Jewish Community Association Welcomes New President & CEO It is an honor to be the first President and CEO of the Jewish Community Association of Greater Phoenix. I am very excited about the future of the JCC and the creation of the Association. Having spent over 25 years working for and leading JCC’s, I am passionate about what JCC’s do to enrich the lives of individuals, families and what they do to build and sustain healthy and vibrant communities.

Programs and services provided by JCC’s are the entry point and key connection for so many into the Jewish community, into exploring Judaism in their own way. We are uniquely positioned to meet Jews on their own terms and help them inspire their own Jewish Journey while also welcoming non-Jews into our community to experience all the JCC can provide.

I look forward to working with the staff, lay leaders and the community to continue the wonderful programs and services we provide, make improvements where needed and innovate and expand our impact. Over the first year we will be focusing on creating the structure of the new Association, determining priorities and evaluating our operating models. We will explore the programs we provide and/or new collaborations with others to broaden and deepen the engagement of our community.

In the coming months I look forward to being able to provide a clearer vision and more details. We will keep you posted along this new journey. I look forward to getting started and diving head first, heart and soul into this great community.

Literacy Links

The ECC introduces a new early literacy program

When most of us reminisce about Kindergarten, we conjure up images of blissful days filled with delicious snacks, playtime with new friends, and joyful singing. It was simply a time of pure imagination and excitement as we settled into the world of elementary school. Today’s Kindergarten classrooms look surprisingly different. Children are still given opportunities to play, sing, and use their imaginations. However, with the implementation of full day Kindergarten, children are also being taught to read, write and understand basic math. Many students leave Kindergarten having discovered the joy of reading at a very young age. The word Kindergarten is from the German language and means “garden for children.”

Today’s Kindergartens have truly become a place for children to not only bloom socially, but also academically.

The National Institute for Literacy, an agency used by the federal government, conducted a synthesis of the most scientific research

available on the development of early literacy skills. In 2009, the panel published a comprehensive guide outlining the factors that serve as predictors of later literacy success. The JCC Early Childhood Center has taken a strong interest in this research and therefore has implemented a new program called Literacy Links to ensure that their students are learning these skill sets. “We believe that every child deserves the best possible start,” says Dani Hibert, Co-director of the Early Childhood Center. “It starts with a warm, nurturing, environment where children feel safe. We encourage our children to explore, discover and learn new things every day.”

The Literacy Links program, developed by Reading Specialist Jill Leshin, M. Ed. in conjunction with the Traveling Tutor, LLC provides fun, meaningful early literacy instruction for preschool aged children while simultaneously providing exceptional professional development for preschool teachers and a strong link between home and school for parents. Leslie Benjamin, Literacy Links teacher, visits every pre-kindergarten classroom twice a week to teach an early literacy lesson and will begin teaching in the threes classes in January. Leslie Benjamin, M. Ed. previously taught Kindergarten at Jess Schwartz Elementary School and has over 16 years of teaching experience.

The Literacy Links program teaches students the skills that research has proven to help children be successful in Kindergarten and beyond. The lessons are enjoyable, highly interactive, and are often taught by friendly puppets. In addition to teaching the children, the program also caters to the needs of the parents. An E-Newsletter goes home every month so that parents can stay fully informed. Children wear a sticker home that provides parents with a relevant activity to do with their children. “Parents absolutely love having that resource at their fingertips,” says Deena Boone, Co-director of the ECC. “The kids are learning and having fun in this program which is always our goal here at the Early Childhood Center and the parents are learning how to help facilitate the learning process at home for their children.”

Furthermore, teachers are gaining exceptional professional development from this program. Literacy Coach, Leslie Benjamin, models strong early literacy instruction for the teachers while educating the children. The classroom teachers actively participate in the Literacy Links lessons along with their students. “It is a win-win for everyone. The children love it, the parents are staying informed, and the teachers are getting professional development hours during their school day,” says Deena Boone. Literacy Links also provides teachers with engaging, developmentally appropriate follow-up activities to use with their students throughout the week. “Often you will

see children grabbing one of the Literacy Links Stations during playtime,” says Pre-Kindergarten teacher Tammy Rosen. “Children are like little sponges at this age. They love to learn new things. The Literacy Stations are playful and they make learning fun. ” The Early Childhood Center believes providing a loving, nurturing, safe environment for the children is top priority. They also feel that giving children the educational benefits of a strong early literacy foundation is a necessary step in preparing them for the new rigors of Kindergarten. The Early Childhood Center stands behind developmentally appropriate practice and strongly adheres to methods research indicates children learn best during the formative years.

In addition to the Literacy Links program, students can register for Pre-K Academy and Pre-K Academy Junior. Pre-K Academy is an afternoon, academic enrichment program that teaches reading readiness skills, pre-writing skills and early mathematical concepts through creative movement, music, fitness, science, and art classes.

“Pre-K Academy focuses on building healthy minds and healthy bodies through our highly active, child-centered curriculum,” says Jill Leshin, M. Ed., founder of Pre-K Academy. Little Hands

You do not usually think that your daughter will go to college, work as a veterinarian technician, and then want to serve for our country in the U.S. Army. That is exactly what my daughter, Casie decided to do. She completed basic training and then followed that with the completion of Army Intelligence Analysis training.

Presently, Casie is based in Wiesbaden, Germany. She was on the list four times to be deployed to Afghanistan.

Each time, her name “fell off� of those lists. The last one was just around Thanksgiving, before the holidays. It was a great holiday gift for me!

My name is Sharon Phillips and I teach Pre-Kindergarten at the ECC. My room parents wanted to do something for those serving in our armed forces. They asked if they could collect items to be mailed to Casie for her and others serving with her. I was very honored.

Many families donated food, snacks, health supplies and magazines. The children in class were so excited to

be collecting the items and helped pack them up. We spoke about where they were going and who they were going to help. They also made cards and pictures for the soldiers. The heavy boxes were shipped to Germany. It took months for her to receive them. Casie was so very appreciative of everything when she opened the four over-stuffed boxes. Many items were shared amongst those stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. Casie did not hesitate to send the boxes to friends presently serving in Afghanistan.

The soldiers sent my class pictures of themselves holding the items from our families and the cards created by the children. The children were so excited to see the impact they made on so many lives overseas.

Summer Camp - Lets go Surfing!

Get amped while catching some air or gliding through a barrel. Some of these surf terms have you curious? Want to learn all about the sport and travel to San Diego to get hands on experience? This Surf Camp is for you! OTG Surf Camp is a 2 week camp for our 5 - 8 graders. The first week consists of in- town field trips and activities. The next week is where surf camp 101 begins! We leave first thing Monday morning and set our sights for La Jolla, CA. We will be immersing ourselves in surf culture as we get to know fellow La Jolla JCC surf campers. Our week will kick off with a BBQ and a pool party.

First thing Tuesday morning we will be heading to the beach. We will be learning how to surf every morning from Tuesday until Friday. Each day we will have four hours of instruction and surfing. Each night, we will explore La Jolla and San Diego. This camp will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. The waves will be bombin’ so lets go catch some beach break! BBYO Stands Up Against Bullying evident throughout the rest of the year as BBYO continues to give them the tools to do so.

BBYO teens have made making the Jewish community a safe, inclusive, and bully-free place a top priority through their actions, advocacy, and the Stand UP for Each Other Campaign. In January at the BBYO professional staff conference, 110 BBYO professionals joined the teens in standing up.

We took the National Education Association’s Bully Free: It Starts with Me Pledge. The pledge recognizes the important role a caring adult can play in the life of a teen. Our goal is to have 1,000 Jewish community professionals take this pledge. Here in Mountain Region, we have reached out to our network of over 30 volunteer advisors to take the pledge and make a difference in the life of a bullied teen.

In August of 2011, at the beginning of our programming year, Mountain Region BBYO made a very important decision that would dictate the impact made by the region throughout a few different communities. A vote was taken, and the voice of the teens was heard. Mountain Region decided to take a stance on bullying prevention, an idea suggested by a teen from Las Vegas, and to declare it as the cause around which we would center our social action efforts for the year.

One caring adult can keep a bullied student from dropping out of school. One caring adult may save a bullied student’s life. Please invite your networks (coworkers, alumni, parents, and other partners) to join BBYO staff as we strive to identify 1,000 caring adults who will take the pledge — to listen to bullied teens that approach you and take action to stop the bullying. The NEA and BBYO can provide you with free resources to help support your teens.

Take the Bully Free Pledge and share with your network of caring adults. Together, we can make a difference.

Since that vote, Mountain Region has taken great strides to make an impact through the lens of bullying prevention on a variety of levels. At our Fall Convention in October, I had the privilege of leading a program along with my co-Vice President of Judaism & Community Service in order to educate our teens about the negative effects of bullying. Most recently, at our Spirit Convention just weeks ago over MLK Weekend, we brought in a well known speaker from the Phoenix area, Mark Trombino, to educate the region on the issue at hand and to empower the teens to take action to prevent bullying at their own schools. Liora Fiksel, a Phoenix teen, said that “Mark inspired me to take it upon myself to put a stop bullying in any situation, at any time”. Mountain Region teens are now prepared and motivated to make real change in their communities and stand up for those who are victims of bullying, and this will be

Jr. Suns 2012 Recap

For the future we hope to continue the success with the Jr. Suns program and keep enrollment high while maintaining a high level of satisfaction with the organization and overall fun in the league.

Our next season will be in August of 2012 with intentions to exceed expectations of all.

It is with great pleasure to announce how much of a success this latest Jr. Suns season has become. The latest number of participants has shown an increase near 100% and would not have been possible without the help of the Fiesta Bowl Charities. In addition to the support of the Fiesta Bowl, this program would not be as successful without the constant support of the parent volunteers who help coach and coordinate the teams.

As the season continues, it is enjoyable to not only watch the kids play basketball but also their growth as an individual and team player. The emphasis on the league is fun and skill building, which is stressed to all of the coaches throughout the season. At the end of the season there will be a skills competition across the age groups and prizes will go out to the winner’s, courtesy of the Howard Levey Memorial Foundation. Furthermore, the championship games for the older groups will be held at the US Airways center, home of the Phoenix Suns.

The affair took place at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess with the highlight of the evening being the presentation to Fran and Al Sachs who received the 2012 Irv Shuman Award for Philanthropy. This award was named for a special donor who was taken from us too soon. It was presented by Judi Gottschalk, widow of Robert Gottschalk, last year’s recipient. Warmth spread throughout the room when Fran and Al Sachs spoke of their love for their family and community. They shared that tzedakah is an important part of their lives, their four children and 13 grandchildren.

The Gala for Good supports children’s programs and scholarships and this year netted more than $100,000. The money raised impacts hundreds of lives. It allows more children to receive an enriching and educational camp experience. It allows a single mom to return to work and know that her child will receive a nurturing and quality preschool education. And, it provides the little extras for Club J afterschool program and youth sports leagues… important items that cannot always be included in the operating budget.

You’ve probably seen or heard all the construction going

What you might not know, the cost of all of these projects; from the solar roofing, solar canopy parking, the tunnel being dug for the electric charging stations that will be on the Campus parking lot, and the change-out from chlorine to salt water in the Campus pool is not costing the Campus or any of the non-profit organizations housed in the facility any additional cost.

With 400 solar canopy parking spaces and thermal energy to provide hot water for the 150,000 square foot facility, it is estimated the Campus will reduce its energy bills by 11 percent. The Campus chose Green Choice Solar and Arizona Solar Concepts because both were able to obtain funding through investors and tax incentives without impacting the Campus financially. The Campus is also partnering with ECOtality to host four electric-car charging stations as part of a transportation infrastructure study.

In August 2011, the Campus, home to seven non-profit organizations, contracted with local businesses for two major solar projects. When completed, these projects will provide electricity, heated water, covered parking and electric vehicle charging stations. The Campus will have undergone the

April 16 - 19 | In Campus lobby Photo display of Jewish War Veterans to Honor their Contributions Film - The Rescuers Wednesday, April 18 | 6:30 pm The Rescuers, the latest film from Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Michael King, uncovers the largely unknown stories of 13 heroic and courageous diplomats who, at tremendous personal cost, saved tens of thousands of Jews during World War II. The film follows Stephanie Nyombayire, a young Rwandan anti-genocide activist who lost 100 members of her family in the Rwandan Genocide of the 1990s, and Sir Martin Gilbert, the renowned 20th century and Holocaust historian, as they travel across 15 countries and three continents interviewing survivors and descendants of the diplomats.

Often going against their own government policies, many of the World War II diplomats, who were not Jewish, willingly sacrificed their careers, families and livelihood, working desperately to save people they didn’t know. Their actions raise the question of the mystery of goodness. What leads one person and not another, to do the right thing regardless of the consequences they may face? 10 am | An American Soldier Witness to the Holocaust Harry Adler | Harry will tell his story as a German Jewish refugee and his return to Europe as an American G.I. Harry was born in Berlin, Germany in 1924 and left in 1932, a year before Hitler came to power, to live in Paris, France where he spent his youth and went to school until 1940. The Adler family escaped to southern France when the Germans occupied the northern part of the country and then arrived in the US at the age of 19. Despite the fact that Harry spoke little English, he graduated from George Washington High School in NYC. Harry became a translator and was asked to visit an “enclosed barbed wire camp” nearby which was Buchenwald. Harry will describe what he saw and the lessons to be learned from the Holocaust.

Freddie Lieberman | March 2012 Beggining March 6th, Freddie Lieberman, a local awardwinning contemporary artist, has had a paintbrush in her hand for most of her life. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois, she taught art for a few years before starting her own business designing and painting wall graphics, murals, faux finishes on walls and furniture and later portrait chairs and benches, freestanding life-size celebrities and pet portraits. Six years ago she followed a long held dream to do contemporary canvas paintings. Immediate success confirmed this decision and now her intensely colored resin coated paintings adorn the walls of her many collectors and admirers.

Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy at VOSJCC

The VOSJCC would like to welcome Ian Chapple to our Wellness team. Stop by the second floor to introduce yourself and schedule an assessment. Ian Chapple grew up in South Africa and came over to the United States to play Division I soccer. He earned his degree in a Master’s in Physical Therapy from the University Of Louisville in 2000. Married with four beautiful children, he has lived in Arizona for the last 11 years. He has continued his passion for sports and fitness by coaching junior soccer and is an avid distance runner breaking the 3-hour barrier in Boston, 2011.

Ian specializes in sports physical therapy with an emphasis in human movement/ or manual therapy, biomechanical analysis, custom orthotic prescription, and the treatment of sports related injuries. His treatment philosophy is functional, utilizing prescriptive corrective strengthening and flexibility exercises. He has experience with athletes and the active population at all levels.

Ian has also specialized in the biomechanics of the foot and ankle and custom orthotics and has prescribed custom orthotics for numerous PGA professional golfers.

Ian’s passion is treating and educating patients of all levels to gain a better understanding of their body to be able to function at their greatest potential in life.

Program Launch & Going Green Day

Trivia Night 2012 - Free To Be You and Me

On Sunday, January 8 the VOSJCC had its Program Launch & Going Green Day vendor fair. The morning started with the Active Adult Brunch, sponsored by Affordable Homecare Solutions & Belmont Village, where over 80 adults got to schmooze, learn about upcoming programs and hear from the sponsors. It was a great start to the morning. The Going Green Day fair was full of buzz and excitement. There was a farmer’s market, children’s bird house making and electric cars in the parking lot. Jim Lane, the Mayor of Scottsdale joined us for a ribbon cutting ceremony to signify the going green facility changes of the JCC. The roof will have solar panels and the pool is the first commercial pool in Scottsdale with a salt water system. Popchips were a big hit, as well as the other vendors that provided interesting information on how they are green.

January 21 marked the most important (and most fun) fundraiser of the year for the JCC Early Childhood Center. The 10th Annual Trivia Night, Free To Be You and Me event raised funds to help provide the school with improvements that will enrich our children’s lives.

The event is packed with current and former parents that come to have fun each year, even after their children have graduated! In addition, to the not so trivial trivia, the silent and live auctions are a don’t miss. Each year, the events sells out and brings in a record number of supporters!

The much needed funds raised will have a positive impact on the environment where our children spend much of their early years. Money raised enables the Parent Teacher Group to provide lasting and substantial improvements in the ECC. The ECC would like to thank the wonderful Trivia Night Chairs, committee, volunteers and all of the generous sponsors. Thank you for making Trivia Night 2012 a memorable success!

Tu B’Shevat There was a consensus among the children that visited the Israel Center table during the JNF Tu B’Shevat festival— that a 3-D book of pictures from Israel is extremely cool.

Children that visited the Israel Center table were asked to find the answer for trivia questions about the seven species that grow in Israel (Wheat, Barley, Grape, Fig, Pomegranate, Olive and Date) in exchange for a free raffle ticket for a 3-D book about Israel. To find the answers for the trivia questions the children had to look all around the festival grounds to find stations that represent the seven species and contain the answers. Each station was in an appropriate place for the specie it represented. For example the olive station was near an olive oil press demonstration and the grape was near the wine tasting area. Children who completed the trivia game also collected stickers for each of the seven species.

Also on Tu B’Shevat - The festival included a tree planting ceremony. A pomegranate tree was donated to JNF by Zvida Growers and dedicated in the memory of Jeffery Berkowitz. His family donated the tree to the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus where it has been planted alongside trees of the seven species that are present on the grounds of the campus.

Sweetheart Dance Mountain Region BBYO hosted their annual Sweetheart Dance this past Saturday, February 11 at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society in Phoenix. The dance, planned by Hannah Grabowsky (Shapiro BBG) and Jesse Rozio (Frankfurter AZA) was a great success! Approximately 100 teens from Phoenix and Tucson came out and danced the night away. The teens nominated Thea Shulman (Shapiro BBG) and Jordan Curwin (Frankfurter AZA) as this year’s Sweetheart King and Queen. After being crowned, Thea and Jordan participated in a celebratory dance. We are already getting excited for next year’s dance!

Scottsdale Water Polo The third annual Scottsdale Winter Open was held on January 28-29 and was hosted by the JCC. We had 8 teams total, 3 from Scottsdale Water Polo and ASU, 2 from Team Vegas/ Henderson, New Mexico and Calgary Masters. There were some exciting moments as team Vegas/Henderson A beat our Scottsdale A team in the final game by 2 goals, while ASU beat Scottsdale B for third place.

Peter Pan

The JCC’s Youth Theater Program has completed another successful theater production, Disney’s Peter Pan performed Thursday, February 2. It was a huge success with a crowd over 150 guests entertained by our talented and theatrical cast. Our encore show, Saturday, February 4, was also a hit with a smaller, more intimate crowd.

The show was directed by the marvelous and talented Don Crosby who has also directed many other productions here at the JCC such as The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Cast members showed real dedication and determination with a demanding and exhausting five month rehearsal schedule. Their hard work and efforts really paid off.

A very special thank you to all the wonderful parent volunteers that worked back stage, helped make costumes and sets, ushered and helped out in any way they could. JCC Theater wouldn’t be what it is today without our wonderful parents!

Chocolate Espresso Torte for Passover • 1 cup butter or margarine

• 1 cup sugar + 1 Tbsp. sugar • 1 cup espresso + 2 Tbsp. espresso ** • 16 oz. semisweet chocolate (large package) • 6 eggs, plus • 6 egg yolks • confectioner’s sugar (garnish) NOTE: can use margarine if good quality ** brewed espresso or very strong coffee Preheat oven to 325o. Grease 9” spring form pan. Place wax paper on bottom of pan. Grease and flour (use Passover cake meal to dust the pan); set aside.

Place butter, sugar and espresso in the top of a double boiler and heat until sugar dissolves. Pour hot liquid over chocolate and stir until dissolved; set aside. Beat eggs and yolks until frothy; add to the chocolate mixture and pour into pan.

Bake for 1 hour; edges should crack slightly. Remove from oven and cool; cover and refrigerate. Remove from pan and sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar (must be kosher for passover) IMPORTANT: this cake is rich and has no flour. It is almost as creamy as cheesecake. You should only serve tiny thin slices. When you remove this cake from the oven it looks like it is NOT set; and it isn’t. It MUST go in the refrigerator at least for 12 hours; SO MAKE AHEAD OF TIME.

Q: How often do you exercise?

A: Three or four times a week Q: When do you prefer to exercise?

A: E arly mornings – if I wait until later in the day, there’s always something that keeps me at my desk.

Q: Do you have a specific workout routine?

A: I follow the personal plan created by Coach Tim Tyree. I don’t have to think about the work out; he adjusts it as I improve in strength and ability.

Q: What improvements have you noticed?

A: I worked out for several months, then began a combination de-tox and no carb/no sugar diet and continued weight training and cardio. The weight training helped me tone and sculpt while losing weight.

Q: What is your favorite piece of equipment & why?

A: I prefer free weights.

Q: Who or what motivated you to begin your exercising routine?

A: M y son began training with Coach Tyree at another gym. We were pleased when Coach Tyree moved to JCC because the facility is superior to anything in the area. Since I was already driving one son, I added training for my younger son and started my own training.

Q: Who has been your biggest supporter when it comes to your exercise program?

A: M y son Mark and I agreed we would work out at 5 am during the school year because that was the only time he had to train. I get up early for him and he gets up early for me. And neither one of us wants to no-show to Coach Tyree!

Q: How long have you been a member of the JCC? A: W e’ve been members since January 2011, but we were members several years ago and dropped our membership when we moved north. It’s great to be back.

Q: Why do you feel it is beneficial to be a member of the JCC? A: Th e JCC is more than a gym; it’s a community of all kinds of activities, events, fitness and health options and enlightenment.

It’s all there for those who want to participate. We are getting ready to try some new things and start our second season of the basketball league. My son Riley loves the café. The menu is wonderful.

Q: What is your workout philosophy?

A: Being fit is not a choice. It’s a requirement to succeed in everything else.

december Dan Indech

Since as far back as Dan can remember, playing sports was his greatest passion. Whether it involved kicking a soccer ball on the field, shooting hoops on the hardwood, hitting a tennis ball on the court, running through the streets or on the track, weight training at the gym, hiking in the trails or skiing down a mountain, he has always been active and strived to be fit, strong and healthy. He is a Charter Member of the Valley of the Sun JCC and has called the J his home gym the past nine years.

He has been a member of the Maccabi USA Masters soccer team the past six years and is preparing to compete for his country in my fourth Maccabiah games. The all-star team of Jewish soccer players from around the country travels to Sao Paolo, Brazil at the end of December to compete against Israel, England, Argentina, Brazil and Peru. In preparation for this multi-sport extravaganza, he has trained rigorously at the JCC with his trainer Noel and on his own. He plays weekly with two local club teams, has attended three weekend training camps in NYC the past six months, trains frequently at a soccer complex, runs on the track at Chapparel high school and climbs Camelback mountain at least once a week.

The VOSJCC is the hub for his training and he can often be found kicking his ball in the racquetball court or on the gym floor.

The past four years, he has also participated with the hugely successful JCC Maccabi Boys Soccer program as an assistant coach.

The key to succeeding as an older player (he’s 48) in a young man/ women’s sport is to maintain a high level of strength and cardio fitness, stretch a lot and play safely.

By day, he is a practicing Periodontist in Phoenix. Dan spends the rest of his time with his family and friends.

Hillary Alpert

Elissa is a Fit JCC Mom. She is frequently spotted in the fitness center after she drops her son Carter, age 5, at the ECC, and her daughter Molly, age 2, in Kids Club.

Hillary Alpert has been a Charter Member of the JCC since we opened our new Campus doors almost 10 years ago.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Hillary and her husband Bob are regularly seen training at the JCC fitness center with their personal trainers. They are proud parents to their 11-year-old daughter Falan, who has taken the lead of her fit parents, by training and competing as a nationallevel equestrian athlete.

Hillary’s fitness routine consists of intense weight training twice a week that is combined with a 6-day cardio plan that involves running and hiking. She also enjoys the JCC movement studio for Pilates training.

Hillary is able to keep focused on her fitness routine by enjoying the rewards that her regular training brings… More energy, a tighter physique and overall wellness, are all things that she loves about living a fit lifestyle. Hillary is a firm believer of eating clean and making fitness part of her everyday life.

Hillary’s fitness goals for 2012 are to try new routines, stay balanced and healthy and to continue to be a positive role model for her daughter while living an active and fit lifestyle.

Originally from Charlotte, NC, Elissa, who is a freelance Graphic Designer & Independent Consultant for Arbonne International, has been married to her husband Greg for almost 9 years. They both fell in love with Arizona while attending U of A. The Browns’ have been JCC members for 5 years. When working out, Elissa tries her best to squeeze in as many group fitness classes as possible. One of her favorites is Kim Ohlinger’s Cycle Class.

She has trained with Group Fitness Director and Personal Trainer Lisa Robins for almost 2 years. “Since training with Lisa, I’ve looked differently at meal plans and workout routines,” Elissa adds, “I’ve learned what my body responds to and what works best for ME.” Elissa credits her successful fitness plan to a balanced routine.

“I try to work out 4-5 days a week, for 1-2 hours at a time and reward myself by taking the weekends off”, she explains. She also strives to be a fit and healthy role model for her family.

Elissa is a firm believer that fitness is a lifestyle and positive results come with time. In the future, she hopes to complete a half or full marathon. “I’m honored that you’ve selected me to be a JCC Fit Mom which proves the fact that hard work really does pay off.”

We are creating a community mosaic with Israeli artists!

From January 31st February 5th, close to 400 children and teens participated in a special art project that was sponsored by the local Jewish Association in the framework of the TIPS (Tucson, Israel, Phoenix, Seattle) partnership. The relationship between the three American Jewish communities and two areas in Israel – the small town of Kiryat Malachi and the rural region of Hof Ashkelon (the Ashkelon Coast) – was created to strengthen the connection between American Jews and Israelis.

Hof Ashkelon, a region that often suffers from missiles fired from Gaza, by outfitting bomb shelters. Other TIPS projects include providing leadership programs for teens in Kiryat Malachi and empowering youth and young adults to help better themselves and their communities.

TIPS was also designed to promote people-to-people interaction between Israelis and American communities. Delegations from the Phoenix community often visit the partnership region, while ambassadors from the region visit the Phoenix community to conduct programs and educate about Israel.

The two artists that visited our community came to serve as ambassadors. They visited 8 different schools and youth groups in the Valley and assisted teens and children in creating a part of the community mosaic or a small mosaic to take home. The artists are providing pieces for our mosaic that were created by Israeli children so that the final project will combine the artwork of both Israelis and Americans. The final product is still being assembled and it will be unveiled during the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration. Be sure to come see the unveiling ceremony.

Yom Ha’atzmaut | Israel at 64 Celebrating the Arts April 29 | Noon - 4 pm This year’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration focuses on Israeli arts from music to film, martial arts and let’s not forget – culinary arts. During the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration Yuval Ron, an Israeli Oscar winning musician, will perform with his Oud alongside a singer and a drummer. He will inspire us to believe in the power of music (see page 26). The hallways in the building will be filled with beautiful paintings and crafts by Israeli artists. Everyone will be invited to attend a Krav Maga lesson (Israeli martial arts used by the IDF) and experience self defense Israeli-style. Children will display their artwork depicting their connection to Israel while groups of singers from different congregations and schools will perform Israeli songs and sing about Israel. We will also be screening the movie Israel Inside, an uplifting documentary that focuses on Israel’s resilience, positivity and success as a nation. And of course, we will have Israeli food, bouncies, body art and a fun festival atmosphere. Be sure to mark your calendar and participate in celebrating Israel at 64 Through the Arts.

Despite daily challenges ranging from limited resources to security needs, Israeli creativity and inventiveness help make the world a better place.
