MAINE TURNS 200… AGAIN MAINE BICENTENAIL CELEBRATIONS RESTART

Though Maine’s actual bicentennial was last year, the Bicentennial Commission moved signature events and programs originally scheduled for 2020 back to 2021, now that it’s 2021 we can expect to have most if not all the planned events. Tentative dates are below: • State of Maine Bicentennial Parade Presented by Poland Spring: Saturday, May 15, 2021, Cities of Auburn and Lewiston • Sailing Ships events: Summer 2021 (various dates), ports along the Maine coast • Maine200 Innovation Expo Presented by Central Maine Power: Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, Portland • Maine 200 Time Capsule sealing ceremony, Fall 2021, Location TBD

Here are a few key events in Maine’s prestatehood history: Glaciers from 115,000 years ago scrape our land and shape our coast and gulf.

Descendants of Maine’s Indian tribes arrive 13,000 years ago.

English, French, and Dutch explorers visit late in the 16th Century.

Colonization in the 17th Century brings strife and tension.

Resources to help you pay rent during the pandemic Weston Associates is aware many Americans are struggling with paying rent during this pandemic.

We want to make sure you are aware there are a couple programs specific to assisting you maintain your housing so you are not evicted for non-payment of rent. Though there is currently a moratorium in place to hold off on evictions for non-payment of rent, when the moratorium is lifted you will be still be responsible for all rent owed and if you have not payed your rent, you can be evicted.

We want all residents to be aware you may qualify for Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) Program through Maine Housing Authority if you had any loss of income, big medical or educational costs due to the pandemic. This program is very simple to apply for on-line or by paper application, you can learn more and apply online at: www.mainehousing.org As you may also be aware, the American Rescue Plan Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden recently. Part of the Act authorizes all eligible households to receive Economic Impact Payments (EIP) also called stimulus payments, of $1,400 per individual direct from the Internal Revenue Service. Most Americans are eligible for EIP payments, only households that make more than $80,000 for single filers, $120,000 for head of household filers, and $160,000 for married filing jointly will not receive any payment.

You can check the status of your EIP at the following website for the Internal Revenue Service: www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment Similar to the last two payments, these checks will not be counted as income for rent calculation. You do not need to report your EIP as additional income to the office.

New HUD Secretary

Secretary Marcia L. Fudge is the 18th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Throughout her career, she has worked to help low-income families, seniors, and communities across the country.

Secretary Fudge served as U.S. Representative for the 11th Congressional District of Ohio from 2008 to March 9, 2021. She was a member of several Congressional Caucuses and past Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. As a Member of Congress, Secretary Fudge earned a reputation of tackling the unique challenges of her district by working with her Congressional delegation and across political ideologies.

Secretary Fudge believes our housing issues do not fit into a one-size-fits-all approach. We need policies and programs that can adapt to meet a community’s unique housing challenges. She is committed to making the dream of homeownership - and the security and wealth creation that comes with it - a reality for more Americans.

Under Secretary Fudge’s leadership, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will work to eradicate the growing homelessness issue, put an end to discriminatory practices in the housing market, and ensure that our fair housing rules are doing what they are supposed to do: opening the door for families who have been systematically locked out for generations to buy homes and have a fair shot at achieving the American dream.

Secretary Fudge’s career in public service began in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, rising to the rank of Director of Budget and Finance. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business from The Ohio State University and law degree from the Cleveland State University Cleveland-Marshall School of Law. She is a Past National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a member of its Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter.

Travel in the age of COVID The US Centers for Disease Control has announced that getting fully vaccinated allows you to do more things safely and it’s important for us to provide that guidance even in the context of rising cases,” Walensky said. For shopping, eating out, domestic travel, etc people who are two weeks past their final shot do not need to get a coronavirus test before or after trips and do not need to self-quarantine after travel unless it is required by a state or local jurisdiction. That means fully vaccinated grandparents can fly to visit their healthy grandchildren without getting a coronavirus test or self-quarantining, provided they follow the other recommended public health measures, such as wearing masks on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation.
