MARY KAY

Former Youth Service Bureau (YSB) Crossroads Director

For Mary Kay Walden, the path to leadership was not linear. It was redemptive. Her story is one of resilience, purpose, and the remarkable power of second chances. Once an at-risk youth herself, Mary Kay turned her greatest trial into her greatest triumph, dedicating her life to guiding others toward the same transformation she experienced.

Mary Kay began her professional journey as a teacher, a role that allowed her to invest in young minds early on. But her calling deepened when she joined the Youth Service Bureau’s Crossroads program as a case manager. Years before, at just 17, she stood before Judge John W. Greene facing adult charges. Instead of sentencing her to prison, he ordered her to a 13-month rehabilitation program, an act of faith that would change her life forever. In a full circle moment, that same judge later founded Crossroads, a diversion program designed to give juvenile offenders a new direction while holding them accountable for their actions. When Mary Kay learned about the program, she knew she had found her purpose.

Over the course of her career, Mary Kay worked her way up to become Director of Crossroads, overseeing an initiative that has changed countless lives. Under her leadership, the program maintained an extraordinary success rate with about 92 percent of participants staying out of the juvenile system for at least one year and over 80 percent for three years or more. She attributes that success to a devoted team, strong community partnerships, and the generosity of local donors and supporters. Through major fundraising efforts including YSB’s annual Chef’s Soirée presented by Chevron, she helped ensure that the program could continue serving the youth who needed it most.

I will never forget where I came from. My life is my testimony, and I believe I was put on this earth to do what I did.”

What Mary Kay loved most about her work was simple: making a real difference. Yet the challenges were real too. Resources were often scarce, and helping young people understand the long-term consequences of their choices could be difficult. Still, her passion never wavered. “I will never forget where I came from,” she says. “My life is my testimony, and I believe I was put on this earth to do what I did.”

Now retired, Mary Kay lives in Covington with her husband, her best friend and fellow retired teacher. Together they have four sons, four daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren, all deeply involved in their communities. When she is not volunteering with organizations like CASA, the Youth Service Bureau, or her church’s outreach programs, she enjoys learning, traveling, gardening, and watching the sunset over the water.

“This is the community that built me,” she says with gratitude, a fitting reflection for a woman who has spent her life building others.

More than $227,000 raised this year to support cancer patients in our community!

The Northshore Bounty: A Thanksgiving Table for All

The Northshore Bounty is more than a Thanksgiving meal. It is a ministry of love, hospitality, and hope that reflects what it means to truly serve others in the spirit of Christ.

Founded nearly thirty years ago by Reverend Kathy Abrams, this mission began with a simple vision placed on her heart by God: to ensure that no one on the Northshore spends Thanksgiving hungry or alone. What started as a small act of obedience has grown into a beautiful tradition that now serves more than 600 people each year.

Each Thanksgiving Day, volunteers from across the community gather at the Family Life Center of St. Timothy on the Northshore Methodist Church to prepare and serve hundreds of traditional, home-cooked meals. Guests can dine in, pick up meals, or receive home deliveries, reaching families, assisted living residents, first responders, and those without access to electricity or shelter. Every plate is prepared with care and prayer, offering not just nourishment but comfort, belonging, and the reminder that they are seen and loved.

At The Northshore Bounty, everyone has a seat at the table. From the homeless to professionals, from grieving families to joyful volunteers, each person is welcomed with open arms, prayed for, and served family-style. A team of table hosts greets each guest, shares a meal alongside them, and prays together, transforming a simple meal into a sacred moment of community.

Reverend Abrams recalls a moment that captures the heart of this ministry perfectly. “One year, I looked over and saw a homeless man, a church lady, a struggling family, and two doctors sharing laughter at the same table,” she says. “That’s when I realized this isn’t just about feeding stomachs. It’s about healing hearts.”

Behind the scenes, an entire network of faithful volunteers and local partners make the day possible. St. Timothy on the Northshore provides the facility each year, while Reverend Abrams’ son, Mark Nichols, has served faithfully by her side for decades. Volunteers deliver meals across the Northshore, ensuring that love reaches every doorstep.

As Reverend Abrams looks to the future, her mission remains clear: to keep The Northshore Bounty alive for generations to come. “Every dish we prepare is made from scratch and served with love,” she says. “This isn’t just food. It’s fellowship.”

At The Northshore Bounty, everyone is family, and there will always be room at the table.

TEACHERfeature

Who in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

I have always dreamed of becoming a teacher. From a young age, I admired the way teachers could make a difference in students’ lives, and that dream has guided me ever since.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

Every student learns differently, and meeting each child where they are can be challenging. But it is also what makes teaching so meaningful because it allows me to find creative ways to reach every learner.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching?

There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing the growth of my students not only academically but also in their confidence from the beginning of the year to the end. Seeing that transformation reminds me why I chose this profession.

How do you make learning engaging and fun for your students?

One of my biggest goals as a teacher is to make learning fun and engaging. I love creating joyful experiences for my students, whether it is through dress-up days, shaving cream spelling, class Olympics, or inviting family members to join us as mystery readers. My classroom is a place where learning, laughter, and creativity come together.

If you could leave your students with one lasting message, what would it be?

Always believe in yourself and make it your mission to make someone smile every single day.

SUPER MOM LOGANDoerries

Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship takes strength, creativity, and a whole lot of heart. Those qualities define Logan Doerries, owner of The School of Styling, a creative community designed for female entrepreneurs to connect, collaborate, and grow. What began as a dream to help women feel supported while building their businesses has become a trusted space where creativity meets confidence and connection.

After running her own event planning company, Logan saw firsthand how isolating entrepreneurship could feel. That experience inspired her to build The School of Styling, a place where women could learn practical business skills, connect with mentors and peers, and walk away feeling encouraged in both life and work. The brand now offers one on one consulting, brand strategy, and copywriting services, along with workshops and retreats that bring women together for learning and inspiration. Most recently, Logan launched Coffee with Creatives, a monthly meetup that celebrates collaboration over competition and supports local coffee spots across the Northshore.

“No one is you, and that’s your superpower.”

At home, Logan and her husband William are raising three boys, Shepard, Sawyer, and Sutton, who fill their days with energy, laughter, and adventure. Between soccer games and Spider Man missions, she manages to balance family life with running a thriving business. Working from home often means fitting in calls and creative projects during nap time or late at night, but Logan embraces it as part of this season. She credits her strong support system of family, friends, and her husband for helping make it all possible.

For Logan, the same creativity that fuels her business flows through her home. She encourages her boys to imagine, create, and find joy in the little things. The values that guide her business, connection, attention to detail, and community, also guide her family life. Whether crafting together, hosting friends, or celebrating milestones, she hopes her sons see that success is defined by meaning and balance, not busyness.

At 36, Logan has learned that gratitude changes everything. She is proud of the life her family has built and the work she has created that uplifts other women. Her guiding mantra, “No one is you, and that’s your superpower,” is one she shares often, both in business and at home. Through her example, Logan continues to show her children and her community that staying true to yourself and lifting others along the way is the most powerful kind of success.

The Fisher Family Home

Nestled in the heart of Madisonville, the home of Corrinn and Steve Fisher tells a story of classic design, thoughtful curation, and family life well lived. The couple, both Northshore natives, own Corrinn Fisher Interiors, an interior design boutique that blends refined style with approachable Southern charm. Together, they balance life as business partners and parents to four boys, Gabe, Ethan, and twins Alex and Isaac, each adding warmth and laughter to their beautifully designed space.

B“We love that it feels tucked away but still close to everything we need.”

uilt in the mid 1990s, the home embodies Colonial Revival architecture with timeless character and inviting appeal. The painted brick exterior, finished in Benjamin Moore’s French Canvas with smoke shutters and a Water’s Edge front door, sets the tone for what’s inside, a collected and curated retreat filled with meaningful pieces. “People always say the home feels peaceful,” Corrinn says, describing the atmosphere as classic, traditional, and cozy, an aesthetic that transcends trends and celebrates enduring design.

Inside, every room reflects layers of intention and history. Corrinn and Steve have spent years sourcing antique and vintage pieces from along the Gulf Coast, Dallas, and High Point. Treasures like an 18th century Italian marble top console in the foyer and a 19th century French oak cabinet in the dining room tell stories of craftsmanship and culture. The office features an Italian painted desk, while the breakfast area displays a French barometer that sparks conversation with every guest. Lighting, too, plays a starring role, most notably the organic, tree branch inspired Silva chandelier by Julie Neill that crowns the living room.

Although much of the home has been updated, the Fishers have approached the renovation process with patience and purpose. “We bought the home knowing we wanted to update it over time,” Corrinn shares. “It had such incredible bones and character, it just needed the right attention.” Eighty percent of the home has been completed, with plans to renovate the kitchen and primary bath next. Current updates include engineered wood flooring, hand selected marbles like Calcutta and Bianca Rhino, and thoughtful finishes that blend old world materials with modern function.

The home’s location offers both privacy and proximity, backing up to Fairview Riverside State Park and just minutes from the Tchefuncte River. “We love that it feels tucked away but still close to everything we need,” Corrinn says. This season, the Fisher home is dressed in shades of blue, green, and blush with touches of red and tartan plaid, a nod to traditional Christmas charm.

Every inch of the Fisher home reflects what Corrinn and Steve have built together, a haven that feels collected yet comfortable, elegant yet lived in. It is not just a showcase of design, but a reflection of family, creativity, and the beauty of creating a home with heart.

CHANDLER + BART

Some love stories feel like they were written long before the couple ever met, and for Chandler and Bart, that couldn’t be more true. After a year and a half of dating and a five month engagement, their wedding day on July 23, 2025 reflected everything they value most: faith, simplicity, and a love that feels deeply genuine.

Their story began across two cities, Bart in Baton Rouge and Chandler in Covington. From the start, their weekends together were filled with laughter, comfort, and quiet understanding. So when Chandler planned a surprise birthday night for Bart on February 28, she had no idea the biggest surprise would come from him. Before they even left his house, Bart asked if she had a gift for him. When she said his gift was “an experience,” he smiled and replied, “I have a gift you can give me, to spend forever with me as my wife.” Then he got down on one knee.

Through tears, Chandler said yes, completely unaware that the rest of the night would turn into one of the happiest memories of their lives. She had secretly rented a party bus to take Bart and their friends to Loft18 in Mandeville, where both families were waiting to celebrate his birthday. But instead of just celebrating another year of his life, they got to celebrate their future together.

When their wedding day arrived that summer, it carried the same spirit of intimacy and intention. They shared a private first look and vows at the Southern Hotel in Covington, followed by something most couples never do—forty five quiet minutes together, cocktail in hand, with no cameras, no pressure, and no timeline. Then, surrounded by just twenty five immediate family members, they exchanged traditional Christian vows at The Chapel of First Baptist of Covington.

Their evening unfolded with a dinner at Meribo, the restaurant where they shared their first date on the Northshore. The cozy, family style meal was followed by karaoke at The Green Room, where Chandler, still in her wedding dress, took the stage to sing.

Every choice was simple and full of heart. Chandler’s ivory gown featured a timeless sweetheart neckline, her shoes were ballet flats, and their color palette was beautifully understated. Her mom surprised them with a white chocolate raspberry cake, and their friends were stunned to learn that the “joint bachelor and bachelorette trip” to Cancun was actually a post wedding celebration.

From their small ceremony to a week spent between Cancun and Antigua, Chandler and Bart’s love story is one of joyful surprises, heartfelt faith, and the quiet kind of love that feels like home. Today, they live in Covington, the place they always knew would hold their future.

Direct FROM THE GROWER

The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.

Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.

Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.

Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.
