Greetings from the Editor

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Waimakariri, with the iconic town centre Christmas Trees to be erected any day, lights being strung across mainstreets and frosting on the shop windows. Across our neighbourhoods houses are lit up with displays that are worthy of feature in any feel-good Christmas movie. The annual Soroptomist Christmas Tree festival is about to start, with a delightful array of trees, loving decorated by volunteers, children, business owners and local organisations. To me, the festival is pure delight, with the Council foyer filled with a steady stream of children and adults alike marvelling at the variety and creativity of the displays.

I always think that the simple things bring the most joy. Too often the Christmas message of hope and joy is lost in the rush of life, the pressure of consumerism and the need to have everything perfect in time for the ‘big day’.

It’s been a tough year and for those who are struggling financially, pressure to buy gifts and treat their family can result in an empty post-Christmas bank account. Food banks can be stretched more than usual after Christmas, right when the community’s festive generosity has abated. Please consider adding a few extra items to

your grocery cart and putting them in the donation bins at the supermarket.

Every year, many of us make New Year’s resolutions. How about a Christmas resolution? Less focus on spending and more on joy and inexpensive but thoughtful ways to bless people. Putting the welcome mat out for someone who might otherwise be alone.

Remember, too, to take care of yourself and if life gets a bit overwhelming, reach out to a trusted confidant or call 1737.

Take a breath and fill your cup. For me, there is nothing quite like the quiet of a midnight Christmas Eve Carol Service, with all the candles among the serenity of the hay filled nativity cradle, spotlit at the front of the church.

Meri Kirihimete.

Merry Christmas and thanks for your role in making a district rather special.

Tessa

Motu Move

From 10 November, people who use a standard adult fare in Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn will be able to pay simply by tagging on with a contactless debit or credit card, phone or smart watch when boarding.

This is the first step in introducing Motu Move, the new public transport payment system which will eventually be used across Aotearoa.

Here’s what you need to know:

• Standard adult fare customers have more ways to pay – tagging onto the bus or ferry with your contactless card or device is easy.

• There are no extra fees or surcharges, and you’ll pay the same as the Metrocard adult fare.

• Metrocards and cash will still be accepted until later in 2026.

Concessions (SuperGold, Community Services Card, Youth, Child and Total Mobility fares) will be available on Motu Move at a later stage. People with these concessions don’t need to do anything for now.

There’s no need to make any changes yet, unless you’d like to use a contactless payment. Otherwise, you can continue to pay as you currently do. We’ll be in touch well before any changes happen in 2026.

News update from Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc

2 November 2025

Abbeyfield Waimakariri achieves further milestone.

Building an Abbeyfield House in Rangiora is another step closer with the announcement of the first $100,000 achieved from local fundraising.

“It’s such a great milestone for us and encourages us to keep focusing on our goal of providing a purpose-built house for 14 independent seniors,” says Valda Reveley, chair of Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc.

“With help from the Waimakariri District Council we have land secured in Kingsbury Avenue, and now thanks to local supporters we’re on the first rung of the ladder in raising $350,000 from community fundraising.”

Mrs Reveley said it was expected that the completed development would cost some $4m, with it coming from a mix of fundraising, government and private sector grants and a mortgage.

Abbeyfield has 15 houses throughout New Zealand, each providing a ‘flatting for seniors’ environment of both private and shared spaces, with affordable rents including meals, power and overheads.

The Waimakariri committee, all volunteers, now awaits floorplans and an architect’s impression of what the house will look like. In the meantime, fundraising continues with a Christmas hamper raffle now on sale. Tickets are available at Abbeyfield Waimakariri stalls at various markets between now and Christmas.

Christmas just is a few days away - and a new year is around the corner! Remember what matters: Christmas is about connections, not competition. The best memories often come from laughter, kindness, and shared moments not from what’s under the tree.

Start the Year Smart – Budgeting Tips for a Fresh Start

The start of a new year is the perfect time to hit “reset” on finances and for families, it often comes with extra costs: school fees, uniforms, stationery, and extracurricular activities.

While it’s exciting to plan for the year ahead, these expenses can add up quickly if we’re not prepared.

At BSNC, we see how easy it is to feel the financial pinch after the holidays. BSNC helps families start the year confidently with planning and practical strategies and without stress or debt hanging over them

Quick tips to stay on track:

• List and budget: Note all expected expenses school fees, uniforms, books, and activities and work out what you can realistically afford.

• Plan for the unexpected: A small emergency “buffer” can save last-minute stress or borrowing.

• Shop smart: Compare prices, buy second-hand where possible, and take advantage of school uniform swaps or community sales.

• Get the family involved: Teach children about saving, budgeting, and prioritising it’s a valuable life lesson.

• Starting the year with a clear plan helps reduce financial stress, so you can focus on what really matters: family, learning, and creating positive memories.

BSNC provides free, confidential support to help you manage your finances and plan ahead. If you would like more information or wish to engage with a Financial Mentor, please contact us to talk about your situation.

We can help you to create your “New Year” Savings Plan. Phone 03 315 3505 or email: servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz

What is an extended warranty and do I need to buy one?

My neighbour’s holiday celebrations are too loud. What can I do?

R13 Youth Development Trust (R13) is a community based, non -governmental organisation which provides a range of free services to support and improve the quality of life of at-risk youth, youth offenders and their whanau/family in North Canterbury.

Our range of services support young people with complex challenges, including mental health issues, disengagement from education, family violence and trouble with the law. While working with us, at-risk youth gain personal development and life skills, learn how to set goals, discover their purpose, improve their well -being, develop resilience and confidence.

Our services positively influence the lives of the young people and whanau we work with by eliminating the barriers to opportunity and helping them to reach their fullest potential through the power of partnership.

R13’s mentors and youth workers support young people aged between 12 -20 years through one on one mentoring and youth work. We provide free wrap-around support to help young people identify and address their mental wellbeing, social anxiety, anger, drug and alcohol issues. We also help those who are ready to leave, or have left the school system, to set personal goals, create an action plan, learn life skills and stay motivated, as they work towards employment and a more positive life -path.

Success Story

I have been working with a client for some months. Prior to our engagement, she exhibited significant violence, aggression and struggled with building and maintaining friendships. With support from her mentor and her whanau, she has made notable progress in managing and processing her emotions. Comcol’s LEAP Programme

Update from Tutor – Sorrell Cowen

As we reach the end of our LEAP course for the year, we’re incredibly proud of how far our students have come. What began with curiosity and cautious confidence has turned into genuine skill, teamwork, and a real sense of purpose.

Over the past six months, students have strengthened their horticulture knowledge and improved their workreadiness skills.

The growth of their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving has been just as impressive as the plants they have propagated.

Our community partnerships have continued to be a major highlight. Students have learnt more about local businesses and their industries, including field trips to Bain Road Winery and Foot-hills Honey. These experiences have helped deepen their environmental awareness while also inspiring them to take the next step in their career.

We’re thrilled to announce that enrolments for our February 2026 LEAP intake are now open. The best part - it’s free for all 16-24 year olds! Spaces are limited and already filling fast, so if you know a young person who would benefit from a practical, supportive, hands-on learning environment, now is the time to get in touch.

We can’t wait to welcome a new group of learners ready to LEAP into their future. To learn more, go to our website, or email us at info.nc@comcol.ac.nz.
