DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

SITE ANALYSIS

WEATHER AND GROUND CONDITIONS BEING LOCATED WITHIN MANCHESTER. THE SITE FEATURES CLAY-LIKE SOIL SUGGESTING THAT THERE ARE DEEP FOUNDATIONS IN THE ORIGINAL BUILD. EXCESS RAIN DURING NINE OUT OF THE TWELVE MONTHS MEANS THAT THE SITE SHOULD DUE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE LOAD WITH ITS STABILITY. THE SITE CONTOUR SITS ON FLAT GROUND IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA AND ISN’T PRONE TO FLOODING DUE TO THE NEARBY RIVER IRWELL DUE TO TIGHTER CONTOURS AND HILLY AREAS CLOSER TOWARDS THE RIVER. SITE ACCESS IN REGARDS TO SITE ACCESS, THE BUILD IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE MAIN ROAD WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY MULTIPLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS SUCH AS THE 5-MINUTE WALK TO THE SALFORD CRESCENT TRAIN STATION, WITH BUS STOPS LOCATED DIRECTLY ON THE SITE. ALSO BEING DIRECTLY OPPOSITE THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD MAIN CAMPUS, THE SITE GIVES EASE OF ACCESS TO BOTH THE PUBLIC AND NEARBY SALFORD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WHICH WOULD MOSTLY OCCUPY THE SPACE DESIGNED SUN PATH DUE TO THE ORIENTATION OF THE SITE, THE SUNLIGHT RISES FROM THE EAST AND FALLS TO THE WEST, WITH THESE TWO POINTS IN MIND, THE FIGURE SHOWS HOW PEAK SUNLIGHT IS AT THE SOUTH POINT OF THE SITE LOCATION THEREFORE THE DESIGN SHOULD CONSIDER HAVING POINTS WITH CAN GAIN FROM THIS DIRECT, REFLECTED AND DIFFUSED LIGHT IN ORDER TO UTILISE THE NATURAL LIGHT METHOD, DOING THIS WOULD REDUCE ELECTRICAL USAGE FOR POWERING THE LIGHTS THROUGH A MECHANICAL SYSTEM IF THIS ECO METHOD IS NOT ACHIEVED.

DUE TO THE HSE RELEASING THE CONTROL OF ASBESTOS REGULATIONS 2012 ACT, THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION WOULD BE TO TEST AND REMOVE THE ASBESTOS AND REPLACE IT WITH FIBER-GLASS.

CONCEPT STATEMENT: THE CORE IDEA OF THE DESIGN IS TO BRING THE THREE SPACES TOGETHER. WITH THE INCLUSION OF THE BREWERY, THE STUDENT SPACE, AND THE BAKERY. EACH SPACE OCCUPIES DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS CONNECTED THROUGH A FEATURE THEREFORE CREATING A BUILD FOR A COMMUNITY. THIS FOLLOWS THE ETHICAL APPROACH AS NOT ONLY DOES IT BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER BUT IT ALSO INCREASES THE GENERATION OF JOBS IN A LOW EMPLOYMENT AREA. A MAIN FEATURE OF THE CONCEPT WAS TO INCORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY TO MATCH THE BID TO TURN SALFORD INTO A LOW CARBON CITY. SIMILAR TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD, THE INTRODUCTION OF LIVING WALLS INTERNALLY HELPS THIS ZERO-CARBON APPROACH. AS WELL AS FEATURES SUCH AS GLAZING OPENINGS CONTRIBUTING THE NATURAL VENTILATION, GREEN ROOFING AND RAINWATER COLLECTION. THIS IS A CONCEPT THAT IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE NEW EXTENSION BUILD.

FOCUS ON INDOOR-OUTDOOR DESIGN.

INCORPORATES TWO DESIGN STYLES FROM AN EXISTING BUILD TOWARDS A NEW BUILD. MICROBREWERY DESIGN INCORPORATING BOTH BREWERY AND A CAFE DESIGN. PRECEDENCE TOWARDS A LAYOUT IDEA. THE OPEN OUTDOOR AREA COULD BE FEASIBLE IN REGARDS TO SUNLIGHT ACCESSING A HIGHER OUTDOOR AREA THAT AVOIDS THE SHADING.

The main structure of the building is Timber therefore its included in the new extension build which creates a lightweight stable structure. In terms of the windows, the use of double glazing as an alternative to single glazed windows could manage a warmer internal temperature also reducing the outdoor noise. Lastly, incorporating a minimal green roof construction on the new extension is beneficial because it acts as thermal comfort also works as a sustainable water drainage.

The use of green walls behind the staircase deliverers a brighter eye-catching entrance to the visitors.

Floor plan shows the rendered materials including rendered images of the main space within the building; this includes the café seating area, the main entrance including the staircase, the bar seating area and lastly, the entrance area of the toilets. Moreover, each rendered image clearly shows the materials explained on the material board added in a context including a few people.

The original door has been changed into a floor to ceiling window in order to access natural sunlight and natural ventilation into the WC entrance area.

The use of floor to ceiling windows on the upper floor waiting area provides a good amount of lighting to the entire space also natural plants been added to provide a fresh air.
