Greetings from the Editor

By the time you read this, you will have braved winter and four months without a public holiday! Longer daylight hours, warmer weather and pending long weekends certainly bring a ‘spring’ to the step.

6–12 October is Mental Health Awareness week. In line with the Mental Health Foundation's, ‘5 Winning Ways to Wellbeing,’ this year’s theme is around connection—‘Top up Together’. The website is full of useful information, resources and ideas and prompts, to encourage people to get out of their shell, try something new and ‘Connect’ with others over things they enjoy. It’s worth a look: mhaw.nz

This month’s edition of Chatter is full of opportunities for local residents to connect with others. In the volunteering section you’ll see local opportunities to be involved in anything from miniature horses, to boat restoration, alongside the usual sports and the planting days and river clean-ups that happen regularly across the District.

As usual, and particularly with the warmer weather, there are a huge range of local events to enjoy. We are blessed with many talented locals, so it’s well worth using the opportunity to reconnect with a friend or family member that you haven’t seen for a while and enjoy a local gallery, concert or ‘Get Active’ walking or cycling in one of our great trails and parks. Which reminds me of my personal favourite ‘Winning Way to Wellbeing’—Take Notice. At this time of year, the gardens around our District are stunning, the skies often clear and the sun’s warmth means that people start to smile a bit more. I think noticing the small, but lovely things around us is a great way to lift the spirits—and we can pass that on to others.

E huri tō aroaro ki te rā Tukuna tō ataarangi Ki muri a koe.

Turn and face the sun and let your shadow fall behind you.

Celebrating

Ngāi Tahu

Settlement

Day at Tuhaitara Coastal Park

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust’s creation story is tied to the Crown’s settlement with Ngai Tāhu over its Treaty of Waitangi Claims, reached finally in 1998. Ngāi Tahu Settlement Day is celebrated annually ever since and this year staff from Ngāi Tahu Holdings joined Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust on 1 October for a day of hands-on mahi in the park.

Together, we carried out pest plant control and helped tidy up the whenua. For everyone there it was a meaningful way to honour the legacy of the settlement through collective action and environmental stewardship.

The signing of the Deed of Settlement between Ngāi Tahu and the Crown is a historically significant moment, understood by the iwi as reclaiming rangatiratanga and reaffirming their role as kaitiaki. Our mahi at the Trust reflects core Ngāi Tāhu values such as:

• kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment);

• whanaungatanga (building relationships);

• and manaakitanga (care and respect for people and place).

Spring findings!

Trust Biodiversity and Community Ranger Chris discovered another egg amongst the grass at Pines Beach wetland. This is a sign our trapping efforts are successful. It’s awesome to see the park is a suitable habitat for so many bird species who choose to call the park home.

Volunteer

Job Vacancy

Do you have surveying skills in ecology?

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust is partnering with Waimakariri District Council, in search of an ecologist to undertake our full park ecological survey. This is benchmark stuff! Never been done before and vital for our planning and development going forward. If you’ve got what it takes or know an experienced ecologist who wants to volunteer on 3 October (Saturday) and 4 October (Sunday) please contact Kelli@tuhaitarapark.org.nz

Shout Outs to our Trust community volunteers and donors this month

A big warm fuzzy goes to Lawrence from Pest Free Waitaha for hooking us up with some peanut butter to gift to our amazing trappers—oh, and of course a warm fuzzy for every trap checked over the past few months, to each of our amazing trappers!

We continue with the Sustainable Futures Diploma programme, in partnership with Christ’s Collage. This school holiday period saw 11 Christ College students undertaking

their mahi, undertaking various restoration projects. Talk about a Win Win! The students follow their vocation in environmental studies, learning and achieving while we get committed hard workers helping us progress our restoration objectives.

Twenty-five Peninsula and Plains Orienteering Club members joined us to plant the trees they donated to the park! We had a simply awesome morning with these volunteers and got almost 400 plants in the ground.

Welcome to the Birds

The grass is growing and I’ve had to start mowing my lawn again. This means spring is here and we’ll get to see some of the birds we haven’t seen for a while. Which ones? Well, these are the birds that migrate overseas or inside New Zealand for the winter.

The well-known godwits (kuaka) have flown in from Alaska, a flight of about 12,000km one way which takes eight days non-stop. You’ll find them around Waikuku Estuary and the Waimakariri River mouth. From nearer to home come the braidedriver birds. Wrybills and South Island pied oystercatchers have returned from the North Island; banded dotterels from as far as Australia and other parts of New Zealand; black-billed gulls and black-fronted terns from coastal areas—all returning to breed in inland Canterbury and Southland.

Migrating in smaller numbers to Waimakariri are two types of cuckoo. The long-tailed cuckoo is a large brown bird while the shining cuckoo is iridescent green with a stripy breast. It’s only 16cm long. Both, very sensibly, spend winter in the Pacific Islands and return to New Zealand to nest in September–October.

These birds have a bit of a bad reputation— they’re home wreckers. The shining cuckoo (pīpīwharauroa) pushes the eggs out of grey warbler (riroriro) nests and lays its own which the riroriro then raises.

Shining cuckoos come wherever grey warblers are found which could be your garden. This means you’re likely to hear their call (listen to this at New Zealand Birds Online) just about anywhere.

But to increase your chances you need to cultivate grey warblers. Planting trees (especially native manuka and kanuka) and trapping pests (especially rats) are the two best ways to increase your grey warbler population. Contact pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for help to get started with pest control at your place or on a local reserve.

The North Canterbury Woodcraft Club continues to welcome new members who are discovering the wonderful world of Woodturning. wondering why it took me so long to join the Woodcraft Club? I did a Google search and found their website but got a little busy and initially parked the idea”.

woodturning. Kath stated “being equally fascinated and fearful of lumps of wood rotating at speed on a powerful machine, I needed help”. Thankfully she made the all important first call to a Club member. The following Wednesday afternoon, she showed up at the club rooms. "Club tutor Merv calmly taught me to make a garden dibbler” says Kath. “He simplified the process and guided me through the steps to complete this project in under 2 hours. Oh the joy of sharp gouges and the feel of the chisels cutting cleanly” She felt her confidence increasing due to the excellent teaching and has now found a place to take her skills and turning to another level!

We’re really pleased to welcome Kath to the Club.

While Kath has her own lathe and tools, you do not need these items to become a member of the Club. While it is very handy, in time, to acquire the equipment so you can continue practising new skills at home, a number of members do not have their own equipment, either due to space limitations or preferring not to have to put up with the dust that wood turning inevitably generates. There are plenty of opportunities on Wednesday afternoons, Thursday nights and Saturday mornings to make good use of the Clubs extensive range of wood turning or general wood working equipment, and the great tutors!

The Club is also running a number of one off “Have a Go” sessions for clubs and organisations in our community, such as the Christian Home Educating Families Home School Teen Age Group, the Salvation Army Men’s Group and a Rangiora Scouts Group, where they are introduced to wood turning. In these two hour sessions, participants can select to make a garden dibbler, a twig pot (bud vase) a ball in cup game or an iPad / iPhone stand. With one tutor per two participants, personal attention is guaranteed, with experienced club members very keen to pass on the skills they have acquired over many years of turning.

As can be seen by the smiles on the faces of the first CHEF teenage group to give turning a go, they really enjoyed the experience and had some wonderful pieces to take away. Don’t hesitate to contact the club if you or your club / organisation would like to ‘have a go’ at turning. Check out https://nthcantwoodcraft.net/

Enjoy Fellowship While Contributing to Community Good

Category: Social Support Location: Belfast Time: flexible

Members meet each week on Tuesday evening for fellowship including a meal and a short meeting, usually with a guest speaker, all of which is about two hours. Attendance at meetings is voluntary but is a chance to build friendships with fellow members. We run fundraising projects to support community-based activities, such as youth leadership, buying computers for low decile primary schools, purchasing aids for early childhood education and supporting outdoor education. We run a student speech contest for local schools. We also support wider Rotary initiatives such as driver education for high school students and supporting the international effort to eliminate polio. We collect medical equipment surplus to local providers to be sent to the Pacific. Our most important fund-raising project is growing new potatoes and selling them in northwest Christchurch before Christmas. Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury is delighted to welcome Michael Campbell to our Board of Trustees. Born in Northern Ireland, Michael has called Christchurch home since 1993, when he moved there with his wife Mary, a midwife. More recently, the couple settled in Kaiapoi.

Michael brings a wealth of experience across business, education, health, sport, and the not-for-profit sector. Alongside his professional career and current role as CEO of Te Pai Nui, a company supporting schools and charities to raise vital funds, Michael has also generously given his time to many community causes, including St Albans Educare Preschool, Canterbury United Football Club, NETNZ, and the Christchurch Irish Society.

Michael says he was excited to join the Board because of the life-changing impact mentoring can have:

“Big Brothers Big Sisters offers children an opportunity to reach their full potential, and I’m really keen to help support this mahi.”

We are thrilled to have Michael’s skills, passion, and community spirit helping to guide our programme and strengthen mentoring for tamariki and rangatahi across North Canterbury.

We’re excited to be part of the Waimakariri Older Persons Expo on Wednesday 8 October. Come and chat with us about budgeting, retirement, or any financial worries. Think of us as a friendly sounding board to help you avoid those “financial potholes.”

✓ Free and confidential support

✓ Tips, tools, and advice to help you stay on track

✓ Sorted retirement booklets available at our stand

Don’t wait until things get stressful—stop by, say hello, and take away resources that make retirement a little easier.

Helpful Resources at Your Fingertips

In addition to our one-to-one advice, there are many excellent services and websites tailored for older people. Here are some we recommend:

• Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) – A wealth of local knowledge. You’ll find the Rangiora branch near the library and WDC offices. cab.org.nz/search/retirement

• The Next Steps website has had a makeover and is looking rather smart. You can easily navigate to finding transport for seniors and local groups and connections to keep you busy. nextsteps.org.nz/resources/waimakariri/

• Sorted – Thinking about a retirement village? Sorted has excellent guides and tools. We’ll also have their booklets available at the Expo. sorted.org.nz/guides/retirement/ and sorted.org.nz/tools/retirement-navigator/

• Services for Seniors – An MSD/WINZ booklet with key information. This booklet is available from your local MSD/WINZ office. workandincome.govt.nz/documents/eligibility/ seniors/services-for-seniors.pdf

• Scam Awareness – Quick but important reads on how to avoid becoming a “money mule” and how to spot frauds, scams, phishing, and pyramid schemes. sorted.org.nz/blog/could-you-be-a-money-mule/ sorted.org.nz/search-results/SearchForm?Search=scams&action_results=Go

• MoneyHub – Clear, well-researched articles on retirement villages, lifetime homes, and more. moneyhub.co.nz/apps/search?q=retirement moneyhub.co.nz/lifetime-home-review.html moneyhub.co.nz/retirement-villages.html

We’re looking forward to meeting you at the Expo.

Whether you want answers, resources, or just a reassuring chat, come and say hello—you’ll leave with helpful tools, ideas, and confidence for the road ahead.

If you would like more information or wish to engage with a Financial Mentor, please contact us to talk about your situation.

We’re on Facebook and bsnc.org.nz

Our office is in the War Memorial Hall, corner of High and Albert Streets, Rangiora.

Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm.

General Support

Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping everyone know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action.

Services

Our service is not-for-profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We’re available face-toface, by phone and by email.

No question is too big or too small to bring to us. We’ll listen, research and assist you in any way we can. There’s no time limit on how long you can spend with one of our volunteers. Even if you’ve taken some steps already, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you.

It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether it’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product or how to approach your gas/phone/ power provider about a query on your bill. Maybe it’s how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue or your landlord about a tenancy issue. Or perhaps it’s an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours. We’re here to help!

We offer additional services for clients including:

• free Justice of the Peace service (please check with us for days/times)

• free Beneficiary, Budgeting, Employment, Immigration and Legal Information clinics (please check with us for days/times)

• free CV preparation and cover letter service (by appointment only)

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or email us northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Preventing Suicide using the Solution Focused Approach with John Henden

Wednesday 26 November, 9am-3.30pm, Online via Zoom

Workshop Aims

Preventing Suicide using the Solution Focused Approach.

Following the phenomenal success of his previous face-face workshops with over 1100 participants attending across NZ, John Henden presents this one-day interactive training on Preventing Suicide Using the Solution Focused Approach.

Delivered online, this professional development workshop is intended specifically to reduce further the suicide rate amongst clients/service users (SUs) and to act as a refresher workshop for the basic tools and techniques of the SFBT model. Attendees will be provided with a unique approach to the SU who is having suicidal ideas, which both reduces the likelihood of further suicidal thinking and, at the same time, reduces the sense of burden on the health professional.

With the focus on the practical side of preventing suicide using this approach, there will be some powerful, easy-to-learn-and-apply solution focused tools and techniques taught followed by interactive practice exercises by participants. These can be implemented immediately into participants’ daily practice.

This training will cover:

• How we can tell whether someone is suicidal, rather than simply depressed.

• Empathy and deep empathy.

• The three core conditions for effective communication and rapid rapport building.

• Questions to elicit suicidal ideation.

• Sample questions to ask once suicidal ideation has been established.

• Effective Solution Focused techniques in suicide prevention.

• 10 key points to cover in the first session.

• Generating other possibilities, alongside the suicide option, as potential solutions to difficulties.

• ‘Going with’ the suicidal person.

• Being as effective as possible.

• Graveside Scenario.

• Ending a session positively, constructively and assertively. He will demonstrate practical examples of the above; and, in addition, cover suicide in the context of unresolved or undeclared trauma.

For more information on intended learning outcomes, who should attend, price and registration go to: grow.co.nz/preventing-suicide-john-henden-online-2024

Adopted

Loss, love, family and reunion | By

Adopted is the powerful and honest account of two of the thousands of children adopted during the era of closed adoption in Aotearoa New Zealand, between 1955 and the early 1980s.

In October, Wendy Howe and Aimee Claassens from the Waimakariri District Council Community Team will be available for drop-in sessions to help community groups understand and prepare for re-registration under the updated Incorporated Societies Act 2022.

Join us at the Rangiora Library, to hear co-author Brigitta Baker’s own story around closed adoption.

Organizations have until April 2026 to re-register as an incorporated society. This could mean updating your constitution, membership rules and governance requirements.

Drop-in sessions for Incorporated Societies

Rangiora Library: Friday 10 October 4–6pm

Oxford Library: Wednesday 15 October 12–2pm

Kaiapoi Library: Thursday 23 October 4–6pm

If your group needs support, please contact aimee.claassens@wmk.govt.nz and look out for more information on the Waimakariri District Council and Waimakariri Community Team Facebook pages.
