COMMUNITY LEADER
LEADING THE FORT:
A VISION FOR WHAT’S NEXT
S
panish Fort is stepping confidently into a new chapter—one built on years of steady leadership and fueled by a fresh wave of community energy. Newly elected Mayor Brad Bass brings genuine hometown pride and a collaborative spirit as he builds upon the strong foundation laid by previous administrations.
Bass has lived in Spanish Fort for 36 years, moving to the city with his parents when he was seven. He has always viewed service as a natural extension of being part of this community. He and his wife, Joanna, are raising their daughters, Anna Katherine and Sadie, in the same city that helped shape him. Active in the PTA and Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, the Bass family reflects the values that define the Eastern Shore: connection, service, and commitment to one another. Bass’s background in healthcare marketing—paired with more than two decades of coaching youth sports—has given him a deep understanding of the families who make up Spanish Fort. His leadership style is grounded in listening, bringing people together, and working toward shared goals. Asked what excites him most about the momentum building in Spanish Fort, Bass points immediately to the schools. All schools in the Spanish Fort feeder pattern recently received their state report cards—and once again achieved A ratings. Several earned the highest ratings in their history. “This is a product of the incredible work our administrators, teachers, and students put in on a daily basis,” he says. “Our schools are a benchmark for our community and a huge attraction for families looking to make Spanish Fort home.”
14
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
BRAD BASS
His entry into public service began when a proposed commercial project sparked neighborhood concern. Rather than stepping back, Bass stepped in—working alongside residents, business owners, and city partners to find solutions. That experience revealed the strength of Spanish Fort’s civic spirit and inspired him to serve at a higher level. Today, he is committed to keeping residents informed and engaged. A new city website is underway, along with discussions about a City-wide app to streamline reporting, communication, and information sharing. “These upgrades will make it easier for residents to connect with the city—and help our team at City Hall operate more efficiently,” Bass explains. Looking to the future, Bass hopes residents will one day look back and say a major shift began during his tenure: filling empty retail spaces. “We aren’t generating enough revenue currently,” he says. “ A healthy and vibrant Spanish Fort Town Center and Eastern Shore Center will go a long way in meeting needs for public safety, infrastructure, athletic facilities, and even a new senior center.” Grounded in gratitude for those who served before him and energized by the possibilities ahead, Mayor Brad Bass embodies the best of Spanish Fort—past, present, and future.

Holiday TRADITIONS HOLIDAY ON THE BLUFF Photography by Cindy McCrory, Blue Room Photography
Each year, Bayside Academy ushers in the Christmas season with one of its most beloved and time-honored traditions: the Lighting of the Trees. Set against the backdrop of the school’s beautiful Bluff, this celebration brings together students, families, faculty, and the greater Daphne community for an evening filled with music, joy, and holiday spirit. The event features festive performances from Bayside’s middle and upper school bands, whose Christmas classics and seasonal melodies set the tone for the night. Carolers add to the magic, filling the air with songs that have long defined the warmth of the season. As the crowd gathers, anticipation builds until the moment the campus comes alive with thousands of sparkling lights. The illumination transforms the Bluff into a glowing symbol of hope, unity, and celebration. In recent years, the tradition has expanded to include opportunities to give back, such as collecting toys for local charitable initiatives. This added spirit of service highlights one of the core values of Bayside Academy—teaching students to shine their light in the community. The Lighting of the Trees remains a cherished tradition, marking the start of the holiday season and reminding all who attend of the beauty found when a community comes together in celebration.

Serving Those Who Served A New Chapter for Warrior Legacy Ranch
N
estled in Robertsdale, Alabama, the future Gulf Coast Veterans Community Resource Center (GCVCRC) at Warrior Legacy Ranch is poised to become a life-changing support hub for veterans and their families across the Gulf Coast. What began as a vision rooted in healing, camaraderie, and community is now becoming reality—thanks to nearly two years of fundraising, collaboration, and a remarkable network of local supporters.
Construction on the GCVCRC is set to begin in January, a milestone that Warrior Legacy Ranch President Patrick Jump calls deeply meaningful. “We are really looking forward to beginning construction on the GCVCRC this January. This center will be such a vital resource for our community — a place where veterans and their families can gather, connect, and feel supported. The services offered through the GCVCRC are built directly on the feedback and needs expressed by local veterans, ensuring the center truly reflects and serves those it’s designed to support.” Jump founded Warrior Legacy Ranch after witnessing firsthand the healing power of veteran reunions. Recognizing that many veterans struggle to plan or afford such gatherings, he purchased 20 acres with the intention of creating a space designed specifically for their needs—a place where they can reconnect, decompress, and heal among those who understand their experiences. 28
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
You don’t need to have served to make a difference. That vision quickly gained traction. When the project was introduced to the Baldwin County Home Builders Association Charitable Foundation, President Chris Farlow immediately recognized its impact. “This project allows us to help an entire community” he said. With nearly 10% of Baldwin County’s population being active-duty or retired military, the potential reach is significant.
Volunteer Your Time Serve as a mentor, career advisor, or peer-support facilitator.
The project also drew support from the PR Foundation, whose co-founder, chef Panini Pete Blohme, quickly saw alignment with their mission. “Along with adults with developmental disabilities and no-kill shelters, working with veterans is one of the three major prongs of our charity work. Knowing how underserved the veteran community can be, we felt this project aligned perfectly with what we’re trying to do. Once we met with Patrick Jump and heard his vision and personal story, it was clearly a worthy project.”
Promote Awareness and Give Share the mission, donate, or attend fundraising events.
Sponsor an Event or Program Help fund workshops, engagement days, or wellness activities.
For more information about Warrior Legacy Ranch, including upcoming fundraising events, please visit: warriorlegacyranch.com.
The first phase—a 3,500-square-foot resource center— will offer veteran-tailored counseling, spouse and family support, therapeutic programs, and community-building activities. Future phases include a residential dormitory and reunion center capable of hosting up to 50 veteran group reunions per year.

aster Joe’s journey to becoming one of the Eastern Shore’s most beloved restaurateurs is anything but conventional. Long before he was known as “Master Joe,” he was Xian C. Ou, a physician in Southeast China. His path changed dramatically when he was offered the rare opportunity to study under a true sushi master in Japan. Joe embraced the challenge, spending ten rigorous years in a formal sushi program—devoting months to perfecting even the simplest techniques before progressing to more advanced skills. When he moved to America, he adopted the name “Joe” to help new acquaintances feel comfortable, a small gesture that reflects his gracious spirit. In March 2009, he opened Master Joe’s Sushi, quickly becoming a culinary gem on the Eastern Shore. Diners from across South Alabama flocked to the restaurant, captivated by sushi rolls that are as artful as they are flavorful. Joe blends American ingredients with the traditional methods he mastered in Japan, creating dishes that delight both the eye and the palate.

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
REBUILDING CHOICE FOR Alabama Women
38
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
F
or women navigating breast cancer, choosing the right option for reconstruction is both deeply personal and life-changing. Yet across Alabama, many women are never able to explore all the surgical options that may be right for them. Insurance barriers, coverage limitations, and a lack of regional specialists often make the most advanced forms of reconstruction — including your-own-tissue microsurgical procedures — difficult or impossible to access.
Dr. Mark W. Stalder is working to change that. As the only surgeon in the region currently performing complex autologous breast reconstruction — including DIEP, PAP, and other perforator-based flap techniques — he provides women with access to the gold standard of natural, longlasting breast restoration. Unlike implants, these procedures use a patient’s own skin and fat to create a soft, warm, fully integrated breast that ages naturally, avoids common implant complications, and offers unmatched comfort and connection after treatment.

Despite the clear benefits, many Alabama women still cannot pursue these options due to insurance restrictions, outdated reimbursement policies, and inequities that limit access to specialized microsurgical techniques. As a result, countless women are told — or assume — that implants are their only option, not because of personal preference but because of limited availability. Recognizing this disparity, Dr. Stalder and his wife, Morgan, have become passionate advocates for expanding access and equity in breast reconstruction. Together, they are working at the legislative level to ensure Alabama women have the same choices available in other parts of the country — including insurance protections, fair reimbursement for microsurgical procedures, and the fundamental right for every woman to choose the reconstructive approach that best fits her body, health, and healing journey.

W I S H I NG YO U A
In addition to his surgical and advocacy work, Dr. Stalder will serve as a 2026 Shucker for Shuck Cancer South Alabama. Shuckers are a select group of Baldwin County community leaders who raise critical funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Chosen for their connection, compassion, and commitment to ending cancer as we know it, Shuckers help fuel research, support patients, and strengthen community resources. The Shuck Cancer event will take place at Oak Hollow Farm on April 9, 2026. Their mission — both in the clinic and in the community — is simple but profound: Every woman deserves to know her options. Every woman deserves access to the highest-quality care. And no woman should be denied reconstruction because of her ZIP code or insurance plan.

Holiday TRADITIONS PCA TOY RUN Each December, the Sonnenschein Region of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) brings holiday cheer to the Eastern Shore through one of its most heartwarming traditions — the annual Christmas Toy Run benefiting the Fairhope/Pt. Clear Rotary Youth Club. Part of a nationwide PCA initiative, the Toy Run unites Porsche owners and enthusiasts for a mission that reaches far beyond the road: ensuring local children feel the magic of Christmas. Dozens of gleaming Porsches from across the Gulf Coast will converge in Fairhope for the charitable drive. Participants gather in the city parking lot at the ballparks on Volanta Avenue, behind the Fairhope City Pool. From there, 30–40 vehicles — carrying approximately 60 members — will roll through downtown Fairhope in a festive police-escorted parade, making their way to the Rotary Youth Club. Upon arrival, members deliver a large donation of new toys for children served by the youth club’s programs. The event supports boys and girls from Pre-K through high school, providing gifts that will brighten their holidays and remind families throughout the community that they are cared for and supported.
The PCA Toy Run is truly a Godsend—not only to the families of the Rotary Youth Club, but to families across the Baldwin County community. Many of these families may not have anything under the Christmas tree, and the gifts they receive are not only a joy to the children, but a blessing that brings a smile to the hearts of deserving parents as well. We could not do what we do without the love and generosity of groups like the Porsche Club. - Charles Durgin, Program Director 42

SUPERMOM
Madison Stewart
F
or Madison Stewart, beauty has always been about more than hair — it’s about heart, healing, and the quiet moments of confidence that change a woman’s day. As the owner of Love Madison, she is building a salon rooted in intention, compassion, and the belief that beauty should feel personal. Her business was born during a season of deep growth, when she realized she wanted to create a space where women felt genuinely seen and cared for — not rushed, not overlooked, and never treated like a number.
“Leaving my previous salon was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but it was also the one that brought me the most clarity. Stepping into my purpose gave me a sense of freedom and creativity that transformed both my work and the environment I hoped to build. At Love Madison, the atmosphere is peaceful and thoughtful, grounded in the idea that everything — every formula, every conversation, every moment — should be done with love. What makes the salon special isn’t just the hair we create, but the atmosphere we’ve built.” Behind the scenes, her greatest motivation is her family. Madison is married to a loving, supportive husband, and together they are raising two incredible children, Jaxson and Jacquelyn. Funny, kind, and driven, they are the heartbeat behind her work — the ones who remind her daily that life is bigger than business. Working motherhood has taught Madison that it’s not about doing everything perfectly; it’s about being present with purpose. Owning her salon has given her the flexibility to build her life around her priorities, and it is allowing her children to watch her lead with courage, creativity, and heart. 52
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
One of the most powerful lessons she has learned in her career is that peace is worth protecting. Not every opportunity aligns with your purpose, and sometimes the bravest choice is walking away from what’s comfortable in order to grow. That wisdom shapes the way she leads her business — and the way she mothers. Madison’s proudest accomplishment isn’t a milestone or a title; it’s building a business that reflects the values she wants her children to grow up with: kindness, courage, excellence, and compassion. They have seen her work, pivot, overcome, and believe in something bigger than herself. “Love Madison didn’t just make me a better businesswoman,” she says. “It made me a more intentional mother.”
Your go to for weddings, office parties or any occasion! Chicken Salad Chick is made from scratch and served from the heart! Locally owned and operated by Peter and Misty Whitehead
Their family traditions are simple but meaningful — latenight talks on the sofa, car-ride karaoke, Sunday reset days, and celebrating even the tiniest wins. And her children continue to teach her that generosity doesn’t have to be grand to be life changing. Recently, Jaxson asked if they could adopt a family in need for Christmas all on his own — instead of him getting gifts, he wanted to give to a whole family in need. Moments like that remind Madison that her greatest legacy will be the love she poured into her children and the kindness she shared with the people entrusted to her. The Vanity—my signature makeup line—was born from a lifelong passion for cosmetics. My love for makeup began early; by age 10, I was already experimenting with colors and products, and at 12, I received my very first vanity. That special moment inspired not only the name of my store, but also the vision behind my brand. Today, The Vanity encompasses everything you need to achieve a stunning, full-face look with products crafted to enhance natural beauty.

Our products are crafted with the utmost care using high-quality raw ingredients made in North America that are cruelty-free. Many formulas feature botanical extracts, ensuring they are gentle on the skin. What services will The Vanity offer? Our services specialize in personalized color matching for all our products, as well as in-store makeover services for special occasions such as weddings, proms, Mardi Gras, and other meaningful events. How do you hope clients feel when they leave The Vanity? I want every client to leave The Vanity feeling beautiful, confident, and excited about their makeover or their purchase from my line.

GARDNER
Eastern Shore Cosmetic Surgery continues to grow with the exciting addition of Dr. Vincent W. Gardner, a triple-board certified surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in facial, breast, and body cosmetic procedures. His surgical background began in general and bariatric surgery, where he helped patients through major weight loss journeys. That’s why he has a particular passion for body contouring after massive weight loss, including procedures like skin excision, body lifts, and combination surgeries. Known nationally for training future surgeons and serving as an oral board examiner, Dr. Gardner brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to patient care. “I’m grateful to join a practice so committed to excellence,” he shares. “This team truly puts patients first.” Dr. James Koehler feels that helping others with your own unique abilities is so rewarding. He loves to hear the stories from patients about how happy they are that they chose to have surgery and what a positive difference it has made in their lives. "I think we all like to look and feel our best. Cosmetic surgery cannot create self-esteem, but it can certainly strengthen it. Seeing how happy our patients are with their results makes me feel awesome about the work we do. Everyone at ESCS goes above and beyond for our patients, and the great feedback is rewarding for the entire team."

EUGENIA FOSTER Eugenia Foster is a regional and national award-winning artist with work featured in galleries across the Southeast. Having lived and taught painting workshops in Italy, Manhattan, and Southampton, she draws inspiration from her travels and life abroad. Her semi-abstract paintings arise from memory, evoking a region or culture without relying on literal depiction. Though her work continues to become more abstract, it maintains the bold mark-making and strong palette that define her style. A Mobile, Alabama native, Eugenia has been named Mobile’s Best Artist seven times by Mobile Bay magazine and served as the exclusive artist for the Mobile Regional Airport’s Art Program. She now works from her local studio, energized by her four children and eleven grandchildren.

W
hen Kaylee and David first met, it was one of those perfectly ordinary moments that changed everything. David was managing multiple Club4 Fitness locations in Mobile and Knoxville, while Kaylee was producing the evening news at FOX10. One night, Kaylee walked into one of his gyms for a workout — and was greeted by a friendly smile and a compliment from David. That single interaction sparked a connection that would grow into a lasting love story with origins along the Gulf Coast. Not long after meeting, David asked Kaylee to dinner, and their relationship flourished amid busy careers and new adventures. Within months, both accepted exciting job opportunities in Central Florida, leading them to relocate to Orlando, where their bond deepened through shared faith and mutual support. After more than two years together, David planned a surprise proposal that perfectly reflected the couple’s thoughtful and family-centered nature. 68
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
During a Thanksgiving visit home to Fairhope in November 2023, he arranged a “family dinner” and “photos at the Grand Hotel.” But when the pair stopped to watch the sunset by the gazebo, David got down on one knee. A hidden photographer captured every moment — and when Kaylee turned around, her family and closest friends were waiting inside to celebrate. “It was perfect,” Kaylee says. “The surprise, the details, the ring — all of it.” The couple wed at St. Francis at the Point, followed by a romantic reception at The Venue. Kaylee wore a Maggie Sottero gown — the Derrick Marie design, customized with a wintry fabric for a soft, seasonal touch. The color palette reflected her vision of timeless romance, blending mauves, blush tones, and deep cabernet reds. Her favorite design moments included the floral cake arch and chandelier installation that set the scene aglow. Planning the celebration was a family affair, with Kaylee and her mom, Laura, working hand in hand to bring every detail to life. From choosing florals to finalizing sentimental décor prices, like Laura’s wedding dress, their collaboration made the wedding deeply personal and infused with love. Faith played a central role as well. Pastor Chris Bell of 3 Circle Church officiated, and the couple met with Dan Greer for pre-marital counseling that strengthened their relationship. Their choreographed first dance to “It’s Always Been You” by Phil Wickham — perfected after months of lessons — was a showstopper. From heartfelt private vows and a vintage getaway car to a heart-shaped almond cake and a signature cocktail honoring their cats, “The Purrfect Pair,” every touch reflected who they are: thoughtful, joyful, and anchored by faith. After honeymooning in Barbados, David and Kaylee returned to Orlando, where they continue building a life centered on faith, family, and service — a love story that began with one smile and a simple hello.
