manager’s message

Change Comes From Within By Craig Pustejovsky Community Manager

As we enter the second third of 2018, there are already tons of memorable moments from this year. We’ve held great events that hundreds of you came out to enjoy, and I was happy to see many of you as we discussed our accomplishments and what’s ahead for the rest of 2018 at our Annual Meeting. Along with these great times, we also came together for two special events that weren’t on the original calendar. In March, we said farewell to Carrie Lienhart after she was promoted to serve as the Community Manager of The Boulders, a CCMC-managed community in north Scottsdale. Just a few weeks later, we wished Michael Brooks, our Maintenance Director since 2004, a happy and healthy retirement. We will miss Carrie and Michael’s knowledge, expertise, and passion for this community. It’s never easy to replace nearly 30 years of experience combined, but I am confident that we’ve found the right people within the management team to fill these vacancies. Lifestyle Director Melissa Parsons was promoted to become your new Assistant Community Manager. In her new role, she will work closely with the Board, management team, and me to help oversee the day-to-day operations of the community. Jake Monday was promoted to the Maintenance Director position. Jake has one of the longest tenures of the management team having served the community since 2010. As Maintenance Director, he will manage maintenance, repairs, and improvements through the community, work with vendors, and supervise the maintenance team.

I am proud of the work Melissa and Jake have done in their time here so far, and I know they will thrive in their new roles and continue their fantastic service to this community. These promotions left two more vacant positions, and I am confident we have found great people to fill these important roles. Effective May 1, Kelly Strand will serve as your new Lifestyle Director, and Mark Vaughn as your new Maintenance Supervisor. Kelly and Mark served in similar positions at a CCMC-managed community of nearly 1,500 homes in north Phoenix. They both share CCMC’s mission, vision, purpose, and dedication to community, and I know they will make great additions to the community and management team. I hope you will welcome Kelly and Mark as they begin their Vistancia careers.

President's Report: Be Active and Get Involved! By Julia Miller

President |Board of Directors

And so it begins! Your 2018-2019 Board of Directors is anxious to get started in keeping our community moving forward into the future as the premier community that we are proud to call home. As your new Board president, I wanted to give you some background on my history and experience within the community and community associations. This is my third year on the Board, and I am proud to serve as your Board president. Before moving to Vistancia, I served on my condominium association board from 2007-2009, and then served on the Vistancia PTO Board from 2010-2013 after moving into our wonderful community. So, what’s in store for us this year? The 20172018 Board accomplished so much, but there is always work to be done. Our new landscape contract with DLC Resources (see page 11 for more information) will require a bit of overseeing as we transition to their care. We have common areas that need renovations, irrigation work to be done, and new parcels to bring on. We will continue to be in tune with the needs of the community as it ages to keep it renewed, attracting businesses and families.

But, we can’t do this alone. We need to hear from you about what you believe will help our community grow and thrive. I invite you to come to our monthly Board of Directors meetings held at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Sign up for our eNews on myvistancia.com to stay up to date with our schedule. If you can’t make it to a meeting, we have a new way for the Board to address questions and concerns. You can either email us at TheVillageAtVistanciaBoard@gmail.com or visit myvistancia.com and fill out the “Contact the Board of Directors” form, which is sent to all Board members for review. If your issue needs attention of the Board, we will forward it to Community Manager Craig Pustejovsky to place on the agenda of our next meeting. I look forward to hearing from you and serving our wonderful community. I am excited for another great year in Vistancia!

Head Off Those Springtime Weeds! By Stephanie DeAlba

Covenants Coordinator

Weeds love springtime in Vistancia, but we don’t feel the same way about these undesirable plants. As the weather heats up, so do plants and weeds. And while you may go outside less when summer approaches, that doesn’t mean your front yard doesn’t need some TLC this season. Avoid violations and fines by being pro-active when taking care of your weeds so your yard and neighborhood shines this spring. There are many ways to combat these pesky plants. Did you know you can head weeds off in the rock areas of your yard with a pre-emergent spray? Pre-emergent eliminates weeds at the earliest stage of growth — as the name says, before (pre) they sprout (emerge). Of course, a pre-emergent will not work on weeds that have already sprouted or “emerged,” but once you have removed existing weeds, the pre-emergent will prevent new ones from growing.

How does it work? The spray applies a chemical barrier down over the top of the soil, which prevents seeds from germinating above the soil line. Apply the product and make sure that it soaks into the top soil layer is all it takes to work. Because we live in Arizona and cannot count on rain coming along to help us, you might want to water with a hose or sprinkler after applying to ensure it sticks. Pre-emergent sprays are available at most home improvement stores and nurseries. Be sure to always read and follow label instructions for best results and proper handling. These sprays last approximately six months, and the more consistently you use it the better it works. Make sure to apply it twice a year to reduce the number and possibility of weeds coming up and reduce the chance you’ll hear from me with a violation letter.

Meet Your New Landscape Management Provider By Dean Rodrigues

DLC Resources Field Manager

DLC Resources, Inc. is excited to begin a new landscape management partnership with The Village at Vistancia on April 30. DLC has grown significantly in the greater Phoenix area since the company began operating in 1989; however, we remain committed to fostering a unique company culture which emphasizes efficiency, quality, and safety. From the beginning, we recognize that your community is more than just a contract or master planned development. Vistancia is the place where you and your family have made your home. In our communities, we partner with the Board and management team to enhance landscape assets, manage costs, and protect property values by keeping the common area landscape in excellent condition. Communities are dynamic places; routine maintenance has to incorporate the flexibility to adjust to unique needs and unexpected situations. DLC recognizes this and has the experience to adapt and produce results for numerous Valley communities such as Grayhawk, Verrado®, and Desert Mountain.

In January 2018, DLC Resources became 100% employee-owned. We currently have over 340 dedicated employees.

We will start our work with a few projects that will help us gain a fuller understanding of the complexities of your community. A well-functioning irrigation system is crucial to a healthy landscape, and we are currently in the middle of a thorough assessment and analysis of your irrigation system and its needs. We will work with the management team on any necessary repairs and adjustments of the system. In addition, we will address the view fences that separate common area from homeowner property and identifying high-priority areas where overgrown shrubs and plants are encroaching into yards. We will also be walking the community to identify areas for potential future enhancements. If you haven’t already, you will soon be seeing our employees working in the common areas throughout your neighborhoods.

DLC is dedicated to using reliable, safe and up-to-date equipment. You will see our DLC trucks at Vistancia as our crews begin working throughout your neighborhood.

We are excited about the opportunity to be the landscape management provider at Vistancia. We will work closely with the management team and Board to make the common area landscape beautiful and sustainable for you to enjoy with your family and guests. If you would like to learn more about DLC, visit us on the web at dlcresources.com.

We have the perfect way to start your summer with our Summer Kickoff party from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 24. Say so long to your pencils, books, and teachers in the morning, then grab your friends, sunscreen, and bathing suit and head to the Mountain Vista Club pools in the afternoon to slide into summer! Speaking of slide, the Kickoff is the grand opening of our water slides for the season! Don’t miss your chance to completely cool down on our water slides and take a splash in the pool. The slides will be open from 4-6 p.m. May 24 and six days a week through Aug. 6. See the schedule below for our water slide hours and have a great time this summer. Along with the water slides, we’ll have hot dogs for sale (don’t forget to wait 30 minutes before heading back into the water), a DJ, inflatables, and tons of fun for girls and boys. All this fun is just $2. Earn some early summer allowance and come to the Lifestyle Office before May 22 to get your ticket. Water Aerobics Burns Calories, Builds Community and Friendship By Hannah Crosby

Lifestyle Assistant

It’s not easy to get a good workout in when the temperature reaches triple digits. But, we have a perfect way this summer for you to stay active, stay cool, and build relationships while doing so. Water aerobics separates itself from other fitness classes because of its friendly and social atmosphere. The best part, it's free! Lisa Siminoff, the facilitator of water aerobics, shared her story about how she got involved and became an instructor. “When I moved to Vistancia six years ago, I was looking for an outdoor activity and to meet some of my neighbors in our beautiful community, and I came across water aerobics in this magazine. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and exercising and decided to go to one of the classes and was so glad I did. Everyone was so friendly, and I felt welcome right away. The exercises were great and gave me a full-body workout. I began going every week and met some men and women that were using some of the exercises for their physical therapy. Water aerobics is even a great resource to learn about all the clubs, classes, and events that are offered here in Vistancia. I know I made the right choice and am so happy I took that first step to go to a class. As an instructor now, I take pride in volunteering my time to help people stay in shape and create a healthy and fun way to exercise for free. It’s a nice time to see a lot of my friends that started with me six years ago and meet new friends every week.” For Lisa, water aerobics went from being a fitness class to a fitness family. Ultimately, her love for the class gave her the drive to become the instructor. If you would like to become a part of the water aerobics family, contact Lisa at siminoff77@yahoo.com for more information and give it a try.

Graduation Season:DATES AND TIMES TO KNOW By Endia Fontanez Liberty HS Student

Promote Your Business HERE!

As summertime nears, the Class of 2018 is taking their last finals, getting their yearbooks filled with signatures, and preparing to say goodbye to Liberty High School as they look forward to their long-awaited graduation day. Parents of seniors may find themselves fretting about trying to get the whole family together to see their child finally graduate, while younger siblings are already looking forward to the changes they’ll make to their older sibling’s room once they’re off at college. Graduation season can be a lot of fun, but it can also be hard to keep track of everything. Here are just some of the more important details you’ll need to know if you’re gearing up for graduation season. While the last day of school for seniors this year is on Friday, May 11, they will still have to show up for graduation practice at 7:45 a.m. Monday, May 14, in the gym. Attending practice is mandatory for anyone wishing to participate in the formal ceremony. The practice will ensure seniors are well-versed in the seating arrangement, procession directions, and behavior etiquette.

LOOK!

YO U

MADE

The graduation ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 17 at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The ceremony will last for approximately 90 minutes and will follow the graduation of another school, so traffic in and out will be hectic. Plan accordingly and arrive early to ensure you and your family have sufficient time to park and enter the stadium. Seniors will have an earlier arrival time which will be discussed at the graduation practice. We know this is an exciting time for your child, but noisemakers such as air horns are not allowed. The ceremony will move at a brisk pace and any loud noises could overlap and disrupt other names being announced. More information regarding parking and expectations will be sent out before the ceremony. Congratulations to the Class of 2018 and their families! ®

vistancia elementary A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A WISH. - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Let us help you reach your goal.

ADVERTISE WITH US!

Hello Vistancia Community! By Joshua Rawlings Principal

I am excited to formally work with all of you as the new principal for Vistancia Elementary. The school board elected on March 14 to remove the interim label from my title and install me as the principal moving forward. I could not be more pleased, and I am excited to lead Vistancia through the rest of this school year and beyond. We have many exciting opportunities coming up to close out the school year. We recently completed state testing for third though eighth graders in Language Arts, Math, Writing, and Science. We’re now in the planning and implementing phases of our “The Leader in Me” framework which is set to kickoff Aug. 8 when we return from summer break. With this new program, students will learn first-hand about leadership skills, habits, and goals. The Franklin Covey group will train all school staff at the start of summer as we prepare to impart knowledge about communication, proactive decision making, goal setting, and motivation to our students. It will be a journey from which students, staff, and families will all learn and grow, and we look forward to sharing in this exciting opportunity with you.

(480) 648-4859

We know funding and putting in place such a program will take a coordinated effort from all our stakeholders. We are looking for businesses or individuals who would like to sponsor to help fund the implementation of the program, student workbooks, and our staff trainings. Tax credit donations can also help fund this incredible program as we aim to provide our students with opportunities to develop their full potential as learners and leaders in our school and community. Thank you for all that you do for our students, staff, and community. We are looking forward to continuing our tradition of excellence and working to make it even greater.

Happy Valley Parkway Widening Project By Bridget Binsbacher

Mesquite District Representative | Peoria City Council

Moving residents safely and efficiently is a top priority, and I’m excited to announce the city has plans to improve one of our busiest roadways. Entering in the final design phase, this project will widen Happy Valley Parkway from Lake Pleasant Parkway to Loop 303. The new roadway will contain three lanes in each direction and new pedestrian/bicycle paths never before constructed in Peoria. This project aims not only to enhance the functionality of the roadway but also incorporate community art to beautify the bridge. Street light columns will provide a canvas for mosaic art pieces that will be inspired from local artists and students. Input from local schools and the public for these pieces is slated to begin in the fall. Finally, as part of this multi-phased project, signal improvements are coming to 100th Lane. This will provide signalized access from Happy Valley Road to the Lake Pleasant Pavilion center, allowing for safe turns for residents traveling west toward the Loop 303 and Vistancia. It will also provide a safe connection across Happy Valley Road between the shopping plazas. Construction is scheduled for fall 2018. This project will bring needed relief to Happy Valley Parkway and make traveling on our Peoria roads even safer.

NEW AND UPCOMING BUSINESS New business development is bustling in the Mesquite district. Currently under construction along 67th Ave. and Happy Valley Road are an urgent care center, auto parts store, and much more. A new senior living facility will also soon begin construction. This 136,000 square-foot state of the art facility will feature both independent and assisted units as well as memory care rooms to service the spectrum of needs for our senior population. Moving west along Happy Valley, we look forward to welcoming a new Native Grill and Wings, which is coming soon in the Fry’s plaza. Vistancia residents will also enjoy a new bar and grill on the corner of El Mirage and Vistancia Roads. The future is bright in the Mesquite District thanks to new and emerging businesses.

What would you like to see in your community? If there is something you would like to see in our district or if you have any concerns, I want to know. Make Pool Safety the #1 Priority This Summer By Charles Bezio

North Precinct Commander Peoria Police Department

city briefs PEORIA CITY COUNCIL STUDIES BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019 The Peoria City Council has reviewed the Fiscal Year 2019 budget. The $660 million budget maintains core citizen services with small, but necessary, adjustments to utility rates and without any increases to taxes. “The FY 2019 proposed budget addresses key areas that council and city leadership have prioritized for the coming year, including public safety, economic development, neighborhood initiatives, youth and recreation, and capital improvements,” said Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne. “The budget is an excellent balance that will both address community needs and maintain the city’s healthy fiscal path.” As the community grows, new projects and amenities are needed to serve a growing population and maintain service levels. This includes funding for the construction of several major projects already underway, including the expansion of the Pyramid Peak Water Treatment Plant, the Happy Valley Road Widening between Lake Pleasant Parkway and the Agua Fria River. The budget also creates 12 new positions within the Peoria Police Department to enhance public safety: three police officers, six police service officers, a police support assistant, a communications specialist, and a crime prevention education coordinator. Visit peoriaaz.gov/budget to view the city’s full budget.

Coming into the summer months, I want to dedicate this month’s article to a very serious topic: child safety around water. Every year, we hear tragic stories of child drownings. According to the Center for Disease Control, 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day, and for every child that dies from drowning, another five are treated in emergency rooms for near drownings. There are several misconceptions about drowning, such as it takes minutes for someone to drown, and that someone who is struggling in water would be easy to notice because they will cry out and splash around. This is not necessarily the case. Children have drowned in pools unnoticed by family members playing nearby, and people who are drowning have to be able to breathe in order to speak so they can’t yell. Also, in their effort to get to the surface, their arms may not extend too far above the surface of the water to splash around, so a casual observer may not notice the person struggling, and someone may only be able to fight for a very short period before submerging under water. Here are a few tips when it comes to watching children around water: • Don’t depend on your ears to monitor children; watch your kids. • Watch for signs of struggling. Does a child appear to be having difficulty getting to the surface of the water or moving awkwardly under water? Check on them to be safe. • Even if your child is a strong swimmer, do not become complacent in monitoring them around water. • If you are a pool owner, make sure you keep your pool gate locked, keep furniture and other items that can be used for climbing away from the pool fence, and make sure you keep your doors leading to the pool area closed and locked when not outside. Don’t let tragedy happen to your family; watch your children around water.
