Kia ora koutou,
Greetings from the Editor
Things have been busy in the community. July seems to be the season of AGM meetings and community projects!
The Inclusive Sports Festival in the school holidays was a highlight of mine, seeing our communities with disabilities coming together to enjoy a range of sport and recreational opportunities.
This was the third time this event has been led by local para athlete, Zack Lappin, and it continues to go from strength to strength!
Thank you to the groups and organisations that supported this event.
At the end of August, we have the first ever (to my knowledge) North Canterbury Disbility Expo! This was an idea from a local to promote the services available to our community.
We also have forums coming up on older persons matters, food security and a networking meeting in Oxford.
For all the gardeners out there, this is the time to be planning your spring garden.
Be thinking about what frost hardy plants you can plant now and baby them through the colder mornings. Brassica’s and Kale are a favorite of mine to grow over winter and harvest in late Spring.

Kaiapoi Community Support is now Kaiapoi Foodbank
You might have noticed a change at the Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Kaiapoi site in Sewell Street. We’ve changed our name from Kaiapoi Community Support to Kaiapoi Foodbank.
We made this change to better reflect what most people come to us for—food. The new name makes it easier for people in need to find us and for others to understand what we do.
But Kaiapoi Foodbank is more than just food.
As part of Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust, we offer wraparound support for individuals and whānau who are doing it tough. This means when someone comes in for a kai parcel, we also check in and offer help in other ways. Whether that’s a listening ear, support for parenting, or connecting them with our wider services.
What we offer includes:
• Emergency food support: Food parcels for those in the Kaiapoi, Waikuku, Woodend, Ohoka and Kainga areas.
• Parenting Support: Courses, drop-in centre for parents of teenagers and grandparents raising grandchildren support.
• Support for individuals and whānau with our family social workers and budgeting support.
• Rangatahi and tamariki support: For young people struggling with anxiety, grief, or tough times at home.
• Referrals to other services: For those needing additional support pathways.
Whether you come to us for food, parenting help, or someone to talk to, you’ll find a team who cares and who will walk alongside you.
Kaiapoi Foodbank is located at 24 Sewell Street and open Monday to Friday, 10am–2pm.
If you, or someone you know, needs support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here for you. For more information or to donate, visit wellbeingnc.org.nz
Kia ora!
My name is Susie Milne
I am the new co-ordinator for the Kaiapoi Foodbank (Previously Kaiapoi Community Support).
I am gradually navigating my way around the inner workings of the foodbank and the Kaiapoi and surrounding area.
Having lived in North Canterbury for many years, where my husband and I brought up our children, we now live in Kaikoura and I travel to work early Monday mornings, heading back home again on Fridays. The trips south on Monday mornings are stunning, I get to experience the beautiful starry skies turning into beautiful sunrises. I don’t think I would ever not be overwhelmed by the beauty of these.
Kaikoura has so much to offer. I enjoy being part of the Dark Sky Sanctuary, getting out with the telescopes on starry nights, doing the peninsula walk, and of course - paddleboarding. Kaikoura is certainly well named, with crayfish, paua, and a variety of seafood gracing our tables. It is also a place of many hunters, young and the not so young.
My main frame of work over the years has been in the suicide bereavement field, and I continue to deliver Mental Health First Aid workshops in the community and at MHERC.
After having an enjoyable stint at Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust a few years ago I moved on as Wellbeing Coordinator at Kaikoura Healthcare, then worked as a reporter for the Kaikoura Star, where I am still doing a few hours a week during the weekends. It is lovely being back in the fold of Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust, experiencing the depth and breadth of support they offer.
I am slowly melding into the foodbank and refreshing my knowledge around the supports available in Kaiapoi and surrounding areas, and would love people to contact me about their services and what they are up to. If we can connect over a coffee—even better!
And, most importantly—special mention goes out to the volunteers at the foodbank, it has been such a privilege getting to know them and to be welcomed into their amazing team.

!Newsflash!
Lizard Discovery at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Park!
We were busy undertaking our usual restoration work in the park, when we discovered a Canterbury grass skink! and then another! And then even more!
Canterbury grass skinks reach maturity in 1.5 to 2 years, and females reproduce annually, giving birth to litters of up to six juveniles in mid-to-late summer (January–February) after a three-month gestation.
This species is classified as At Risk—Declining.
How fantastic is it for us to learn the park is providing a safe habitat for these native reptiles! This discovery highlights the ecological value of our restoration efforts.
If you spot a Canterbury grass skink at the park, please act like a scientist:
OBSERVE BUT DO NOT TOUCH and DO NOT TAKE HOME.
These lizards need our protected grassland terrain to survive in the wild.
More highlights from our Park Planting Programme over June and July
A Huge Thank You to Bruce Craig for his amazing surprise donation!
Isn’t it nice when you receive gifts out of the blue?
Bruce kindly donated 388 native plants to our park’s planting programme. This unexpected and thoughtful contribution brings us significantly closer to our restoration goals. Tumeke, Bruce! Mīharo!
More thanks to our Christ’s College Diploma Students leading the way here at the park. During their July school holidays, almost a dozen Christ’s College boys worked really hard, four days each, toward Gold Diplomas in Sustainability Studies.
Together they planted an impressive 1,641 plants around Tūtaepatu Lagoon and along the main trail under our supervision.
It is good to know there are aspiring leaders in Sustainability, willing to sacrifice spare time, for the sake of restoring our environment, understanding what this can do, or at least learning what it takes, to mitigate climate change. We are thrilled by this longstanding relationship we have with Christ’s College and look forward to seeing more Diploma students come help in the next school holiday period.
Thanks to such great contributions from our donors and volunteers, we’ve nearly filled all available planting spots around the lagoon!
If you’re keen to volunteer with us come to the office and learn more about our next steps: mulching and summer care to help the new plants thrive!
More Research Collaboration with University of Canterbury’s Geography Department
The Trust also enjoys a longstanding relationship, indeed a collaborative partnership with the University of Canterbury, supporting Third Year Geography students in their GEOG 309 paper.
This year their research focuses on the relationship between plant species and bird distribution in our park. Students may use techniques like 5-minute bird counts (5MBC), audiomoths, and geospatial analysis. Their insights will help guide our future planting strategies!
Upcoming Community Planting Day – Mahinga Kai Huria Reserve
Join us on Saturday 23 August, 10am–12.30pm at Mahinga Kai Huria Reserve, off Courtenay Drive, for a community planting day.
We’ll be planting 1,000 trees—and to keep everyone energized, there will be free coffee and a BBQ!
Bring your friends, family, and enthusiasm to help grow our greenspaces.

North Canterbury workshop showcases the surprising elegance of paper in modern floral art
Fresh flowers will always be at the heart of floral art, but a surprising new element is increasingly catching the eye of designers and enthusiasts alike—paper.
At a recent Floral Art North Canterbury workshop held in June, guest floral artist Shelley Welsh demonstrated how this humble material can be transformed into something truly elegant and expressive in floral design.
Titled “Paper with a Twist”, the workshop encouraged members to explore paper as more than a support material or backdrop. Instead, Shelley highlighted how paper, when used thoughtfully, can become a central design feature.
Participants experimented with folding, twisting, curling, and shaping paper alongside fresh and dried plant materials—discovering new ways to bring texture, structure, and creativity into their arrangements.
If you are interested in exploring floral design, get in touch with Sharon on 027 6486 998, or Shelley on 021 124 9016
We’d love to welcome you to the group!
Planting and caring for fruit trees in a Canterbury winter
Winter is the best time to plant fruit trees in Canterbury. The cooler months allow trees to settle in while they’re dormant, giving their roots a chance to establish before spring growth begins.
Start by choosing a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Apples, pears, plums, peaches, and nectarines all grow well in our region. Bare-root trees are ideal in winter and often more economical than potted varieties.
Prepare the site by digging a hole twice as wide as the roots and adding compost and a handful of blood and bone. Place the tree so the graft union (the swollen point where the variety is grafted onto the rootstock) is above the soil line. Backfill, firm the soil gently, and water well.
Stake the tree if it’s in a windy spot and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds—keeping it clear of the trunk to avoid rot.
Even though it’s winter, don’t forget to check soil moisture, especially during dry or windy periods. Newly planted trees may still need watering in their early weeks.
Winter is also the right time to prune deciduous fruit trees. Prune to create an open vase shape, which allows light and air to circulate. Remove any dead or crossing branches and aim for a balanced structure.
A winter planting can reward you for years to come with spring blossoms and homegrown fruit. Whether you’re planting one tree or starting a small orchard, a little effort now will bring delicious results in the seasons ahead.
Join the Woodend Garden Club! If you love gardening and great company, why not come along to the Woodend Garden Club? We meet every 3rd Monday at 1.30pm in the Woodend Community Centre. For more details, give Shirley a call on 027 275 3027.
Scottish Country Dancing Club
Local Legend Honoured for Lifetime of Service – Ms Audrey Myra Mattinson - has been recognised for her remarkable service to Scottish Country Dancing and the wider Rangiora community, with a national honour acknowledging more than three decades of dedication and volunteerism.
Known to many in North Canterbury as the driving force behind local Scottish Country Dance groups, Ms Mattinson has tutored dancers across the region for over 30 years. Her involvement spans the Rangiora, Burnside, and Oxford Scottish Country Dance Clubs, where she has not only taught generations of dancers but also supported countless community events and fundraisers.
Through these clubs, Ms Mattinson has helped raise funds for causes such as Riding for the Disabled, St John, and Oxford Land Search and Rescue. Her passion for cultural celebration has seen her organise dance demonstrations at the Oxford Farmers’ Market, Kaiapoi’s Waitangi Day events, Rangiora’s Festival of Colour, and local retirement homes—bringing joy and tradition to people of all ages.
In recognition of her deep-rooted commitment to the dance community, she was made a Life Member of the Rangiora Scottish Country Dance Club and has been an active member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society’s New Zealand branch for over 50 years.
Beyond the dance floor, Ms Mattinson has quietly served her community in other ways.
From 1988 until 2023, she was a volunteer driver for Red Cross Meals on Wheels, generously donating her petrol expenses back to the organisation. She also volunteered with the Rangiora Library for an impressive 33 years, assisting with shelf-stacking on a weekly basis until only recently.
In 2014, the Waimakariri District Council honoured her with a Community Services Award, recognising the breadth of her contributions.
Now, with this national accolade, Ms Mattinson’s decades of dedication and generosity have been acknowledged at the highest level. “
She’s a quiet achiever who has touched so many lives in this community,” said a fellow dance club member. “This recognition is richly deserved.”
Matawai Park Group
Land for Matawai Park was purchased in 1970 and, following much work through the 1970s and 80s, it was officially opened in 1990. Matawai has evolved into a beautiful park valued as both a recreation asset and as a botanical treasure.
This didn’t come about by accident. For much of its life the park had a group of volunteers shaping it and keeping it in good order. Although there has been less hands-on input from volunteers recently, some of the original group still keep a keen eye on the ongoing development of the park.
The time has come for a reboot of volunteer input into Matawai. A small group has started meeting at the park every Friday morning to keep this tradition going, working alongside Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust, Waimakariri District Council staff, and Keep Rangiora Beautiful.
Join us for some sociable nature gardening on Fridays, 9am to 11am with morning tea provided at 10.30am. Bring suitable clothing and footwear, any favourite tools (we do provide some tools though) and a cup for your tea.
Email pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for more info and so we can notify you of cancellations.

R13 Youth Development Trust (R13) is a community based, non-governmental organisation which provides a range of free services to support and improve the quality of life of at-risk youth, youth offenders and their whanau/family in North Canterbury.
Our range of services support young people with complex challenges, including mental health issues, disengagement from education, family violence and trouble with the law. While working with us, at-risk youth gain personal development and life skills, learn how to set goals, discover their purpose, improve their well-being, develop resilience and confidence.
Our services positively influence the lives of the young people and whanau we work with by eliminating the barriers to opportunity and helping them to reach their fullest potential through the power of partnership.
R13’s mentors and youth workers support young people aged between 12 -20 years through one on one mentoring and youth work. We provide free wrap-around support to help young people identify and address their mental wellbeing, social anxiety, anger, drug and alcohol issues. We also help those who are ready to leave, or have left the school system, to set personal goals, create an action plan, learn life skills and stay motivated, as they work towards employment and a more positive life-path.
Our family harm programme focusses on prevention, intervention and support for families impacted by violence.
Success Story
A rangatahi was involved with police due to low level offending and for this reason was referred to R13. With mentoring this rangatahi has completed community service, started attending the gym, attended a course they were referred to and graduated, and has not reoffended since. Mentoring support has meant this rangatahi has made huge progress in changing their behaviours and attitudes.
Visit www.r13youthtrust.com to learn more about how R13 assists rangatahi and whanau in the North Canterbury community. Referrals to R13 can also be made via the website.
There have been some changes to the KiwiSaver Contribution, as well as the introduction of the Depositor Compensation Scheme. August is “Sorted Money Month” and there are 4 free on-line events as well as 2 free live events, in Christchurch, which you might like to attend.
Changes to the KiwiSaver Contribution
The Government has introduced several KiwiSaver changes which come into effect on 1 July 2025, 1 April 2026 and 1 April 2028. Click through to see how they might affect you. ird.govt.nz/kiwisaver-changes
Depositor Compensation Scheme
The MoneyHub has an excellent article, clearly explained and with several relatable examples Do take the time to read it and, if it affects you, make your own, informed decision.
Always check the facts with your bank/finance company. moneyhub.co.nz/depositor-compensation-scheme-explained.html MoneyHub Summary
• From 1 July 2025, if your bank, credit union, building society, or (selected) finance company fails, you'll get up to $100,000 of your money back - guaranteed.
• This protection is automatic, free, and covers most everyday bank accounts and term deposits. But there are important limits and exclusions you need to understand.
• The DCS provides valuable protection but isn't a complete safety net. You get $100,000 coverage per institution - no more, no less.
• Your KiwiSaver isn't covered. And if you have significant wealth, you may want to consider actively managing your deposit spreading strategy.

Alert: Is your group an incorporated society or a sports club?
If so, have you updated your constitution and re-registered yet? If not –these workshops may help!
A new Incorporated Societies Act was passed in 2022. This new Act requires all incorporated societies to update their constitutions and apply to re-register by early April 2026, if they want to keep being an incorporated society. Groups who don't re-register will run into problems applying for funding, keeping their assets and protecting their Committee members from personal liability. Community Law Canterbury is running some workshops to help groups learn more about these new laws and to learn how to update their constitutions.
Is your knowledge about the new law a bit patchy?
Amongst other things, there are new rules about payments to Committee members, holding general meetings and voting. If you'd like to know more about these new rules, (and the four things your group will need to do to stay incorporated), you can come along to one of our 90 minute workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 09 June, and is repeated on Weds 16 June and Weds 20 July,
Trying to sort out your group’s constitution?
If you are using the Registrar’s free Constitution Builder Tool to update your constitution, and you've got some questions, you are welcome to come along to one of our Constitution Builder Tool workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 16 June, and will be repeated on Wednesday 16 July, and Saturday 23 August
Wondering about the paperwork after you’ve finished registering?
There are a few things your group will need to do differently once you’ve finished reregistering. This workshop will cover what you need to do to keep you group on track once you have re-registered. The next one of these is on Monday 08 September.
ARE YOU A SPORTS CLUB? Want to know more about the new law? We're considering running a workshop specifically for clubs. Contact us to find our more.
Want to know more? Interested in booking?
These workshops are open to local groups. Any two Committee members can attend, provided that those Committee members are not lawyers, accountants or paid advisors to the sector. Bookings can be made by emailing communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz.

Welcome the Birds to Waimakairiri
Get creative and join the fun and help make “The Flock”
Each spring migratory birds fly to the South Island’s braided rivers to breed. Some come from the coast, while others fly from the North Island or across the ocean from Australia and Fiji. They have been making this journey for millions of years but because of predators and habitat degradation, some are close to extinction.
We are creating “The Flock” in Waimakariri to help educate everyone about the birds and their breeding areas and spread the message about the threats facing them.
How it works…..
Wooden cut out birds will be distributed for decorating. Paint your bird and bring it along with your family/group to join the Flock at our community event at Waikuku Beach Domain on 31st August 2025 (10am – 1pm) to help us to welcome the birds to the Ashley Rakahuri for their breeding season.
We will have local groups along to help inform on the types of birds that will be arriving and give us some tips on what we can all do to help the ongoing survival of these wonderful birds.
If you would like to be involved, please contact Greenspace at Waimakariri District Council 0800 965 468 and register with your name, phone and email details to receive a bird.
Other activities
• Another activity to join in as part of our celebrations, will be a scavenger hunt with participating local shops in Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Oxford. They will display a small, numbered photo of a bird in their windows, see how many birds you can find. You will be able to download a checklist from our website detailing the birds and participating shops to join in the fun. We may even have a prize if you can spot all the birds!
• Come along to visit the photographic bird display to be held in our Rangiora Service Centre office and meet the birds that come to Waimakariri each year. The display will run from mid-August to early September.
• Download and print your own Wrybill mask from our website to decorate and wear it to our event on 31st August 2025
• Keep an eye out for the special Welcome the Birds street flags in Rangiora (Cones Rd), Kaiapoi (Smith St) and Oxford (Main St).
