At 100% Optical last month, EssilorLuxottica previewed Nuance Audio, its open-ear hearing software integrated into a pair of frames. Nuance Audio transforms traditional hearing aids into a discreet solution for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. A companion app enhances the intuitive experience, while the frames’ open-ear design and directional microphones offer comfort and clarity in challenging auditory environments, such as noisy trains, busy offices or lively restaurants.
“Nuance Audio offers the world a glimpse of what’s possible when innovative technology meets thoughtful design,” said Stefano Genco, head of Nuance Audio at EssilorLuxottica. “Our goal is to eliminate the stigma often associated with hearing aids and provide a stylish, multifunctional solution that empowers users around the world. We look forward to building on this transformative innovation platform to improve our customers’ lives.” While Nuance Audio is not yet available for purchase, it has the potential to address the needs of approximately 1.25 billion people worldwide with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, says the company.
Stepper
Stepper Eyewear unveiled a new titaniumonly metals approach at Mido 2025 in Milan, meaning that all new frame introductions will now exclusively utilise titanium for their metal components. "This transition represents a significant step in Stepper Eyewear's mission to deliver eyewear solutions that blend advanced technology, superior fit, and enduring quality," said Peter Reeve, managing director of Stepper UK. "This strategic move ensures that every frame – from the Stepper Spirit to the Stepper Origin collections – provides unmatched benefits.”
Bausch + Lomb
Bausch + Lomb's Arise contact lens fitting system is now commercially available in the UK, Europe and the US. Using intelligent, cloud-based technology to streamline the orthokeratology lens design process, Arise uses advanced algorithms to instantly interpret corneal topography images and recommend lens designs in seconds. It evaluates lens centration and patient progress using its overnight outcome map library, recommending adjustments following overnight wear, if needed.
The Stepper Start range for older children, launched at Mido in February, now incorporates titanium components, extending these benefits to younger wearers. To celebrate this milestone, Stepper has unveiled its bold new creative initiative: I Am Titanium. The campaign is designed to highlight "the exceptional properties of titanium while symbolising strength, confidence, and innovation".
Peter explained: "The I Am Titanium campaign is a message to customers, eyecare professionals, and partners, showcasing Stepper Eyewear as a leader in optical design and materials innovation.”
“Myopia is one of the most common ocular disorders in the world, and by 2050, it will affect approximately half the world’s population," said Patrick Marsalek, head of specialty vision products at Bausch + Lomb. "Arise is more than a lens – it’s a comprehensive fitting platform that uses advanced technology to analyse corneal topography and, in seconds, create highly personalised ortho-k lens designs to treat myopia. Eyecare professionals also receive expert Bausch + Lomb support from start to finish, all through one simple interface.”

General Optical Council
The General Optical Council’s (GOC) latest Workforce and Perceptions Survey will be open until 27 April for registrants to complete. The aim of the annual survey is to learn more about registrants’ work experiences, including views on their job satisfaction, working conditions and of the GOC overall. New questions have been added this year to gain feedback on registration fees*, testing times and commercial pressures. Last year, 4,575 optometrists, dispensing opticians and optical students responded to the survey.
Steve Brooker, GOC director of regulatory strategy, said: “Each year, we learn more about registrants’ experiences, which help inform our work. Last year’s findings revealed a link between registrants experiencing bullying, harassment, discrimination, and abuse and their ability to deliver safe patient care. It’s important that we hear from as many fully qualified registrants and students as possible as your feedback will influence GOC policy. The data collected is also used by the wider optical sector to support their work, including professional and representative bodies, commissioners and national governments.” There is a prize draw to win a £250 online gift card for survey respondents. Find a link to the survey at www.optical.org
* The GOC has confirmed a freeze on registration fees for 2025/26 following its annual benchmarking activity, conducted with other health regulators.

CLPL, the parent company of Ultravision, has acquired Scotlens, combining Ultravision’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and global distribution network with Scotlens’ custom-designed lens technologies. Is the demise of NHS England a good thing? AN INDEPENDENT VIEW
The announcement by Sir Kier Starmer that NHS England will be disbanded, and direct control of the delivery of healthcare in England will be taken by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), may be positive for the long-term delivery of eye health care.
It was following the passing of the Health and Social Care Act of 2012, which created NHS England, that clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) were introduced across the country. CCGs have been behind the creation of a postcode lottery for eye health care in terms of the clinical care that optometrists can provide their patients paid for by the NHS. This has not only resulted in frustration and a sense of unfairness for patients, but also for the
optical professionals who take care of them.
The DHSC now has an opportunity to implement a new national strategy for eye health care that will improve patient outcomes, have a positive long-term systemic impact on the eye health of the country and take pressure off the NHS and save a lot of money. The DHSC doesn’t have far to look for models that have been introduced and work – they sit on England’s borders in Scotland and Wales.
But what would this mean for the independent sector? Well, the great majority of independents that operate on the basis of clinical primacy in their practices will be ideally placed to offer their patients a range of enhanced services. Those who operate on the basis of retail primacy will arguably find the transition more difficult.
There is, of course, a ‘given’ with this. The government must understand that
The citation for the Medal noted Professor MacLaren’s record of research excellence, his sustained impact in increasing scientific knowledge related to retinal diseases, and his efforts to reduce preventable blindness. He has contributed to considerable advancements in the understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in inherited retinal diseases, leading to the development of novel gene therapies to treat some of these diseases, and the application of novel surgical techniques including robotic surgery and artificial retinas.
commitment to improving quality of life through enhanced vision and eye health for children and adults worldwide.”
“We are excited to join forces with CLPL and Ultravision and become part of the SEED group,” said Scott Brown, CEO of Scotlens. “This partnership will allow us to extend our reach and bring our specialised lens designs to more patients globally while maintaining the personalised service that has defined Scotlens. The backing of SEED provides us with additional resources to further enhance our innovative solutions.”
introducing a range of enhanced eyecare services in community optometry must be paid for with a sensible fee structure. Perhaps the key to this is an understanding that this will be an investment and not a cost – paying back huge long-term benefits for the health services and the exchequer. If we believe government rhetoric, they understand the value of investment over cost – so perhaps there is cause for optimism.

Optelec: your partner for low vision services
The exclusive supplier of Schweizer low vision products in the UK, Optelec is the latest company to become a preferred supplier to the National Eyecare Group...
Founded in Germany in 1840, A. Schweizer began as a glass grinding company and has since evolved into a leading supplier of products designed to improve vision.
Schweizer manufactures a wide range of optical magnifiers, including handheld and illuminated magnifiers, stand magnifiers, monoculars, and specialised low vision lighting solutions. Its products are known for quality and innovation, such as the introduction of the world’s first LED illuminated magnifier and ergonomic designs.
In the UK, Optelec serves as the exclusive distributor for Schweizer products, making the company’s extensive range of low vision aids accessible to individuals across the country. This partnership ensures that users have access to high-quality magnification and lighting solutions to enhance daily living activities.
WHY OFFER LOW VISION SERVICES?
1. Expanding services and patient base
Offering low vision aids allows eyecare practitioners to serve a wider range of customers, including those with conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
2. Improving quality of life
Low vision aids, such as magnifiers, electronic reading devices, and enhanced lighting, can significantly improve a person’s ability to read, work and carry out daily activities. By providing these solutions, eyecare practitioners play a key role in enhancing the independence and well-being of their patients.
3. Professional reputation and expertise
Practitioners who offer low vision aids demonstrate their expertise in comprehensive vision care. This builds trust with patients, and establishes the business as a leader in specialised eyecare.
4. Increased revenue opportunities
Low vision aids provide an additional revenue stream. While spectacles and
contact lenses remain the core business, assistive devices often have good profit margins and can encourage repeat visits for adjustments or upgrades.
5. Meeting an ageing population’s needs
As populations age, the prevalence of vision impairment increases. Practitioners who cater to this growing demographic ensure they remain relevant and valuable to their communities.
6. Encouraging patient loyalty
Patients appreciate independent practices that cater to their unique needs. If an eyecare practitioner helps someone with low vision find the right aid, that patient is likely to return and recommend the service to others.

COMPARING LIGHT SOURCES
Table 1 shows a comparison guide of vehicle headlight power in lumens with everyday visual experiences. It’s important to remember that your patients are unlikely to know which type of LED headlight causes them the most problems10. City driving is different from urban and rural driving, for example.
This comparison illustrates that even the brightest vehicle headlights (HID, LED, laser) typically produce less illumination than natural daylight conditions. For instance, an overcast day or ambient daylight in the shade provides about 10,000 lumens per square metre, which is significantly brighter than most vehicle headlights. Direct sunlight is even more intense, ranging from 32,000 to 130,000 lumens per square metre.
It's important to note that while headlights may seem extremely bright when viewed directly, their actual lumen output is much lower than natural daylight. The perceived brightness of headlights is due to their focused beam and the contrast with darker surroundings, especially at night. In short, it’s important to understand that a narrow, focused beam is more intense than a beam with a very wide spread.
By following this plan, our profession will be able to provide comprehensive guidance to patients of all ages regarding safe night driving practices.

Celebration of innovation
100% Optical, held from 1-3 March at London's ExCeL, saw a welcome increase in the number of visitors holding senior job roles, writes Nicky Collinson
Show organiser, CloserStill Media, claims more than 11,000 people attended the event over the three days – with a nine per cent rise in optometrists and dispensing opticians attending, a 20 per cent increase in buyers, and a 66 per cent increase in senior level ophthalmologists and consultants for the co-located 100% Ophthalmology event.
This year's show had a ‘focus on the future’ theme, with some 5,000 brands featured on the stands of 250 exhibitors –including many of NEG's preferred suppliers. More than 100 hours of CPD education was provided through the Association of Optometrists (AOP) including dispensing workshops curated by the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).
There was plenty of on-stand education too, alongside the usual energetic catwalk shows highlighting frames, sunglasses and accessories from participating companies, and the annual Love Eyewear Awards.
Dr Ian Beasley, AOP head of education, said afterwards: “It's heartening to hear from delegates how much they have gained from our expert speakers and, as a result, are making a strong start as the new CPD cycle begins. Many of the delegates expressed their eagerness to engage with cutting-edge topics and gain practical insights that they can apply in their daily practice.”
ABDO director of professional development,
Alex Webster, said: "As always, it was fantastic for ABDO to have the opportunity to present CPD at 100% Optical and engage with passionate eyecare clinicians"; with ABDO clinical and policy director, Max Halford, adding: “Innovation was a key theme throughout the event, and it was exciting to see so many future opportunities emerging for dispensing opticians. This year’s CPD offering from ABDO was particularly engaging and provided real value to those attending."
CHILDREN'S VISION IN FOCUS
The show also saw Max Halford engage in a Q&A session with Mumsnet's Holly Doran on the Optical Suppliers Association (OSA) stand – focusing on the parenting platform's recent collaboration with ABDO, the OSA and the College of Optometrists to raise awareness of children’s vision and related eye health issues.
As part of the project, Mumsnet researchers have data-mined nearly 8,000 conversations about children’s vision on the platform over the past five years. They have also surveyed members to gauge their understanding about the importance of regular eye examinations, the role of different eyecare professionals and their knowledge of myopia control.
The preliminary results of the survey, completed by just over 1,000 Mumsnet users,
have uncovered confusion in a range of areas – from the different professional roles in practice, to myopia management products and the age when children should first have their eye examined. The full findings are due to be shared with the profession this month, with the aim of supporting practitioners in conversations around children's vision and eye health.
CELEBRATION OF INNOVATION
Commenting after the show, Celsa Vazquez, commercial director at CloserStill Media, said: "This exhibition is a true celebration of innovation, expertise, and collaboration and this year was no different. We showcased a new layout and reimagined floor plan, encouraged the industry to clock hundreds of hours in CPD, and witnessed so many exciting launches."
Celsa added that the second edition of 100% Ophthalmology "offered a dynamic platform for ophthalmologists to expand their knowledge, engage in meaningful networking, and collaborate with optometrists, fostering a spirit of professional growth".
Optinet business development director, Chris Smith, said: "We were really pleased with this year's show; it was great to catch up with so many of our existing customers and make new connections. The response to Nova, our cloud-based practice management system, was incredible – and our newly launched Patient Portal has already seen a great uptake."
100% Optical 2026 will take place from 28 February to 2 March at the usual venue of London's ExCeL London. Keep up-to-date with all the latest show news at www.100percentoptical.com ■
