Maintaining our 20 Vineyard Preservation Trust landmarks was a bustling endeavor in 2023. Our task list was extensive, and as many of our properties now function as year-round community hubs, a significant portion of our time was dedicated to tackling deferred maintenance, daily upkeep, and managing three large-scale projects across three different Island towns. Our team coordinated over 380+ events and spearheaded fundraising initiatives to support our endeavors. This snapshot underscores the dedication and hard work required to ensure smooth operations and healthy landmarks.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to John Klein, the former chairman of our board of trustees; Josh McCall, the current chair; the other trustees; our community partners; and our staff. Together, we are committed to preserving the past, embracing the present, and envisioning a vibrant future where heritage is cherished.
Stay updated on our activities by subscribing to our press updates and our social-media channels. These offer more insight into our bustling daily operations and provide transparency regarding how your generous donations are utilized.
None of this would have been possible without supporters like you. Thank you.
Nevette Previd Executive Director

From the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
I am honored to step into the role of chairman of the Vineyard Preservation Trust’s board of trustees, guiding the organization into its 49th year. Over 50 years ago, I first visited Martha’s Vineyard, as a young boy. I vividly recall biking around Edgartown and exploring the Island, taking in all its beauty, history, architecture, and character. While certainly much has changed on the Island, the Trust and our daily efforts remain steadfast — to preserve the Island’s unique landmark properties and bring them to life for our community and visitors.
In 2023, we undertook significant capital improvements on the Island’s beloved properties: the Flying Horses Carousel, the Vincent House and Gardens, and the Grange Hall. This endeavor exemplifies our commitment to bridging the past with the present, and ensuring community engagement with our historic properties continues to enrich and educate both today’s and tomorrow’s generations.
The Trust’s future hinges on expanding our endowment to sustain rising maintenance and operating expenses. Thanks to the dedication of my predecessor, John Klein, the Trust has welcomed a new generation of visionaries whose generous support has propelled us toward our $10-million goal, with over $8-million in pledges secured.
I sincerely thank our preservation partners, the Island communities, and our devoted staff for your unwavering commitment to our shared mission.
J.B. McCall IV Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Financial Summary
Fiscal year 2023 marked another growth and financial stability period for the Vineyard Preservation Trust as we continue addressing critical repairs, restorations, and advancing our mission. Operating revenue increased by 15% driven by solid performances in tours, rental events, leases, and our annual Taste of the Vineyard event. Despite facing unexpected capital projects, prudent management practices ensured flexibility in our operating accounts. The price surge in lumber, other building materials, and labor increased our general maintenance costs by almost 20%, but was thankfully mitigated in part by generously donated services from local contractor partners. We are grateful for Community Preservation Act funding from the Towns of Edgartown, West Tisbury, Tisbury, and Oak Bluffs, as well as support from our “Friends of” campaigns and our dedicated board and donors. Fiscal 2023 saw expansion in our endowment and reinforced our balance sheet, positioning us for sustained success.

Year in Review

As we look back on the accomplishments of 2023, it’s a year marked by planning, growth, and transitions at the Vineyard Preservation Trust. We embarked on a series of ambitious capital projects to complete them by year’s end, setting a strong foundation for the future of our landmarks.
With decades of service as a trustee of our board, John Klein spearheaded efforts to secure ten visionaries to close the gap on the Trust’s $10-million endowment goal. With this milestone achieved, he gracefully handed over his Trust chairmanship to Josh McCall, to guide us forward.
As we celebrated achievements, we bid farewell to Trustee Richard Canty. His contribution to the Trust has been invaluable. Kevin Myatt, the Union Chapel representative, was elected to a first, three-year term as a new trustee, and former representative Alvin Johnson moved to the board as its clerk. We were saddened by the loss of two longtime trustees: Robert Snyder, who served as board chair, amongst other positions, and Audrey McCargo. Our condolences to their families and friends.
Nancy Caraboolad, chair of properties, bolstered her committee by adding restorer Vaughn Butler to lend expertise on updating the critical deferred-maintenance plan, a timeline of capital projects, and considering new acquisitions. Thanks to Gerret Conover, who was consistently answering our call. Our trustees emeriti led a strategic planning session with a build to a full workshop planned for 2024.
In the spring, Sissy Biggers added to her community relations and historic walking tours director role by also becoming program director at The Carnegie Heritage
Center, building a robust calendar of events and exhibits. “Coffee & Conversations at The Carnegie,” a seasonal monthly talk with the Island’s most fascinating people, summer collaborations with the Edgartown Yacht Club on its 100th anniversary, and an exhibition by scrimshaw artist Darrel Morris were all met with rave reviews. The Carnegie’s team of educators, including Laura Pla, Lynn Murray, and Patty Topping, welcomed over 2,000 visitors for the season. We are excited to expand the tour program in 2024.
A variety of events aimed at broadening community connections were launched, including a new collaboration with the Edgartown Board of Trade, for the Edgartown Village Market on the campus of the Dr. Daniel Fisher and Vincent Houses, and the Christmas in Edgartown Makers’ Market at the Village Green. Generously funded with a grant from Rick Schifter’s Chappy Point to Point race, the market showcases farmers and unique makers from the Island. Despite a few rain days, the market proved to be a super success and will continue weekly on Tuesdays in 2024 starting in June. In August, the Trust partnered with Circuit Arts for a free community contra dance at the Grange Hall, reviving old traditions. Met with great enthusiasm, the event will become a quarterly one, starting in May.

The Trust fundraisers and friend-raisers felt new and exciting. Thanks to Patrons Party chair Michele Hedley and her dedicated committee, the 2023 Taste of the Vineyard, our biggest fundraiser of the year, achieved its goal with the bonus of attracting new audiences. Trustees Brooke Brown, Alice Indelicato, Melissa Hedley, and Amanda Phillips, and volunteer Allyson Pachios, rejuvenated the Generations Picnic with an exciting cocktail event at The Carnegie. Save the date of July 12, 2024, for the beloved family event, in Edgartown. Friends of the Vineyard Preservation Trust endowment — John Klein, Bill Weeks, Tuna Kiersted, and Josh McCall — hosted a party to say thanks for our donors’ generous support.
Rental events at Trust properties were up 25% from the previous year and included weddings, annual conferences, nonprofit events and celebrations. Circuit Arts had its second season as the long-term tenant of the second-floor theater of the Grange Hall, showcasing a fantastic lineup of music and theater, performances, and film screenings, year round. Traditions such as the Artisans Festival at the Grange Hall, the Built on Stilts dance festival at the Union Chapel, and the Hutchins Forum at the Old Whaling Church reminded us how important these landmarks are to our nonprofit community.
We are delighted to welcome new Trust staff members, including the talented Julie Hatt, who joins us as events and cultivation manager. Julie brings her extensive

Josh McCall, the newly appointed chairman, expresses gratitude to John Klein, the outgoing chair, for his service

experience as an event planner. In her role, Julie will oversee the production of the Trust’s in-house events, including spearheading the highly anticipated Taste of the Vineyard’s Gourmet Stroll, our signature summer event. Additionally, in May, Gretta Hehre joined our team as office manager, providing invaluable support to the executive director and maintenance teams, and ensuring the smooth operation of our organization. Both will continue to work on providing excellent customer service to the 380+ rental clients we serve annually.
Jaime Hiltz took over as the new manager of the Flying Horses Carousel, succeeding her mother, Robin Meader, who had served as the manager for 35 years before retiring. Jaime’s leadership brought a fresh perspective to the business, ensuring the continued success of this beloved attraction and leaving the 300,000 yearly patrons with smiles on their faces. We are excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Respectfully,
Nevette Previd, Executive Director Wedding in pink at the Old Whaling Church
The board of trustees and the staff of the Vineyard Preservation Trust extend our sincerest thanks to the following donors for their long-term, wide-reaching commitment to the Trust. This list of people funded our mission during the 2023 fiscal year ending December 31, 2023. Their support funded special restorations such as the Vincent House and Gardens, the Flying Horses Carousel, the Dr. Daniel Fisher House and Gardens, and the Norton Boathouse, to name a few. We are deeply grateful and continue to rely on your support of these landmarks — repositories of knowledge and tangible history that will live today and for future generations.

The Visionaries: Growing the Endowment
Extraordinary People Preserving Extraordinary Places
In 1946, Henry Beetle Hough, editor of the Vineyard Gazette, ignited a community to rescue downtown Edgartown from becoming a parking lot, and started a movement to preserve the village’s historic charm. In 1975, when Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. and C. Stuart Avery saved the landmark Dr. Daniel Fisher House and adjacent Old Whaling Church, they founded the precursor to the Trust, The Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Society. Their commitment and foresight have inspired a new group of historical preservationists, which today we call our Visionaries.

Friends of Flying Horses Carousel
Following the success of Shirley Hall’s 2022 “Friends of” initiative, a new group of benefactors, led by sisters and longtime summer residents Ava Goldson Crews and Erin Goldson, along with their steering committee, spearheaded fundraising efforts in 2023, raising $136,000.
This funding completed restoration of carousel horses King Coronet and Moshup, along with historically accurate coats of paint and authentic manes and tails for all 18 carousel horses. Additional improvements included rebuilding the brass-ring arms, restoring historic signs, and refreshing the building’s interior and exterior.
MAKING MEMORIES
The Friends of Flying Horses
Carousel’s summer fundraisers have significantly expanded the Trust’s support base, gathering a passionate community of families around this beloved property, reviving cherished childhood memories, and introducing an enthusiastic community of supporters.

Friends of Vincent House and Gardens
A standout example of historic preservation in action was the exterior and interior restoration of the Vincent House, the Island’s oldest house. Beyond that historical significance, the ongoing commitment of Mike and Lisa MacKenty, who hosted several “Friends of” events to raise funds for the restoration, continues the home’s family heritage legacy. Purchased in 1940 by Mike’s grandfather, John G. MacKenty, the house once on Edgartown Great Pond was cherished by generations. The town of Edgartown’s Community Preservation funding also contributed to the $178,000 invested in the landmark for completion of the project.

Friends of Grange Hall
Years of use and weather exposure have necessitated significant investment to meet modern building codes and safety standards. Our collaboration with Circuit Arts has revitalized the second-floor theater into a dynamic, year-round performing arts hub. We will continue our commitment to working with the Island towns. We will look to you, our community, to help raise $1.5-million this summer for phase one of the work on the Grange Hall’s foundation, replacement of its roof, and installation of sprinkler systems. We are committed to ongoing fundraising efforts to raise an additional $2.4-million to complete phases two and three, securing the future of this landmark.

A Stamp of Time

During the replacement of the 138-year-old Flying Horses Carousel platform in fall 2023, an intriguing discovery was made: a stamp bearing the words “Cottage City” was found on the back of each of the twenty-six eight-by-six-foot platform pieces. But where exactly is Cottage City? Well, back in 1878, Cottage City was part of Edgartown and included Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Grove, Vineyard Highlands, Eastville, Lagoon Heights, and the vicinity — and that’s how the residents of the old town preferred it. With only 500 year-round residents, however, Cottage City had little influence in town meetings and couldn’t prevent taxes (paid by its wealthy summer residents) from funding projects it opposed. After three unsuccessful attempts, Cottage City finally succeeded in seceding from Edgartown, marking a significant chapter in Martha’s Vineyard’s history. This move paved the way for Cottage City to evolve into a thriving resort destination, a status it proudly maintains to this day.
