The General Optical Council’s inaugural Business Registrant Survey Report 2024 made interesting reading when it was released last month.
While only seven per cent of the target population – i.e. 214 business registrants – responded to the survey, 59 per cent of these were independent practices. Among the stand-out findings were that only half of independent practices who responded to the survey expected to experience growth in the next 12 months compared to 61 per cent of multiples.
Independents were also less likely to use certain technologies, such as interactive websites, virtual assistants and autorefractors, and more than twice as likely as multiples to have had more than 70 per cent of their sight tests funded by the NHS. Recruitment was also a bug-bear with 67 per cent of total respondents saying they had faced difficulties recruiting staff, and 76 per cent having used locums at least occasionally over the past year.
Independents were also less likely than multiples to offer student placements, despite the benefits outlined by Sam Phillips in last month’s issue – including the chance to champion the independent sector. If you have some time, it might be worth pouring over the full report to find causal links and gain some valuable insights for your own business operations moving forwards.
Talking of practice business pointers, in this month’s Developing Thoughts, Phil Mullins highlights two presentations to look forward to at this autumn’s NEG Building for Success conference (don’t forget to book your place). We have a range of product profiles from NEG’s preferred suppliers – plus a look at some of the latest design innovations in the sports eyewear category prepped and primed for the summer ahead.

Rodenstock
Rodenstock has introduced the latest iteration of its ColorMatic photochromic lens –describing new ColorMatic X as its fastest and clearest performing photochromic yet. In designing the lens, the company took its latest dye generation and embedded it in a durable optical high-index matrix. Enhanced optical properties and UV protection are generated by the use of ColorMatic Compound Technology, which separates the function of phototropism from the optical and mechanical properties of the lens.
Full UV protection is ensured by the superior base lens, says the company. The lens can thus change from the darkened state to the colourless state at an accelerated rate – 54 per cent faster than the previous generation of ColorMatic. When indoors, the lenses reach a market-leading clarity of up to 95 per cent. The lenses will then darken by up to 88 per cent outdoors, providing the wearer with comfortable vision and protection in changing light conditions and bright sunlight.

Alan Pitcher, commercial director for wholesale lenses at EssilorLuxottica, said: “Our growing selection of frames now offers even more choice at the click of a
button, and is an efficient alternative to in-house glazing and remote edge services.” Practitioners using the glazing service can utilise a frame-to-follow option

CooperVision has agreed to be a platinum sponsor of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) for the next 12 months – supporting its activities and benefitting from exposure across BCLA events and platforms. Since the first David Beckham collection launched in 2020, the brand has amassed a global following. Continued strong sales growth (eight per cent) of its BIG Vision product portfolio of biometric progressive lenses, and the successful launch of MyCon lenses for children, has driven increased consolidated pro-forma net sales to €506.1m (previous year €505.3m on a pro forma basis) for the Rodenstock Group for the year 2023. The group reported a challenging macro environment for the fiscal year overall considering ongoing geopolitical risks with tensions in the Middle East as well as continued inflation, adding to economic volatility. Despite this, a recurring EBITDA of €122.3m was generated in 2023, up 0.3 per cent compared to the previous year on a pro forma basis.

responded to the survey; 73 per cent said they had introduced a new or improved clinical service to patients over the last three years; 99 per cent said that improving customer experience was a reason behind their decision to innovate; while, 92 per cent cited patient demand for new services as a reason. Businesses that had innovated found the greatest benefits to be attracting new patients (68 per cent) and having increased revenue from existing patients (52 per cent). A quarter of respondents planned to use artificial intelligence and LiveChat/virtual assistants in the next two years.
Looking at business performance, 51 per

Sixtyseven per cent said they had experienced difficulties recruiting staff, with 76 per cent having used locums at least occasionally over the past year. Only 40 per cent agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: ‘I am optimistic about the future of primary eyecare’, and most agreed they expected difficult times ahead for the industry. The GOC plans to use the results to assess how regulation may need to adapt to support businesses meet the needs of patients, and contribute towards its review of business regulation.

Net Zero Eyecare
Net Zero Eyecare (NZE) – the not-forprofit verification company established by Practice Building to deliver its Net Zero Optics programme – has released new certification standards to guide and support practices, service providers, distributors and manufacturing suppliers along their journey to net zero emissions. The new standards offer recognised status as having met certain key carbon objectives, starting with a net zero commitment, working through to comprehensive carbon accounting to achieve full net zero carbon emissions.
NZE founder, Andrew Clark, said: “Our certification standards present the highest global standards in carbon accounting in a way that is clear and accessible for the optical industry, but these new standards make it easier than ever for companies to take meaningful action on the climate crisis, as they so clearly break down the journey to net zero into simple, achievable steps.” NZE, amongst other climate-focused organisations, is calling for companies to set net zero targets no later than 2045. British Contact Lens Association
Tackling the “hidden pandemic” of presbyopia presents a “monumental opportunity” for the contact lens industry – according to authors of a newly published British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) global consensus report. The BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia papers deliver evidence-based guidance to eyecare professionals on all aspects of presbyopia and its management. The first four of the seven papers are now available to download from Contact Lens & Anterior Eye
Research featured in the papers was presented during the BCLA Focus lecture track at Optometry Tomorrow 24 (see page 23). Discussing his paper looking at the epidemiology of presbyopia, Neil Retallic stressed the need for a standard definition for the condition. He said: “The global cost of correcting presbyopia is estimated to be $30.8bn, while research shows that 410 million people feel ‘disabled’ by not having access to visual correction of their presbyopia. It’s something we have to talk about more and reduce the burden. It is a pandemic that is hidden in plain sight.” Learn more about BCLA CLEAR at www.bcla.org.uk

Association of British Dispensing Opticians
Kevin Gutsell, who runs NEG preferred supplier CentroStyle Optical Centre Supplies, became the new president of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) during a handover ceremony last month at the Association’s National Resource Centre in Birmingham. With a career in optics spanning four decades, Kevin qualified as a dispensing optician in 1987 and has served as an ABDO board member for most of the past 14 years.
He initially worked in practice before joining Alcon as an area account manager in 1996. Two years later, he joined Nikon Optical UK and worked in roles in sales, marketing and professional services until 2013. He now runs Optical Centre Supplies, supplying CentroStyle products in the UK. Kevin has served as a distance learning tutor for ABDO College since 1992, is the ABDO representative on the Spectacle Lens Committee at the British Standards Institute, and has been a member of education visitor panels of the General Optical Council since 2016. He is also editor of ABDO’s Ophthalmic Lens Availability Online.
At the ceremony, Kevin thanked outgoing president, Daryl Newsome, for his dedication and hard work during the two years that he held the post, before handing over the vice presidency to Brenda Rennie. He said: “I very much look forward to working with the new vice president, Brenda Rennie, and forging the style of leadership and teamwork which the immediate past president has afforded me during the last two years.”

AN INDEPENDENT VIEW
Time to educate the public
If you go into your local pub and ask the regulars if they know what the difference is between an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, a dispensing optician or an optical assistant, you will generally get a blank stare.
The terms they will use in casual conversations about their eyes are ‘optician’ and ‘eye surgeon’, and even then they will probably go to their doctor with any eye ailment.
It is difficult to think of any other branch of healthcare provision where such public ignorance of clinical titles exists. People know what dentists, pharmacists, chiropodists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, even hypnotherapists and acupuncturists are, and what they do.
When optometry became a regulated profession under the General Optical Council (GOC) on 7 July 1958, there followed a public awareness campaign, which even included advertisements on the back of London buses. Yet here we, are more than 65 years later, and recognition of optometrists and dispensing opticians is probably as low as it has ever been. Of course, some may lay part of the blame for this on the multiples, but that is probably neither fair nor correct. Further, trying to set out blame is a redundant exercise unless it can inform a solution, and it probably can’t in this instance.
Some may ask: why does this matter anyway? Well, at a time when the common agenda is about embedding primary eye health care in community optometry, it may help if people know what optometry is and what optometrists are qualified to do. This goes for all important stakeholders such as parliamentarians, doctors and nurses as well as the general public.
Perhaps it’s time for the GOC – and all the professional and trade bodies – to come together and make this a priority agenda item at the next meeting of the Optical Sector Policy Forum. If all the resources of the various organisations were combined in common cause to build awareness and educate the public about the vital professions of optometry and dispensing optics, surely this would have an impact.
exactly that. This new course is the latest addition to the suite of learning resources available to our members, following on from the success of other certificates in myopia management and dry eye disease which have been completed by hundreds of eyecare professionals.
“The certificate is aimed at any optometrist or contact lens optician who wishes to make sure that they are up-to-date with the current evidence base in contact lenses and anterior eye; helping to ensure that you are giving the best service you can to your contact lens patients,” added Luke. The course is free for all full members of the BCLA, including access to all course materials and additional resources.” Visit www.bcla.org.uk

Sessions in the spotlight Developing thoughts
By Phil Mullins
The venue's booked, the programme finalised and the exhibition sold out – so all that's left to do is book your place at this year's NEG Business for Success Conference...
Taking place on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 October at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham, the event will cover everything you need to make a continued success of your business – with topics traversing everything from artificial intelligence and consulting room technology to team building and contact lenses.
Over the next few issues, we will be shining the spotlight on a range of presentations that delegates can look forward to over the course of both days. This month's focus is on the presenters and conference sessions that promise to help drive your personal and professional development as well as that of your practice team.
EMPLOYMENT LAW LATEST
The opening session of the conference will be presented by Emma McGrath, professional support solicitor at Citation. As business owners ourselves, we believe this will probably be one of the most important sessions you attend this year – because keeping up with the very latest changes in employment law is becoming ever more important and challenging.
Emma originally qualified as a solicitor working in private practice. In 2007, she joined the employment law team at Citation – first as an adviser and then as a manager. In 2019, she moved to work as a professional support solicitor in Citation's professional support team. Her role includes delivering training and seminars as well as researching and guiding on difficult employment law points, always looking for practical approaches that work for the particular client.
During her presentation, titled 'Employment law update: what’s new in 2024/2025?', Emma will look at 2024 and the current unprecedented employment law changes. These includes updates to holiday pay, paternity, redundancy and flexible
Emma McGrath
working legislation – and the introduction of new rights such as Carer’s Leave. Further changes are expected in October and into 2025 including amendments to the Equality Act, a new right to request a stable working pattern and neonatal leave. Emma will share insights into new and forthcoming changes, so that your business can be forewarned and forearmed.
PLAYING AS A TEAM
A familiar name and face to NEG members, Andy Clark leads the Practice Building team – who in turn run the NEG Business Club. In his presentation, Andy will discuss 'How to build a premiership team'. Andy’s presentations are always engaging and thought-provoking and we are in no doubt that his talk will generate real discussions at the conference.
Although you may have heard Andy present at our conferences in the past, you might not know that, as well as being an optometrist and founder of Practice Building, he spent 12 years as a tutor on the Football Manager’s Association Diploma in Football Management. During this time, he discovered that the founding principles that build great teams are the same regardless of what the team is doing – whether they are playing sport or caring for patients.
During Andy's session, you will discover what practice owners need to do in order to build happy, high-performing teams, and he promises he won’t mention sport even once... Andy’s session is the last session
before lunch on Monday 28 October, so you will have plenty of time to discuss your thoughts with him and other delegates.
COURAGE UNDER FIRE
The last session of the conference is left for individual growth, with our keynote speaker Sarah Furness. After graduating from Cambridge University, Sarah fearlessly pursued her dream of becoming a combat helicopter pilot in the RAF.
As a distinguished Squadron Leader, she took charge of critical operational combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, where she made two profound revelations: that resilience and peak performance under pressure are not innate, yet humans possess an extraordinary capacity to thrive and excel under challenging circumstances when equipped with the right knowledge.
Now, Sarah is passionately devoted to unlocking the secrets of outstanding resilience, performance and courage 'under fire' – determined to empower others with this invaluable wisdom and to help us all 'fly higher'.
As you can see from this small snapshot of what's on offer at this year’s conference, we have assembled a varied programme that will stimulate your thoughts and give you additional skills to take back to your own business to help you build even greater success.

Carolina Herrera Unafraid to be noticed
Safilo presents the spring/summer 2024 Carolina Hererra eyewear collection – created for confident and empowered women...
Reflecting the essence of the brand, the four distinct stories to the collection – House of Herrera, Diva, Bow and Essentials – embody a feminine and joyful aesthetic.
Classy House of Herrera styles are decorated on the temples utilising a fresh interpretation of colour-blocking, with acetate inserts in solid, opaline and Havana options.
The glamourous Diva sunglasses, inspired by a floral mood, fascinate with their vintage-inspired shape, exquisitely crafted and elevated by sparkling flowers studded with crystals.
The Bow sunglasses and optical frames, delicate and sophisticated at the same time, are decorated by a refined bow with a sparkling crystal, celebrating this subtle detail of some Carolina Herrera's dresses and accessories.
The Essential Collection introduces new easy-to-wear sunglasses and ophthalmic frames, such as the feminine styles in
bi-layer acetate, crafted with a skilful milling technique revealing unexpected colour combinations, and elegant models in acetate with signature stripes in enamel on the multifaceted metal temples.
Other proposals are embellished on the temples by a new 'checkerboard' bi-colour decoration, while the new shapes in ultra-light hard acetate are emphasised by subtle contrasts of Havana tones and solid or translucent hues. The new sunglasses and ophthlamic frames, customised by a metal tag with the iconic red monogram logo on rounded endtips, are offered in a distinctive and elegant colour palette.

Shining a light on effective myopia management
MiYOSMART sun spectacle lenses provide a smart way to manage myopia, whilst protecting children’s eyes from the harmful effects of bright and intense sunlight. Time outdoors is great for children’s general health and wellbeing, and it’s seemingly great for myopia too, with research showing that spending at least two hours a day outside may reduce the risk of myopia onset and its progression1,2
It’s a simple message, and one that many eyecare professionals have already taken on board. But there is an additional challenge that cannot be ignored, and that’s sun protection.
TWO EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS
Last year, Hoya Vision Care launched its MiYOSMART sun range – two groundbreaking spectacle lenses that combine the proven myopia management effect of DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology with protection from bright and intense sunlight3-7
MiYOSMART Chameleon (photochromic) is an all-in-one solution that rapidly adapts to the level of sunlight and fades back to clear indoors in seconds (see Box 1)
Meanwhile, the polarised MiYOSMART Sunbird is the ideal addition to MiYOSMART clear spectacle lenses, for extra protection from intense sunlight and glare. It also enables vibrant colours and rich contrast in bright light, allowing children to fully experience the great outdoors3 (see Box 2)
These two products, along with the MiYOSMART clear spectacle lenses launched in the UK in 2021, give children the freedom to take part in the activities they enjoy indoors and outdoors more comfortably, and without compromising their eyesight.
“Children’s vision should be protected. By acting today, we give them more opportunity tomorrow,” says Frederiek Ysebaert, managing director of the Paediatric Care Business Unit at Hoya Vision Care.
“With MiYOSMART sun spectacle lenses, inspired by our discussions with eyecare professionals, we can enable children across the world to spend more time outdoors, while protecting their eyes from bright and intense sunlight, maximising the benefits of DIMS technology on myopia progression,”
Alongside the launch of its MiYOSMART sun range, Hoya Vision Care announced ‘Protect how they see the world’ – a dedicated global campaign to raise awareness of the importance of outdoor time and sun protection in children. Spending time outdoors may slow down myopia progression in children, and as such it is the most common recommended behavioural management for myopia given by eyecare professionals8. However, as the majority of lifetime sun exposure occurs under the age of 21, it is necessary to prevent long-term damage to children’s eyes with effective and reliable sun protection. This is particularly important for myopic children who are light-sensitive.
CONFIDENCE THROUGH EVIDENCE
MiYOSMART sun spectacle lenses are the latest myopia management innovation developed by Hoya, with both photochromic and polarised options applying the same widely accepted DIMS technology as MiYOSMART clear.
With an increasingly wide selection of myopia management products and technologies now available to eyecare professionals, Hoya has made considerable efforts to place robust evidence at the heart of its myopia strategy.
MiYOSMART’s efficacy is backed by a sixyear follow-up clinical study – the longest of any myopia management spectacle lens – which shows their myopia control effect is sustained over time, with no rebound effect
MIYOSMART CHAMELEON: FEATURES AND BENEFITS

if lens use is stopped9. An additional UK study presented its one-year findings last year and demonstrated similar effectiveness in Caucasian versus Asian children, whilst more than 25 scientific publications to date have reported on MiYOSMART DIMS technology10
EARLY EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
Continuing the theme of evidence and research, Hoya last year embarked on an Early Experience Programme (EEP), focusing on its MiYOSMART Chameleon (photochromic) spectacle lenses11
The goal of the EEP was to evaluate the acceptance of MiYOSMART Chameleon spectacle lenses, as well as to gain insights into the wearers’ habits. Hoya proactively collected and analysed data from 100 patients, aged three to 20 years old, located across Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The results of the EEP showed that the MiYOSMART Chameleon spectacle lenses allowed rapid adaptation, with almost 80 per cent (n=65) of patients adapting within one day to their new lenses.
Of note, teenagers adapted to the new lenses as quickly as younger children. Additionally, 100 per cent (n=65) of Chameleon spectacle lens wearers, both new wearers and experienced wearers, were satisfied with their visual performance during both outdoor and indoor activities and were comfortable with the fade back to clear, regardless of geographic location.
As part of the study, Hoya collected data on the effect of MiYOSMART Chameleon on wearing time, which showed a tendency to meet the recommended minimum of 12 hours per day, without the need to switch lenses when spending time outdoors. This wearing time translates to a more effective treatment duration which, in turn, has the potential of maximising the effectiveness of myopia management in children.
“The results of our Early Experience Programme, showing great adaptation, tolerability, and overall satisfaction in patients of different ages and ethnicities is testament to Hoya’s research and commitment
MIYOSMART SUNBIRD: FEATURES AND BENEFITS
MiYOSMART Sunbird is a polarised spectacle lens, which manages myopia whilst allowing children to enjoy vibrant colours and contrast in bright light.
Benefits of polarised spectacle lenses:
■ Greater comfort from glare and intense sunlight
■ Decreased symptoms of light sensitivity (photophobia)
■ Improved contrast sensitivity
■ Rich and vibrant colours
Features of MiYOSMART Sunbird:
■ Dark (Category 3) tinting (85 per cent Abs)
■ Stylish and subtle grey colour
unique design provides clear vision and manages myopia simultaneously
to providing innovative solutions,” says Marianne Goldwaser, professional affairs manager at Hoya Vision Care. “The findings around photophobia and increased wearing time highlight the potential of MiYOSMART Chameleon lenses to improve the outcomes of myopia management in children, while being comfortable and retaining good visual performance.”
A VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY
To date, more than two million parents worldwide have trusted MiYOSMART spectacle lenses to manage their child’s myopia12. As summer approaches, MiYOSMART sun photochromic and polarised lenses provide a safe and effective solution that represents a valuable addition to any eyecare professional’s myopia management strategy, whatever the weather.
MiYOSMART and MiYOSMART sun spectacle lenses are available to accredited eyecare professionals via your local Hoya representative. Find out about becoming accredited by visiting tinyurl.com/msaccredit or call 0844 783 1110 for more information.

Teamwork Focus Freedom With the ever-changing reality of business today, our conference will share with members the abilities they need to develop their businesses, succeed in a constantly evolving world and help promote a strong independent sector in the UK. Collaboration Connections Strategy Planning Sponsored by Sponsored by Supporting your independence since 1979 Register now to attend at www.negconference.co.uk BUILDING FOR SUCCESS CONFERENCE 2024 Sunday 27th & Monday 28th October 2024 The East Midland Conference Centre, Nottingham
Two-for-one in Telford
In their first-ever joint event, the College of Optometrists and British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) welcomed some 900 delegates to Optometry Tomorrow 24 incorporating BCLA Focus...
Held at the Telford International Centre, this was the 20th year of the College’s flagship event, and the first time that it had been held collaboratively. With sessions covering the latest advances in the profession, research-focused poster presentations, and innovative and informative lectures and seminars, the agenda provided something to engage practitioners from all fields and at every stage of their career. The two organisations' programmes ran concurrently, enabling delegates to attend a wide range of lectures.
Addressing delegates in his opening speech, College CEO, Ian Humphreys, remarked: “The College of Optometrists and the British Contact Lens Association share a common goal: to advance the field of eyecare and enhance the quality of life for patients through innovation, education and collaboration. Through this joint event, we are uniting our expertise, knowledge, and resources to achieve this shared vision.” BCLA CEO, Luke StevensBurt, echoed this sentiment, adding: “The combining of both events allows for the exchange of knowledge and expertise between both fields.”
LEARNING AND UP-SKILLING
Artificial intelligence (AI) was the subject of the 20th anniversary keynote lecture delivered by Pearse Keane, Professor of Artificial Medical Intelligence at the Institute of Ophthalmology. In 'Transforming eyecare with artificial intelligence', Professor Keane explained how the widespread adoption of AI would help ophthalmologists spend more time treating people with complex eye diseases, and how it could be harnessed as "a force for good" in both optometry and ophthalmology.
Myopia was the focus of the Charter Lecture, in collaboration with the BCLA. It was delivered by Professor Kathryn Saunders, who leads the Northern Ireland Childhood Errors of Refraction Study, the largest prospective study of eyes and vision in childhood in the UK and Ireland. Titled 'Myopia management: current evidence and future directions', her lecture presented a
future landscape of myopia and the vital role of optometrists in its management.
Attendees also benefitted from numerous face-to-face learning and networking opportunities, interactive sessions, workshops and industry-led talks. With 27 practical workshops to choose from, 56 small group sessions, 12 peer review sessions and 10 business and communications skills sessions, delegates had ample opportunity to develop their clinical techniques.
Delegates from both professional bodies were able to attend 110 CPD sessions over the two days, making it possible to gain all their required CPD points in this final year of the current cycle, and to gain contact lens optician and therapeutics specialty points.
NOT ALL HARD WORK
As well as the academic programme, Optomfest took place on the Sunday evening, offering visitors the opportunity to unwind and socialise with friends and colleagues at a social celebration of 20 years of Optometry Tomorrow.
The conference also featured a trade exhibition with 34 exhibitors and sponsors. Christina Olner, head of professional
affairs at CooperVision, said; “CooperVision was delighted to be platinum sponsor of OT24 – now incorporating BCLA Focus. As leaders in contact lenses and myopia management, CooperVision welcomes the opportunity to engage with professional colleagues from diverse practice backgrounds and is thrilled to deliver education to them at this prestigious event.”
Deborah Bott, Ahalya Subramanian, David Edgar, Pouya Alaghband, John Lawrenson and Peter Campbell were the winners of the 2024 Best Early Career Poster for their poster, ‘Barriers and enablers to managing glaucoma medication adherence: an interview study with UK specialist eyecare professionals’.
Jane M. Fulton, Tsz Wing Leung, Sara J. McCullough, Lesley Doyle, Nicola S. Logan, Carly S.Y. Lam and Kathryn Y. Saunders won the 2024 Best Poster Overall for ‘The PreMO (Predicting Myopia Onset and Progression) risk indicator reliably predicts future myopia in both UK and Hong Kong children'.
The event also featured the College of Optometrists 2024 AGM, which saw Dr Gillian Rudduck inaugurated as College president, taking over the role from Professor Leon Davis. ■

Summer of sports
By Joan Grady
For more than a century, sport has been intriguingly inter-twined with the worlds of fashion and accessories. This fascinating evolution was elegantly researched and strikingly presented at a recent exhibition – Mode et Sport (Fashion and Sport) – held at Le Musée des Arts et Décoratifs in Paris. With paintings, photos, film and an exuberant collection of sports attire and accessories spanning more than a century, the exhibit reflected the importance, appeal and influence of sports apparel from its early debut to how we dress today.
Sports attire in the Victorian era was very restricted, particularly for women, with foundation garments and bustles that hindered movement. Swimming costumes were truly complex: in a corset-bound ensemble freeform swimming strokes were impossible. Then in the 1920s, rigid attitudes towards clothing, accessories and social customs began to dissolve.
Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel paved the way for a more modern approach with the launch of relaxed, easy-going, body-freeing designs that were embraced immediately. Casual clothing in soft fabrics illustrated freedom of movement and grace, and a new wave of sporty flair was evident. More dramatic changes came after World War II with diverse materials and
technologies, plus the introduction of polaroid lenses for spectacles and exotic frame shapes. The futuristic goggle by André Courrèges for the 1972 Winter Olympics cemented evolving eyewear and style direction. Fast forward to 2024, and our enthusiasm for sports generates riveting interest across a broad spectrum of genres, especially with the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

SPORTING ICONS
Sport icons and eyewear brands are collaborating with frame design that endorses active lifestyles. Tennis legend Roger Federer knows about highperformance – on court and off – and is evident in the elegant collection of RF x Oliver Peoples. Federer’s artistry on both grass and hard courts has inspired worldwide interest in tennis.
The same mastery that Federer displays on the tennis court is exhibited in the stunning new collection of ophthalmic and sunglass designs available at EssilorLuxottica. Amongst the highlights in the collection is R1 in lightweight bio-nylon in umber combined with sleek desert flash mirror lenses. Superior standards are essential for Federer, and his partnership with Oliver Peoples exemplifies in stunning designs the value of these principles.
On and off the football field, David Beckham is inspirational with his accomplishments in sport, business and charity. Recognised as one of the best midfielders of his generation, he was also hailed for his freeform kicks. David Beckham Eyewear merges his strong characteristics with contemporary, sleek and versatile frames that are a pleasure to wear.
Distributed by Safilo, model DB1140S is crafted in lightweight acetate and is suitable for prescription lenses as well. The DB Eyewear selection includes superb optical and sun designs turbocharged with a variety of lenses and a stunning colour palette.
Nearly 100 years ago, a Parisian born tennis player, René Lacoste, began to capture prestigious tournaments in France, at Wimbledon and in the US. Lacoste also possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and created the Lacoste sports brand. A century later, Lacoste produces sports apparel as well as timeless eyewear.
Promising French tennis player Arthur Fils, who won his first ATP title at 19 years of age, is the brand ambassador for the Line Collection by Lacoste, available through Marchon. Retro-inspired rectangular design L2954 in rich dark havana acetate features the brand’s symbol – a crocodile – discreetly placed where the frame front meets the temples.
DESIGN ARTISTRY
Original Penguin merges a classical silhouette with a contemporary twist: the Jayden is a streamlined men’s design with a strong square shape and straight brow. This is a big year for blue tones in clothing and accessories, and the refined marine blue frame in acetate and metal complements
a variety of face shapes. Distributed by Continental Eyewear, Original Penguin frames combine retro and sport with relaxed silhouettes, plus resilience, quality and comfort.
Durability, style, quality materials and lens safety all enhance a brand’s credo. The name Fila will resonate with sports enthusiasts and the company’s essential collections of eyewear and active attire will be familiar with many. Fila was launched in Italy in 1911 by two brothers, and the brand is recognised for its young, sporty style in both clothing and spectacles.
Available through De Rigo, Fila’s brand ambassadors have included Björn Borg, who throughout his amazing tennis career won numerous major titles. The breezy casualness of Fila style VF1712 in navy blue acetate unites a contemporary streamlined design, distinct details and a brief splash of lime green detailing that exhibits a sporty aesthetic.
For spectacle wearers who prefer more dramatic eyewear design, Biscayne Bay by Silhouette manifests cool, edgy vibes. The Austrian label, internationally acclaimed for its timeless quality designs, creates a sleek wraparound with UV lenses. The dynamic character of Biscayne Bay is chic for outdoors and relaxed casual wear.
Shown in rich forest green, Biscayne Bay is also available with blue, grey or black UV lenses.
The Nike label offers sports gear from head to foot, with striking eyewear that include both sunglasses and ophthalmic choices. Distributed by Marchon, the latest design includes Nike Flyfree Soar 24001, featuring interchangeable lenses that easily switch into the tint that is best for the surroundings and offering 100 per cent UVA/UVB protection.
The ultra-clear, anti-reflective lens is built to resist oil and smudges, and the frame is also prescription friendly. The slim, lightweight design fits comfortably on the face, with bright and joyful colour – a burst of orange with pewter. Flyfree Soar is also available in vibrant blue and green.
The sporting life – actively or as fan and follower – is a pursuit for millions of people from youngsters to seniors. Sport personalities loom large as role models and inspiration, as well as their commitment to charitable causes. The sector continues to grow, and sport-influenced frame designs provide an empowering opportunity for independent opticians to develop their customer base, and to celebrate the dynamic influence of fashion and sport on eyewear. ■
