From the Editor As we close out another vibrant year on the Northshore, this issue feels especially meaningful. Our community showed up in full force this season, and nowhere was that more evident than at Mutts to Models. It was an incredible night filled with fashion, heart and the four legged companions who stole every moment. Covering this event reminded us why we do what we do. We are here to shine a light on the people, organizations and celebrations that make our area so special. The holidays are always a time for gratitude and we feel it deeply. Thank you for welcoming Social Northshore into your homes, your businesses and your community gatherings. Thank you for trusting us to be the place to be seen for business leaders, community events and the local charities that move our region forward. Your stories are the heartbeat of our publication and we are honored to share them. As we step into a new year, we wish you a joyful holiday season filled with rest, warmth and meaningful connection. We are excited for all that is ahead and look forward to bringing you even more stories that inspire, uplift and showcase the best of the Northshore. From our team to yours, happy holidays and thank you for being part of our community.

OCIAL’S “Magazine Cover” live auction fundraiser has raised almost $100,000 over the past five years, fueling the Scott’s Wish Duco Project and its mission to provide critical medical care for retired Special Operations Forces (SOF) K9s.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to this year’s highest bidder, Dr. Sajal Roy, and his wife Holly, for their exceptional generosity and unwavering support of our mission.

These extraordinary dogs—like K9 Ares, pictured here—receive no government support for their medical care once retired, despite their invaluable service and sacrifice on the battlefield.

Rick Hogg, a 29-year U.S. Army Special Operations veteran, partnered with Scott’s Wish to ensure that no SOF K9 handler ever faces the impossible choice of delaying or denying critical medical care for their retired partner due to financial constraints.

Ares, a 7th SFG(A) hero, served two tours in Afghanistan and was the only K9 on the ground during the 2017 MOAB (Mother of All Bombs) strike against ISIS. His IED and cache finds saved countless lives. He retired in 2021 with his dad and handler, Chad Davison, but the trauma of war followed him home. Recently, a stress-driven behavior led to a life-threatening medical emergency, and surgery became the only option to save him. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, The Duco Project stepped in—ensuring this hero received the urgent care he deserved. Ares made it out of surgery safely.

ABOUT THE DUCO PROJECT

These dogs give everything in service, and The Duco Project exists to give back—providing dignity, care, and support for the K9s who have protected our nation’s best. It is thanks to courageous dogs like K9 Duco that many soldiers are alive today.

LEARN MORE AND SUPPORT OUR MISSION HERE: www.ScottsWish.org/in-honor-of-duco

These K9s are far more than companions; they are steadfast partners who stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their handlers, fully prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect them.

Laurie McCants

DEALER AND MANAGING PARTNER, HONDA OF COVINGTON, COVINGTON POWERSPORTS, AND MERCEDES BENZ OF COVINGTON

W

hen many speak of leadership on the Northshore, they speak in terms of strategy and business growth. When they speak of Laurie McCants, they speak of legacy. Since becoming Dealer and Managing Partner of Honda of Covington in 1998, Laurie has built something far more meaningful than successful dealerships. She has built teams, careers, community trust, and a reputation rooted in excellence. Later expanding into Covington Powersports in 2013 and Mercedes Benz of Covington in 2018, she has created a multifaceted business presence that reflects both her determination and her unmatched work ethic. She has been with Honda for more than 27 years, Powersports for more than 12 years, and Mercedes Benz for more than 7 years. These are not merely durations of employment. They are seasons

16

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

of leadership, mentorship, and shaping a lasting cultural footprint. Laurie’s career began in banking, but it was in automotive that she found her professional home and her personal mission. Laurie loves this work not simply for its momentum, but for its humanity. She lights up seeing employees discover their gifts, sharpen their skills, and rise into roles that change their lives. She takes pride in helping them expand their earning ability and deepen their commitment to a demanding but rewarding profession. Even the challenging personalities, she says affectionately, are a meaningful part of the journey. Laurie jokingly admits she is never truly on vacation because her heart is always tied to the work. The long days are of her own choosing because she loves what she does.

COMMUNITY LEADER One of her greatest challenges is recruiting and retaining talented team members with strong character. The automotive industry is known for turnover, but Laurie remains steady in her effort to build teams that last. What sustains her is the feeling of handing someone the keys to their first new vehicle, or watching an employee become someone they never imagined they could be. Those moments are her fuel. She brings unwavering integrity, determination, and a relentless competitive spirit to the table. Laurie is not driven by being good enough. She is driven by being the best. Laurie arrived in Louisiana in 1998 without knowing the area or its culture. Over the years, she found friendship, faith, and a sense of belonging. Now she would not change a thing. She has been involved in many local organizations, including the St Tammany Hospital Foundation, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and First Baptist Church. She currently serves as a Commissioner for the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission and as a board member for Northlake Christian School, investing her voice and experience into causes that matter.

Laurie loves this work not simply for its momentum, but for its humanity.

Laurie has always been an athlete at heart, now enjoying swimming and Pilates when time allows. Yet for those who know her, working is not just what she does. It is her joyful pursuit. Laurie McCants stands as a pillar of leadership on the Northshore, known for perseverance, principle, and a profound commitment to people.

Benefiting:

Scott’s Wish is a 501c3 non-profit run by an all-volunteer team that strives to make a difference in the lives of both people and pets. Nearly every dollar raised goes toward helping sick people, homeless pets, and a very brave pack of dogs. Named in memory of Scott Lala, the organization has been spreading kindness, assistance, hope and joy since its inception in 2008. As Co-Chairs of the Mutts to Models Charity Gala, we are both passionate about giving back and helping others, and none of what we have been able to accomplish would have been possible without the generous support of all the sponsors and guests. Sarah Scalise STAY AT HOME MOTHER OF SEVEN

F

or Sarah Scalise, motherhood is not a role. It is a calling. Her days unfold in gentle rhythms that are anything but predictable. Some hours she is a chauffeur, others she is a therapy assistant, then a homeschool teacher, a kitchen nurturer, and always a steady presence of love. She laughs about their famously unscheduled lifestyle, but there is a quiet grace to it. The Scalise home runs on heart rather than strict structure.

Sarah married her best friend in 2002 and together they have been blessed with seven beautiful children. Their ages range from 21 to 4 months. Their oldest and only daughter leads the pack, and their seventh child arrived with something extra special: a blessing of Down Syndrome and a deeper reminder of God’s intentional love. The energy of a family of nine fills every moment with motion, conversation, laughter, and life.

Most of her time is spent with her three youngest either in the den or the kitchen. The kitchen especially is her center of gravity, where she prepares nutritious meals and gathers children around her like sunlight. When they are not inside, they are outside exploring, swimming, or soaking up the kind of childhood that is lived fully and freely.

Being a stay at home mother is a blessing Sarah does not take lightly. The long days may hold exhaustion and overwhelm, but they also hold answered prayers. She considers it a gift to witness every stage of development from infancy to adulthood, knowing that these ordinary moments are actually extraordinary in the span of a lifetime. SUPERMOM

Sarah believes being home with her children deeply enriches their lives. She is able to provide constant, Christ-centered guidance, tailor their education to their personalities and capacities, and pour encouragement into them daily. She hopes the skills they are learning will one day make them devoted spouses, compassionate parents, and faith-filled adults. At 45, Sarah reflects on many seasons of motherhood, but believes this current one is her sweetest. When their youngest received a Down Syndrome diagnosis, Sarah leaned entirely into her faith and surrendered the unknown to God. This season has taught her to slow down and to celebrate every milestone, especially the ones that require patience, persistence, and love. In those milestones, she has rediscovered how fragile and miraculous life truly is. Her greatest personal accomplishment is her children’s formation in their faith. She has centered the home around God and has watched her children embrace that faith as their own. Through them, she has fallen even deeper in love with Christ. She hopes her children will remember that they were deeply loved simply by being near her. That they were seen, valued, celebrated, and cherished. One of her favorite rituals is decorating the kitchen the night before each child’s birthday so they wake up to a celebration of their life. Sarah’s children have taught her patience, unconditional love, and what it truly means to love like Christ. They have formed her just as she has formed them, creating a family bound by faith, devotion, and the kind of love that transforms hearts. 60

Ms. Christy

BECNEL

NORTHSHORE HIGH SCHOOL | TALENTED ART I, II, III & IV Who in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? Maybe it is in my blood? My grandmother, Gladys Becnel, started out as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Belle Chasse, LA. That didn’t last long, though, since she ran off and married my farming grandfather, who she raised 10 children with. Honestly, I have always enjoyed helping others. In college, my professor often asked me to help him teach ceramics classes and I was even offered the job of taking over the ceramics department at Delgado, but that program went away before I could do so. What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? Right now, my biggest challenge is the amount of paperwork I am required to complete. Because Talented Art falls under the umbrella of Special Education, each of my students has an IEP (Individual Education Plan) that I must keep up with, which means tons of paperwork, meetings, uploading documents, lots of progress reports and more. I also need to keep up with critiques, grading, tests, observations and other assorted paperwork that is normally required as a teacher. All of that eats away at my time to actually teach, which is what I really wish to be doing. What do you find most rewarding about teaching? I adore watching my students learn new things. Most of my students 62

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

have taken a ton of 2D drawing and painting classes during their time in the Talented Art Program. My 2 degrees are in ceramics (pottery) and sculpture. It brings me joy every time I see students struggle at a new medium (such as clay) and then absorb enough information about that new medium to succeed at making pieces they can be very proud of. How do you make learning engaging and fun for your students? I try to tailor my lesson plans so that they are learning what I want to enrich them with, while giving them artistic freedom to make the project their own. For instance, we recently completed a sculpture bust project in which I taught them to make a 1:1 ratio bust of a fellow classmate. After we critiqued the busts for accuracy, I turned the sculptures back over to them and asked them to finish their sculptures however they chose. The result was that we took home 6 of the top 15 High School 3D awards at the most recent Three Rivers Art Festival. If you could leave your students with one lasting message, what would it be? Do the art that brings you joy. Use it as your voice. Be an inspiration. Art is like a candle... Shine light on subjects that need to be seen and heard without having to use words. Visually speak to your viewer’s souls.

From the beginning, Skylar Alexis Theriot and Cameron Kuhn shared a quiet kind of love, one rooted in friendship, laughter, and the kind of comfort that feels like home. After dating for 3.5 years, their story moved toward a chapter Skylar never expected to unfold the way it did, under the glowing stage lights of Broadway.

hile visiting New York with her family, Skylar believed they were simply enjoying a special trip together. The highlight was seeing Hamilton, a show she adored not only for its brilliance but for the joy of experiencing it with the people she loved. After the curtain call, she was told they would be taking a backstage tour which already felt like such an extraordinary treat. But the moment her feet touched the stage, something entirely different began to unfold. Cameron, standing beneath the same lights where actors tell legendary stories, created a new moment of their own. There on the Hamilton stage, he proposed, giving Skylar a memory that would forever feel cinematic and deeply personal. With photographs taken onstage and then throughout Times Square, it felt like a love story written at the heart of New York City. Their wedding day on May 16, 2025 carried that same feeling of romance and wonder. The ceremony in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden felt dreamlike, a garden scene softened with pale blues, greens, and pinks, and a gentle feeling of timeless elegance. Surrounded by sculpture and 76

blooming nature, Skylar walked in a strapless fitted lace gown with an overskirt and cathedral length veil that floated effortlessly behind her. It was not simply stunning, it was ethereal. From the garden, the celebration flowed into NOMA where a joyful second line carried guests from ceremony to reception. Music, laughter, and movement created an unforgettable procession. Just when Skylar thought nothing could surpass the proposal story, surprises unfolded again. Eliza from Hamilton performed as a heartfelt gift arranged by her father, followed later by a vibrant live set from Big Sam that brought joyful energy to the night. At one point, Skylar and Cameron threw Mardi Gras beads from the stage, celebrating their Louisiana spirit as their guests cheered and danced.

And then, when it seemed the evening had reached its natural close, Skylar made one last spontaneous request, the song Love Story. Half the guests had already gone outside for the planned exit, yet the remaining circle of family and friends stayed, singing and swaying, holding a moment that became one of the most cherished memories of the night. Skylar and Cameron now live in Ponchatoula and honeymooned in Nassau, but their wedding will always feel touched by both Louisiana heart and New York magic, a celebration stitched together by music, tenderness, and a love that feels beautifully unwavering. NEW PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT

ST. TAMMANY HEALTH SYSTEM WELCOMES

DR. ROBERT BAKER, MD Dr. Robert Baker, MD brings more than twenty five years of cardiology experience to the Northshore along with a deep commitment to long term cardiac health. A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Baker completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, followed by his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Michigan. His training laid the foundation for a career that blends clinical expertise with a genuine dedication to innovation in cardiac care. After more than two decades practicing cardiology in Las Vegas, Dr. Baker made the decision to return to his Southeastern roots and chose the Northshore as the place he wanted to raise his two young sons. His practice focuses on general cardiology, although his interest and expertise in the long term management of atrial fibrillation has been a defining part of his work. Dr. Baker is the inventor of the Afib Alert Monitor, a handheld device introduced in 2003 that allowed for early rhythm monitoring long before watches and modern wearable devices became common. That forward thinking approach continues to shape the way he views patient care today, which remains proactive, thoughtful and centered on long term wellness. Outside of medicine, Dr. Baker is creative by nature. He is a songwriter and guitarist with a passion for music, and he enjoys photography, filmmaking and tennis in his spare time. His move to the Northshore blends professional purpose with personal fulfillment and he looks forward to serving patients while becoming part of the community that now feels like home.
