This year was an INSPIRING year for the Jewish community of Greater Phoenix. From shaping the lives of young adults to supporting those in crisis around the world, from strengthening the Jewish identities of youth to ensuring that seniors in our community continue to live independently and with dignity, the work of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and our partners transcends age, gender, geography, politics and levels of religious observance. At our core, we are committed to building community and raising the funds needed to support the critical programs and services relied upon by our local and extended Jewish community. As we strive to meet these needs, Federation touches, changes and saves lives. In this Annual Report we spotlight some of the year’s most exciting and impactful achievements. Read on to learn about the ways in which we are using our collective vision, and your support, to help build a stronger Jewish future for our children and our children’s children. Violins of Hope was the largest ever collaborative event to take place in our community. Through this Federation project, 24,000 students in Arizona learned about the Holocaust and more than 200 teachers across the state attended Violins of Hope professional development workshops. Whether these pages are your first introduction to our work or you have been a dedicated supporter for decades, we hope this report inspires you to further engage with our Jewish community through Federation. We are grateful to the many who have engaged with us, given Jewishly and made Federation part of your life. Thank you for making all of this possible.

Sincerely,

Marty Haberer President & CEO

Mark Feldman Board Co-Chair

HELPING

Jews in Need Ester first left Ethiopia with her parents when she was six. Their attempt to walk to Israel through Sudan failed, and she spent years in a refugee camp. At 12, Ester was adopted and brought to Israel, where her life remained difficult in many ways. By the time she saw her birth parents again, her father no longer recognized her. Ester overcame her trauma and today, mentors other at-risk youth. She connects with them over three years, develops a strong relationship and helps them learn coping and study skills that build selfesteem and engagement. Ester also works with the youths’ schools and families to build a supportive community that nurtures her young mentees. I’ve met many children in whom I see myself. I tell them,

‘Look me in the eyes. If I, as a little girl, succeeded to change things in my life just by the power of my will, then anyone can. Let me help you.’ I never give up on a child. To me, every child is a little Ester.

Ester is a mentor in The Jewish Agency for Israel Youth Futures program. The program is funded by Federation and operates in 36 cities across all sectors of Israeli society. Our community’s own Rachel Hoffer is North America board chair for Youth Futures.

ENRICHING

Senior Lives

Allan, 79, had struggled to attend his beloved Chabad dinners when it became more difficult to drive. He’d often try to have a friend drive him, but he didn’t want to be a bother. It was at a Chabad dinner that Allan learned of the Federation’s Senior Rides program. Since then, Allan has been using the service to attend more dinners and religious services. He is overjoyed that he no longer has to rely on his friends. Through laughter, he shared how ironic it is that he learned about the program at a Chabad dinner and now uses the program to get to Chabad dinners, where his drivers often join him.

“I have never driven with anyone who isn’t cheerful, enjoyable and amazing at communicating. It’s more than just being on time. The drivers are truly interested in the lives of their riders—that’s the difference.” The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix Senior Rides Program, in partnership with Envoy America, serves Jewish seniors who are unable to drive and who do not have the means to pay for transportation.

BUILDING

Community Jason receives residential services for adults with disabilities through Gesher Disability Resources. He lives in Shalom House, one of the homes owned and managed by the agency. He enjoys the fellowship of his housemates and the variety of activities offered, describing them as “lots of fun.” As a resident, Jason and his roommates enjoy frequent outings to places like museums, the zoo, and hosting other Gesher members at Shalom House for social group gatherings. Activities that strengthen Jewish life are also important to Jason such as attending Simchat Shabbat each month and working out at the JCC. He really enjoys attending the annual community Purim carnival too. Gesher’s housing and programs provide Jason with quality experiences that he really appreciates. Jason likes doing things for himself with the support of caring staff and quality programs. He takes pride in his work at a second-hand store and confidence in the friendships he has developed. The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix is proud to fund and partner with Gesher Disability Resources in providing a variety of services that help create bridges between the disability community and the Jewish community.

ENGAGING the

Next Generation Leah had a strong Jewish upbringing. She attended Jewish day school, played at the JCC and traveled to Israel. She met her husband at a Federation NowGen event and, together, they attended BJE’s Baby University. Now their children are the lucky recipients of PJ Library books filled with Jewish values and delivered to their home monthly. As a member of Jewish Federation of North America’s National Young Leadership Cabinet, she visited a Jewish overnight camp in Hungary, and learned about the work Federation is doing in Venezuela. Leah feels strongly about her support of Federation:

The Jewish moments sprinkled throughout my life have fostered an unbreakable connection to my Jewish community that will shape my future. I am not giving BACK, I am GIVING FORWARD.

WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY This year, we included our women donors in our overall Financial Resource Development Giving roll, instead of listing them separately. These women contributed in their own name and connect through our traditions of tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedakah (doing justice). Each woman’s gift recognizes that Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh L’Zeh – all Jews are responsible for each other and for the world in which we live. These are the giving societies of Women’s Philanthropy:

LION OF JUDAH SOCIETY $5,000+ Symbolizing the strength of Jewish women, this national giving society is 17,000 women strong. With a financial commitment of $5,000 or more to the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, our Lions are shining examples of caring for those in need and building a vibrant Jewish community. They are honored at recognition events and the national Lion of Judah Conference.

POMEGRANATES $1,800-4,999 This national recognition society encourages and recognizes women who support Federation at the $1,800 giving level. Its significance stems from the Jewish tradition of the pomegranate with 613 seeds, one for each of the mitzvot or commandments found in the Torah. Each Pomegranate provides strength, compassion and inspiration for our community.

PEARL SOCIETY $180-1,799 Pearl women contribute a minimum of $180 to the Federation, strengthening Jewish life and identity while providing for Jews in need locally, in Israel and worldwide. They, like a pearl, will grow in strength and luster for our community.

ENDOW YOUR GIFT Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) A Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) is a permanent fund dedicated to endowing your Annual Campaign gift to the Jewish community. A PACE fund is a lasting legacy that will continue to make an annual gift to the Annual Campaign in perpetuity on your behalf.

Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) The Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) is a key part of the Lion of Judah program. Through LOJE, Jewish women strengthen the Jewish community by providing funds to meet needs at home, in Israel and around the world. By endowing her gift, a Lion ensures that her support for the work of Federation continues even after she is gone.

Life & Legacy The Federation is one of 12 local Jewish organizations that participates in the Life & Legacy endowment program. It is sponsored by the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenix in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and educates the Jewish community about after-life giving.

For more information about these endowment opportunities, please contact endowment@jewishphoenix.org.
