2 Memories of Jewish History One category of monuments in Kosice carries a significantly strong story itself. Before holocaust, Kosice was a city with one of the largest and most prominent jewish communities in the area of today’s Slovakia. In 1944, it took less then a month to transport almost the whole community to the concentration camps. The synagogues, schools and places to worship have remained, and they now create an inseparable part of the city’s atmosphere and their visitation will provide those willing to explore the city more on the city walk „The Jewish Košice“ with an unforgettable experience. 3 True people, true city, true story Kosice is a city which does not have to pretend to be something. It has gone through centuries of breath taking history, stories and legends, as well as the times, when the face of the city was rapidly changing with its growing settlements as a manifestation of socialistic realism. 8 A gate to the East of Slovakia Kosice is an ideal source place for making trips to its close surroundings, we can organize for delegates or accompaying persons. 10 Kosice Gold Treasure The treasure consists of eleven and a half kilograms of more than 2000 gold coins and a gold chain, which were found during the reconstruction of the former residence of the Spis Business Association, a financial institute operating in Spis area in 1935! The treasure is traveling around the world these days and will return to Kosice in 2013.

7 A gate to Tokaj – do you feel like medicine? Kosice was surrounded by vineyards in the past. The city laid on the famous wine roads and as a gift from the Ugrian king it was given a part of the vineyards in Tokaj area. Nowadays, Kosice is the gate to Tokaj area, to a unique wine area, where for centuries the golden wine has been produced seizing the likes of many popes, rulers or aristocrats, such as the King Ludovit IX- also known as The Sun King. The Botanical Garden of Pavol J. Šafárik University in Košice (hereinafter referred to as BG PJŠU) is located in the northwestern part of the Košice Basin at the base of the slopes of the east foothill of the Slovak Ore Mountains of the site Bankov and its local part, the Red Bluff. BG PJŠU was founded in 1950. The original vegetation in the BG PJŠU area consisted of oak-hornbeam forests of the class Querco – Fagetea. BG PJŠU is a research and educational unit with all-university operation. BG PJŠU covers pedagogical and educational activity, scientific and research activity and cultural and social activity, too. Before building the town hall in its current place, there were probably two standing Gothic bourgeois houses. The Town Hall was built according to plans by an architect from Bratislava named J. Langer during 1779–1780. The capital repair was carried out in the 80s of the 19th century. This changed its style in the southern part of the building and extended the court wings. This part has currently obtained corresponding paint decorations. The building underwent several repairs in the 19th century, especially on the surface of the walls. The paintings on the surface of the walls were also renovated and restored. In 1995, when the building has already served the last 50 years as a library, city council decided that the historic Town Hall would serve its purpose once again. In the years 1997–1999, this historic building has undergone complete reconstruction. Historic Town Hall building is owned by the City of Kosice and in the competence of the Administration of the Property of Kosice, s. r. o. After the reconstruction in 1997, it is used for representative purposes by the mayor of Kosice.

As early as in1657, the Universitas Cassoviensis was established in Košice, but technical education in Slovakia was only elevated to higher level in 1762, when the Austro-Hungarian monarch Maria Theresa established the Mining Academy in BanskáŠtiavnica. This academy provided education and promoted research activity in a group of scientific disciplines ranging from ore mining through to production and processing of metal materials.

from Budapest and in the year 1925 won the international competition to build neologic synagogue in Kosice in the end of Moyzesova Street. The shape of the House of Arts recalls the legendary Roman Pantheon. In the former synagogue hall, the acoustics is so great that the Philharmonic Orchestra plays there even without an audience, for example when recording CDs. In this hall, the last modification was made in 1977, when the most modern concert organ in Czechoslovakia of those times was installed there. And therefore, not only the Kosice Music Spring but also annual International Organ Festival (in autumn) are held there. The hall is suitable for 1100 people.

Social evening in the historic trams in the historic heart of the town accompanied by contemporary music will provide your participants with an unforgettable experience about which they will speak for a long time. The rich artistic and historical background of the region of eastern Slovakia in the last century (with headquarters in Levoca, Presov and Kosice) and developed artistic life in the 20th century – especially in Kosice and Presov, created the need of specialized institution in eastern Slovakia which would survey the fine art not only of the last two centuries. The Eastern Slovak Gallery was founded in 1951, immediately after the Slovak National Gallery foundation. Today it provides a unique place in the historical center for holding social events and conferences with the capacity of up to 150 persons, modern technical equipment and catering.

House of Arts The ZOO in Košice is the largest ZOO in Slovakia and the third largest in Europe, though visitors are allowed only in about one third of this area. Slovak Technical Museum (STM) is a specialized museum, providing an overview of the development of science and technology. STM is a national institution, the only technical museum in Slovakia falling within the scope of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. In the historic building in the town center, so-called Captain’s Palace, the representative lecture hall serving the purposes of holding conferences is available. It is suitable for various representative events or lectures and seminars on selected topics for professionals or broad public. The Jewish Košice Since 1840, Košice had become home to one of the largest and most prominent Jewish communities in Slovakia. Their rich communal life was destroyed in 1944, when almost all Jewish citizens of Kosice were deported to Auschwitz. Today, the Jewish community has only about 280 members. The city has numerous Jewish heritage sites, including a large Jewish cemetery, which is still in use. Four out of the five major synagogues that operated here before the War also still stand. By their beauty, atmosphere and uniqueness, the Jewish monuments make this tour a truly unique experience.
