Greetings from the Editor

Winter is definitely here and with the shortest day nearly upon us, we will soon turn the corner toward Spring. The frosty mornings aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the sparkly winter sun that so often follows is a delight!

I recently read an article about embracing winter, as a chance to slow down and value the small seasonal traditions like reading a book by the fire, making comforting soups, having a warm bath and walking in nature in the stiller, clearer air that you get at this time of year.

Winter is also a chance to treat yourself to a bit of culture. It is usually the season of plays and concerts and exhibitions. See inside for details.

The Inclusive Waimakariri Action Plan details a range of activities and commitments that will result in a district that offers equitable opportunities and appropriate supports and services for those with physical or cognitive impairments. It has resulted in some great local initiatives.

Coming up we have the North Canterbury Inclusive Sports Festival, to be held at Mainpower Stadium on 4 July,

and in August there is a Disability Forum to engage parents and caregivers, and service providers in discussions about some of their challenges and triumphs in dealing with disability

People often feel loneliness and financial hardship more at this time of year. See details inside of our District’s range of free community lunches, dinners and social connection groups. It’s good to be aware of these, as they offer a wonderful opportunity for people to have their spirits lifted, engaging with others over a good hot meal.

We are delighted with how the Chatter Community Information Newsletter keeps growing in readership and contribution. Thanks to all who have given positive feedback to our wonderful Serena who pulls together all of this information for us.

Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust - June Newsletter

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou MāoriGreetings of the Māori New Year

As winter brings the longer nights, so the sky darkens over the park and when it’s at its darkest, a cluster of shimmering stars appears over Te Tai o Mahaanui (Pegasus Bay) - Matariki! Also known in the northern hemisphere as Pleiades or Subaru, Matariki heralds the Māori New Year — a time to honour those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau (family) and plant seeds of hope for the future.

As a Tiriti o Waitangi settlement trust, Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara welcomes this uniquely Kiwi celebration, rich in heritage and meaning, and hopes it will be embraced by people from all walks of life as a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the land.

If your group is custodian to a biota node in the park, now is the time to come visit! Plan a picnic together! Come see how the place is doing and see if anything needs clearing or replanting. Bear in mind the park and beach are closed after dark and the best places to go star-gazing are up high - try Maukatere! (Mt Grey).

Looking ahead

Fundraising focus

The Trust’s two settlement partners, Ngai Tahu and Waimakariri District Council, need as much help as they can from stakeholders and donors in the community. A lot of work at the Trust has to take place indoors at the computer, identifying grants and funds we can apply to, for projects we need doing to achieve our vision.

We’ve been hard at work submitting funding applications to fund materials for our ongoing fieldwork, supplies for our planting programmes, and new equipment to continue with all the routine maintenance. Securing this funding is vital to continue delivering meaningful outcomes for the Park and community.

If you would like to donate to us, or leave a legacy to this place in your will, please be in touch! We would love to hear from you.

We’ve got more planting days coming up in July and August, including a session with students from Christ’s College, working four days each to complete their Gold Diploma. There are also plans in the works for a public volunteer planting day—keep an eye out for more details soon!

If you’d like to get involved, volunteer, or organise a group/ school planting day, please reach out.

This is everyone’s park so we are always keen for everyone to get involved.

Qur planting season kicks into full swing by June: in this month we planted 1,261 plants within the park!

Full steam ahead!

Winter may be here, but things are still busy in the Park. There is restoration work to do, education sessions planned and community support continues to grow — even with frosty mornings and muddy gumboots! A big thank you once again to Kaiapoi High School students for all their stamina and hard work.

As always, our planting season kicks into full swing by June: in this month we planted 1,261 plants within the park! We

couldn’t have done it without the fantastic group of Kaiapoi High School students that came for a planting day at Steve’s node, near Te Kohanga Wetlands. Despite the cold, the students brought great energy and helped us get over 200 native plants in the ground.

Ka pai tō mahi, team!

Canterbury’s Connection to Scottish Country Dancing: Preserving a Rich Heritage

In the heart of Canterbury, a cherished cultural tradition thrives through the energetic steps and lively music of Scottish Country Dancing. The North Canterbury Scottish Country Dancing clubs, based in Rangiora and Oxford, serve as local custodians of a dance form that stretches back centuries, linking New Zealanders to Scotland’s rich history.

Scottish Country Dancing originated in the 18th century, blending Highland dances with European social dance forms. It’s distinguished by its communal nature: dancers form sets of six or eight, moving together through intricate patterns to the sound of fiddles and bagpipes.

Each dance carries a story or tradition, reflecting Scotland’s landscapes, battles, and celebrations.

For the people of Canterbury, the dance is more than just movement; it’s a way to connect with a wider Scottish diaspora and preserve cultural identity. The North Canterbury clubs provide a welcoming environment where newcomers and experienced dancers alike gather to learn, socialize, and celebrate.

Dances like The Dashing White Sergeant or The Sailor come alive in community halls, as dancers don tartans or simply their dancing shoes. These gatherings embody not just exercise and fun, but the transmission of heritage—through music, stories, and shared joy.

Supported by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, the North Canterbury

clubs uphold this cultural legacy with regular classes, events, and social dances, inviting all ages to participate. The tradition continues robustly here, thousands of kilometers from Scotland, proving that culture travels well—and dances on.

For those interested, joining a local class is a wonderful way to step into a lively past and vibrant present. Scottish Country Dancing in Canterbury is truly a dance through history and community. The club meets every Monday at 7.30pm at the Methodist Hall, 176 King Street, Rangiora. No special outfit required—just comfortable shoes and a willingness to have fun!

Waimakariri Combined Friendship Club

The Waimakariri Combined Friendship Club meets from 10am to noon at the Rangiora RSA every fourth Thursday of the month.

Men and women over 65 are very welcome to join in the small and large gatherings for friendship, leisure and education. Guest speakers and outings are always informative, and pétanque, bike-riding, coffee mornings and meals provide opportunities to meet others. Annual subscription is $30.

Wintering Roses: A Gentle Pause for the Season Ahead

Winter may seem like a time to forget about the garden, but for rose lovers, it’s a quiet opportunity to support next season’s bloom. With a little preparation, your roses can rest safely through the cold and wake up strong in spring.

Start by taking a close look at each plant. Trim off any dead, damaged, or diseased stems, but resist the urge to prune heavily. Major shaping should wait until late winter or early spring when frost danger has passed.

Next, tidy the area around the plant. Fallen leaves and old mulch can harbour pests and fungal spores, so give your roses a clean slate for the season.

In areas prone to frost or snow, protecting the graft union is especially important. This is the swollen part near the base of most modern roses, where the top growth is grafted onto hardy rootstock. In very cold climates, mound loose mulch, compost, or soil over this point to keep it insulated.

However, if your winters are wet and relatively mild, take care—too much moisture around the base can lead to rot. In these regions, opt for lighter protection: a breathable wrap such as hessian or jute, or a simple wind barrier, can offer just enough shelter.

And don’t forget water. Even in winter, roses need moisture if the ground is dry but not frozen.

While it may seem like a quiet time in the garden, these simple steps ensure your roses get the rest and protection they need—so when the first signs of spring arrive, they’ll be ready to burst back into life.

Even in winter, roses need moisture

If you’re passionate about plants and looking for a way to connect with like-minded individuals, the Woodend Garden Club invites you to join them. The club meets on the third Monday of each month at 1.30pm at the Woodend Community Centre.

It’s a fantastic way to build a support network, share knowledge, and deepen your appreciation for gardening.

For more information, contact Shirley at 027 275 3027.

Come along and let your love of gardening grow!

North Canterbury Woodcraft Club - May News

May has been a busy month for the North Canterbury Woodcraft Club. Towards the end of the month, we had our AGM with the election of a new Committee. President Noel Graham stood down after 15 years in the role - truly an outstanding effort considering he also comes out to the Club every Wednesday afternoon to voluntarily run the Wednesday Club day.

Also retiring from his important role as Secretary was Merv Laws although both Noel and Merv will continue on the Committee. Howard Pettigrew was elected as the new President with long serving member Paul Wanty continuing in his role as Secretary. Viv Milne was elected as Treasurer.

In addition to running the Club days, every second Wednesday in the month, Noel runs the National Association of Woodturnerʻs (NAW) course - a three year nationally accredited course which takes turners from the very start of turning right through to advanced techniques. He is ably assisted in this by Merv Laws. The curriculum exposes participants to a wide variety of turning styles and methods, including the use of a variety of different media combined with wood (metal, acrylics, etc) experimenting with colouring of wood using dyes, which when applied to spinning platters or dishes mounted in the lathe, produces stunning results. After being exposed to such a variety of techniques and styles of turning, members often decide that one particular aspect really appeals to them, like Bob B who found that making wooden pens really appealed to him.

We have also been thrilled to welcome many new members to the Club over the last few weeks and they have been very keen and eager to try their hand at a new hobby / interest.

New member Jan from Pegasus commented that ʻNoel was very good at explaining things, despite having to assist a large group of other turnersʻ. She was excited to see so many young people in the room turning, and thoroughly enjoyed the session, being very proud of the garden dibbler she produced for her first effort - “I will definitely use thisʻ Mike from North Loburn has his own lathe and has turned before but as a new member, appreciated the expertise available in the Club and the chance to use equipment he doesnʻt have in his workshop. Wednesday regular and Junior Member Leonard, a local homeschooler, was working away on what is known as a live edged bowl. This is where the bark is left exposed on the top edge of the bowl, to add contrast to the turned and polished interior on the inside. Also present were many teenagers from the Rangiora CHEF group - the Christian Home Educating Families. The woodturning efforts of homeschoolers in the Clubrooms meets some of their curriculum requirements. While also having a lathe at home, Leonard loves coming down to the Clubrooms for the expertise he receives from Noel, Merv and others, plus the socialising over the lathes, which is an important part of the Club. While many members have lathes at home, some do not have this essential piece of woodturning equipment, usually due to lack of available space. This is where the Club fulfils an important role - providing all the equipment needed - lathes, tools, sharpening systems etc as well as a large selection of suitable timber, all available as part of the low cost per session. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Howard on 021353 886, visit the clubrooms in the Northbrook Studios, Northbrook Road on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday evenings or checkout https://nthcantwoodcraft.net Weʻre sure you will enjoy the experience!

Corner Expands to

Woodend

to Support Growing Community Needs

Medical Corner is excited to announce plans to open a brand-new general practice in the heart of Woodend, aimed at providing local residents with greater access to high-quality, community-focused healthcare.

The new clinic will be located at the site of the former Impresso Café. We have obtained final consent from the council to begin renovation work on the building, which will be thoughtfully refurbished to serve the needs of patients and staff alike. Our aim is to complete the renovations and open our doors later this year. Once operational, the Woodend practice will offer the full spectrum of general practice services you’ve come to expect from Medical Corner. To further support our patients, the facility will include a pharmacy onsite and generous off-street parking for convenience.

In the meantime, we welcome Woodend residents to enrol now at our Rangiora practice. Patients who register can choose to be seen at either location once the Woodend clinic opens, ensuring flexible access to care.

We’re proud to be expanding into the Woodend community and look forward to supporting the health and wellbeing of local families for many years to come.

For more information or to enrol, please contact Medical Corner Rangiora or visit our website.

These everyday legends aren’t just volunteers — they’re role models, listeners, adventure buddies, and trusted adults making a lasting difference in young lives.

This month, we’re thrilled to mark some special match anniversaries — moments that show just how impactful and enduring these relationships can be.

Alert: Is your group an incorporated society or a sports club?

If so, have you updated your constitution and re-registered yet? If not –these workshops may help!

A new Incorporated Societies Act was passed in 2022. This new Act requires all incorporated societies to update their constitutions and apply to re-register by early April 2026, if they want to keep being an incorporated society. Groups who don't re-register will run into problems applying for funding, keeping their assets and protecting their Committee members from personal liability. Community Law Canterbury is running some workshops to help groups learn more about these new laws and to learn how to update their constitutions.

Is your knowledge about the new law a bit patchy?

Amongst other things, there are new rules about payments to Committee members, holding general meetings and voting. If you'd like to know more about these new rules, (and the four things your group will need to do to stay incorporated), you can come along to one of our 90 minute workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 09 June, and is repeated on Weds 16 June and Weds 20 July,

Trying to sort out your group’s constitution?

If you are using the Registrar’s free Constitution Builder Tool to update your constitution, and you've got some questions, you are welcome to come along to one of our Constitution Builder Tool workshops. The next workshop is on Monday 16 June, and will be repeated on Wednesday 16 July, and Saturday 23 August

Wondering about the paperwork after you’ve finished registering?

There are a few things your group will need to do differently once you’ve finished reregistering. This workshop will cover what you need to do to keep you group on track once you have re-registered. The next one of these is on Monday 08 September.

ARE YOU A SPORTS CLUB? Want to know more about the new law? We're considering running a workshop specifically for clubs. Contact us to find our more.

Want to know more? Interested in booking?

These workshops are open to local groups. Any two Committee members can attend, provided that those Committee members are not lawyers, accountants or paid advisors to the sector. Bookings can be made by emailing communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz.

Rangiora Museum

Sunday afternoon meeting!

Join us in our cosy Museum on Sunday 27 July, 29 Good Street, Rangiora, behind the Bowling Club, 2pm for the following interesting presentation.

David Laird, who recently had an article printed in the Press, titled “Trees much more than mulch!”. David is a sustainable woodworker and qualified carpenter who creates beautiful furniture from end of life trees. He says one third of timber from a mature tree could be milled and made into 16 pieces of furniture while trees and branches could be mulched and smaller branches were perfect for wood turning. He has specialised in transforming Elm and Oak trees utilising traditional knowledge about milling, seasoning and steam bending timber when combined with some modern methods. There will be samples of his work on display along with a photo presentation.

David was raised in Rangiora and was an accomplished rugby player who played for senior teams and also travelled to Scotland to play rugby.

All welcome, and no need to book. Free, although donations appreciated from nonmembers of the Rangiora Early Records Society.

Afternoon tea served and our community chat. The Museum is open Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30 to 4pm.
