A Heritage Breed: The Camarillo White Horse

DISCOVER WHY THIS HORSE BREED IS THE BELOVED SYMBOL OF CAMARILLO.

CAMARILLO

With their noble stature, graceful stride, and stunning snow-white coats, Camarillo White Horses resemble creatures from a storybook— and they indeed have an intriguing tale. These rare, majestic animals are integral to Camarillo’s history, standing as a symbol of the city and a testament to the importance of preserving the past.

It all began in 1921, when Adolfo Camarillo saw a pure-white stallion named Sultan at the California State Fair. Awestruck by his beauty, Camarillo purchased Sultan and bred him with Morgan mares at his ranch, creating a new breed. Camarillo Whites quickly gained popularity as they appeared in local parades and events.

“It’s amazing to see how many people love these animals,” says Harold Parker, Camarillo’s great-grandson and president of the Camarillo White Horse Association (CWHA).

Parker has spent his entire life around the horses and fondly recalls grooming, riding, and preparing them for parades. He sees Camarillo Whites as living history and honors his great-grandfather’s vision by safeguarding their heritage and legacy.

“They’re important to the history of not just Camarillo but also other cities,” Parker says. “They opened the Bay Bridge in 1936, they opened the 1932 Olympics in L.A., [Ronald] Reagan rode one in the Camarillo Cinco de Mayo Parade.”

Since 1992, the CWHA has tirelessly worked to sustain

The Guardian

WHO WAS MELITON ORTIZ?

Adolfo Camarillo’s trusted confidant, Meliton Ortiz was more than just a ranch foreman—he was the guardian of the Camarillo White Horse. His commitment to the breed, including saving horses from a ranch fire, ensured that Camarillo’s prized white stallions remained a lasting symbol of the city’s rich ranching heritage.

Sultan’s bloodline through selective breeding. These efforts have increased the number of Camarillo Whites from 11 to 24, but challenges remain, as there’s only a 50% chance of producing white offspring. By educating the public about the significance of Camarillo Whites, Parker hopes more community members become inspired to breed and protect them.

“I’m proud of what I’ve helped carry on, and I want to get more people involved,” he says. “The biggest tragedy would be the breed not continuing, but I’m optimistic about their future.”

LEARN EVEN MORE ABOUT THIS RARE EQUINE.

Unique DNA

Recent studies found that Camarillo Whites carry a unique gene mutation that prevents the coat from expressing color, resulting in a purewhite hue. Breeders can check their horses for this mutation through genetic testing at University of California, Davis.

Horses are suitable for everything from trail riding and dressage to ranch work and search and rescue.

Notable Appearances

These horses have pranced in parades throughout California, including the Tournament of Roses and Santa Barbara’s Fiesta parade.

Stallion of a Dream

The iconic breed descended from one sire—a white Spanish mustang named Sultan. Adolfo Camarillo called Sultan a “stallion of a dream” given his striking appearance and friendly, gentle temperament.

These horses are born with pink skin and white coats that never fade.

DISTINCTLLY CAMARILLO

The Camarillo White Horse is more than 100 years old and began with a single horse, Sultan. Rancher Adolfo Camarillo purchased Sultan in the early 1900s and was so struck by the stallion’s coloring that he began a breeding program to create an entirely new kind of horse. Sultan and his offspring have since become synonymous with the city of Camarillo itself.

Camarillo’s Legacy

GET TO KNOW THE CITY’S FOUNDATIONAL BEGINNINGS.

Camarillo’s history is deeply rooted in the Spanish and Mexican heritage of California. In 1837, Spain claimed the area and granted land to José Pedro Ruiz. Rancher Juan Camarillo would later purchase the property known as Rancho Calleguas in 1875, but it was his son, Adolfo Camarillo, who would transform the area into a thriving agricultural hub and lay the foundation for the city that now bears his name.

At just 16 years old, Adolfo took over the ranch after his father’s passing, shifting its focus from cattle to crops. He introduced lima beans and citrus, paving the way for Camarillo’s agricultural success. His Queen Anne–style ranch house, built in 1892, became a landmark of the region and a testament to his prosperity.

Adolfo’s influence extended beyond farming, too. He offered up some of his property to bring the Southern Pacific Railroad through Camarillo, and later allowed Highway 101 to expand onto his land, ensuring the town’s accessibility.

When the city of Camarillo officially incorporated in 1964, it chose Adolfo Camarillo’s name—an enduring tribute to his vision, generosity, and role in shaping the city.

INDIGENOUS HISTORY

Echoes of the Past

LONG BEFORE CAMARILLO BECAME THE THRIVING COMMUNITY IT IS TODAY, THE CHUMASH PEOPLE LIVED IN HARMONY WITH THE LAND.

For more than 13,000 years, the Chumash people inhabited the coastal and inland regions of what is now Ventura County. The Native American tribe established numerous villages, some of which were located in the Pleasant Valley region.

Renowned for their maritime skills, the Chumash crafted plank canoes known as tomols, enabling trade and communication across the Channel Islands and mainland. Their society was marked by intricate basketry, vibrant rock art, and a deep spiritual connection to the land.

Despite the profound disruptions following European contact, Chumash descendants continue to honor and preserve their rich heritage, ensuring that the legacy of their ancestors remains a vital part of Camarillo’s cultural landscape.

To learn more about the Chumash, visit the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum & Garden

Always in Season

Well before California became a state in 1850, the bountiful lands of this locale brought early farmers and ranchers to the area. These hard-working individuals helped shape the future of the township of Camarillo and its economy through ingenuity and industriousness, both of which helped define the region’s modern agricultural industry.

Bring reusable bags. While many stands offer plastic bags, do your part to minimize singleuse plastics by using a cute tote.

Arrive early. The early bird gets the worm when it comes to first dibs on the best produce; plus, farm stands and markets tend to be less crowded.

Have some cash. Most produce vendors offer some form of digital payment, but it’s always good to have cash on hand just in case.

CAMARILLO FARM TRAIL

A veritable cornucopia, Camarillo takes a lot of pride in its agricultural heritage. Experience it for yourself at stops like Rodela Produce & Flowers along the Camarillo Farm Trail. Turn the page for all the info!

meet the growers

Best friends and farmers Scott Bahler and Dan Vigna create a u-pick blueberry paradise.

Fresh, juicy, and organic blueberries are ripe for the u-picking at One Acre Farm, located at Camarillo’s historic Gerry (pronounced Gary) Ranch. Thanks to the efforts of filmmaker-turned-farmer Scott Bahler and aerospace engineer Dan Vigna (pictured left to right), families and fruit lovers of all ages can

harvest their own blueberries every Saturday from February through May.

Having grown up in the Midwest, Bahler returned to his agricultural roots, trading in his filmmaking career for fields of blueberries after “meeting a farm girl in L.A.”

“I saw they were growing blueberries in pots,” Bahler recalls. “The idea stuck with me and I decided to give it a shot.” After partnering with his longtime friend, Vigna, Bahler leased a plot of land from his in-laws. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Bahler savors the farming life with his family, laughing that they help out with “tasting.”

“It’s so fulfilling being able to see the work you did—to see it visually. It’s not a conversation and not a meeting, but you can literally see the fruit of your work,” he says.

Visitors to One Acre Farm reap the benefits of their labor as they pick ripe blueberries and strawberries straight from the source. (The farm also grows microgreens, tomatoes, and popcorn.) Fill a basket or take home a blueberry bush to experience the joys of growing your own bounty.

“It’s very satisfying to be able to share that with people,” says Vigna, who spends a couple days each week taking a break from aerospace to get his hands dirty.

Now more than nine years in, the duo plans to keep planting.

“We’ve gotten our game down and we’re looking to grow,” says Vigna.

It’s so fulfilling being able to see the work you did ... It’s not a conversation and not a meeting, but you can literally see the fruit of your work.”
—SCOTT BAHLER, cofounder and farmer of One Acre Farm

Local Tastes Better

Shop the Camarillo Certified Farmers Market for asfresh-as-it-gets fruits and veggies.

Touted as “the real thing,” the Camarillo Certified Farmers Market in Old Town (every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon) features nearly two dozen certified-organic produce vendors, as well as several local artisans and food purveyors.

FARMER PROFILE
Pick blueberries right from the source at One Acre Farm.
Camarillo is having a regenerative agriculture renaissance, thanks to Rodale Institute California Organic Center. Located at McGrath Family Farm, the center conducts research on climate, soils, crops, pests, and weed management across California agricultural lands in an effort to keep regenerative organic methods both successful and profitable for farmers.

The Fruits of Your Labor FARM FRESH

SHOP, TASTE, AND PICK YOUR WAY ALONG THE CAMARILLO FARM TRAIL.

Camarillo’s agricultural roots run deep, and the Camarillo Farm Trail offers a taste of the region’s freshest flavors from field and vine. From pick-your-own produce to locally made honey, these stops highlight the best of Ventura County’s bounty.

When peak berry season hits, head to Las Posas Berries roadside farm stand for the best strawberries around. The stand is usually open Wednesday to Sunday, and is the place to get the juiciest, picked-that-day strawberries and other locally grown produce. To add a dose of cheer to your trip, Rodela Produce & Flowers sells freshcut flowers and bouquets and local produce.

Just off Highway 101, McGrath Family Farm is a 300-acre swath of microfarms growing just about everything under the sun—and it’s all organic.

One such microfarm is Baby Root Farm, a regenerative farm that grows roots, shoots, fruits, and California native plants. Before you head out, stop by The Store at McGrath Family Farm, where everything is sourced locally from socially responsible farms and purveyors.

In nearby Somis, Underwood Family Farms is open all year for u-pick produce with fresh seasonal finds. Bring the kids, pack a picnic, and say “hi” to the sheep, alpacas, chickens, and pygmy goats at the Animal Center. For more animal cuteness in Somis, there’s Oats & Ivy Farm, a goat dairy that makes smallbatch, goat milk skin care products. Paty’s Farm (also in Somis) has a wide selection of seasonal produce, while Somis Nut House offers plenty of nuts, dried fruits, and handmade candies.

Know Before You Go Farm stands and u-picks may be affected by weather and season. Be sure to check if they’re open before visiting.

sun scenery &adventure

Camarillo is your ultimate home base for adventure, offering scenic landscapes, familyfriendly fun, and unique local experiences. Whether it’s exploring the great outdoors, cheering on the team, or taking to the skies, your perfect itinerary starts here.

Hit the Trails

From rolling hills to picturesque farmland, here are seven spots to hike and bike.

1

DARYL WAGAR TRAIL

Located at Camarillo Grove Park, this 0.7-mile hike is perfect for a stroll with the family. Take in the gentle slopes and scenic vistas plus informative signage with insights on the local flora, fauna, and ecosystems. Pro tip: Stop by the park’s Nature Center to learn even more about the area.

2

WILDWOOD HILL CANYON TRAIL

With a river on one side and Elliott Mountain on the other, this tranquil trail is a fantastic intro to Wildwood Regional Park

The wide pathway makes for an easy and safe 1.9-mile out-andback trek, while branching trails along the route allow for further exploration. Leashed dogs are welcome.

3

CALLEGUAS CREEK BIKE PATH

Running through the east side of Camarillo, this popular paved trail travels alongside the Calleguas Creek, with views of the surrounding mountains and hillsides. Take a detour to Pitts Ranch Park at the north end of the trail, or make a stop at Institution Ale Company at the south end for brews and snacks.

4

BRIDLEWOOD TRAIL

Just east of Camarillo, take in bucolic sights, like ranches, vineyards, and farm animals, along this moderate 4.1-mile loop trail. While the trail is open to the public, parts of it pass through private property. Please follow all rules posted on signage in these areas.

If your idea of outdoor fun includes two or four wheels, Camarillo has space for you. Catch race nights or a training clinic at Freedom Park’s BMX Raceway, or carve the concrete at the 12,000-square-foot skate park at Bob Kildee Community Park. And for those remote control racing enthusiasts, the Roadrunners R/C Club welcomes guests to race or watch RC cars zoom around the track at Freedom Park.

POP A WHEELIE

Ace!

Whether you’re an avid pickleballer or new to the game, Camarillo has plenty of mixed-use courts to play on including at Pitts Ranch, Springville, and Bob Kildee Community parks. And coming soon is the all-new Freedom Park Pickleball Complex!

5

WILDWOOD CANYON TRAIL

Wildwood Canyon Trail in neighboring Thousand Oaks offers a little bit of everything— water crossings, mountain vistas, caves, historical landmarks—but the highlight of the trip is the 40-foot Paradise Falls. Pro tip: Pack a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water—long stretches of the 5.7-mile loop trail provide little to no shade.

6

CHUMASH TRAIL

Don’t let the short 1.2-mile distance fool you. Just 15 minutes south of Camarillo, the steep, rocky trail will get your heart pumping as you ascend nearly 900 feet in less than a mile, but the vistas of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands National Park at the top are well worth the effort. Dogs are not allowed.

7

POINT MUGU SCENIC AND OVERLOOK TRAILS

From wildflowers to panoramic views of the California coastline, this 2.7-mile trail in nearby Point Mugu State Park redefines gorgeous. With a steady yet gentle elevation gain of 413 feet, it’s ideal for a brisk trail run. The best time to explore this loop is spring to early summer when the wildflowers are in bloom. Dogs are not allowed.

the untouched beauty of Channel Islands National Park.

Just off the Ventura County coast, Channel Islands National Park is a hidden gem of rugged beauty, rich history, and diverse wildlife. While close to the California mainland, the five remote islands feel worlds apart, offering a glimpse of Southern California’s coast as it once was—undeveloped, wild, and teeming with life.

Luckily, you can experience this national park for yourself, and Camarillo is the ideal home base for your island adventure, offering easy access to Anacapa Island from Oxnard Harbor and Santa Cruz Island from Ventura Harbor

To reach either island, book a ferry with Island Packers, the official boat concessionaire for the park. The journey itself is part of the experience—keep an eye out for dolphins, sea lions, and even whales along

the way. Anacapa Island, known for its dramatic cliffs and historic lighthouse, is great for a short visit, while Santa Cruz Island, the largest in the chain, offers miles of hiking trails, sea caves ripe for exploring by kayak, and opportunities to spot the endemic island fox and island scrub jay. (You can camp on Santa Cruz Island, too!)

Long before it was a national park, though, the Channel Islands were home to the Chumash people for thousands of years. Archaeological sites and artifacts found on the islands provide insight into their connection to this unique environment. Today, visitors can explore these pristine and protected landscapes, where years of isolation have preserved a rich diversity of plants, animals, and cultural resources found nowhere else.

Weekend Warriors

Sports Tournaments in Camarillo

With 28 parks operated by the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District, the city is home to state-of-the-art soccer and baseball fields and is a premier sports competition destination. From family-friendly dining to must-know tips, here’s your ultimate guide to hassle-free tournament travel.

5 Tips to Crush Game Days

To make long game days easier, tournament parents Alex Mathis and Cassandra Sutton, president and director of baseball operations and director of sponsorships and programming of Camarillo Pony Baseball Association, offer some helpful advice.

1 KNOW THE BEST LOCAL EATS Between games, fuel up at local favorites like Waypoint Cafe for a hearty breakfast or Toppers Pizza for a postgame team meal.

2 EXPLORE NEARBY ATTRACTIONS Take advantage of downtime by visiting local beaches (p. 33), or family-friendly attractions (p. 34).

3 STAY GAME DAY READY Keep a stocked tournament kit with extra chairs, shade tents, snacks, and a first-aid kit to stay comfortable during long game days.

4 PLAN FOR THE WEATHER Camarillo’s coastal climate is mild, but mornings can be foggy and afternoons sunny. Dress in layers and bring sun protection.

5 BE PREPARED FOR TRAFFIC AND PARKING Tournament weekends can bring heavy traffic around Camarillo’s sports complexes. Arrive early to secure parking and avoid last-minute stress.

Forgot Something?

BUILDING SPORTSMANSHIP

Camarillo Pony Baseball Association (CPBA) is dedicated to more than just the game—it’s about building character. Through a well-structured, youth-focused program, CPBA works to instill sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity in every player. With balanced playing time and skill development for all levels, the lessons learned here go far beyond the field.

ROOM TO PLAY

Camarillo is the spot for game days, tournaments, and all-around fun.

Looking for the perfect place to hit a homer? Freedom Park’s lighted Baseball Complex offers one adult and six youth fields and Bob Kildee Community Park features nine youth baseball fields (three are lighted) and a snack bar, while Mission Oaks Park and Pleasant Valley Fields host softball games on several manicured diamonds. HIGHFLYING HISTORY

Discover

the city’s aviation past.

Camarillo’s aviation legacy took off during World War II, when the area was home to two military air stations. The former Oxnard Air Force Base, which expanded during the Cold War, has since transformed into Camarillo Airport, a hub for private aviation and events. Meanwhile, the Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu remains active and hosts the Point Mugu Air Show every four years. Aviation enthusiasts explore this rich history at the Commemorative Air Force

Taking Flight

Experience a plane ride like no other with the Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing.

Did you know that at age 12, Audrey Hepburn helped people to safety during WWII? Or that Julia Child was a CIA spy? These are just some of the fascinating historical anecdotes I learned during an incredibly informative tour at the Commemorative Air Force Southern California (CAF SoCal) Wing WWII Aviation Museum.

From planting victory gardens to spotting planes, “everyone was involved with the war effort,” says museum docent Peter Pezuto, as we meander through historical artifacts, educational exhibitions, and aircraft displays designed to bring defining moments in American military aviation history to life.

collections of rare and carefully restored vintage aircraft, the museum provides a unique opportunity for guests to ride in a historic warplane. And lucky for me, I get to experience what it’s like to fly in a B-25/ PBJ-1J Mitchell bomber, the only airworthy plane of its kind.

Out on the tarmac, I take in the impressive fleet of WWII planes including a Grumman F6F Hellcat, Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat, Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIV, and Fairchild PT-19A Cornell—all maintained and flown by CAF SoCal Wing members. Before I know it, my fellow passengers and I follow our leaders to the mighty B-25, where the pilots and crew warmly welcome us. I pop my Dramamine as our

loadmaster, Mike Marua, begins the preflight safety briefing. Reaching a max speed of 284 miles per hour with a 1,525-mile range, the B-25 boasts a 67-foot, 7-inch wingspan; two Wright R-2600-13 18-cylinder, 1,700-horsepower radial engines; and capacity for 16 .50-caliber machine guns and a 3,000-pound bomb/torpedo. One of 800 B-25s built for the Navy, the refurbished plane made its first flight in May 2016 following a 23-year restoration.

Our friendly, knowledgeable crew answers questions before welcoming us aboard. Three passengers load into the front with the pilot and copilot, while I (and three others) climb the ladder into the bomb bay, retrofitted with seats.

As we settle in, Marua puts us at ease, ensuring our oldstyle seat belts are secure and reassuring us (mostly me) that we are in good hands. After offering earplugs, nausea bags (I take one, just in case), and a big smile, Marua points to the headphones, recommended for muffling the engine noise.

As the engine roars to life, we taxi into position. I spot a giant hawk and a great blue heron near the runway out my gunner-seat window, which feels like a good omen. Though I nervously eye a round opening in the plane.

“Does that stay open?” I ask

Marua, who nods and warns us not to get too close.

We soar into the air, gaining altitude as Marua intently watches both sides of the plane, demonstrating his serious focus on safety. After the warbird levels off, he motions for us to explore the aircraft.

I admittedly am not the first out of my seat but gain confidence watching my fellow passengers. Summoning the courage to walk/crawl to the tail window of the plane, I am rewarded with bird’s-eye views of Camarillo, Boney Mountain, and the surrounding area.

Finally relaxed, I revel in the beauty of the moment—the shining sun, blue sky, and epic scenery afforded by this unparalleled adventure—feeling unbounded reverence for not only our crew, but the brave souls who manned this aircraft while defending our nation.

Circling back to the airport after about 25 minutes in the air, we land smoothly and taxi past waving onlookers, gazing in awe at the stately looking warplane. Postflight, I ask pilot Mike Hohls what he likes most about the B-25.

“Sharing it!” he responds without hesitation. “In the Air Force, I flew one-seaters all alone. Here, we have four flight crew and seven smiling faces at the end of the trip”—including mine.

FROM VIBRANT STUDIO ARTS TO UNIQUE MUSEUMS, CAMARILLO IS HOME TO A THRIVING CULTURAL SCENE.

Where Art Comes to Life

Studio Channel Islands is a colorful hub for creativity, fostering artistic connection and community. BY

A true community pillar, Studio Channel Islands (SCIART) in Camarillo Old Town transforms a former elementary school campus into a whimsical, welcoming art center that showcases 200 regional artists.

Home to 30 artists’ studios, two art galleries, and an outdoor event space and sculpture garden, SCIART aims to unite creators with the greater Camarillo community.

“Everyone is welcome to come by and walk the site [and] visit the sculpture garden and art galleries,” says SCIART executive director Peter Tyas.

On the first Saturday of every month, the center opens its doors to the community for open studios where visitors can talk to artists, walk through their studios, and observe demonstrations and works in progress, many of which rival big-city exhibitions.

Located in a former elementary school in Old Town, Studio Channel Islands is a collection of galleries, artist studios, outreach programs, and creative event space that brings local artists and the community together. Visitors are invited to stop by for First Saturdays to observe artists at work, or Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, to view exhibitions. Admission is free.

“You will see the same quality work here as in any Los Angeles–based gallery,” Tyas says of the center’s painters, ceramists, fiber artists, and other creatives’ works, which can be viewed during open studios and rotating exhibitions.

In fact, one could say that SCIART’s open studio days are a dream come true, especially since the center’s founding president opened the art center 25 years ago with the goal of creating a space for artists to work and for local students to experience art.

In addition to

experiencing artists’ studios, guests can stroll the Roxie Ray Garden with its unique sculptures, bright orange benches, native plants, and inspirational donor bricks, one of which

reads: “May this garden be a lasting symbol of creativity and community.”

And don’t miss the center’s new on-site cinema, featuring art-house and student films, as well as

Birds of a Feather

Discover the wider, colorful world of birds at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology.

MAJESTIC BIRDS posed in mid-flight, a dazzling array of vividly colored eggs, nests of all shapes and sizes: Walk through the doors of the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (WFVZ), and you are instantly transported to a world above. With more than a million specimens in its catalogue, including the world’s largest collection of bird eggs, the museum provides a one-ofa-kind look at the lives, sounds, and sights of these feathery neighbors.

“We want to build a connection to nature for people,” says collections manager René Corado. “People don’t even realize birds are around them all the time, then after they come here, they start to notice the nests, they start to notice the birds singing, they learn what they’re saying. It’s so much fun.”

Corado knows firsthand how life-changing that connection can be. Born in a small Guatemalan village in the midst of the country’s 36-year-

long civil war, he emigrated to Southern California in 1981 at the age of 21. With no formal education past sixth grade and speaking no English, he took on odd jobs until a gig as a gardener brought him to the home of Ed Harrison, an avid birder and the founder of WFVZ.

“I asked him through a translator about his collection, and he said that he was a biologist, that he loved birds, and he was trying to save them,” says

Corado. “And I said, ‘I want to be a biologist, too!’”

More than four decades later, Corado sees that same spark light up in visitors as they learn about the birds in their backyards as well as rare and endangered species. In fact, Corado notes, quite a few kids have been inspired to pursue careers in biology after touring the museum.

“Education is the key to open your dreams,” he says. “We’re trying to give that opportunity to others.”

Visits to the museum are by appointment only and include an hour-long tour. WFVZ also offers comprehensive birding classes every spring and winter that include two workshops and two field trips—a perfect chance to discover some of the 200-plus local bird species out in the wild. (Class sizes are limited to 20 participants, so make sure to sign up early!)

fusion frenzy

Chef Alex Castillo brings his

passion to the table at Latitude 34.

For Alex Castillo, executive chef and co-owner of Latitude 34 Restaurant & Bar, community is more than a buzzword. It’s what makes his restaurant consistently great. Opened in 2022, Latitude 34 is California fusion at its finest— and it has quickly won a devoted following among locals and visitors alike. (Note: Making a reservation is strongly recommended!) With sensibilities as sleek and elegant as its interior, the seafood-and-steak restaurant features a menu bursting with flavors from around the globe— not to mention, a large selection of wine and local craft beer—that speaks to Ventura County’s rich diversity as well as Castillo’s decades of experience as an awardwinning chef.

But Castillo is quick to pass credit to his staff of about 50 for the restaurant’s success. “It’s like a basketball team,” says the chef. “You can be LeBron James in the kitchen, but if you don’t have good teammates, you’re not going to do anything.”

Although he always had a passion for food, Castillo initially pursued a different career path, earning a bachelor’s degree in business management and landing an office job at a food processing plant in Oxnard.

Food BEST BITES

Chef Alex Castillo lives out his passion creating delicious seasonal dishes spotlighting local ingredients.

“It was so boring!” exclaims Castillo, who spent many of his teenage years working at restaurants. “I was used to the hustle and bustle of a restaurant. Being stuck in a little cubicle with no food to eat? I just couldn’t.”

Now he lives out his passion, creating delicious seasonal dishes spotlighting local ingredients, such as the melt-in-your-mouth filet mignon bites with garlic-chili

noodles, pickled cucumbers, ginger, and wasabi aioli or the fried calamari seasoned with sliced chilies, a garlicherb aioli, and arrabbiata sauce. For something even more decadent, there’s the lobster seafood pasta, a linguine dish loaded with lobster tail, sauteed shrimp, mussels, and a rich tomato-cream sauce. “Add a nice glass of wine and you’re in heaven,” Castillo says. Along with weekly specials alternating between

seafood and steak, the restaurant also offers live music every Thursday and Sunday and brunch on the weekends.

“Running a restaurant like this is challenging but rewarding,” he says. “I wouldn’t exchange it for anything else. At the end of the day, I’m grateful to have such a strong team who helped me get to this point. I don’t celebrate on my own; I celebrate with the whole team.”

In the heart of Old Town, The Mark is your one-stop spot for eating, drinking, and hanging out. At Freda’s Kitchen, go classic with a Margherita pizza or get a little fancy with a speck and arugula pie. And nothing goes better with a slice than a locally brewed pint from Topa Topa Brewing Company (Try the Chief Peak IPA!) To top it all off, grab a scoop from Rori’s Artisanal Creamery. Good luck choosing from the shop’s extensive menu: There’s salted caramel, lemon curd, and cinnamon toast cereal crunch, to name a few. On second thought, better make it a double scoop.

Enjoy a meal outside at Latitude 34 Restaurant & Bar.

all about family

Chef Danielle Saleh of Onyx Bistro makes every meal a celebration.

As the chef-owner of Onyx Bistro, Saleh has crafted a dining experience that feels rooted in the now, from the airy interior festooned with string lights, houseplants, and local art (plus, live music every Friday and Saturday) to the seasonal, inclusive menu that elevates comfort food with bold Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian flavors—not to mention, a wine list tailored to perfectly complement entrees.

“In this day and age, we’re always on the go. We all live busy lives,”

says the young restaurateur, who opened Onyx in March 2022. “After a long day of having so much going on, knowing you have a place to rely on for a really good, comforting meal, where you feel like you belong, where you feel that people care about you—that’s what we try to create here.”

In many ways, the Ventura County native feels right at home running an eatery. Her parents owned a restaurant and catering business while she was growing up, and she learned firsthand the key to making great food.

“One big thing I took away from my parents was putting quality over quantity,” she says. “I try to source the best ingredients, and I really try to support our local farms. I’m getting the freshest produce possible, with it being picked a day or two before I’m serving it.”

It’s a difference you can taste, whether it’s a savory wild mushroom bucatini tossed in cashew cream sauce and topped with sesame seeds and scallions; the pan-seared wild scallops served over rosemary-Parmesan risotto with grilled asparagus and roasted red pepper coulis; or the popular loaded cheese board with four artisan cheeses paired with marinated olives, pickles, seasonal fruit, house-seasoned nut mix, and homemade fig jam.

Saleh also tries to accommodate every type of eater—half of her menu is gluten free, and another 20% is vegan. It all comes together to create an experience that feels truly communal.

“I know a lot of my regulars by name; we know their families. Getting to know everyone on a personal level makes it even more special,” says Saleh. “I’m always telling people, ‘You’re family,’ and everyone knows I mean it.”

Italian Flavors

A favorite at family-run Lucerne Restaurant is the risotto de la casa, a rich combo of shrimp, sausage, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes. At long-running Ottavio’s Italian Restaurant (open since 1969!), classic dishes are served in generous portions. Looking for lighter fare? Pop next door for a loaded sando at Ottavio’s Deli & Italian Market For a sit-down meal, order the lobster ravioli with prosciutto and green peas at Bistro 13. Newcomer Chianti Trattoria & Pizzeria’s claim to delicious fame is its homemade gnocchi. And at Italian steak house Manhattan of Camarillo, the blue cheese–stuffed filet mignon is a must. When it comes to Italian food, Camarillo is living la bella vita.

There’s always room for dessert. Known for creating specialty cakes for major events like the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Oscars gift lounges, Bread Basket Cake Company turns out gorgeous tarts, fluffy cupcakes, and other treats. For frozen dessert fans, a banana split smothered in fudge and strawberries from Mister Softee is sure to hit the spot. Or, opt for a customizable cup of frozen yogurt from Wild Cherry, acai bowls and smoothies from Ubatuba Açaí, or gelato and delicate confections (think truffles, bonbons, and salted caramels) from Tifa Chocolate & Gelato. foodie picks

Beyond the well-known favorites, Camarillo is home to incredible under-the-radar eateries. From cozy cafes to mom-and-pop hot spots, here are the expertbacked picks you won’t want to miss.

Slate Steak, Sushi & Cocktails

Slate may have built its reputation on steak, but here’s the real insider tip: The sushi is low-key one of the best things on the menu. Freshly made, expertly rolled, and somehow still flying under the radar, it’s the kind of best-kept secret that regulars don’t mind keeping to themselves. From pristine sashimi to perfectly balanced specialty rolls, every bite proves this bistro takes its fish just as seriously as its beef.

Panadería Lucero

Panadería Lucero is the kind of place that makes waking up early feel like a reward. This family-run gem is the perfect launchpad for any Camarillo adventure. Start with the Café de Olla, brewed with just the right balance of cinnamon and piloncillo (raw cane sugar), or go for one of the rotating coffee specials because, let’s be real, this spot never misses. On the pastry side, the conchas here are textbook fluffy, with a crisp, sugary shell that gives way to pillowy perfection.

Lola Betty’s Kitchen

For lunch, make your way to Lola Betty’s Kitchen, where Filipino comfort food takes center stage. What started as a humble food truck has now found a well-deserved permanent home in Camarillo Old Town. This spot serves up the kind of flavors that keep regulars coming back. Start with a crispy, golden order of lumpia followed by a plate of chicken adobo—tangy, garlicky, and slow-braised to perfection. And don’t even think about skipping the pancit, a noodle dish that’s a celebration on a plate.

The Local is exactly what it sounds like—a true neighborhood watering hole where the bartenders feel like old friends, the drinks are always on point, and the vibes are just right. The must-orders? Start with the Honey 4 My Honey, a popular pick

that’s the right balance of sweet and smooth. If you’re in the mood for something floral and intriguing, the Lilac Wine is the right move. And for a proper nightcap, go for the Cereal Killer— because who doesn’t want a little nostalgia with their last sip?

Mom KitchenWong

Mom Wong Kitchen is one of those spots that feels like a secret—and that’s because it basically is. Tucked away on the California State University Channel Islands campus, this true hidden gem has zero social media presence, relying entirely on word-of-mouth buzz. And you can trust the hype is real. The stars of the menu? Hand-cut noodles that are thick, chewy, and perfectly sauced, plus a bowl of dandan noodles that brings the heat with just the right amount of spice and nuttiness. One bite will have you wondering why more people aren’t talking about it—until you realize those who know are probably keeping it all to themselves.

Topa Restaurant

While it’s usually reserved for members, this tuckedaway haven occasionally opens its doors to nonmembers, offering a rare chance to sip and soak in the magic of the Topatopa Mountains at golden hour.

TREE LOUNGE COFFEE

The Central Coast doesn’t play when it comes to coffee, and neither does Tree Lounge Coffee. This cozy Camarillo spot is brewing with intention, pulling shots from Beacon Coffee—one of the area’s most beloved local roasters. But it’s not just about a solid espresso here. Tree Lounge leans into creativity with drinks like the ube latte, a velvety, purple-hued pick-me-up that’s as photogenic as it is delicious.

Local stylist Monica Serrato offers her top tips to shop the Camarillo Premium Outlets.

Camarillo Premium Outlets draws shopping aficionados from near and far in search of special deals. Savvy shoppers like local stylist Monica Serrato frequent outlet retailers for everything from clothes and purses to shoes and home goods. With so many great stores to choose from, deciding where to start can be a bit overwhelming. Here, Serrato shares her professional shopping know-how:

I love how they have everything available there—I have to try to stay away!”
—MONICA SERRATO, local stylist

LIST IT: Make a list of what you need before you go. This will help you focus and cross off the things you’re looking for rather than getting sidetracked.

RESEARCH: If you need basics, look at the directory and find the stores that offer clothing basics, like Gap and Ralph Lauren. Also pay attention to the outlet’s location, as the stores are stretched over several blocks.

EXPECT SURPRISES: In addition to great prices, shoppers can find items they won’t see anywhere else, like at kate spade

MAKE SURE TO REFUEL: There’s a little bit of everything here—try Loru’s Cafe for tasty sandwiches, pancakes, and cappuccinos.

SCHEDULE ENOUGH TIME: To eat and shop, allow 3.5 to 4 hours; most shoppers need at least 2 hours.

Ask a Wedding Expert

FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING HAVING THEIR WEDDING IN THIS SCENIC CITY, LOCAL WEDDING EXPERT JACLYN CARRILLO IS HERE TO HELP.

Featuring sun-drenched rolling hills, sprawling vineyards, and lavish gardens, Camarillo provides a romantic backdrop for any wedding. As the venue manager at Casi Cielo Vineyards and Gerry Ranch, Jaclyn Carrillo has 20 years of industry experience and knows how to make a dream wedding a reality. Here, she shares what makes Camarillo a unique wedding destination and what couples should— and shouldn’t—do when planning their nuptials.

PICTURE-PERFECT VENUES Finding the right wedding backdrop can be a lot. Luckily, Camarillo has so many beautiful venues to choose from. Turn the page to see a complete list.

JACLYN CARRILLO is a Camarillo wedding expert with 20 years of experience.

Why is Camarillo a special place to get married?

JC: Camarillo is an ideal destination due to its beauty, tranquility, and great weather. The pace is slower here, so people feel more relaxed and connected with nature.

What are your top tips for couples?

JC: Choose a venue that offers all-inclusive packages. This will streamline the wedding planning process and lessen the stress.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember the big picture: Getting married is what truly matters, not the glassware or the color of the tablecloths. Stick with the pros. Pick experienced vendors recommended by your wedding coordinator or planner. (Avoid hiring a college student who DJs on the side or asking your bridesmaids to build a wedding arch.)

What are common mistakes couples should avoid?

JC: Having unrealistic expectations. People will see photos of a wedding on social media and want to duplicate it, but they don’t know how much it cost. Couples must be flexible and realistic, and match their budget with their expectations.

I’ve also heard of weddings getting shut down days before they’re supposed to happen because the venue wasn’t permitted—it’s a nightmare scenario for couples. Always check the venue’s website for the badge showing it’s approved by Ventura County to host events.

How can couples make their wedding unique?

JC: Add personal touches. I saw one couple who loved golf have a putt-putt course at their wedding. I’ve also seen signature cocktails, personalized napkins, and signs with fun facts about the bride and groom.

Built in 1918, the McCormick Home Ranch is a Colonial-style venue surrounded by 11 acres of manicured gardens, palms, and patios.
