Something Special on the North Shore

B

efore the 2020 pandemic, the North Shore seemed like an idyllic place with a high quality of life. The Coronavirus came along and created a different reality - one in which many who live in this beautiful enclave have been pushed to the edge of their financial means and beyond. Karim Virani, who lives on the North Shore, realized that a growing number people within his local community were struggling to make ends meet, and were in need of help. Due to a principle instilled early in his life by his parents, that one should always "sow where they reap", Karim saw an opportunity to fulfill a long held dream to give back to his community the kindness he had received from them. With this in mind, he brought together a team to launch a philanthropic venture called "Human-Kind". Its mission? As Karim's daughter Alyssa Virani describes it, "Our purpose is to spread kindness and encourage kindness in the community. Something very simple, but often forgotten.” Realizing that most students in their community looking for summer jobs were struggling to find work in a pandemic economy, they decided to bring

on a team of 5 post-secondary students as summer interns to get the project going. “We knew that we were providing a mentoring opportunity for them, but also an opportunity for them to explore and understand their community better”, explain Lynda and Loring Phinney of House of Purpose, a lead supporter and one of the mentors brought in to help guide the students. Karim shared his vision with these interns and tasked them with studying the local community to discover pressing needs that Human-Kind could potentially address. The interns came back with the idea of creating meal kits for families - surprisingly, in such a seemingly wealthy community as the North Shore, there are many families that don’t have reliable access to nutritious meals. The pandemic has only made it worse. The concept around providing meal kits stems from the idea that food insecurity often means relying on canned foods and other non-perishables. “We wanted to find a way of providing families with healthy meals made with fresh ingredients”, explains Alyssa. Further, given the emotional stress induced by food insecurity, they wanted to provide a

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the HumanKind team this summer. It was an eye-opening experience for me, both personally and professionally. The experience provided me with business skills that can only be gained through experience, and truly opened my eyes to the many challenges facing many people in my community"- Arden Thorne, Intern means to bring families together. The interns understood that putting this together would require fundraising, and involvement from a key player in the food supply industry. “I first approached Stan Fuller, the chairman/owner of Earls restaurant, and he just loved the idea. I suggested we talk with the president Mo Jessa - to try and get the logistics right”, says Karim. The interns began their presentations, and Earls was only too happy to get involved. With a partnership with Earls Restaurant and Bar, they started preparing to launch a program to address food security through the distribution of meal kits to families in need on the North Shore. “The interns also wanted to do something that would preserve independence and dignity, particularly with people that were accessing food banks or needing support for the first time”, explains Lynda. A healthy meal kit delivered to the ones in need, with step-by-step instructions for preparation, would ensure food security without compromising on dignity, while giving the families a shared experience of cooking and eating together. A brilliant plan, but how would they raise the funds? With the help of a local artist, the interns designed a bracelet made of white Howlite and black ironwood beads. Howlite, which is native to Canada, and the wood beads, are both representative of the natural wilderness and the outdoor lifestyle of the North Shore. Online sales of this bracelet will be one of the fundraising mechanism to raise money for the initiative, and, to spread awareness - by buying a bracelet, you can feed a family. A powerful reminder of how simple it is to show kindness and support someone in need. Through a combination of social media campaigns, presentations, and guidance from various mentors that were brought in from a variety of industries, the interns were able to bring in more partners and sponsors. As the word spread, more community members wanted to get involved, from the artist at 4th St. Laser Engravers who hand-engraved the bracelet charms, to larger entities like

House of Purpose, Neptune Terminals and Whitecaps FC. While, in the process, the interns got first hand experience on how to take an idea and make it function in the real world. We asked Karim how the idea even began? “I think it has to do with my roots, where I came from”, explains Karim. Having moved from Africa to London and later to Canada at the age of 12, he wondered if there any people in need here in the West. He always had a passion for giving back to society, he felt that sometimes people need to be reminded of the power of kindness. So, how can you help? The interns have set up a website at www.human-kind.com. You can go online and purchase a bracelet - that will buy a meal for a family in need. Alternatively you can make a direct donation to Harvest Project (link provided on the website), our community partner that helps identify families that can best benefit from this initiative. BC Shines Through

The resilience of BC continues to shine through, pandemic or no pandemic ike so many other places in the world, B.C. was hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. However, in speaking with numerous businesses within the province, we encountered a tremendous positive attitude and stories of silver linings, rather than a sense of defeat and gloom. The common theme of humility, kindness, gratefulness and a forward looking mindset among them was as much a surprise as it was heartening to see. The stewardship provided by Dr. Bonnie Henry, BC's provincial health officer, was another common thread, and was seen as pivotal in setting the right stage for early phased re-opening of BC's economy. "We are truly fortunate in B.C. to have had this kind of attentive and timely response", said one business owner.

From restaurants and vineyards to shops and car dealerships, there is a shift in how business is being conducted - some even say it's a permanent evolution with no going back. The change is reflected equally among consumers as well. Over at the Rolls-Royce dealership in Vancouver, they've noted that people who are buying Rolls-Royce cars seem to value owning them and driving them more than they did before. It's no longer just a status symbol - people are actually taking the time to enjoy these beautiful cars with a renewed appreciation for life. Similarly, they've seen growth in the economy car market. And while people are gladly back shopping for things they want, there's been a new found efficiency in the car-buying process. People don't want to linger around at the dealership. A transaction that often took a full day until earlier this year has

become much more swift - you're in and you're out. Eric Griffith, who is owner of Alta Bistro in Whistler and Chair of the Restaurant Association of Whistler has seen similar efficiency gains in their business. Eric realized that restaurants in Whistler are facing some very unique problems that maybe some of the other places would not face to such an extent. The restaurant business in Whistler is significantly dependent upon students and migrant workers from Europe, New Zealand & Australia. The overall Whistler economy itself is heavily dependent on tourism from around the world. The Restaurant Association of Whistler was instrumental in bringing together the food industry to collectively tackle the challenges posed by Covid-19, as opposed to each restaurant figuring things out for themselves. "They all know that we're stronger together than apart," says Eric. While they face a slump in international travel, they're also seeing a spike in local tourism and tremendous support from the community. "We've seen just a really great public display of support, essentially. We've never had the number of mentions and likes that we have had recently," says Eric. "Because, these are local people coming up - it's really cool to see that people are willing to share their experience." Their business has been "better than expected", and even though it's not at the usual high levels of the previous years, these restaurant and resort operators see this as a huge silver lining.

In speaking with Ezra "Ez" Cipes, CEO of family owned Summerhill Pyramid Winery in the Okanagan, we found out they've completely changed the way they do wine tasting. They now have a new host station and a waiting area for customers. "Everyone who comes for a tasting signs in and gets their first taste of Cipes Brut right away, and then they can enjoy the view while they wait for one of the socially-distanced tasting stations to be sanitized and ready for them," Ez explains. Most wineries are taking bookings for wine tastings, but they found that people are spending more time at their tastings. The overall quality they experience is a lot higher. "The level of service we've been able to provide with the host and the dedicated tasting stations has been high," says Ez. The nature of the business has completely changed while the quality focus has gone up very substantially. But according to Ez, the Summerhill team has been on their toes from the beginning of the pandemic. When the shutdown was still looming over BC, their team sprung into action, they had to think creatively. "Our wine sales team became online marketers overnight," says Ez. "It was amazing! Before the shutdown even happened we put a 'Hunker Down Wine-Care Pack' of six feel-good bottles up on our website, offering complimentary shipping on that package across Canada. It was hugely popular." Things are different on their restaurant side as well, because of distancing and the limit on numbers, they now have smaller groups. They see it as an opportunity for the restaurant to spend more time with the customer and to cater to them in a more substantial way such that the quality of their experience has also gone up. "Even though we only have half as many tables in our dining room as we did before, our restaurant revenue is only down slightly. The tables are all full. It's

been actually really nice to run a restaurant where people are there to dine, not just to eat, if you know what I mean." Ez elaborates. There is another common thread in the stories these businesses have to tell. All highlighted the fact that some of these changes will be permanent because they've seen an uplift in the overall quality of experience for the consumer. This has been a great silver lining presented by the pandemic. One more thing worth noting is the fact that the residents of B.C. are surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. The impact of this beauty on their senses and their overall outlook is such that it shines bright in their attitudes. The sentiments of kindness, understanding, and supportiveness in abundance have been another boon to BC's businesses.

A New Paradigm For Business Our Chat with Rolls-Royce's Aly Jiwani ith so much of the economy reeling from the effect of the pandemic, it is fascinating to see the real estate industry essentially thumb its nose at Mr. Covid. Frenzied buying of properties at all price levels typically reverberates through the larger

economy, as real estate is a key driver for so many related industries. We caught up with Roll-Royce Vancouver's Area General Manager, Aly Jiwani, to get his insights on the topic, and to find out how his business has fared through the same time period.

Aly, how has business been for Rolls-Royce this year? Aly: Our mainstream brands and our ultra-luxury brands are both doing extremely well. It’s the ones inbetween that are a little bit slower to bounce back. But Rolls-Royce is doing really well, and our mainstream brands' dealers are doing great as well. So it just depends on the brand. During the major part of Covid and the shutdown, it was very quiet. People probably didn’t want to show wealth or to come and buy a car because they’d have to sit home and couldn’t drive it anywhere. We sold a few cars in March, then Covid hit, and then they didn’t want to pick them up. Now they’re actually picking them up. I think that it was demand that was always possibly there, and now it’s coming back.

real estate market does as well. On the mainstream side the manufacturers have come out with unprecedented incentive programs for people to buy. So I would say that is a huge positive where especially, May, June, July, for the mainstream brands was the best time ever to buy a car. So some of the incentives that were available may never be seen again. One common theme we’re seeing elsewhere, is that businesses do not take their customers for granted - they’re making extraordinary efforts to retain those customers and continue doing business with them. Everything must have completely changed as far as how many people are coming through, and how you deal with them. What changes have you seen or brought in?

Aly: People definitely have a renewed appreciation of my industry. Both, on the customer's side, and us as the retailer. I think that people don’t take these purchases for granted anymore. I think the other major difference is that perhaps some people were maybe living beyond their means. Or buying cars that maybe they should not have been buying. Well, now they’re really reassessing what their true needs and values are. When they do buy our luxury cars, the transition seems to be a much more enjoyable and positive one. And as a result of their well-considered decisions people are really enjoying the car-buying process.

Aly: That’s a complete paradigm shift. So, two things - I’ve been in this industry for 23 years and we’ve been open everyday, seven days a week. Number one, we changed our hours drastically; our hours of operation are much shorter now - I think that’s good for both customers and employee morale. And we’re also limiting the number of customers we speak to in a day. But also, in our service departments we’ve totally changed the way we’re doing business. The way we sanitize people’s cars, the amount of cars we bring in on a certain day, all the measures to fine-tune our business. We’re now focused on the business itself and I think customers appreciate that. I think my industry got to a point where it started becoming like, you go to the dealership and it becomes a full day process where you enjoy all the amenities, and do your buying, which is great. But now people like to come in, do the transaction and leave. It’s a lot more efficient and the business that needs to be done gets done much more efficiently. So I think customers overall, have appreciated that more now.

I guess it makes it a lot more stress-free if you’re buying in that kind of a well-considered manner.

And we imagine with things like events, etc. it’s probably going to be a long time before they start happening again?

Aly: Yes and I think we’re doing a lot more virtual browsing and researching so people are a lot more prepared when they come in. The process of doing business is a lot smoother than it has been in the past.

Aly: On a monthly basis, OpenRoad hosts two or three events for all of our brands, but I don’t think there's even one this year so far. There will be one for RollsRoyce in September. It will be more modest than usual, but something we all look foward to. Instead of doing a three, four hour event, it’s going to be spread over three or four days with one hour time slots. And doing it much more customer centric for sure. As opposed to some grand production. So even the types of events we’re doing are much different than those of the past.

Through Covid, we’ve heard lots of challenging news, but there seem to have also been some silver linings, some upbeat stories of creative things being done to adapt. What changes have you guys seen or implemented - what's the new way of doing business, given the pandemic?

What else can you highlight as far as the positive for these times? Aly: I think that our market really goes by what the
