Investing in Vista’s Vibrant Latino Business Community
Step into Vista’s neighborhoods and you will be greeted by the sights, sounds, and flavors of our Latino business community. A sizzling plate at a family-run restaurant. Brightly colored dresses in a boutique window. The friendly wave of a local contractor on the way to a job.
These are not just businesses. They are dreams made real, families supported, and neighborhoods enriched. They bring vibrancy to our city, fuel our economy, and give Vista its unique heartbeat.
At the Vista Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to support this energy through our Latino Business Outreach Committee. This dedicated group of bilingual business owners and community leaders works to connect entrepreneurs with resources, remove barriers, and create programs that reflect the needs of the community.
In 2024, the committee helped bring Vista’s first Fiestas Patrias to life. The event was a joyful blend of music, food, and entrepreneurship. Hundreds of families came together. Dozens of local Latino-owned businesses were spotlighted. Conversations turned into connections, and connections into opportunities.
Celebrations like this are powerful. They shine a spotlight on talent and hard work. Yet the lasting change happens when those celebrations are followed by action and investment. We are thrilled to host the 2nd Annual Fiestas Patrias on September 14. Everyone is invited to attend!
While Latino-owned businesses are thriving in many ways, access to capital remains a challenge. National studies show these entrepreneurs often receive less funding from banks and investors, even when they perform as well or better than their peers.
Here in Vista, I have spoken with business owners who have used their life savings to launch their ventures, sometimes operating without access to credit. Their determination is remarkable, but determination alone should not be the deciding factor in whether a business can grow. These entrepreneurs deserve systems that help their businesses succeed.
Vista has the heart and the talent to become a model for inclusive economic growth. We have already seen what happens when we create spaces for connection and visibility. Our community
thrives when we open doors, make resources easier to access, and listen to the voices of those who are building their dreams here.
Small steps, taken together, can lead to big change. It can be as simple as making processes easier to navigate, offering information in multiple languages, or creating spaces fo conversation between decision-makers and those they serve. It can mean highlighting local success stories, so they inspire others. It can also mean building relationships that foster trust and long-term collaboration.
Vista’s Latino business community is full of passionate, hardworking people who show up for their customers, their families, and their neighbors every day. By pairing celebration with meaningful action, we can help their dreams flourish, strengthen our local economy, and keep Vista a vibrant place to live, work, and thrive.
We invite you to join us to ensure that every business in Vista is seen, celebrated, and supported.

In the Spirit of Sustainability
Think distilled spirits are just about the craft cocktail?
Think again.
Nestled on Grand Ave in Vista is an uncommon distillery with an uncommon mission: to create an exceptional vodka while making a positive impact on our planet and community. The original vision of uniting craft spirits with environmental responsibility continues to drive the team, eight years after the first release of Misadventure & Co vodka.
Initially setting out to make a whiskey, the team turned its attention to vodka, which has a shorter distillation process. While shifting their focus, the future Misadventure crew discovered that 40% of food is wasted globally. They knew they had found their unique opportunity to fulfill the primary mission by harnessing the sugars and starches abundant in baked goods as the foundation for distillation.
Misadventure represents the spirit of innovation and taking risks. “We were venturing into unknown territory – creating a sustainable, award-winning vodka from food waste – so the name is a nod to the winding, unexpected path that brought us here,” explains Jeremy Madix, Operations Consultant for Misadventure. “Sometimes the best outcomes come from trying something completely unconventional.”
“It took considerable time to develop our proprietary distillation process,” says Madix. “After distillation, the remaining byproduct – mostly fats and gluten – is sent to El Corazon Compost Facility to ensure minimal waste.” As for the true environmental impact Misadventure has achieved, Madix explains that every 24 bottles of vodka produced

sequesters the equivalent amount of CO2 as a single tree in one year. All while delivering a quality spirit for the community to enjoy.
Two years after debuting their rare vodka, Misadventure opened a speakeasy, perfectly suited for their unsuspecting location on Grand Ave. “Being in North County gives us direct access to the community we’re trying to support, and Vista has proven to be the perfect home base. Vista offers a strong sense of community, a growing network of local makers, and a population that appreciates innovation and sustainability.”
There’s always something happening at Misadventure for friends and couples looking for an adventure. The last Tuesday of the month is reserved for Poker Night, Makers Market on the first Sunday, a monthly third Monday Movie Night, and Trivia Wednesdays. On off
Thursdays, locals are encouraged to play their own vinyl on the in-house record player while engaging with other locals over tasty cocktails and an affection for music. Monthly Murder Mystery nights are among the most popular events, where people are encouraged to dress to match the evening’s theme. Live music is on offer every Friday and Saturday.
“Community is everything to us. From the moment we launched… we’ve made it our mission to support and collaborate with fellow small businesses, artists, and musicians. We’re proud to host event that bring people together, give local talent a platform, and build authentic connections – all while crafting a sustainable spirit that truly one of a kind.”
Information on purchasing Misadventure & Co vodka, locating the speakeasy, or enjoying one of the many upcoming events can be found on their website: https://misadventure.co, or calling 760-536-3271.
… we’ve made it our mission to support and collaborate with fellow small businesses, artists, and musicians.
As the summer sun begins to set and the cool breezes of fall approach, our Vista community stands at the threshold of another season of change and opportunity. While we say goodbye to the long days of summer—filled with family gatherings, local events, and vibrant business activity—we now welcome a fresh chapter that brings with it the energy of a new school year and the momentum of continued growth for our city.
Fall is more than just a change in weather; it's a season of preparation and renewal. Students across Vista are returning to school with fresh backpacks, new goals, and the support of a community that believes in their potential. At the Vista Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to play a role in that support system through programs that connect, empower, and uplift our youth.
One of the programs closest to our hearts is the Rising Star Scholarship Program. Designed to recognize and celebrate high school seniors who have overcome personal and academic challenges to rise above and thrive, the Rising Star program exemplifies our Chamber’s belief in the power of perseverance, character, and leadership.
Each month during the academic year, students from local high schools are selected by their teachers and administrators not solely for academic performance, but for embodying qualities that inspire—resilience, integrity, and commitment to making a positive impact. These students are recognized at special Rising Star breakfasts, where they are given the opportunity to share their stories and receive encouragement from community leaders and local business owners.
from the chair Betsy
At the end of the school year, selected Rising Stars are awarded scholarships to help them pursue their postsecondary goals—whether that’s college, trade school, or entering the workforce. These scholarships are made possible thanks to the generosity of our Chamber members and partners who believe in the importance of investing in future leaders.
Fall is more than just a change in weather; it's a season of preparation and renewal.
As Chair of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, I invite you—our business community, civic leaders, and residents—to stay engaged and involved. Whether it's attending Chamber events, mentoring a student, or contributing to the scholarship fund, there are so many ways we can come together to support Vista’s next generation.
This fall, let’s continue to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. Together, we can ensure that Vista remains not only a great place to live and work, but a place where young people are given the tools and encouragement to rise, succeed, and lead.
Wishing everyone a successful school year and a season filled with growth and gratitude.
Warm regards,
Betsy Heightman Chair, Vista Chamber of Commerce

Bridal Showcase
By Mary Ann Conover
“Our goal is to find the dress that makes the bride look and feel beautiful because nothing says confidence like a flattering and well-fitting dress.”
Maria Soto
Bridal Showcase has it all. With a beautiful showroom dressed in warm colors and soft textiles, they offer the latest designer collections of bridal gowns. “We want our brides to have the best selection of contemporary styles, which requires attention to trends and travel to the industry’s largest bridal shows,” says owner, Maria Soto. “It is the highlight of our year to meet with designers.”
Brides are advised to bring their Pinterest board of fashion ideas. “It gives us an opportunity to learn more about their personality and how they envision themselves walking down the aisle. Our goal is to find the dress that makes the bride look and feel beautiful because nothing says confidence like a flattering and well-fitting dress,” continues Maria.
“Building relationships is also a key part of what we do,” she adds. Being a familyowned business, we treat our clients and business associates with a personal touch. Her daughters, Yvette, Anna and Alexandra share this value as they work side by side with their mother. “We recently joined the Vista Chamber of Commerce which will be key in meeting fellow business and community members.”
Success through challenge.
In 1999 as she was looking for work, Maria answered a Help Wanted sign displayed at a nationally known bridal store. Turned away because of lack of experience, Maria went next door to a smaller bridal shop and asked if they would hire her for a two-week trial. The owner agreed. “I loved what I was doing so much, that I was hired as a salesperson,” glows Maria. “Within three months, I became a manager at Bridal Showcase.”
Years later when the owner talked about retiring, Maria proposed the idea of buying the business – becoming the new owner in 2007.
She experienced her first of several setbacks just two years later. “The recession of 2009/2010 severely hurt sales and I was behind on rent,” says Maria. “When my landlord saw my determination to stay open, he offered to forgive my outstanding rent. I promised to share his generosity with others because he changed my life on that day.”
True to her word, she has gone out of her way to make sure her customers have what they need. Perhaps the most impactful moment was when Maria and her daughters helped a bride find a dress her father could afford. Despite being very ill, he beamed with pride as he paid in cash and coins. “We sadly learned he passed away just two days after the wedding but it was an honor to be a part of this family’s story.”
Maria’s kindness came full circle after her shop and neighboring businesses were flooded in April of 2023. She was desperate to find a temporary location. That’s when her alterations expert, Cecilia, offered Maria a small space in her shop to meet with brides and their families for nearly 18 months. “How could I not,” says Cecilia. I found my best work with Maria. She gave me a chance.”
The newly renovated showroom at 1978 Hacienda Drive in Vista, officially opened in January 2025.

Friar Tux is one of Vista’s
fashion gems.
Specializing in men’s formal wear, this store, located at 1974 Hacienda Drive in Vista, ranks as the highest producing Friar Tux outlet among the company’s 24 locations in California and Las Vegas. “We are very lucky to be in Vista, says Eric Acuna, Vice President of Sales for Friar Tux. We are centrally located for customers throughout North County, San Diego and the Temecula Valley.”
Established in the year 1974, Friar Tux has emphasized excellence in customer service. All stylists are required to complete the company’s comprehensive training program – up to 60 hours - ensuring they are experts in event requirements, styles and fit. “It is an art to listen and hear what the customer is saying,” adds Eric. “When I started as a consultant 25 years ago, our color choices were mostly all black, white or ivory. Gray soon became a fashion color, followed by blue and Earth tones. Customers love the broader range of
colors and styles, but our job is to keep them focused on the most appropriate and flattering style for the occasion.”
Today, some men are a bit savvier and involved in their selections. “This is a big change from previous times when customers did not know what they were looking for,” reflects Eric. “With the help of social media, customers have the advantage of reviewing ideas online. At the same time, we love helping people who are unfamiliar with fashion wear.”
Simplifying the consultation process has always been top of mind for Mike Meskell, and Greg Goodwin, Founder and President of Friar Tux, respectively. “Because of their forward-thinking styles, we have the best technology for customer service. Our customers can have a virtual group consultation with a stylist, be fitted for their suit or tuxedo, and complete the purchase without leaving their home. The cus-
tomized virtual setting creates the feeling of being in the showroom together,” continues Eric.
Working with Children’s Hospital of Orange County, or CHOC.
“Helping customers get ready for their special day is exciting, but nothing compares to helping patients CHOC, dress for the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation Oncology Patient Ball,” says Eric. We provide formal wear for teenage patients undergoing treatment or who are in remission. They may not be able to attend their high school’s prom, so CHOC brings the prom to them.”
As the hospital website states, “From in-kind donations of dresses, tuxedos and other services to hosting the event at Marriott International properties, our corporate partners help create this unforgettable night of fun for our patients.”
“We also value working with the Vista Chamber of Commerce,” continues Eric. They truly have been a welcoming partner in helping us grow and connect within the community. Their support will open doors for us to build meaningful relationships, expand our network, and find new ways to get involved locally. At Friar Tux, a proud family-owned company, it’s been our privilege to help people look their very best for Life’s Most Photographed Moments. With the Chamber by our side, we look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.”

From Echoes to Excellence: SoundAway’s Approach to Soundproofing and
Acoustics
By Anne McDonnell
SoundAway offers acoustical and soundproofing products to improve sound quality and insulate sound for homes, businesses, and public spaces. It offers acoustic materials for everything from large industrial warehouses to small recording studios and home theaters. Acoustical and soundproofing products include door and window seals, sound blankets, and panels designed for optimal sound absorption for floors, ceilings, and walls, including outdoor areas.
Customers include contractors, architects, broadcasting and recording companies, commercial and industrial facilities, restaurants, places of worship, entertainment venues, schools and universities, homeowners, and many others throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
One typical client is a local winery that had a noisy dining area. SoundAway performed an analysis based on room dimensions to determine the best acoustic treatment to reduce loudness. The customer selected acoustic panels in the fabric and color of their choosing. The results? Says SoundAway President Alex Gomez, the owner was impressed with the look and diners are now able to enjoy their conversations without shouting over the noise.
Another example is a high school in San Diego that had residents who complained about the noise from early morning outdoor swimming practice. The school used their existing fence to install sound-control blankets. After installation, “a few residents even called to ask what happened to the training sessions! The sound reduction exceeded expectations,” says Gomez.
Conference rooms are another typical example. Echoes from sound bouncing off hard surfaces can reduce intelligibility, especially during group conference calls. One solution used by a client was to suspend Whisperwave Clouds from the ceiling. Says Gomez, “Customer placement was inspired by airplane wings and the echo has completely subsided.”
SoundAway headquarters are in Vista, and many of the products are stocked at the Vista warehouse. According to Gomez, some customers from the San Diego and Los Angeles areas appreciate the option to pick up orders in Vista. SoundAway does not offer installation, but depending on the location, may refer customers to local contractors, according to Gomez.
To support the local community, SoundAway donates to the San Diego Food Bank, local public broadcasting, and music programs in the Oceanside and Vista school districts.
Customer service is a main priority, and there is a single point of contact to provide status updates and tracking, and to resolve any issues promptly. Says Gomez, the company “supports customers from initial inquiry through project completion.” The company is a member of the distinguished Acoustical Society of America and a Better Business Bureau member with an A+ rating. “SoundAway takes the time to understand the needs of each client to recommend a solution that meets or exceeds expectations. This approach takes into account existing conditions, ambient noise, planned use of the space, and budget,” says Gomez.
With a commitment to customer satisfaction and a passion for creating comfortable, functional environments, SoundAway’s expertise and personalized approach ensure that clients have spaces where every conversation, note, and moment can truly be heard.

Dreams Really Do Come True
Duran Ranch Marketplace
Creates Community & Opportunity
By Julie Smith Taylor
Rather than dreams, maybe it’s more about miracles. Diana Duran, owner of Duran Ranch Marketplace, will tell you that when you open your heart to new possibilities and begin to dream, wonderful, joyful things can happen! Five years ago, Duran inherited half of her father’s multi-acre avocado farm on the edge of San Marcos and Vista. The hurdles of making a go in the avocado business in these challenging times were daunting. After three years, she began looking at other ways she could better utilize the beautiful farmland and horse pastures she called home--especially with 300 linear feet of road frontage land off of Buena Creek Road.
Duran will tell you it was a God thing when she met Eric Maldonado and his wife Sarai. The young couple yearned to live in the country to raise their little girl. Duran created a win-win when she offered them the opportunity to live in her garage apartment in exchange for helping her with repair projects and gardening. One day, Eric said, “Wouldn’t it be so cool if we built a little coffee shop down by the road and sold a variety of locally sourced organic foods and specialty items made by local artisans?
It sounded like a perfect next chapter for Duran who, although she graduated from San Marcos High, traveled the world, lived in Paris for a while, and then spent three decades in Georgia. Duran’s professional background is also interesting and diverse. She is not only a retired Special Education teacher, but a talented home renovator that knows the con-
“Sometimes things come into our lives as a gift”
struction business inside and out. She also is an author of three books and has a podcast entitled, www.jointheconversationwithsummerkeith.com.
“Sometimes things come into our lives as a gift,” says Duran. “Eric’s idea and the marketplace we have created brings me so much joy. I have met so many wonderful and talented people because of it. To me, the land is the mother that has birthed this beautiful thing that creates community. People didn’t have a place to sell their goods and now I’ve created a thriving little business for local vendors. My role is investor and silent partner. Everyone else does the rest!”
Duran Ranch Marketplace is located at 644 Buena Creek Road in San Marcos, between South Santa Fe and Twin Oaks Valley Road. Opened in mid-December of 2024, the Marketplace offers organic coffees and pastries along with a variety of unique and specialty food items, such as Bianca’s Handmade Sourdough Bread. There’s a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers as well as from the huge gardens and new organic greenhouse on the Ranch that is managed by Sarai.
Duran also looks for connoisseur level items like Heirloom tomatoes, broccolini, and white asparagus. They go perfectly with Italian pastas, flavored olive oils, and organic coffees that Duran orders from FAIRE, a wholesale company in California that sells fair trade items from around the world. The Marketplace also includes a second building that features organic skincare products, various homeopathic creams and lotions, handbags, and a wide variety of unique pieces made by local artisans.
Visit
“We welcome local vendors that meet our guidelines to partner with and are always looking for new items to feature,” says Duran. “Come for a great cup of coffee, sit under our shady pergola, and enjoy everything that Duran Ranch Marketplace has to offer,” Duran says. “I’m so grateful for the blessings it brings me every day.”

Longer appointments can include extras such as scalp exfoliation, dandruff treatments, red light therapy, and more.
Beyond the indulgence, these treatments are designed to address real scalp and hair concerns, including dermatitis, buildup, hair loss, and damage. Invita’s team has invested significant time and research into finding the right technology and techniques, ensuring you leave with a healthier scalp and a personalized plan for ongoing hair care. From day one, Invita has worked to become a true part of the Vista community by hiring locally, supporting local causes, and engaging in ongoing professional education for their staff. Dan, Invita’s Spa Engineer, credits their warm and talented team for making each guest’s visit so special. He also acknowledges the invaluable support from the City of Vista and the Vista Chamber of Commerce, which helped them bring modern spa technology into their mid-century modern space while preserving its original charm.
Now, Invita is preparing to celebrate their first anniversary in style. With more than 200 regular customers, the popular salon is usually booked out almost a month in advance and always in demand.
“My mother Gladys Salazar gifted me her salon business when I got married in 2020,” says Torres. “I basically grew up there so it was no surprise that I would want to carry on the family business. My two sisters also have salons in Mission Viejo and Oregon. And, if we ever need it, I can always ask a couple of my aunts who used to work for my mom to help us out, too. It’s truly a family affair!”
Torres and her wife and business partner Claudia Tamayo say that it’s their love of dogs that makes their work so rewarding. They have six of their own and often bring two at a time to work with them. “We love learning about new breeds and seeing how happy the dogs are after their spa day,” says Torres.
“We also love the relationships we have with our clients. We see them once every 4-8 weeks and over time, we’ve created some really close bonds with many of them. It’s one of the best parts of our jobs.”
What
Tamayo, who has 10 years of grooming experience, loves a challenge. According to Torres, she can transform a dog with her creative haircutting skills. “Her specialty is Asian Fusion haircuts,” says Torres. “She can do a wide variety of elaborate haircuts with scissoring that really brings the magic.” Torres says one of the most popular looks these days is the Teddy Bear haircut, but Tamayo can accommodate any crazy and creative request like mullets and Mohawks.
“Our goal is to always go above and beyond at our salon and to make each animal feel safe, comfortable and loved while they are here,” says Torres. “We are proud Latinas who have built this space out of love, dedication, and community. We like to treat everyone like family at Viva La Pooch. Our values run deep and shine through our warm hospitality and our deep care for every furry friend,” she says.
Makes Viva La Pooch Special:
1. No breed of dog is ever refused.
2. Nail trims are available for exotic animals like pet rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, and bearded dragons.
3. Special care and attention are given to senior dogs or those with other needs to ensure they always have a positive salon experience.
4. For the safety and health of all pets, up-to-date vaccinations are required for all grooming services.
For example, Torres and Tamayo have a tradition of celebrating Día de los Muertos in the salon with an altar featuring candles, flowers, and photos of beloved pet clients who have passed away. They are active members of the Chamber and participate in the Latino Business Owners mixers to help support other small business owners. Their Strawberry Fest booth this year was also a big hit. “We sold grooming products, provided tips on home care, and even had a mini petcostume contest,” says Torres. “It was a great experience and nice to give back.”
It doesn’t stop there. Viva La Pooch also provides discounted baths and makeovers for dogs in need through their partnership with the non-profit, Spot Saves Pets Rescue.
Viva La Pooch is located in McCarthy Square downtown. Be sure to stop and say hello. You can’t miss their pink poodle in the window and pink and white striped décor! Truly magnifica!

“Any club is only as good as its people… VPR runs on genuine kindness and respect which transforms the people into our culture and it makes good people better,” says Vista Palomar Riders President, Mario Denys.
Vista Palomar Riders (VPR) is a horseback riding club established in 1946 which used to be well known for its annual 5-day ride, or expedition, from Vista to Palomar Mountain. However, the ride became logistically challenging in the early 1990s due to new propertyuse complications along the once rural trail. Since then, VPR has enjoyed their permanent home on Little Gopher Canyon Road on the Vista-Bonsall border. Settling down may not have been ideal at the time, but it has allowed the club to flourish and grow their roots for future generations. VPR welcomes the community to visit and learn about the equestrian lifestyle during their monthly potlucks and various community outreach events.
Today, VPR is led by their current president, Mario Denys, with support from a hard-working and highly motivated board of directors. They all lead with their core intrinsic values of “character, kindness, honesty, work ethic, patriotism, and respect.” Stephen Dunham,
VPR’s Kids for Country event chairman, believes that “when those core values are encouraged within the club and at community events, everyone wins.”
These values are present during normal, non-event days where members can enjoy the 14-acre VPR property with their horses or camp out with fellow members and family. Members trust each other to respect the club’s property and are welcome to use the facilities “as if it was their own personal property.” Additionally, Mario and his board are focused on encouraging more youths to enjoy the club while teaching them proper horse care. They believe it “instills highvalue leadership skills and a special pride in ownership and work ethic.” Mario hopes that his legacy enables his fellow members and youth leaders to recognize that the riding lifestyle is bigger than them. He adds, “it’s about community and members that can extend their kindness and work ethic well beyond the confines of VPR.”
Recently, welcoming the community and outreach has been a priority for the club because they see an opportunity to create a positive impact on people’s lives. For instance, VPR has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Vista for the second year in a row. Their goal is to educate Vista’s youth about horsemanship, the equestrian lifestyle, and the value of hard work. Mario and the VPR members
are always thrilled to teach kids about horses and see their faces light up with wonder and awe discovering this lifestyle in their own backyard. Mario mentions that “a horse’s quality of life fully depends on the responsibility of its owner.. Caring for another being can help them in the future with work or community, and it is a crucial foundation for selflessness.”
Vista Palomar Riders made it their mission to bring out the best in people and create a stronger and kinder community through their culture and community events. On September 13, 2025 VPR is hosting their second annual Kids for Country event (get tickets at kidsforcountry.com!) to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Vista and support
community horsemanship and educational events. Kids for Country is a 21+ concert headlining Brad Johnson that includes a mechanical bull riding competition, a silent auction, and many other attractions to raise funds. On September 26-28, 2025 VPR is also hosting their annual Wagon Wheel event which invites the community to participate in trail rides, live music, and an exciting cattle sorting competition, all while camping out at the club! Vista Palomar Riders welcomes everyone to join the fun and camaraderie of these events. For more information visit VistaPalomarRiders.org and kidsforcountry.com. Their facility is located at 973 Little Gopher Canyon Road, Vista, California 92084.

2025 Year in Review
It is a great feeling to reflect back on the progress we have made last school year cultivating learning environments that champion hope and joy for all students. As a district, our vision remains steadfast - Every student graduates from Vista Unified as a resilient, agile learner and creative problem solver who navigates the world with confidence and kindness and eagerly embraces local and global challenges. In collaboration with the staff across the district, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we share this Year in Review 2025 report to the community. This report highlights authentic examples of the progress we have made to not only realize our vision as a district, but also to create engaging learning environments that appeal to the diverse strengths, interests, and aspirations of our students from transitional kindergarten to seniors in high school. The Vista Unified team is committed to working tirelessly to become compassionate champions of hope and joy for all students. You can read the Year in Review 2025 report to the community by visiting the website: www.vistausd.org or scan this code with your phone.
The success story behind Retread is based on passion, collaboration, and a desire to create real change for others. Retread is a 30-to-120 day, 48-bed shelter designed to assist individuals, couples, and their pets in getting their lives back on track.
It all began in 2023 when Hannah Gailey, the Executive Director at Green Oak Ranch Ministries, a men’s recovery program for drugs and alcohol in Vista, saw that there was a growing interest within our City Council to address the unhoused population in North County. They collaborated with the City of Encinitas to share expenses (a 75/25 percent split) and hire a service provider for a new shelter in Vista. Gailey applied, established a non-profit, and received the grant to officially open Retread in March of 2024.
Today, Retread’s campus is made up of four buildings on county land near the Buena Creek Vista area, which is very close to the Sprinter Station on South Santa Fe and Sycamore. “We are different from other shelters because we have a semi-
congregate design, which means clients share a room with just one roommate,” explains Nanette Steenstra, an administrative statistician for Retread. “We also have a kitchen and living room area on each of our four floors, which makes it feel more comfortable, helping clients adjust to living in a community.”
The campus includes two shelter buildings for clients along with a five-bedroom house where eight staff members reside. Administrative staff share a collaborative workspace. Retread employs approximately 20 people. There are three case managers and typically two to three navigation coaches onsite 24/7 available to provide support. They serve meals and are fully accessible to their clients. These Peer Support Specialists are certified and most have been in these same situations. “We

hire a lot of graduates from Green Oak Ranch who are peer support certified,” says Steenstra. “It’s an amazing part of our program because we provide housing for them, too. Grads give hope to clients and there’s a lot of satisfaction in being able to share their stories with others.”
Clients must be referred through the San Diego Rescue Mission‘s homeless outreach team in Vista to get on the
waiting list. The demand is high and occupancy rates remain steadily above 95 percent.
According to Steenstra, the largest age group of clients are 55 and older. “The program begins with a 30-day stay, during which clients have access to a variety of services. This includes help with paperwork, legal documents, emergency funding, job counseling and more,” she says. “If clients are working
Retread partners with various service providers including VCC to come on-site and provide services to our clients.

hard toward their goals, we have the flexibility to let them stay for up to 120 days.”
In its first 12 months, Retread has had 86 clients fully resolve their homelessness and move into permanent housing. A total of 61 percent of all exits have led to non-homeless situations to include permanent housing, temporary stays with family or friends, skilled nursing facilities, rehab programs and
other supportive institutions. Steenstra explains that there are all kinds of needs, many stemming from illness or disability. “Many people simply didn’t have the support system to catch them when they needed help – no family or friends near when they got stuck in a hard place,” she says. “That’s where we step in to provide the support system and the community they need to get back on their feet.”
