Winter Greetings!

Greetings from the Editor

The cold starts to the day are certainly a reminder that winter has arrived and the bright sunny days that follow the redeeming feature of this time of year. If winter is not your favourite, remember that this month brings the shortest day and turning the corner back toward summer. We celebrate the King’s Birthday (2 June) and Matariki (20 June), both great reasons to fill your cup by doing something you love and to come together with family and friends over kai, remember loved ones and look forward to the future. See inside this edition for upcoming events celebrating Matariki.

If winter brings extra challenges for you or someone you know, remember there is a wealth of support available in our community. The Next Steps website is a great way to start looking for this help, whether it’s food, connection to others or budgeting support.

On 25 and 26 June the Community Team and partner organisations host the inaugural “Stronger Communities” conference. This event offers a chance for people working in social services and those volunteering in our community, to come together and learn new tools and skills.

There are an amazing array of presentations from experts in their field, that can equip you with new strategies to support those in need. Check out the link to the programme and registration information inside Chatter. Also on offer this month, the next event in the ‘On Track’ series - Get your Meetings On Track! We invite Not for Profit Organisations and community groups to join our workshop, on either 25 or 27 June, to learn how to make meetings more productive and worthwhile.

Stacking: A Fresh Twist in Floral Art

At the May meeting of the North Canterbury Floral Art Group, members were introduced to stacking—a dynamic floral design technique that blends layering with tufting for striking effect. Stacking involves building a design in structured layers, with tufted clusters of flowers or foliage inserted between or atop these layers. The result is a sculptural arrangement rich in texture, depth, and movement.

Our demonstrator began with a base of upright branches, then added wide foliage and linear materials in clear layers. Into this framework, she placed compact tufts of colour, and native greenery, which created contrast and rhythm within the design.

Compass FM

In the heart of North Canterbury, where rolling hills meet vibrant townships, exists the "Voices of North Canterbury" helping to bind the community together—Compass FM 104.9 and 103.7 FM in the Hurunui.

Since 2011, this beloved community radio station has been more than just a source of music and entertainment; it has been the pulse of the region, connecting people, sharing stories, and amplifying local voices, by providing a platform for local organisations, charities, and businesses, ensuring their messages reach the people who need to hear them.

Listeners tune in daily for a diverse mix of music, spanning decades and genres, catering to every mood and moment—whether it's powering through a workday, unwinding on the weekend, or enjoying an evening of nostalgia.

If you would like your not for profit, group, charity some free exposure on your community radio, feel free to send us an email managercompassfm@gmail.com

The beauty of stacking lies in its balance of control and creativity. Each component is deliberately placed, yet the final look feels natural and flowing. The technique suits a variety of formats—from table arrangements to large-scale displays—and encourages the use of diverse textures and forms.

Members appreciated the versatility of this modern style and how it encourages closer attention to detail. Many were inspired to try it in their own work, using seasonal materials and local foliage.

This demonstration was a wonderful reminder of the creative energy within our group and the joy of exploring new techniques together. Whether you’re a seasoned arranger or just starting out, stacking offers an exciting way to bring depth and drama to your floral designs.

If you are interested in exploring floral design, get in touch with Sharon on 027 648 6998, or Shelley on 021 124 9016 — we’d love to welcome you to the group!

Autumn Gardening Tips:

From Flowers to Potted Citrus

As autumn settles in, it's the perfect time to get your garden ready for the cooler months. Whether you're enhancing the colour of your hydrangeas or starting new flower seeds, autumn offers opportunities to nurture a thriving garden.

Hydrangea Care and Colouring

The drying heads of hydrangeas serve as a reminder to start your monthly applications of Blueing Liquid Aluminium Sulphate or Pinking Liquid Lime Dolomite. These products adjust the soil's pH and help intensify flower colours for the summer. You can leave the dry heads on the plants through winter or prune them back just above two healthy leaf buds.

Chrysanthemums: Autumn and Mother's Day

Chrysanthemums are not only a classic Mother’s Day flower but also symbolise happiness and longevity in Japan.

Potted chrysanthemums make a great gift, while garden varieties add vibrant colour to your beds. Place potted chrysanthemums in a sunny indoor spot, water every few days, and feed with liquid fertiliser. Once the flowers fade, plant them outside in a sunny, well-drained spot.

Winter and Spring Flowers to Sow

Sow hardy flowers this autumn to bring vibrant blooms in winter and spring. Sweet Alyssum, Forget-Me-Not, and Iceland Poppy are perfect for direct sowing, while

Pansies, Calendulas, and Sweet Peas add lovely colour. Calendulas, in particular, attract bees and beneficial insects. Protect young seedlings from snails and slugs with appropriate pellets, and feed with a liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.

Caring for Potted Citrus

Potted citrus trees, such as dwarf varieties, thrive in sunny spots and well-drained pots. Use a good-quality potting mix and ensure proper drainage. Water regularly, feed with seaweed tonic, and use potassium-rich fertilisers to enhance fruit production. Keep an eye out for scale insects and control infestations with an appropriate spray.

With these tips, your autumn garden will flourish, providing beauty and productivity through the cooler months.

Autumn is a time of great activity in the pest animal world. Rats and mice in particular have been breeding all summer and are reaching their peak numbers. Our trapping records show that the highest number of these pests are caught around now.

It’s also a time when rats and mice are looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter and can end up sharing your house with you. So, before this happens, get your traps set. Having traps set outside the house (in protective boxes so you don’t catch birds or pets or small fingers) can mean you catch them before they come inside.

The trapping Pest Free Waimakariri and trapping groups do is generally in reserves and natural habitats. This makes it possible for our native wildlife to flourish where it would otherwise be declining. But the trapping you do to protect your home also contributes to the wildlife picture. Birds like the tui can happily live alongside us in town. If you live near a reserve or natural area the effect you can have is even greater.

If you trap at your place and would like to connect with the wider area and know what’s going on, please contact us.

PFW puts out a monthly newsletter where you can see the big picture of what’s being caught and what other people are doing. We can also provide advice and resources to help with your conservation efforts. Contact us at: pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for our latest newsletter.

Flood protection project accelerated with funding from central Government

An Environment Canterbury project to strengthen flood protection infrastructure in Kaiapoi started last month.

The work, to bolster the stopbank along Raven Quay, is one of three projects in Canterbury selected for central government co-investment through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF).

The $3 million Regional Structure Upgrade and Adaptation Programme, which includes sites across the region, has received a $1.8 million grant from the RIF and is being cofunded with $1.2 million from Environment Canterbury.

Improving flood protection in Kaiapoi

The project is being done in stages. The first focused on removing trees from the Murphy Park side of the stopbank and the next stage will focus on removing trees on the river side of the stopbank, downstream of the Mandeville footbridge.

"We maintain stopbanks so there is no bare soil, no holes or ruts. This means they can do their job and protect the community during a flood event,” said Fred Brooks, Environment Canterbury Area Engineer (Waimakariri).

“Trees growing in stopbanks pose a risk because if they’re knocked over, they leave holes where the roots used to be, or if a tree gets sick and dies, its roots can rot and leave empty spaces in the bank.”

“While we have to remove some trees, we've adapted our designs to preserve the trees on the roadside, aiming to strike a balance between critical flood protection and respecting the area's character.”

In phase two, scheduled for early 2026, the stumps will be removed and the stopbank rebuilt. In phase three, scheduled for mid-2026, Environment Canterbury will replant appropriate trees/plants the recommended distance from the stopbank.

The work will involve some temporary disruptions, including construction noise and limited access to certain areas. There will be signage on site and alternative routes will be provided where possible.

Waimakariri District Council is working closely with Environment Canterbury to coordinate work with any proposed development nearby.

Visitors are welcome

We were proud to host The BIG Breakfast Fundraiser in May - a sold-out event that brought our community together in support of youth mentoring.

Guests were treated to a delicious breakfast from Urban Revival, a heartfelt and humorous keynote from Pic Picot of Pic’s Peanut Butter, and a moving story from ‘Big Sister’ Rosemary, who shared her journey as a mentor. The live auction added to the energy in the room, with generous bids raising vital funds.

A highlight of the morning was presenting our 'Stake in the Ground' award to Youth Aid Officer Simon Gulland, acknowledging his long-standing support of our programme.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success, especially our event partner, PAK'nSAVE Rangiora, for their generous support. See more photos and moments from the day on Facebook and Instagram.

The MainPower Decarbonisation Fund is open!

The MainPower Decarbonisation Fund supports projects that reduce carbon emissions within the MainPower network area.

The MainPower Decarbonisation Fund opens once every year, providing up to $100,000 of financial assistance to local organisations, businesses, individuals, and any other entity positively contributing to decarbonisation within the MainPower network area (Waimakariri, Hurunui and Kaikōura).

By offering grants and resources, we aim to empower our community to implement projects that have a tangible impact on our environment. Whether it’s through renewable energy installations, electrification projects, new technology adoption, research, or educational programmes, we believe that every effort counts in our collective journey towards a greener future.

The MainPower Decarbonisation Fund is part of our MPowered Future strategy, which identifies “decarbonising our place” as a key focus area for MainPower.

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2025 at 5pm.

Alert: Is your group an incorporated society or a sports club?

If so, have you updated your constitution and re-registered yet? If not –these workshops may help!

A new Incorporated Societies Act was passed in 2022. This new Act requires all incorporated societies to update their constitutions and apply to re-register by early April 2026, if they want to keep being an incorporated society. Groups who don't re-register will run into problems applying for funding, keeping their assets and protecting their Committee members from personal liability. Community Law Canterbury is running some workshops to help groups learn more about these new laws and to learn how to update their constitutions.

Is your knowledge about the new law a bit patchy?

Amongst other things, there are new rules about payments to Committee members, holding general meetings and voting. If you'd like to know more about these new rules, (and the four things your group will need to do to stay incorporated), you can come along to one of our 90 minute workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 09 June, and is repeated on Weds 16 June and Weds 20 July,

Trying to sort out your group’s constitution?

If you are using the Registrar’s free Constitution Builder Tool to update your constitution, and you've got some questions, you are welcome to come along to one of our Constitution Builder Tool workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 16 June, and will be repeated on Wednesday 16 July, and Saturday 23 August

Wondering about the paperwork after you’ve finished registering?

There are a few things your group will need to do differently once you’ve finished reregistering. This workshop will cover what you need to do to keep you group on track once you have re-registered. The next one of these is on Monday 08 September.

ARE YOU A SPORTS CLUB? Want to know more about the new law? We're considering running a workshop specifically for clubs. Contact us to find our more.

Want to know more? Interested in booking?

These workshops are open to local groups. Any two Committee members can attend, provided that those Committee members are not lawyers, accountants or paid advisors to the sector. Bookings can be made by emailing communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz.

This advanced workshop explores how the principles of trauma informed care could be applied to your particular field of practice.

Understanding Māori Health Models

This interactive workshop will explore Māori Models of Health for participants to develop and enhance their work practice and cultural competency.

This focused workshop explores how best to support men’s wellbeing, how to identify signs of distress and how to engage in a way that resonates with them.
