We recently purchased a home in Arizona “while living in Illinois, which being across the country definitely adds layers of difficulty. Jay and his staff were wonderful! They all went above and beyond to help us through the transaction, from starting out by sending a video walk through of the property clear through the closing of the sale. I am the type of person who has a lot of questions and the whole team was super responsive and always got me an answer. I highly recommend Jay and his entire staff!” -Julie K

manager’s message

Honoring the Volunteer of the Year By Craig Pustejovsky Community Manager

One of the main goals of the management team is building a sense of community to make sure you enjoy life in the place you call home. But, we don’t do this alone. We are fortunate to have a great group of volunteers in the community that are ready to give back and help when the need arises. Whether it’s serving on the Board or on a committee, it is always wonderful to see residents taking part to make this the great community people love to live in. These residents go above and beyond for the community, and it is a great sight to see the number of volunteers continually increase. To show our appreciation, we choose a special volunteer as our annual volunteer of the year. We recognize this honor at our Annual Meeting and engrave their name on the volunteer of the year plaque that is displayed by the entrance of the Association Office. This year’s volunteer of the year, Virginia Cornelius, exemplifies what it is to be an outstanding member of the community and great volunteer. Virginia Cornelius

Virginia has been an active member of the community for some time now. She serves on our Activities Committee, playing an integral role in helping decide the events the community will enjoy. She is also vice president of administration for the MOMS Club of Vistancia, a group of more than 60 mothers in the community. The MOMS Club not only comes together for events for their kids but gives back to the community through charitable work and runs our monthly Storytime event. If you’ve ever brought your child or grandchild to this fun, free event in the Association Office, you’ve seen Virginia read a story, hand out snacks, and lead Storytime. I hope you will join me in honoring Virginia for her service to this community and be inspired to volunteer in your community. We’re saving the 2018 volunteer of the year award for you.

2018-2019

The ballots have been counted and your 2018-2019 Board of Directors are set! Two open seats on the Board were filled after results were announced at the Annual Meeting on March 20. Jeff McNaughton and Rick Eckenrode were elected to two-year terms, replacing Kayte Comes and John Fairchild on the Board. Staying Cool at the Pools By Jake Monday

Maintenance Coordinator

Spring training has ended and the countdown to summer is underway! It won’t be long before school gets out and our water slides are open (check out next month’s issue of the magazine for more information). The temperatures are rising, but don’t worry, our community pools are open for business. Both the Mountain Vista Club and Foothills Center pools were closed in late February and early March for annual maintenance. This was done at the time when temperatures were cool and the pools would be utilized the least. We even ran into a few rainy days that delayed work a bit, but both pools opened by Spring Break for families to enjoy on their time off. While you may not notice the “cool” improvements now, some of the work performed will help go a long way toward staying cool when the temperatures head back into the triple digits.

NEW SHADE STRUCTURES Shade umbrellas were installed at the Mountain Vista Club late last year and have been a huge hit so far. A large shade structure was installed at the Foothills Center pool last month which will give plenty of shady area for everyone to enjoy.

COOL DECK RECOATED Not only will you stay cool under the shade, you’ll avoid a dreaded hot walk from your chair to the pool with a fresh coat of cool deck applied to the Foothills Center pool (this was done to the MVC Pools last year during annual maintenance). The cool deck lowers the surface temperature so it’s tolerable even in the Arizona summer and creates a slip-resistant surface to help avoid wet falls. Stay cool, be safe, and have fun at the pools this year!

communications brief

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MYVISTANCIA.COM!

By Adam Rosen

Communications Coordinator

There was no cake, and we had already used up the circus act during the Annual Meeting earlier in the month, but we celebrated an important birthday in the Association Office a few days ago. Our community website turned one, and what a year it has been! The clean design and easy accessibility on mobile devices have been two of the biggest benefits over the last year, but there’s so much more to explore. Have you checked out what’s new on myvistancia.com recently? There’s something on there for everyone! The calendar is a handy tool to learn more about clubs, classes, and events and when they will happen. The online forms are an easy way to submit a modification application or report a violation or maintenance concern. We’ve also recently created a form to report an issue or concern to the Board of Directors. This form is sent to all Board members to review. Anything requiring attention of the Board will be placed on the agenda of the next Board meeting.

The Business Directory is a great resource of local businesses in a variety of categories. Whether you’re looking for a local house painter, landscaping, restaurant, or other nearby businesses, you can find it on our Directory. It has been a positive year overall, but like with anything, there’s always some growing pains that need to be addressed in the second year. We often receive calls from residents looking for certain pages on the website. We are looking into ways to create a top viewed and requested page section to make things easier to find and access. One of those consistently top viewed pages is our photo galleries. We will be exploring our options in the coming months to improve these photo galleries to show the fun the community has when it comes together at our great events. I’m looking forward to year two of myvistancia.com. Here’s to hoping for continued progress and great communications before it hits the terrible twos.

news briefs BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING RECAP Along with their usual business, the VVA Board of Directors accepted a bid to install a hot water tank for the showers at the Foothills Center pool. The tank was installed during the maintenance period at the pool in early March. See page 9 for more information on our annual pool maintenance and the other work performed. The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the MVC Clubhouse. An agenda and packet will be posted prior to the meeting.

Farewell and Thank You! By Carrie Lienhart

Assistant Comminity Manager

My first article for this magazine talked about covenants issues - trash cans and basketball hoops, to be specific - in our debut issue. My hair was shorter, my kids were younger, and the magazine was just starting to take shape. “Vistancia has a bright future ahead of it,” said Lisa Lundskow, the community manager at the time, in that same issue in September 2008. She was, and still is, right, that this community has a bright future ahead as I write my final article to the community. Last month, I accepted a promotion to become the Community Manager at The Boulders, a community association in north Scottsdale. While I may no longer be a member of the Vistancia community, I’ll still be in the CCMC family. It is bittersweet to leave Vistancia. I’ve watched this community and your families grow over the last 13 years, and I’m so proud of the work the management team has been able to accomplish. Before I go, I want to say thank you…

GET YOUR NEWS BY TEXT MESSAGE What’s the fastest and easiest way to receive community news? By text message with our new text list! With our new text list, you will receive texts about events, meetings, and emergency alerts. Join today and hear the news first! Text Vistancia to 77948 to join. Message and data rates may apply.

Thank you to the past and present members of the Board of Directors for allowing us to do what we do every day and believing in our mission and purpose to serve this community. Thank you to Todd, Lisa, Vanessa, Wendy and Craig, the community managers I’ve served under and learned from your expertise along the way, all the management team members and committee members I’ve had the pleasure to work with that have made this a fun and inviting home away from home. Most importantly, thank you to you, the residents of this amazing community. Our goal at CCMC is to make this feel like home. But, it’s you who have made me feel at home. Thank you for being involved in your community, attending events, and treating me like a member of the family. I will always cherish my time here in Vistancia.

Raise a Glass to Community! By Melissa Parsons Lifestyle Director

Whether it comes in a bottle, box, growler, or can, there are many ways to enjoy the occasional libation at the end of the day. While we’re not in St. Louis, Milwaukee, or the Rockies, we’re fortunate to have breweries and wineries in the Valley to try local specialties. We’re bringing a few of them together for you to sample and enjoy during our first Beer and Wine Fest on Saturday, April 28! There will be something for every adult’s palate from 6-9 p.m. on the MVC Event Lawn. If a cold brew is your style, enjoy something from Peoria Artisan Brewery right here in Peoria. If you prefer grapes to hops and barley, head over to The Windmill Winery from Florence, AZ, or Direct Cellars, a mail-order wine club bringing you some of their favorites. You’ll be able to try four tastings for your $10 ticket, which also gets you a brat or hot dog meal, live music by City Nights and entertainment, and the chance to complete in cornhole and beer pong games. There will be more than just samples for sale, too, to keep your thirst quenched throughout the night. Vendors will be selling glasses of their delicacies if you find a taste you really like. Enjoy (responsibly) a nice night out in your community with your friends and neighbors! Tickets are available online and at the Lifestyle office through April 26, and at the event. Special thanks to Cross of Glory Church, Zona Communications, and Legacy Smiles Dentistry for sponsoring the Beer and Wine Festival.

Sound Beginnings Shapes Minds While Having Fun By Hannah Crosby Lifestyle Assistant

At a very young age, babies and toddlers can absorb an immense amount of knowledge. This is the prime age to start to teach identification of language and music. A class that we offer specifically for kids up to 4 years old is Sound Beginnings Music. This music class is an interactive music program that explores music concepts such as rhythm, intonation, and harmony. Musical melodies also teach preschool fundamentals of alphabet sounds, numbers, shapes, and color recognition. Certified instructor Melissa Nielsen explains how she got involved in the program. Her passion to teach and educate toddlers is shown through her exciting and creative teaching techniques. “I became a Sound Beginnings instructor a couple years ago after I witnessed the benefits the program had on my own children. As a mom of four boys, finding a program that kept my active children’s interest and taught them concepts that led to a love of music convinced me to become a teacher myself.

A...B...C...

One of my Sound Beginnings parents shared about her son’s experience with the class: “When we first began Sound Beginnings my son had a severe speech delay. Some of the very first decipherable words my son spoke came from the songs we sang each week in class. I’m so thankful that we found this program.” I love observing the growth of my students and the response that this remarkable program has on each of them. As a Sound Beginnings instructor, my philosophy is that children learn best through play! If you were to peek in on one of my classes, you would see children skipping, jumping, dancing, and engaging in full-body movement activities. For example, this semester we are learning all about our solar system. In one of our activities, the students fly to Jupiter in their rocket ships while listening to Gustav Holst’s “The Planets Orchestral Suite.” I love watching my kids blast off into space and engage in a classical music experience. Each 30-minute class is packed full of fun. Whether experimenting with instruments, marching to the beat with our lollipop drums, or engaging in a sing-a-long storybook, the class is structured to move quickly and hold children’s interest. One of the favorite segments involves a large, furry, purple puppet named Echo Edie. Each week we use our classroom microphones to mimic simple rhythms and vocal sounds that Echo Edie sings. Come play with us and witness the impactful fun of Sound Beginnings!”

The Village at Vistancia is full of good neighbors, whose kind acts make this community such a wonderful place to live. That’s why Vistancia and Print2order® are happy to offer this new program, It Takes a Village, to recognize good neighbors and share the stories of their selfless acts of kindness. As a resident of Vistancia we are asking you to share the stories about your neighbors who went above and beyond the normal neighborly duties. There is no act to small or insignificant; villages are built one kind act at a time. Each quarter we will select one story to spotlight in the Vistancia Living Magazine and in the spirit of giving back, Print2order will pay the quarterly assessments* for both the good neighbor and the neighbor who shared the story. The next winner will be announced in the June edition for the July assessments.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD NEIGHBOR YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE? Please submit your name and contact information, along with the resident’s name, address, and the reason you are nominating them. Winners are selected every quarter from the previous nominations. Show your neighbors you appreciate them today by submitting a nomination on www.myvistancia.com/villagenomination. ®

Liberty Welcomes Leo the Facility Dog By Liberty Yearbook Staff

Who would have known that cats and dogs could get along? The Liberty Lions welcomed a new staff member to the campus this spring—Leo, the facility dog. Handled by Christine Amor, one of the special education teachers, Leo has brought a palpable joy to the school.

Promote Your Business HERE!

A two-year-old yellow Labrador, with a unique foxtrot red coat, Leo could very well have ended up without a job. Canine Angel Service Teams, a group of service dog trainers located in Oregon, found that Leo had an endearing problem that could ruin his service dog candidacy: he whined. Amor, having worked with service/facility dogs before, reached out to Canine Angel Service Teams and was instantly connected with Leo. It was a great chance for Leo to still use his in-depth training as a service dog in the role of a facility dog. The key difference between service dogs and facility dogs is that facility dogs only have full-access rights to the facility which they are assigned. This means that Leo cannot enter any store or public location like a service dog usually would. He can; however, traverse Liberty to his heart’s content. While his issue with whining deemed him unfit for work as a service dog, he has found a perfect home at Liberty. “The staff just goes nuts for Leo,” said Amor, who cares for Leo at home with her two other dogs. “We’ve got one who made homemade organic pet treats for him, we have another one that’s talking about buying a bed so that he can come stay in their office…he’s ridden on the carts with security. He’s really just become our mascot.”

MADE

As for the students? Leo has been nothing short of life-changing in some instances. “There’s a kiddo here who has some emotional issues, and she stops me every single day and sometimes she says ‘this is how I make it through the day,’” Amor said. “I have kiddos who have major test anxiety, so I drop {Leo] off and he just sits with them while they’re taking their tests. He just takes that edge off.”

BREAK AT THE LAKE

Summer is around the corner, and we have a fun way to stay cool and close to home. Connect with friends and neighbors at the second annual Break at the Lake on May 5. This free event includes live music, drinks and food trucks, a cigar bar, yard games, and more. For those daring enough, a new feature this year is the H2-Woah – the tallest floating waterslide in the world. This event runs from 6-10 p.m. so the weather will be perfect lakeside. For more information, visit peoriaaz.gov/specialevents. While the event is free, there is a $6 gate fee per vehicle to enter the state park.

LANTERNS AT THE LAKE

Like something out of a fairy tale, the picturesque scene of lanterns entering the night sky is quite a remarkable sight. Experience this for yourself at this year’s Lanterns at the Lake Festival, held from 4-9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, sponsored by Pleasant Harbor. Gather the family to listen to live music, have your fill on a variety of food truck offerings, and light up life by sharing personal wishes, dreams and goals via personalized sky lanterns. At the perfect moment, everyone ignites their lantern then lets it take flight. Take advantage of the spring air and bring blankets or lawn chairs, but leave the coolers at home. Tickets are $25 and include park entry fee. Visit pleasantharbor.com/events for more information.

PARTY FOR THE PLANET

Peoria has made a serious commitment to sustainability. Although continuous education and outreach takes place throughout the year, April is the month that most of the celebrating occurs in honor of Earth Day. To celebrate, Peoria will host two events on April 21. Join fellow residents form 7-10 a.m. as they team up to clean up the New River Trail. Later that day, join us from 4-8 p.m. at Westwing Park for fun, food, and more at the Planetpalooza Earth Day Festival. Visit peoriaaz.gov/specialevents for more information.

SEE THE CITY IN ACTION

Get a behind-the-scenes look at how a city works through an interactive, citizens program called the Peoria Leadership Institute. This program offers an in-depth look at all operations of city government. Class members learn more about the city’s governmental structure, budget and finances, public works, utility, public safety operations, and more through interactions with management staff. This nine-week course is open to all Peoria residents 18 and older. Registration is free, but space is limited. Visit peoriaaz.gov/pli for more information or to enroll.

Preparing for Vacation PEORIA FIREFIGHTER AWARDED NATIONAL MEDAL OF VALOR Peoria Fire-Medical Department Engineer Stephen Gunn was one of 12 public safety officers to be awarded the National Medal of Valor in a ceremony at the White House on Feb. 20. The Medal of Valor, created in 2001 by Congress, recognizes extraordinary acts of heroism and bravery on the part of our nation's public safety officers. It is the highest award for valor a public safety officer can receive.

By Charles Bezio

North Precinct Commander Peoria Police Department

The weather is nice, spring break is here, and tax returns are in: it’s vacation season. Enjoy, you’ve earned it! But before you do, take a few simple precautions so your vacation does not end on a sour note. • Make sure you lock all doors and windows before you leave. • Have a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member keep an eye on your house while you are gone. Have them check in on your house, pick up any newspapers, packages, or door hangers that might be collecting in your yard or on your door.

In April 2016, Peoria Fire-Medical, along with other jurisdictions, responded to a house fire near 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road. Firefighter Gunn, the first boots on the ground and firefighter nearest to the home that was fully engulfed in flames, headed inside the home through a blown out window and crawled directly into the thick black smoke and flames.

• Use some inexpensive timers to turn on and off lights at night to give the appearance that someone is home.

For nearly 40 seconds, firefighter Gunn worked inside the blaze, found the trapped victim, and was able to pass them to the waiting hands of his captain before the room flashed over. Gunn was treated for burns at the Arizona Burn Center but was on duty for his next shift.

If you are taking a vacation this month, we at the Peoria Police Department wish you well and hope you have a great time. However, after you pack your bags and load up the car, take a few extra moments to make sure your home is protected while you are away.

• Sign up for a vacation watch by visiting the Peoria Police Department website. • Most of all, don’t post on social media that you are on vacation. I know we love to post great times, beautiful landscapes, and umbrella drinks, but you may just be giving burglars the location for their next job. When posting on social media, it goes out to your friends, but it might also be visible to their friends and, depending on their security setting, potentially to the world.
