across the region, and he enjoys seeing their styles emerge in their wines.
“I want to make sure that what I see here in Napa exists—or is better—for future generations.

Key thinking-ahead steps for a smooth day in wine country.
l Do Your Research
Secure bookings at any wineries that require reservations.
l Map it Out Group your tastings geographically and plan your route in advance to allow enough time to get around.
l Dress for Success No matter the season, wine tasting rooms are temperature controlled. Bring a layer and wear sensible shoes for uneven paths and unpaved areas. (See page 156 for wardrobe packing tips.)
l Fuel Up and Hydrate Don’t taste on an empty stomach and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
l Give Gratuities
Tip your tasting ambassadors and wine attendants.

Follow these simple rules to master the art of winetasting.
FRAGRANCE-FREE, ALWAYS Avoid wearing perfume or cologne. Nearly 80% of taste is informed by smell, so any added scent—yours or someone else’s—can cloud the nuances in the glass.
HYDRATE INTELLIGENTLY Drinking water immediately before tasting can disrupt your mouth’s pH balance, leading the wine to appear overly acidic or flat. A better approach: hydrate consistently throughout the day, but give your palate a moment to recalibrate before the first sip.
ENGAGE THE NOSE FULLY Aromatics are layered, and discovering them requires more than a cursory sniff. Bring the glass to your face until the bridge of your nose meets the rim. Move slowly—side to side, up and down.
THREE SIPS TO UNDERSTAND The first sip prepares your palate. The second reveals the wine’s character. The third affirms your impression.
SPITTING IS DISCIPLINED, NOT DISMISSIVE There’s no obligation to finish every pour. Spitting is a practical and entirely acceptable part of tasting.
Wine pairings go far beyond cheese—think trains, trails, tuk-tuks, and so much more.

Transportation becomes part of the adventure with these immersive tasting tours.

A feast for the senses, Napa Valley shines as a global beacon of culinary excellence.

In Napa Valley, cuisine is more than a complement to world-class wine—it’s a cultural cornerstone. Rooted in the region’s rich agricultural heritage and shaped by global sensibilities, the valley’s culinary landscape is a refined celebration of flavor, seasonality, and terroir. From Michelin-starred tasting menus to wood-fired tacos served curbside, Napa o ers an exciting breadth of gastronomic experiences. At every level, there’s an unmistakable commitment to craft. Menus are guided by what’s ripe, local, and sustainably sourced—from heirloom vegetables and grassfed meats to artisan cheeses and foraged herbs. Expect innovation without pretension, hospitality with soul, and a continual reimagining of what California cuisine can be. Whether you’re savoring a leisurely brunch in a sunlit courtyard or indulging in a nine-course odyssey at a vineyard estate, every bite deepens your connection to this extraordinary region.

Napa Valley’s culinary scene begins long before the fork meets the plate—it begins in the loamy soil of its sun-soaked vineyards and farms. Rooted in old-world agricultural traditions and protected by America’s first designated Agricultural Preserve, the region’s true distinction lies in the quality and character of its raw ingredients.
Experience this connection to the land firsthand at local farmers’ markets throughout the valley, where seasonal bounty is on full display and you’ll have
the chance to meet the farmers, foragers, and makers who help power the region’s food culture. Downtown Napa and Calistoga have markets every Saturday year-round and Yountville’s weekly market is held Sundays. Several other seasonal farmers’ markets take place in warmer months valley-wide.
Hudson Greens & Goods is a gourmet grocery stand inside Napa’s Oxbow Public Market, where you can shop for local produce, olive oils, meats, eggs, and preserves every day of the week. Its

namesake, Hudson Ranch, supplies the area’s top restaurants with ethically raised livestock and impeccable produce.
Long Meadow Ranch—a regular presence at area farmers’ markets— o ers a 90-minute Culinary Farm Tour & Tasting on the first Friday of every month. Reservations are required to take the hands-on tour through the farm and vineyard, where you’ll explore culinary gardening techniques, learn how pollinator insectaries are managed, and sample freshly harvested produce, raw honey, and estate-grown organic olive oils.

in decades. Through careful cultivation and partnerships with small farms in California and Mexico, he brought these nutrient-rich, flavor-packed beans back to life, restoring biodiversity to the dinner table and introducing a new generation of chefs and home cooks to their unique textures and tastes.
Napa also lays claim to originating the boysenberry fruit. In the 1920s, a Napabased farmer and horticulturist named Rudolph Boysen began crossbreeding various berries in his backyard, hoping to create a new variety that would capture the vibrant flavor and juiciness of its ancestors. By blending the genes of raspberries, blackberries, American dewberries, and loganberries, he cultivated a unique hybrid—deep purple, richly sweet, and unlike anything else growing in California soil at the time.

Meet the new wave of Keller-trained chefs.
In Napa Valley, the legacy of Chef Thomas Keller extends far beyond the storied walls of The French Laundry.
Many of the region’s rising culinary stars got their start in Keller’s kitchens around the valley—absorbing his attention to detail, reverence for ingredients, and uncompromising standards—before branching out to make their own mark on the area’s evolving dining scene.
After earning her stripes in the famously disciplined The French Laundry kitchen, Filipino-American chef Jade Cunningham opened Carabao. Her bold addition to Napa Valley’s restaurant landscape o ers elevated takes on Filipino classics, from tender braised oxtail kare-kare croquettes to inventive halo-halo desserts layered with texture and flavor. It’s a deeply personal expression of her culinary heritage, executed with the technical finesse she developed under Keller’s mentorship. Then there’s Stateline Road Smokehouse, where Darryl Bell merges Michelin precision with Kansas City soul. After stints at Bouchon Bistro and PRESS Restaurant, he returned to his barbecue roots, opening Napa’s first true smokehouse in a converted auto garage in the Rail Arts District With a menu that includes slow-smoked brisket, ribs, and inventive grain bowls, Bell’s restaurant has quickly become a local favorite and earned a James Beard Award nomination.
The Culinary Institute of America plays an instrumental role shaping Napa Valley’s culinary identity.
Before Napa Valley became synonymous with destination dining, a quiet transformation was underway in a historic stone building nestled among St. Helena’s vineyards. In 1995, the Culinary Institute of America—already revered for its flagship campus in Hyde Park, New York—opened the doors to its new West Coast home at the former Christian Brothers winery, now known simply as Greystone. Originally conceived as a hub for professional development, the Greystone campus offered immersive one- to five-day courses taught by the world’s culinary elite. From Wolfgang Puck to Alice Waters, the roster read like a who’s who of modern gastronomy. Chefs, pastry experts, and sommeliers would come from around the globe to learn from their culinary heroes in an environment that was both intensive and inspiring. As CIA‘s California Managing Director Adam Busby recalls, “It was really chef-driven…you could open the catalog and say, ‘I want to take this class with Alice Waters.’”
That model eventually evolved. What began as short-form continuing education transitioned to formal certificate and associate degree programs, training the next generation of culinary talent in the heart of Napa Valley. Today, students come to CIA at Greystone to pursue focused tracks in either Culinary Arts or Baking and Pastry, immersing themselves in rigorous, handson instruction rooted in the region’s rich agricultural and gastronomic culture.
As the Culinary Institute of America’s Greystone campus in St. Helena grew

increasingly busy, the need for expansion became clear. The solution came in the form of another property in downtown Napa, known as CIA at Copia, which allowed the school to split its focus and better serve both students and the public.
Today, CIA at Copia is the CIA’s hub for public-facing programming: culinary demos, hands-on cooking and baking classes, wine and beverage education, and curated events for home cooks and food lovers. “We bifurcated the business,” explains Busby. “Now Napa is essentially focused on public programming, and St. Helena is focused on degree programming.” Visitors to Copia can explore the Chuck Williams Culinary Arts Museum, shop for high-end kitchenware and local artisan products at the Marketplace, sip one of 20 rotating wines by the glass at the wine bar, and enjoy wine country cuisine at The Grove Restaurant.
Meanwhile, students pursuing associate degrees remain based at Greystone, where training culminates in a hands-on capstone semester running Gatehouse Restaurant
and the student bake shop. “It’s one of the most reasonably priced experiences in the Napa Valley,” Busby notes. “A four-course prix-fixe dinner runs about $65 to $75, and it’s entirely student-run—from the front of house to the kitchen.”
CIA is deeply integrated with the region’s hospitality community through its externship program. Halfway through their associate degrees, students are required to spend 15 weeks working full-time in real-world culinary environments. From Michelinstarred restaurants and luxury resorts to artisan bakeries and chocolate shops, these externships often take place in the heart of the valley.
“We drive a little bit of the temporary labor in the local restaurant scene up and down the valley,” explains Busby. This hands-on training not only strengthens students’ skills—it also creates a talent pipeline for the region. Many local employers go on to hire their externs permanently, and in some cases, they rise to the very top. As Busby notes, “The head chef of The French Laundry right now is one of our graduates.”

To truly appreciate why Napa Valley is considered a world-class culinary destination, one must experience its restaurants firsthand—from legendary institutions that helped define wine country cuisine to the next generation of chefs bringing fresh perspectives and global influences to the table.

Kid Favorite: Ringing the bike bell along the trail.

Kid Favorite: Spotting birds along the way.
Back to Reality: After your paddle, change and check out. On the way home, the kids might ask: “Can we come back next year?”

tions that o er more than just a standard room. Cottages, suites, and resorts with outdoor space to roam, kid-friendly amenities, and quieter surroundings are ideal for multigenerational families.
4 Keep snacks handy. While Napa Valley has plenty of gourmet bites, not all of them cater to young palates. Stock up on snacks at one of the many markets or local grocery stores to keep hunger-related meltdowns at bay.

2 Mix it up. Alternate between grown-up stops (like a scenic drive or wine tasting) and kid-approved attractions like the Old Faithful Geyser, Connolly Ranch, or Crane Park. It keeps everyone in the family engaged.
3 Stay somewhere with space. Look for accommoda-
5 Embrace nature. Napa’s parks, rivers, and trails are like playgrounds. Places like American Canyon Wetlands and Yountville Park are popular open spaces where kids can move, explore, and recharge between activities.

Makers, writers, filmmakers, and artists throughout history have found inspiration in Napa Valley.

A contemporary destination for thoughtfully curated exhibitions, cutting-edge art, and culinary excellence
The recent opening of The MAC (Napa Valley Museum of Art & Culture) in St. Helena marks a major milestone for the region’s creative landscape—and a transformative expansion for the long-standing Napa Valley Museum, which has served the community for over 50 years from its Yountville campus.
“This space allows us to dream bigger,” says Laura Rafaty, Executive Director of the Napa Valley Museum. “We’ve always wanted to create more ambitious exhibitions and reach broader audiences, but our Yountville location, while beloved, is tucked away and limited in scale.” That changed with the acquisition of the former Dean & DeLuca building on Highway 29. Now, The MAC stands prominently along-
side top wineries and restaurants, o ering over 4,000 square feet of gallery space, a museum store, and plenty of surprises, including the cheekily iconic outdoor sculpture known as “Big Butter.”
The MAC’s inaugural exhibition, Julia Child: A Recipe for Life, paired seamlessly with its culinary neighbor: the newly opened Understudy Café, a collaboration with PRESS Restaurant and Chef Philip Tessier. “The idea was to combine visual and culinary arts to elevate both,” says Rafaty. “Launching with Julia Child made that vision come alive from day one.”
While the Yountville museum will continue to o er a deep dive into Napa’s regional history and art, The MAC is designed for high-impact, headline-making exhibitions. In 2026, visitors can look
forward to The Wyeths: Three Generations and an expanded version of the museum’s viral hit Dangerous Games: Treacherous Toys We Loved As Kids.
“The two venues now serve complementary but distinct roles,” Rafaty explains. “And we’re seeing how The MAC’s visibility is already drawing more attention to both.”
With additional community programming, national partnerships, and pop-up exhibits—including one on tiki mugs and another celebrating BottleRock’s cultural impact—The MAC cements Napa Valley’s place on the map not just for food and wine, but as a serious and imaginative arts destination. As Rafaty puts it, “We’re building a museum experience that’s as creative and unforgettable as Napa itself.”

See Napa Valley through the lens of these accomplished artists who live, work, and play here.

JESSEL MILLER, Painter & Author
Step inside Jessel Gallery in the verdant Napa Valley countryside and you’ll find far more than just artwork. You’ll find a living, breathing arts community built by Jessel Miller—artist, author, and teacher, who opened her gallery in 1984.
A celebrated watercolorist and portraitist, Jessel’s work has appeared in prestigious exhibitions and her subjects have included Maya Angelou and Dianne Feinstein. But her influence stretches far beyond her own brushstrokes.
“I started the Napa Valley Gallery Association when there were 16 galleries in the valley,” she says. Her commitment to local culture led her to create the beloved Mustard Festival and revive it as the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration in 2022 as a valleywide celebration of artists, wineries, and local makers.
Her gallery remains a Napa Valley icon, hosting exhibitions,
writing salons, and art classes for all levels. “This is more than a business,” she says. “It’s about community.”
KRISTINA YOUNG, Painter, Muralist, & Mosaic Artist
For mural and mosaic artist Kristina Young, creativity is as much about community as it is about color and form. She found her way to Napa in the late ’90s while working on ARTscan, a bi-monthly arts newspaper for Arts Council Napa Valley. “That experience connected me with the local arts scene and gradually led to deeper involvement,” she recalls.
Nature plays a central role in both her life and work. Through plein air painting and public art projects, she seeks to deepen her connection to place, and invites others to do the same. From leading collaborative mosaics to installing permanent murals, Kristina sees her practice as a form of cultural storytelling. “The people of Napa are at the heart of much of what I do,” she explains.

NICOLE WOERNER-KELLY, Fabric Artist & Sculptor
Long before founding her brand YOLOTLI in 2012, artist Nicole Kelly was drawn to the meditative rhythm of handwork—a practice that now defines her place in Napa Valley’s evolving arts community.
Nicole blends traditional textile techniques with a modern sensibility, creating handcrafted works that reflect both environmental consciousness and timeless beauty. “I’m drawn to slow, intentional processes that honor the passage of time and challenge today’s culture of excess and disposability,” she says.
Nicole came to Napa for a job in 2008 and immersed herself in the local creative community. “I started working for an art studio and stayed on to collaborate with craft galleries and institutions,” she says. Nature has always been her muse (she hikes Westwood Hills weekly).
“The landscape is endlessly inspiring,” she notes.
Nicole’s work can be seen

throughout the valley, most notably her large-scale felt installation Just You and Me hanging above the register at Napa Bookmine. Her handcrafted YOLOTLI garments can be found at Carter & Co. in St. Helena.
EMMA KRUCH, Photographer, Stylist & Creative Director
For Emma Kruch, storytelling has always been second nature.
A self-taught photographer with a background in arts promotion, creative direction, and gallery work, she found her lens-based calling after relocating to Napa in 2013 to live near her sister. “This is the first place that truly felt like home—and the first place where I’ve been able to do exactly what I was meant to do.”
Emma thrives on capturing chefs, winemakers, and farmers in their element. “I’m super inspired by the farm culture here, and all of the amazing people that put food on our table,” she says. She takes a documentary-style approach in her work. “I
just love getting to know people and documenting them in their element,” she says.
Her must-stop spots for visitors? Moulin Bakery for its croissants “on par with New York,” Frog’s Leap Winery, and Napa Bookmine, which she calls “inclusive, welcoming, and wonderful.”
Julie Eppich is a seasoned gallerist, arts producer, and public arts advocate. Since settling in the valley a decade ago, Julie has emerged as a champion for creative placemaking.
She co-produces the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration with artist Jessel Miller, and she serves on Napa’s Public Art Steering Committee. One project, Circulation, a largescale sculpture at Napa’s triple roundabout, “is an homage to the people who’ve made Napa their home—especially the unseen labor force in the vineyards,” Julie says.
Julie also founded Art Around Napa, a walkable downtown event that pairs artists with local merchants. “It started as a gallery walk alternative,” she says, “but it’s evolving into a fullscale arts production company.”
At the core of all her e orts is a simple mission: “Wine and food are a given here. But art? Art makes it whole. It deepens the experience—for visitors and locals alike.”
Beloved bookstores o er literary escapes and keepsakes for bibliophiles.
In downtown Napa, Napa Bookmine is a local favorite with two locations—one on Pearl Street and a satellite inside the Oxbow Public Market. A few blocks away, Copperfield’s Books on First Street is equally inviting, with a wide selection that spans bestsellers to children’s stories. UpValley in St. Helena, Wild Plum Books brings modern indie bookstore vibes to Main Street. Copperfield’s Books in Calistoga carries on the indie spirit with a curated mix of fiction, nonfiction, and regional titles.

Let the rhythm of the land and the harmony of sound guide your journey to these unforgettable venues.

Each Memorial Day weekend, the valley shifts into high gear for BottleRock Napa Valley, a major festival that pairs top musical acts with Michelin-caliber chefs and gourmet food and wine tastings. On its heels, La Onda celebrates Latin music and culture with global headliners, DJs, and immersive experiences.
During summer, Blue Note Napa curates Summer Sessions at The Meritage Resort and Spa, drawing big names to a larger outdoor stage. The annual Blue Note Jazz Festival is a three-day event pairing iconic musicians with winemakers, chefs, and artists.

With a keen eye and a deep love for the valley he called home, Bob McClenahan’s captivating photography didn’t just illustrate the pages of this magazine—it helped define its spirit. Whether shooting golden-hour vineyard vistas, community celebrations, or quiet everyday beauty, Bob had an uncanny ability to make the familiar feel extraordinary. We are deeply grateful for the many years he generously shared his work with us, lending his lens to tell the stories of this place with authenticity, warmth, and style.

Don’t be afraid to get dirty— Calistoga’s mud bath rituals are safe, relaxing, and healing.

A product of the ancient volcanic activity of nearby Mount Saint Helena, Calistoga’s legendary mud combines mineral-rich volcanic ash with waters from natural mineral hot springs. The resulting magical mud has been touted for its many nurturing benefits, such as hydrating the skin, reducing inflammation, and promoting general relaxation. Depending on the spa, you either “paint” the mud on yourself or “bathe” in a mud bath. Mud bath tubs are heated from the bottom and you lie on top of a layer of mud. Spa attendants lather mud on top until you are covered to the neck, creating a feeling of weightlessness. After a short rest, mud is washed o . (The sulfur in mineral water mixed with the alkaline in volcanic ash kills all bacteria, so mud baths are perfectly sanitary.)

TRAIL SMART: SAFETY TIPS FOR RIDING THE NAPA VALLEY VINE TRAIL
Exploring wine country by bike is a joy— just make sure you’re doing it safely. Follow these tips to keep your Vine Trail ride smooth and stress-free.
1. Wear a helmet.
Most rental companies provide them— wear it properly strapped at all times.
2. Stay right, pass left.
Treat the trail like a road. Ride on the right side and announce yourself (“On your left!”) when passing pedestrians or slower riders.
3. Mind the weather.
Mornings can be cool and afternoons hot. Dress in layers, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
4. Watch for crossings.
The Vine Trail intersects several roads. Slow down, obey tra c signals, and look both ways before crossing.
5. Skip the sip until the end.
Even small pours can add up. Save wine tasting for the return leg of your ride—or plan to relax with a glass after turning in your bike.
6. Use lights if riding late.
If you’re biking near dusk, front and rear lights (plus reflective gear) are essential for visibility.
7. Keep an eye on e-bike speed. E-bikes make hills easy but can be deceptively fast. Stay aware of your speed, especially near pedestrians and narrow sections.
8. Bring a map or phone with GPS. While the trail is well marked, having navigation on hand helps for detours.

2. IN THE BAG

DO bring a day-to-night outfit. A day in Napa can take you from sunny vineyard strolls to cool evening dinners. Strategic layers ensure comfort every step of the way.
