Greetings from the Editor
Kia ora whānau
Spring is here and it is a wonderful time to celebrate our district. There are plenty of events, exhibitions and shows to check out in this edition of Chatter, so whip out your calendars and support local artists, musicians and theatre groups.
September is also a time to celebrate significant weeks as a country. One of those is National Welcoming Week (5–14 September). Welcoming Week is an opportunity to celebrate diversity and those things that unite us. On 12 September we will host a Newcomer Safety Expo to connect newcomers with our local emergency services and provide information on how to keep safe and be prepared, Kiwi style. Join us at MainPower Stadium and meet the local heroes keeping us safe, and to pick up safety tips when in the outdoors or in an emergency. Find out more in this issue.
We have been celebrating diverse cuisines with Multicultural Cooking Classes run by the social group GLOW (Global Locals of Waimakariri). These will continue Wednesdays until 10 September.
At this time of year we look forward to welcoming back migratory birds (like the wrybill who only breed in South Island braided rivers) to our waterways, which ties in well with National Conservation Week 1-7 September. It is a good time to join a local environmental group or take part in planting days and help take care of our special environment.
In September we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) 14–20 September. Head to your library for activities and a large collection of resources to support your reo journey. The libraries will also have many activities on offer for the school holidays too, so check out their website for what’s on.
This spring, go out and support local art, smile at a new neighbour, learn a new dish, look out for a wrybill and celebrate being a Welcoming Waimakariri with a hearty Nau Mai! Haere Mai!

Spring planting surge planned thanks to surprise community support
Can you feel it? Spring — just round the corner! We’re usually excited at this time of the year, but September this year is shaping up to be an extra big month for planting. We’ll wrap up the installation of plant guards around Tutaepatu Lagoon and then we’ll be kicking off new planting efforts on Kaitiritiri Ridge in Pegasus.
We can plan so much thanks to some incredible community support: First, a generous donation of native plants from a Leithfield resident. The people of Canterbury continue to amaze us with their generosity and community spirit!
Secondly, we’re thrilled to have also received not just one but three grants! One from the MainPower Biodiversity Fund, one from Waimakariri District Council and another from COGS (Community Organisation Grants Scheme) — all to support our planting efforts and purchase essential tools.
Thirdly, our region is simply blessed to have businesses like Riverside Plant Nursery, Southern Woods Plant Nursery, Advance Landscape Systems, and Wai-ora in its midst. We can never thank them enough for their ongoing support of our park projects.
A huge thank you to all for giving us a boost just when it’s needed at Springtime!
Volunteers - You make the world go round!
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Mahinga Kai Huria Reserve planting day — it was a brilliant event with many trees planted and fantastic community energy.
Over August, Kaiapoi High School also brought out 140 students to help with planting and pest plant control on Kaitiritiri Ridge — an incredible effort that’s made a real impact. Noaia and ComCol students have also been busy volunteering in the park, getting trees in the ground and learning about successional planting from our Biodiversity and Community Ranger, Chris.
This is what gives us faith our 200 year vision will be realised for Te Kohaka o Tūhaitara: young people engaging with nature here and learning about its conservation.
A special shout-out to our dedicated volunteers trapping in the park, especially Russell, who has been restoring our old DOC 200 traps and getting them back in working order — thank you, Russell!
Research - Helping us understand our environment and sustain its species
Over August we also had the pleasure of joining Emily and Caleb from Fish & Game for their annual bird survey, focusing on kuruwhengi (Australasian shoveler). A big thank you to them for welcoming our University of Canterbury GEOG309 students — Chloe, Josh, Polly, Emma, and Siobhan — to participate.
The students are studying the relationship between plant species and bird distribution, and this was a fantastic opportunity to observe spatial patterns of bird species around the park. During the survey, they identified kuruwhengi, pūteketeke (crested grebes), and kuihi (Canadian geese), among others — a wonderful mix of species on the lagoon!

Mental Health Awareness Week — 6–12 October 2025
This year, Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) has been aligned with the nationwide wellbeing campaign Top Up. The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 is Top Up Together, encouraging you to connect with others as you bring the Five Ways to Wellbeing into your daily life. This year, we’re shining a light on the collective aspect of the Top Up campaign, as recent research shows that a shared, community-based approach to wellbeing delivers the most sustained, long-term benefits. Social connection is crucial for our wellbeing. It brings purpose and a sense of belonging to our lives, helps us feel valued, and makes us happier and more secure. Evidence shows that activities involving social interaction matter — actions like volunteering, shared learning, physical activity, cultural practices, and community events consistently have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Look after your oranga by topping up together with the Five Ways to Wellbeing this Mental Health Awareness Week: Me aro tonu/Take Notice. Tukua/Give. Me kori tonu/Be Active. Me whakawhanaunga/Connect. Me ako tonu/Keep Learning.

Good in the Hood!
2025 marks a special milestone for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, our centenary year supporting tamariki and their whānau across Christchurch and Canterbury. For 100 years, we have provided safe, nurturing respite care, helping children build confidence, life skills, and resilience when families need it most.
You can help us celebrate this milestone and continue our vital work through Z Energy’s Good in the Hood initiative at the Belfast service station. Voting is open from 26 August to 21 September. Customers vote with orange tokens to decide how $5,000 in funding is shared among local community groups. Every token counts.
Between 1 July 2022 and 31 December 2024, Cholmondeley supported 1,028 children across Canterbury, including 109 tamariki in the Waimakariri District. Funding from Good in the Hood will help us maintain trauma-informed care, fun activities, and safe spaces for children to just enjoy being kids.
As we celebrate 100 years of making a difference, we would love your support. Next time you fuel up at Belfast Z, drop your orange token in Cholmondeley’s slot and help us keep changing the lives of local children and families for the next 100 years.

The “I Can’t Wait” card: one small card, one big difference
Written by Belinda Brown, CEO, Crohn’s and Colitis New Zealand Charitable Trust (CCNZ)
Crohn’s and Colitis New Zealand’s “I Can’t Wait” card helps people with medical conditions access toilets when they urgently need them. Offered free of charge, the card provides a discreet way to request access without needing to explain personal health details.
A survey conducted by CCNZ in partnership with Ostomy New Zealand revealed:
• Over 90% said they’ve felt afraid to leave home due to fear of having an accident.
• 87.5% believed that having access to staff toilets would improve their lifestyle — with more than half saying it would have a major impact.
• Over 40% had been denied toilet access in an emergency, most often because the facility was “for staff use only.”
To address this, CCNZ launched the “I Can’t Wait” campaign — inviting businesses, retailers and other publicfacing organisations to display a sticker

in their window showing they recognise and support cardholders by allowing them to access their bathrooms. This simple act gives people the confidence to shop, socialise, and live life without fear or shame.

Want to apply for a card or join the campaign?
Email info@crohnsandcolitis.org.nz or visit our website to learn more.
Participating locations are listed on CCNZ’s website.

Media Release - Environment Canterbury
8 August 2025
Let’s clear the air on outdoor burning rules
Environment Canterbury is reminding residents across Waitaha Canterbury to follow the rules around outdoor burning, with the regional council responding to hundreds of complaints across the region every year. There have been eight complaints received in the Waimakariri district in July alone.
As the weather warms and spring approaches, many people start preparing to burn garden or crop waste. But burning without understanding the rules can cause issues for neighbours, worsen air quality, and lead to enforcement action or fines.
Steps for planning an outdoor burn
1. Consider other options such as composting, mulching or recycling.
2. Identify your property size: under or over 2 hectares.
3. If you’re in a Clean Air Zone, check seasonal restrictions.
4. Check the fire season status at checkitsalright.nz
5. If your burning is in the hill and high country, check the requirements for prior notification and specific conditions.
6. If burning is allowed, make sure you follow the rules around distance, dryness, timing, material and accelerant.
7. Resource consent may be required for outdoor burning that doesn’t comply with the rules.
Who can burn – and what you can burn
• Properties under two hectares (20,000 m²):
Outdoor burning is not allowed, even in rural areas. That means no garden waste and no backyard fires. The only exception: outdoor cooking like BBQs, pizza ovens, hāngī or umu – and even then, you must ensure the smoke does not travel beyond your property boundary. Breaking this rule can lead to a fine and enforcement costs.
• Properties over two hectares:
You may burn dry vegetation, paper, cardboard, and untreated wood from your own land or a neighbouring property. All burning must meet specific conditions.
Seasonal restrictions in Clean Air Zones
If your property is in a Clean Air Zone where there are stricter air quality rules — such as Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate, or Geraldine — burning is only permitted during the warmer months, specifically from 1 September to 30 April.
Outdoor burning is not permitted outside of these dates.
Always check fire season status
Environment Canterbury rules sit alongside Fire & Emergency New Zealand’s fire seasons and permit requirements. Before lighting any outdoor fire, head to checkitsalright.nz to see if your fire is allowed on that day. Even if permitted under our rules, it may still be restricted under fire season conditions.
Safe burning tips
There are some great alternatives to burning, including mulching or composting, using kerbside green bins or taking waste to your local transfer station. Farm plastics can be recycled via Plasback or AgRecovery.
If you meet the burning rules and choose to burn:
• Use ideal weather – cloudy days and light winds help disperse smoke.
• Burn smaller piles that are well-aerated for cleaner, faster burning.
• Don’t burn stumps with dirt — dirt can create poor airflow, leading to inefficient, smoky fires.
• Finish burning before nightfall — cool air traps smoke close to the ground.
• Fully extinguish the fire afterward — spread ash, douse with water, don’t assume it’s out.
What to do if smoke’s causing a problem
If you see smoke beyond what’s expected, please report it.
Use the 24-hour Environment Canterbury incident line 0800 765 588 or our other reporting options so Environment Canterbury can investigate.

Services and Programmes
Operating Hours
Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm.
We’re all connected

That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about and get help with any issue that’s of concern.
The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. Our trained volunteers research options specific to each client’s situation and then explains these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next.
Our bureau has an extensive database of local and national information at our fingertips, which is updated regularly, along with pamphlets and booklets.
We run free clinics
We offer a range of free clinics for CAB clients on Wednesdays, rotating on a fortnightly basis. They are all by appointment only except for Budgeting which is an appointment and drop-in clinic:
• Budgeting
• Employment
• Immigration
• Legal Information
We also offer a free legal clinic run by Community Law Canterbury weekly on Monday mornings, and once a month Beneficiary Advisory Services offers a free clinic on a Monday afternoon. Bookings are essential for both clinics.
Please contact us for more information about the times and dates of any of the clinics.
Get in touch
Do come and see us. We’re trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or once a fortnight at Amberley Library (check with us for dates), or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email: northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

In the event that something unexpected happens to you, your next of kin need to be aware of your wishes and how best to manage your affairs. It is important to have documents, policies and relevant information up to date and stored together, in a safe place. In times of stress, your loved ones and next of kin would find it helpful if they knew where to find these documents e.g. in the safe, with the lawyer etc.

• Copy of the Power of Attorney
• Copy of your Birth and Marriage/Civil Union Certificate
• Advanced care plan
• Pre-arranged funeral arrangements

Organizations have until April 2026 to re-register as an incorporated society. This could mean updating your constitution, membership rules and governance requirements.

Oxford Library: Wednesday 15 October 12–2pm
Kaiapoi Library: Thursday 23 October 4–6pm

Alert: Is your group an incorporated society ?
If so, have you updated your constitution and re-registered yet? If not –these workshops may help!
A new Incorporated Societies Act was passed in 2022. This new Act requires all incorporated societies to update their constitutions and apply to re-register by early April 2026, if they want to keep being an incorporated society. Groups who don't re-register will run into problems applying for funding, keeping their assets and protecting their Committee members from personal liability. Community Law Canterbury is running some workshops to help groups learn more about these new laws and to learn how to update their constitutions.
Trying to sort out your group’s constitution?
If you are using the Registrar’s free Constitution Builder Tool to update your constitution, and you've got some questions, you are welcome to come along to one of our Constitution Builder Tool workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 08 September , and will be repeated on Saturday 18 October
Wondering about what you need to do differently after you've re-registered?
There are a few things your group will need to do differently once you’ve finished reregistering. This workshop will cover what you need to do to keep you group on track once you have re-registered including keeping interests registers, reporting on interests at your AGM, officer certification paperwork etc. We'll help you with the paperwork needed to stay on the right side of the law. The next one of these is at lunchtime on Monday 08 September
Want to know more? Interested in booking?
These workshops are open to local groups. Any two Committee members can attend, provided that those Committee members are not lawyers, accountants or paid advisors to the sector. Bookings can be made by emailing communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz.

Comcol’s new LEAP Course
Our new LEAP course has kickstarted with a bang! Students are already making great strides in both horticulture and work readiness skills. They’ve been getting their hands dirtyplanting trees, growing veggies, and caring for gardens - while also gaining valuable knowledge about workplace safety, plant identification, and healthy eating.
The focus on practical, hands-on learning has been a real hit. Students have been building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in future employment. We have been providing our youth with a sense of achievement and success that they can carry with them throughout the rest of their lives.
An important part of the course so far has been the immersion within the local community. The students have helped to plant trees with the Tūhaitara Trust, visited the extensive nursery at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and learnt all about waste with t he brilliant team at EcoEducate. These experiences not only build environmental awareness skills but also foster pride and belonging while contributing to something bigger than themselves.
With such a promising start, we’re excited to see the skills, confidence, and community spirit of our LEAP students continue to grow in the weeks ahead.
