A TWIN TRIUMPH: LOCAL CAR RETAILER CELEBRATES AS POPULAR MODELS WIN BIG AT PRESTIGIOUS AWARD CEREMONIES

A car retailer in Lincoln is celebrating a double win after two of its most popular models scooped prestigious awards for their performance, comfort and practicality.

Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields is celebrating after the XC60 – recently crowned the bestselling Volvo of all time – was named ‘Best Car for Towing’ at this year’s Autotrader Awards.

Judges agreed the mid-sized Volvo SUV offered effortless performance, strong towing capability, excellent comfort levels and a roomy interior, along with easy driving characteristics.

The panel went on to praise the car’s customer feedback, revealing how one owner commented: “The whole ‘being’ of the car makes you feel like being wrapped up in a fluffy duvet, all warm, soft and comfortable.”

Adding to Stoneacre Lincoln’s success, the car retailer’s smallest model, the EX30, was named Small Premium SUV of the year at the Auto Express New Car Awards.

The Auto Express New Car Awards are one of the highlights of the automotive calendar, picking out the best in the business across 27 categories and focusing on the things that matter

to consumers – from practicality and efficiency to reliability and the driving experience.

Designed with safety and sustainability in mind, the EX30 is made from recycled materials and has the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date, thanks to a new pure-EV platform.

Announcing the award, Auto Express Editor, Paul Barker, said: “Premium in brand but brilliantly priced to open up classy electric cars to a wider audience, the Volvo EX30 is an allround star, combining sure-footed handling with comfort, space and plenty of performance. It’s a small SUV, but it goes big on quality.”

Andy McInnes at Stoneacre Lincoln, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Volvo XC60 and EX30 models receive much-valued seals of approval after rigorous judging processes in their respected categories and awards.

“Like Volvo’s other award-winning models, this string of accolades for the XC60 and EX30 reflects the importance Volvo places on making

DR JANJUA ACHIEVES MSC AND BRINGS INNOVATIVE LIGHT THERAPY TO BRIGG PATIENTS

In 2017, Sheeraz Janjua, the owner and senior optometrist at O’Brien’s Optician in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, attained a Doctor of Optometry degree. In 2025, he has built on that success by completing his MSc in Clinical Optometry at Cardiff University.

His latest achievement entailed a number of examinations and the compilation of an extensive review of current research into Photobiomodulation, a new form of therapy which uses special light sources to treat patients who have Dry Age-related Macular Disease (DryAMD) or patients who have Dry Eye Disease (DED) or Meibomion Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Dr Janjua has been using these new light-based therapies extensively in his practice in Brigg and his treated patients have been reporting very positive results.

O’Brien’s, in Wrawby Street, Brigg, welcomes the registration of new patients and is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.

BEACH DAYS & BUCKET HATS

A FAMILY DAY OUT ON THE LINCOLNSHIRE COAST

Domestic travel is on the rise, with 28% of Brits planning a long-stay holiday within the UK this year, while 33% are opting for a weekend away*

There’s something timeless about a trip to the seaside, ice cream in hand, toes in the sand, and the sound of waves rolling in. The Lincolnshire coast is home to some of the UK’s most family-friendly beaches, and whether you’re heading to Skegness, Mablethorpe, Cleethorpes or somewhere more tucked away, a beach day can be the perfect way to make summer memories with the kids.

But as with all outdoor adventures, a little planning goes a long way—especially when little ones are involved.

SAFE & SOUND BY THE SEA

First things first: beach safety. The coast is a wonderful playground, but it’s important to stay aware of the risks. Many Lincolnshire beaches have lifeguard services during peak times—always swim between the red and yellow flags if they’re present, and explain to children what those flags mean.

Set clear boundaries on where children can go and make sure they know to come back to a set base (like your beach tent or a colourful windbreak) if they get separated. Bright swimsuits, hats or rash vests make it easier to

spot them in a crowd.

Watch the tides, too. Lincolnshire’s beaches are known for their wide tidal ranges, and the sea can come in faster than expected. It’s wise to check tide times before you go and be cautious of sandbanks that may cut you off.

Sun safety is also essential. You can apply a high-factor, child-friendly sunscreen before you arrive and top it up regularly, especially after splashing in the sea. Hats, sunglasses and a beach umbrella or shelter can help avoid overheating and sunburn.

WHAT TO PACK

THE FAMILY BEACH BAG CHECKLIST

You don’t need to bring the entire house, but a few well-chosen items will make the day smoother for everyone:

SUN PROTECTION: Factor 50 sunscreen, sun hats, UV-protective clothing.

BEACHWEAR: Swimsuits, goggles, water shoes or flip-flops.

TOWELS AND BLANKETS: Quick-dry towels and a large blanket or mat to sit on.

SNACKS AND DRINKS: Plenty of water, easy-to-eat snacks, maybe a cool box for lunch.

TOYS AND ENTERTAINMENT: Buckets, spades, a beach ball, a kite, or small games.

SPARE CLOTHES: For when everyone’s sandy, salty and ready for ice cream.

BABY WIPES AND BIN BAGS: For sticky hands and easy clean-up.

FIRST-AID BASICS: Plasters, antiseptic wipes, and anything your child might need (e.g. inhaler, allergy medication).

A COAST FULL OF CHARM

From donkey rides and arcades to quieter nature-filled dunes and paddling spots, Lincolnshire’s coast offers something for every family. The beaches are wide and clean, and many have promenades, cafés, and toilets close by—ideal for younger children.

Whether you’re planning a full day out or just a few hours of sandcastle-building, heading to the coast can be one of the highlights of the holidays. With a bit of prep and a relaxed attitude, the beach can be a place where everyone, big and small, has the freedom to play, explore and unwind.

So pack the bucket and spade, slap on the sunscreen, and head to the coast—it’s time to make the most of the sunshine.

“UNMISSABLE” SUMMER OPEN HOUSE

RETURNS

Harlaxton Manor’s Summer Open House is back by popular demand this August Bank Holiday Weekend

The historic Grade I listed Lincolnshire estate Harlaxton Manor will be opening to the public for a weekend-long summer celebration this August Bank Holiday.

On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, the renowned Harlaxton Manor will open its gates for a unique opportunity to allow the public to explore the Grade I listed building’s stunning formal gardens and its mesmerising interior.

With its incredible architecture, majestic gardens and interior design that is rich with both heritage and elegance, Harlaxton Manor is normally closed to the public, making this bank holiday opportunity all the more special.

Situated near the borders of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire just off the A1, the Manor will host live music from a classically trained pianist, as well as traditional funfilled games set on the dazzling grounds of Harlaxton Manor.

The one-of-a-kind building itself, which has featured in numerous TV and film productions, and which is also a spectacular wedding venue, weaves a combination of Elizabethan, Jacobean and Baroque architecture to create one of the most impressive landmark locations in the entire country.

Dr Holly Carter, Director and Dean of Harlaxton College said:

“We are so excited to bring back the Summer Open House at Harlaxton Manor this August Bank Holiday weekend, following the roaring success of last year’s event. It is sure to be an unmissable two days for all the family to enjoy, offering an exclusive opportunity to become immersed in the picturesque scenery of the estate.

“If it is history or the great outdoors that piques your interest, Harlaxton Manor offers something for everyone with its Summer Open House and Gardens, so get the picnics packed and enjoy a blissful day out under a truly memorable backdrop of one of Lincolnshire’s proudest historic landmarks. We will have gorgeous live music and light refreshments

available throughout the day, and we can’t wait to welcome you this August.”

Built in 1831 by businessman Gregory Gregory, Harlaxton Manor has had many different uses over the years, from a trench warfare and artillery school to an esteemed stately home, a retreat for the Society of Jesus, to the home of an eccentric, seance-hosting businesswoman who saved the building from demolition. Its present day use is that of a British campus for the American University of Evansville, known as Harlaxton College.

With free car parking, tickets to Harlaxton Manor’s Summer Open House start from just £8.50. Entry is £15 per adult, £8.50 for children and £13 for concessions, with family tickets (for two adults and three children) available for £40, under 2s are complimentary.

SUN-KISSED BEAUTY

SKINCARE TIPS FOR POST - SUN REPAIR AND GLOWING SUMMER MAKEUP

After days of sunshine and sea breezes, your skin may be showing signs of summer living – a little dryness, a few freckles, perhaps even a touch of sunburn. But with the right routine, you can restore, soothe and celebrate your sun-kissed complexion.

REPAIR AND REPLENISH

Even if you’ve been diligent with sunscreen, sun exposure can leave the skin feeling dehydrated and tired. Start your post-sun recovery with a gentle cleanser –nothing foaming or stripping – followed by a hydrating toner or essence to help restore your skin’s moisture barrier.

Look for ingredients like aloe vera, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E. These help calm inflammation, plump the skin, and protect against environmental damage. If you’ve caught a bit too much sun, an after-sun gel or overnight mask with aloe or calendula can work wonders.

A light exfoliation, once or twice a week (such as enzyme masks or mild acids), will brighten dull skin and help your serums sink in more effectively. However, skip this step if your skin feels sensitive or sore.

HYDRATION IS KEY

Summer skin craves moisture, but not heaviness. Swap thick winter creams for gel-based moisturisers or water creams that hydrate without clogging pores. A spritz of face mist throughout the day can keep your skin feeling fresh, especially on warm days.

And don’t forget your lips – the sun can chap them quickly. Keep a balm with SPF in your bag and apply regularly.

MAKEUP THAT GLOWS, NOT MELTS

When it comes to summer makeup, less really is more. Let your healthy skin shine through by using a lightweight tinted moisturiser or BB cream instead of full-coverage foundation. Add a few dabs of cream blush for a natural flush and finish with a liquid highlighter across the cheekbones for that sun-kissed glow.

Waterproof mascara, a slick of tinted brow gel, and a swipe of peach or coral lip tint can pull your whole look together without overwhelming the skin.

SPF ALWAYS

Even post-holiday, SPF remains nonnegotiable. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and make

it part of your morning routine. Many modern formulas double as primers or moisturisers, making them an easy final step before makeup.

SHOP LOCAL, SHOP LINCOLNSHIRE

From lightweight clothing and practical accessories to simple home décor and outdoor touches, August is a great time to make the most of the final weeks of summer – and Lincolnshire’s shops have plenty to offer.

Whether you’re preparing for the new school term, updating your wardrobe, or adding a few seasonal touches to your home or garden, there’s no need to travel far.

High streets, market towns, and shopping precincts across the county offer a mix of big names and independent stores. With more people choosing to shop local, many of these areas now have a good balance of everyday essentials and more individual finds. August outfits are all about comfort and versatility – ideal for warm days that can turn cooler. Look out for cotton dresses, linen shirts, and easy-fit trousers in soft, neutral tones. Many local fashion shops stock independent labels, and some offer one-off pieces you won’t find online or on the high street. Accessories are practical too – roomy bags for day trips, sun hats, and lightweight jewellery to finish off your look. If you’re planning a break or simply want to enjoy the weather while it lasts, now is a good time to refresh your wardrobe.

With September approaching, there are also plenty of chances to pick up useful items such as school bags, lunch boxes, and outerwear. Several small shops in the region focus on well-made children’s clothing and durable accessories. For the home, look out for items like tableware, plant pots, candles, and throws in colours that will carry through into autumn. Local gift and home shops are a great place to find something a bit different – especially if you’re after a housewarming present or a small update to your living space.

August weekends often bring markets, food stalls, and pop-up events to towns and retail courtyards across Lincolnshire. It’s a relaxed way to explore what’s on offer – and a good excuse to pause for a coffee or slice of cake at one of the many cafés while you’re out and about. If you’re in Lincoln, it’s worth taking time to visit The Little Red Gallery, which features a mix of original art and prints. Whether you’re browsing or buying, it’s a calm and welcoming space to enjoy.

Late summer is also a great time to be more thoughtful about what you buy. Choosing local makers, investing in quality, and avoiding impulse purchases can help you find things that last and suit your lifestyle. So, whether you’re calling in at a favourite independent or discovering somewhere new, there’s still plenty to enjoy on the local shopping scene this August – and often just around the corner.

eye-light®

O’Brien’s newly acquired eye-light® system is the latest thoroughly researched treatment for Dry Age-related Macular Disease

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the developed world. It predominantly affects individuals aged 60 and above. Estimates suggest that nearly 50 million people worldwide are affected by AMD. AMD is a

progressive eye disease that irreversibly impairs vision by damaging part of the retina, the light-sensitive area at the back of the eye. It is characterised by the gradual accumulation of drusen—tiny yellow or white deposits under the retina. Your optometrist can see the drusen when closely examining your eyes.

The eye-light uses yellow light (590 nm wavelength) which naturally inhibits the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This signalling protein stimulates the formation of blood vessels, which contributes to the development of the wet form of AMD.

The eye-light uses red light (630nm wavelength) to promote electron transfer and oxygen binding, restoring mitochondrial function and increasing metabolic activity (i.e. energy production) and inhibiting inflammatory events and cell death.

If you have Dry AMD, please get in touch with our team to learn all about our eye-light and Valeda treatments. You can phone us or you can call in to book an early appointment or a preliminary consultation.

In 2022, O’Brien’s began to use Valeda light therapy for the treatment of Dry Age-related Macular Disease (Dry AMD). The system rapidly proved its worth, and many of our treated patients have been in touch to let us know how much their day-to-day lives have been enhanced.

Do you suffer from Dry Age-related Macular Disease?

Having treated Dry Age-related Macular Disease since 2022, O’Brien’s have become specialists in improving the sight of sufferers.

In addition to our well established Valeda therapy, we can now offer the new eye-light® therapy. Both therapies have been shown to improve sharpness of vision and to slow down the progression of the disease.

HOME PROJECTS THAT ADD VALUE THIS SUMMER

With summer in full swing, August is an ideal time to refresh your interiors. Add warmth, charm and function with a mix of classic touches and clever upgrades that last all year.

As the days begin to shorten, now’s the perfect moment to plan and give your home a seasonal boost. Replacing tired windows, for example, doesn’t just improve insulation, it can completely transform the look and feel of your space. Modern designs in uPVC, aluminium or composite offer excellent energy efficiency and come in styles to suit both period and modern homes. Slim frames, heritage colours and sash-style options keep the character, while delivering comfort and quiet.

But it’s not just windows that can lift your home’s appeal. Many homeowners are also taking the opportunity to renovate their kitchens - not just updating worktops and cabinets, but rethinking the entire layout. From knocking through to create open-plan living, to reconfiguring small spaces with smart storage, the possibilities are vast.

Specialist kitchen companies now offer full project management, from planning and structural changes to final finishes, making the process smoother and less stressful.

And August is an ideal time to take on a kitchen renovation. With warm weather on your side, outdoor cooking becomes easy, whether it’s a barbecue, pizza oven or simple camp stove on the patio. It means you can still enjoy relaxed summer meals while the heart of your home gets a fresh start indoors. Plus, larger renovations like this often add real value to your property, especially when done to a high standard.

If you’re investing in improvements, consider pairing a kitchen upgrade with new doors or bifolds to the garden. These additions bring in more light, create

better flow, and turn everyday routines into something a little more special. Whether you’re entertaining friends or just enjoying breakfast in the sun, these details make all the difference.

As summer begins to wind down, it’s also a good time to get smaller maintenance jobs out of the way like repainting the front door, trimming hedges, or clearing out cupboards ready for autumn routines. Tackle what you can now, while the days are still long and dry, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Homes that combine thoughtful upgrades with day-to-day comfort often feel the most rewarding. Whether it’s a brand-new kitchen, a change of windows, or simply decluttering the hallway, August is a chance to refresh your space and enjoy the process while the sun’s still shining.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATERING KEEPING YOUR GARDEN THRIVING THIS SUMMER

As summer arrives with its warm, sunny days, many of us find ourselves spending more time outdoors. While this is a wonderful season for us, it can be one of the most challenging times of year for our gardens. Higher temperatures, longer daylight hours, and dry spells put added stress on plants, making proper watering more important than ever.

During hot weather, moisture evaporates quickly from the soil, and plants lose water faster through their leaves. Without consistent and effective watering, even the healthiest plants can begin to suffer. Wilting, stunted growth, and, in the worst cases, the loss of cherished flowers or shrubs are all risks when the soil dries out. But with a little care and planning, you can help your garden not only survive but flourish in the summer heat.

One of the most important tips for summer watering is choosing the right time of day. Early morning and late evening are ideal because the sun is lower, and temperatures are cooler. This means more of the water will soak into the soil where it’s needed, rather than evaporating in the heat. Watering during these cooler times also reduces the risk of leaf scorch, which can happen when water droplets act like magnifying glasses under intense midday sun.

Not every part of your garden will need the same amount of attention. Some plants are far more vulnerable to dry conditions: Young plants and seedlings – With shallow root systems, they’re particularly susceptible

to drying out and may need daily checks.

Newly planted shrubs and perennials –These haven’t yet established deep roots and will benefit from consistent watering to help them settle in.

Vegetable gardens and hanging baskets –Both are highly prone to moisture loss and can require more frequent watering than established beds.

Established trees and shrubs – While they’re more resilient, they’ll still benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells to keep roots hydrated.

Don’t panic if your grass turns brown in the heat. This is a natural defence mechanism, and most lawns bounce back quickly when cooler, wetter weather returns.

For more sustainable watering, water deeply and less often. A thorough soaking encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, making plants more drought tolerant. Shallow, frequent watering, on the other hand, leads to weaker, surface-level roots.

Adding a layer of mulch around plants helps lock in moisture, keeps roots cool, and even suppresses weeds that compete for water. Installing a water butt is an easy way to make your watering routine more eco-friendly. Rainwater is not only free but also softer and better for plants than mains water.

By giving your garden, the right care and attention during the hottest months, you’ll keep it lush, colourful, and productive –ready to be enjoyed all season long, and build a stronger, more sustainable garden for years to come.

LATE SUMMER GARDEN JOBS

WHAT TO PLANT, PRUNE, AND PREP FOR

AUTUMN

As August winds down and the sun begins to soften, your garden enters a transitional phase. Late summer is a valuable time to reflect on the season’s successes and prepare for the changes ahead. Whether you have a large plot or a compact patio garden, there are plenty of rewarding tasks to keep your green space flourishing well into autumn.

WHAT TO PRUNE

Late summer is the ideal moment to tidy up and encourage a final burst of colour. Begin by deadheading spent blooms on flowering perennials like roses, dahlias, and cosmos to prolong their display. Removing faded flowers redirects energy back into the plant, encouraging fresh growth and, in some cases, additional blooms.

Lavender is also best pruned now. Trim it back gently – taking care not to cut into the woody stems – to keep the shape compact and stimulate next year’s flowering. Similarly, wisteria can be cut back in August by shortening this year’s long whippy shoots to about five or six leaves from the main stem. This not only

tames the plant but also improves flowering for next spring.

WHAT TO PLANT

Believe it or not, August is a great time to sow and plant for late autumn colour and next spring’s bounty.

Start with biennials such as wallflowers, foxgloves, and sweet williams. Sowing them now gives them enough time to establish before the colder months set in, ensuring they bloom beautifully next year.

You can also plant autumn-flowering bulbs like nerines and colchicums for a surprise splash of colour just as other plants begin to fade. And if you’re planning ahead, it’s not too early to order and plant springflowering bulbs such as daffodils and crocuses – especially if you want an early display.

For those with a kitchen garden, now is the time to sow hardy salad leaves like mizuna, lamb’s lettuce,

and rocket, as well as turnips, radishes, and spring onions for harvesting into autumn. August is also a perfect time to plant kale, winter cabbages, and leeks if you haven’t already.

PREP FOR THE SEASON AHEAD

Take some time to review your garden’s overall health. Look for signs of disease or pest problems and remove any affected foliage promptly to prevent spread.

Mulching borders with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure will help lock in moisture and improve soil structure ahead of the colder months.

Now is also a good time to lift and divide overcrowded perennials, such as hostas or daylilies. Doing this not only rejuvenates the plants but gives you more to spread across your garden or share with friends.

Lastly, give your tools a clean and sharpen – secateurs, hoes, and shears will all benefit. Well-maintained tools make the coming months’ tasks quicker and easier.

With a little effort now, your garden will stay attractive through late summer and be well prepared for a dazzling spring revival.

SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE

THROUGH THE WARMER MONTHS

August brings with it long, sunny days, blooming gardens and the chance to spend more time outdoors. For many older people whether living in a care home, receiving help at home, or managing on their own, this time of year can be a joy, but it also brings its own set of challenges.

Staying comfortable and safe in the heat is important. Older adults can be more vulnerable to dehydration and overheating, so little things like keeping a cool drink nearby, avoiding the midday sun, and wearing light clothing can make a big difference. Family members and carers often keep a closer eye on routines, encouraging regular drinks, lighter meals, and plenty of rest in the shade.

In care homes, brighter weather often brings more opportunities for connection. Many homes make the most of their outdoor spaces, offering gentle activities like seated exercise, afternoon tea on the patio, or a spot of gardening. It’s not just about keeping busy—it’s about feeling part of something, enjoying fresh air, and

sharing moments with others. These kinds of simple pleasures can lift the spirits.

For those who live in their own homes, the season brings a chance to enjoy independence with a little support. In-home care offers flexibility—maybe just a helping hand with meals, a bit of companionship, or more regular assistance with day-to-day tasks. With mobility aids like walking frames, scooters or stairlifts, getting out and about becomes much easier, whether it’s popping to a local park or joining a community group.

Mobility plays such an important role in staying active and connected. It doesn’t have to mean going far—just being able to move around the home safely, or get out into the garden, can boost confidence and wellbeing. Gentle stretches, walking clubs, or even chairbased exercises can help keep joints moving and spirits high.

For those living with dementia, this time of

year can be both calming and confusing. Familiar outdoor spaces, music, or scents from the garden can stir comforting memories. But too much heat or a change in routine can sometimes feel overwhelming. A steady rhythm to the day, a quiet corner in the shade, or favourite music playing softly in the background can all make a big difference.

Here in Lincolnshire and beyond, there’s growing awareness of how important it is to support older people in ways that suit their individual needs—whether that’s within a care home or in their familiar surroundings. With the right support, the season can be one to truly enjoy.

So as the days stay long and light, let’s remember to look out for the older people in our lives—offering a little help where needed, and always making time to share a smile, a story, or a cuppa in the garden.

GET STAYCATION READY

LOCAL CAR RETAILER SHARES FIVE SIMPLE CHECKS DRIVERS NEED TO MAKE BEFORE SETTING OFF ON A LONG JOURNEY

Domestic travel is on the rise, with 28% of Brits planning a long-stay holiday within the UK this year, while 33% are opting for a weekend away*

To help road users stay safe, a Lincoln car retailer is offering its top tips for drivers to ensure their cars are holiday-ready.

Andy McInnes, Business Manager at Stoneacre Lincoln, on Lincoln Fields, said: “When planning a staycation, one essential detail often gets overlooked – the car.

“It’s vital to check whether your car is fit for a long journey and ensure you have all the essentials to avoid any unpleasant surprises.”

CHECK THE CONDITION OF YOUR CAR

“No matter how far you’re travelling, it’s important to check the condition of your car regularly. It may seem like common sense, but make sure you have enough fuel, that the oil and coolant levels are topped up, your tyres are properly inflated, and all the electrics are functioning. If you’re driving a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle, ensure it is sufficiently charged for the journey.

“Packing a locking wheel nut key is essential, as it is used to secure your car’s wheels and prevent theft. Store it in a safe, accessible place – without it, even basic maintenance like changing a tyre can become difficult.

“Make sure to test your car’s lights and replace any bulbs that aren’t working. This is especially important if you’ll be driving early in the morning or at night, when visibility is reduced.”

PACK THE ESSENTIALS

“Having a sat-nav system on hand can help you avoid unexpected detours. It’s especially useful when navigating unfamiliar areas, providing real-time updates on speed limits, traffic and nearby service stations.

“Also, double-check you have the correct contact details for any breakdown services you’re covered by, along with car insurance documents. In case of a breakdown, having a set of jump leads will be a lifesaver if your car battery goes flat.”

TEST THE BATTERY

“It’s wise to check your car battery, as temperature changes – especially in the summer – can significantly affect its performance. Hot weather can accelerate battery degradation by trapping heat under the bonnet, causing the liquid inside to evaporate more quickly and potentially leading to a flat battery.

“Car batteries typically last between three and five years. To avoid a breakdown, it’s essential to check your battery’s condition, especially if your car is a few years old and regularly exposed to intense summer heat.”

CHECK THE AIR CONDITIONING

“Picking a safe route to your destination is often overlooked. Instead of focusing solely on saving a few extra minutes, prioritise a journey that’s safe,

comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. “Air conditioning plays a critical role in keeping you and your passengers cool whilst travelling. Before setting off, test the system by running the engine and listening for any knocking or rumbling sounds – these could indicate a fault. If the air being blown out isn’t cold, it’s best to have the system checked by a specialist.”

AVOID A SUNBURNT CAR

“Finally, just like our skin, your car’s paint can suffer from sun damage. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause oxidation, leading to fading, discolouration and peeling.

“To protect your car and keep it looking its best, try to park in the shade whenever possible and consider using a car cover during the hottest months. Regularly washing your car and applying a high-quality wax can also help shield the paint from UV damage.”
