DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

MARCH 2025

GROWTH AND ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES FOR REDMOND

Here we are in March and that means Spring is right around the corner (March 20) and the new year is off to a fast start. In February the Cascade Business News asked the Bend, LaPine and Redmond Chambers to write about what’s happening in our respective communities. In case you missed my article, I thought I would share it with you here – “Growth and Endless Possibilities for Redmond”.

Redmond continues to be a community of growth and endless possibilities. The “can do” spirit and unwavering community support for business and industry continues to make Redmond the place to be. Yes, we have our challenges to face like everyone else, but the constructive attitude and ability to forge partnerships to make things happen, is what keeps Redmond humming along.

Like most communities across the state, affordable housing is an issue and supporting houseless needs have been met with unique and creative partnerships. Oasis Village had a successful opening in 2024 and

provides a bridge to stable housing. Th is unique approach to providing housing is a prime example of what partnerships can accomplish. State and local grants, public private support and a vision to make it happen is what Redmond is all about.

In November of 2024, Redmond residents stepped up and passed a school bond to support the maintenance and substantial improvements to our schools, putting the needs of kids first. The bond aimed to enhance safety, preserve facilities and expand educational opportunities for students. The community stepped up and said yes, once again living by the old adage of a community is known by the schools they keep.

Of course, the Redmond Airport, is a shining example of the growth in Central Oregon and continues to play a key role as an economic development engine for the region. Airline services continue to grow to meet demand and new markets are emerging. The terminal expansion with a nearly

With an estimated cost of over $170 million, this is an investment in the future and will be paid through state and federal support, grants and the Airports ability to issue a bond. The new construction is expected to start this year.

Th is year will be another year of success for Redmond, and I am sure as a community we rise to meet any challenge that comes our way, with positivity and enthusiasm. I can’t think of a better place to call home.

MEMBERSHIP update

Greetings To All Of Our Amazing Members!

Well, here we are…in the 3rd month of 2025 already! Time sure does fly by fast. We have talked a lot about capitalizing on membership recently and as we wrap up the first quarter, let’s take a moment to recap on a few membership highlights from the year so far.

- Online Member Profile & Access

- Membership Directory

- Chamber Member Decal

- Redmond Chamber of Commerce Member Logo

There are so many more ways that our members can benefit from and take advantage of their memberships and we will discuss more of those highlights each month, but these are probably the fastest and easiest ways to gain some additional exposure and credibility in the Redmond community.

Every membership automatically comes with a Member Profile that is displayed on and is accessible through the Redmond Chamber of Commerce’s website. These profiles are what non-members and other members see on our website when your business is clicked on in the Member Directory. For this reason, I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep existing data not only updated with the most current information for your business, but to add content such as bio’s, logos, taglines, pictures, social networking links, etc. to your profile. Not only does this give our audiences more content when they perform a member search, but it also makes your profile more personable and unique with that customized flair. These profiles tend to stand out more and capture the attention of our users more so than not.

This is also a good time to update your office, building or website with Redmond Chamber of Commerce signage. Do you have a Chamber Member Decal displayed in the window or door of your business? If not, come by and pick one up at the office. Did you also know that you can request our member logo and display this on your website or social media pages? Utilizing Chamber signage adds familiarity and credibility to any business and these are free for our members to use. If anyone would like our member logo, feel free to email me at membership@ visitredmondoregon.com and I will be happy to get that sent over.

There you have it, a few very simple ways that your business can gain exposure and credibility with very minimal effort. You don’t have to attend events to benefit from a Chamber Membership and this year, we will be spending more time talking about what membership brings to the table with or without event attendance. Don’t forget that we are here to support your business in any way that we can and would love to hear from you as to how we can do better and on what we have been doing well. As always, it is an absolute pleasure to be working with such an amazing community!

NEWS FROM Crooked River Ranch Road Department

the ranch

One of the most interesting facts of Crooked River Ranch is it has its own ‘Road Department’. This article will enlighten those on the ranch and surrounding areas as to how this independent department can maintain the established roads. There are 90 miles of roads in Crooked River Ranch, 12 miles of that are County roads, 78 miles are CRR Association roads, with 26 miles of those being paved and maintained by the Special Road District and 52 miles of road that are rock or native and maintained by the CRR Road Department.

The Road Department Supervisor is Jordan Jones, who has held this position since July of 2018. His immediate Supervisor is Crooked River Ranch Manager Judy LaPora. Supervisor Jones also updates the Board of Directors throughout the year to discuss road maintenance progress and any issues that come up. He also presents his annual budget to both the Budget/Audit Committee and Board to discuss the upcoming budget for the following year. Supervisor Jones is also responsible for working in coordination with the Special Road District [SRD] which has jurisdiction over the public roads within Crooked River Ranch except for county roads. The Association is delegated with the authority to perform road maintenance on SRD managed roads. The Crooked River Ranch Road Department does not do any paving or have any paving equipment as non-county paved roads are maintained and funded

solely through the Special Roads District who then contracts out those projects.

The department includes three full time [class A CDL] positions including Supervisor Jones and one full time [non CDL] employee who operates the roller/compactor and street sweeper, fuels equipment and performs various other duties. Salaries and benefits correspond to comparable Central Oregon positions. Currently there are no open positions, however when those open, they are posted and advertised.

The equipment inventory consists of 4 dump trucks, 3 of which are set up for plows and sanders during the winter months, leaving the department a spare to do various projects or use as a backup in case there is a breakdown. During the summer 3 of the trucks are used for hauling gravel and one to move equipment along with limbs and debris. There are 2 road graders for gravel roads, one compaction roller, two water trucks, one backhoe, one mini excavator with a rock hammer attachment, one street sweeper, one shoulder side spreader and a crack seal machine. After years of maintaining a stable budget, planning, and saving the department has most of the equipment needed to properly maintain the ranch roads. Surprisingly, the Road Department does all their own lube, oil, and filter changes. They are also able to do much of the repair work themselves, when unable to complete this, they hire qualified mechanics. One of the

‘other duties as assigned’ is way off the chart of road maintenance is the responsibility of stopping what they are doing to pick up and dispose of the dead deer reported on the roads.

As for projects specialized for the seasons, Spring, Summer, and Fall are mainly focused on maintaining roads including watering, grading, and rolling gravel roads. On a good day, the department can grade and roll about 1.5 miles of road per day. This alone takes about 2.5-3 months. Winter months complete focus is centered around safety. The Association is responsible for plowing and sanding roads. Bus stops, intersections and primary roads will be plowed first after which secondary roads will be plowed. Gravel roads will not be plowed unless there are 4+ inches of snow and the ground is frozen enough so as not to cause damage to the roads or equipment. Supervisor Jones has the discretion to close roads if he deems them unsafe, which usually happens due to a vehicle accident or unsafe conditions that can’t be controlled. He makes every effort to keep roads open.

The Road Department costs are nearly one-half of the annual HOA Operating Budget. In addition to budgeting for the yearly operating revenues and expenses, the Road Department must also budget for replacement equipment. The 30year Capital Reserve Budget provides a long-range plan for upgrading or replacement of all major assets.

One of the biggest questions the

Road Department gets is when are you going to pave my road? There are no plans to pave any additional roads on Crooked River Ranch. At current rates, one mile of road would cost a million dollars plus. With as many gravel and native roads as we have on the Ranch, there are often complaints about dusty, muddy or washboard roads. Unfortunately, the weather dictates much of the condition of our roads. Regarding washboard roads, the most effective way to get rid of it is to grade the road. Grading will loosen up the gravel or dirt that has become compacted and spread it around evenly, leaving you with a smooth, even road and a comfortable ride. The Road Department makes every effort to grade all Ranch roads at least once each year. But it is a lost cause if our community does not do its part to prevent wash-boarding. Studies have shown that if traffic stays under 20 mph washboards will form very slowly. So, the key to prevent washboard (for the most part) is to stay under 20 mph. On top of reducing the creation of wash boards, going slower will also significantly reduce dust. While the Road Department does have to deal with complaints, our community is also grateful for their hard work and dedication to keeping our roads maintained and safe.

If you come to visit us, please drive safely. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and views. They are some of the best in Central Oregon.

BUSINESS WITH THE LIBRARY

The Power of Networking

Liisa Sjoblom is a Community Librarian with the Deschutes Public Library. If you have a business research need or help finding grants for your nonprofit, contact her at liisas@deschuteslibrary.org or 541-617-7093.

Business networking is a proven strategy for building connections and fostering relationships both locally and beyond. Whether within your industry at conferences and workshops or through broader events like those hosted by your local Chamber of Commerce, networking offers countless opportunities to engage with others.

So, why is networking so important? While the short answer is to build connections and relationships, the benefits extend far beyond that. Networking allows you to learn from others, gain fresh perspectives from different industries, and refine your pitch and messaging. It can also open doors to valuable business referrals and partnerships, ultimately contributing to your business growth.

However, effective networking goes beyond simply collecting business cards and email addresses. It's about being intentional in your interactions. Focus on the person you're speaking with—ask thoughtful questions to understand what they do and what matters most to them. After the event, consider jotting down a few notes and following up when appropriate to continue the conversation.
