Annual Report 2022
ABOUT: Since 1975, the Vineyard Preservation Trust has been investing in our island by providing places that build community, make memories, and tell the island’s story.
2
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Thanks to you, the Vineyard Preservation Trust is brimming with optimism and focused on planning and implementing our priority list of restoration projects. The only thing that makes historic preservation possible is a partnership with the community and a shared vision of the importance of these historic properties. Three hundred and sixty-five days a year, the resilient beauty of our landmarks stands as part of your daily lives. They work hard for our community as important gathering places, homes for local retailers and Island nonprofits, and special event spaces that hold our special memories.
In the coming year, we remain focused on planning and implementing our priority list of restoration projects and required upgrades for modern safety and energy efficiencies. We will continue to invest in technology to better understand how to care for our buildings in the short and long term.
hroughout these pages, you will find compelling examples of historic preservation in action and a transparent accounting of how we spend your donations, how the buildings are used, and what it takes to keep them in public use. A big thanks to all of the daredevils that braved extreme heights, small spaces, soggy bottoms, and our crazy event schedule to keep the buildings running well.”
“T
Underway is the restoration of one of our most cherished landmarks, The Flying Horses. Motivated by a dedicated group,”’Friends of the Flying Horses”’ engaged members from our community to raise all the funds needed to give the 149-yearold amusement the paint and refurbishment it needs. The result is that 250,000 kids a year, of all ages, will continue to ride into the future.
We are ready to welcome 2023 with a heightened enthusiasm and a continued commitment to community use and preservation as the core of our mission. We are devoted to developing a more robust maintenance management plan and exploring deeper collaborations with our long-term partners and new friends. We look to expand The Carnegie Heritage Center’s role as a cultural and diverse social hub that will engage the next generation of Island stewards by using the past to inform and inspire the future.
This booklet aims to be a transparent report of how we spend your donations, how the buildings are used, and what it takes to keep them alive. We are thrilled to thank our generous community of donors. It’s incredible. Many of you have been with us for a very long time. Some found us this year through Property specific ‘Friends Of’ campaigns. Others joined us at our super successful Taste of the Vineyard annual fundraiser or joined us as members of The Carnegie. However you found us, we are glad you are here.
Thank you for considering a gift to our Annual Fund. Your donation, no matter the amount, makes it possible for us to keep the Island’s most iconic landmarks in community use. This has been a year of progress. I am confident in your support; we will continue this stride.
Nevette Previd Executive Director, Vineyard Preservation Trust

MESSAGE
What would the Island be like if these historic landmarks were not there? Forty-eight years ago, leaders in our community saved downtown Edgartown from becoming a parking lot. Today, the Vineyard Preservation Trust preserves and manages a collection of twenty iconic properties for the community. What would the island be like if these historic landmarks no longer existed? Historic, classic, quirky, and beloved, Vineyard Trust’s iconic properties are integral to the fabric of the island, and central to the culture and story of life on Martha’s Vineyard.

We want to thank all of our supporters for the tremendous vote of confidence you have placed in our organization. As your Board, we are very proud of our accomplishments in the last 18 months and could not have done it without you.
As you know, we rebranded ourselves a year ago as Vineyard Preservation Trust. But what’s in a name?
VINEYARD — With 20 iconic properties in four Island towns, we are committed to the Island as a whole. From the Flying Horses and the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, the Nathan Mayhew Schoolhouse on Main Street in Vineyard Haven, Alley’s General Store and the Grange in West Tisbury, and the Whaling Church, Old Sculpin and the Carnegie in Edgartown; our properties tell the story of a shared Island history.
PRESERVATION — The strength of our partnerships are a key measure of our success as an organization. Preserving all of our wonderfully unique properties takes genuine cooperation between the Towns and their various committees, the local community, and the Vineyard Preservation Trust. Only by working together can we have the significant impact that is required to accomplish our mission.
TRUST — Fundamental to every good relationship is a foundation built on trust. As a board we spent this year focused on governance, including updating our by-Laws, changing and upgrading our accounting firm, and enhancing our committee structure. We have placed great emphasis on achieving transparency in all that we do and, importantly, added an excellent new Executive Director, Nevette Previd.
We look forward to continuing our commitment to the preservation and stewardship of your historic landmarks that make Martha’s Vineyard special.
Sincerely, John Klein

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMAN
The Old Whaling Church friends of
In 2021, a long-time Edgartown resident spearheaded a grassroots fundraising effort to paint the Old Whaling Church. Two emails and many conversations later, $320,000 was raised, and in October 2022, the grand dame of Main Street shone again.

Flying Horses
On its heels, another group based in Oak Bluffs, passionate about the Flying Horses, gained support and $313,000 in donations for the interior and exterior restoration of the beloved amusement (to be completed in Spring 2023). These peer-to-peer, property-specific initiatives, and a grant from the Oak Bluffs Community Preservation Act, inspired us to shift our thinking about partnerships, collaborations, who we know, and what we need to do to be a true island-wide organization.

he accompanying financial summary underscores the commitment necessary to keep these Island icons serving our community and visitors. We are proud to note that three-quarters of our annual expenditures are directed toward preserving these buildings and landscapes, which make the Vineyard experience so unique. This is only possible with the ongoing support of donors like you. Thank you.
