A Meeting Under Our Big Top By Craig Pustejovsky

Community Manager

The big day is almost here, the Vistancia Village A Community Association Annual Meeting. On Tuesday, March 20, the community will come together to celebrate the Association. Dinner and sign-in will begin at 5 p.m., with the meeting starting at 6. How do we improve on last year’s great day at the beach theme? We are turning the Annual Meeting into the greatest show on earth! Have a fun night while learning more about your community, meet your neighbors, and participate in community governance at our circus-themed Annual Meeting. You will have the opportunity to hear about our accomplishments over the last year and what is in store for the rest of 2018. Most importantly, you will hear the results of the Board election. You should have received your Annual Meeting packet in the mail which included your paper ballot and information on how to vote online. Before you vote, educate yourself on the candidates by reading their short biography and completed candidate questionnaire on myvistancia.com. Once you’ve studied up on the candidates, be sure to mail your ballot back or vote online by Friday, March 16, so your vote is counted. I will see you all at the Annual Meeting!

It's Annual Meeting Time! By Daren Sanborn

Vice President | Board of Directors

In just a few weeks, it will be time for our Annual Meeting! For new residents, our annual meeting is held every March in the Mountain Vista Club gymnasium, with this year’s meeting occurring on Tuesday, March 20. The Annual Meeting is an event to celebrate everything we have accomplished as a community in the last 12 months, to elect two new board members, answer resident questions, and hopefully even win some prizes! Read Craig Pustejovsky’s article on page 7 for more information on the Annual Meeting. Have you considered becoming more involved in our community, but don't know where to start? One of the best ways to become involved is to join one of our many committees. The Board of Directors looks to these committees to investigate and make recommendations on many items, such as our recent change in landscape vendor. The Landscape Committee spent many hours narrowing the list to the top three choices for our landscape contract, visiting other communities, and ultimately recommending a change in vendor (read Rick Eckenrode’s article on the process on page 11). Committees meeting regularly include activities, landscape, communications, and design review. Not all committees currently have vacancies; please contact the Association office for more information on any committee you are interested in serving on. The Annual Meeting also will be the last meeting for two of our current board members, Kayte Comes and John Fairchild. I want to thank them both for all their hard work over the last two years on the Board. We will miss their experience, professionalism, and dedication to improving Vistancia. Thanks, John and Kayte!

Brush Up on Tips to Paint Your Home By Susan Claeys

Design Review Coordinator

Are you thinking of painting your home? Tired of looking at the faded paint, holes in the stucco, and pock-marked shutters? Painting your home will not only make it look like new, but it will also increase the value of your home more than the cost of painting it. If you are considering painting your home yourself, the tips below will help you save money and trouble. Use an Acrylic Latex Acrylic latex paints are less likely to harden, blister, crack, or allow mildew growth over the years, making them a better choice than oil-based exterior paints.

Use High Quality Paint With the intense heat of Arizona summers, durability is important. The sun's ultraviolet rays cause the chemical compounds in paint to degrade (particularly if you use an oilbased paint), which means it will lose its color and luster faster. Prep and Prime Treat mold, replace any rotten wood, repair cracks and holes in the stucco or similar finishes, caulk seams, and putty any holes. If you power wash to remove loose paint, make sure to let it dry completely to avoid trapping moisture under the paint. Using paint primer on problem areas is recommended by all paint professionals because it extends the life and improves the appearance. Paint When It’s Dry and 50-85 degrees

Use a Satin Finish

Extreme high or low temperatures can cause the paint to not bind together properly which can lead to cracking and peeling. Latex can also be difficult to apply at high temperatures, since it will dry too quickly to brush out properly.

Glossy and semi-glossy paints have durable finishes but also have a shiny, reflective quality that tends to show imperfections. A flat finish is easy to maintain but becomes chalky and mildewy. A satin finish gives your home a durable finish that works well on almost all surfaces.

Your home is one of your biggest investments that you will make and reflects your personal standards. By painting and maintaining the exterior of your home on a regular basis, it can be taken from mundane to inspiring. Be the inspiration in your neighborhood.

Inside the Landscape Maintenance RFP Process By Rick Eckenrode

Chair | Landscape Committee

On Jan. 23, our Board of Directors unanimously approved the Landscape Committee’s recommendation to award the Village’s landscape maintenance contract to DLC Resources. As chairman of the Landscape Committee, I was asked to write this month’s landscape article to elaborate on the process the committee took to reach this recommendation. This was not an easy decision to make and required months of work by all of us. I’m proud of the work done by my fellow members of the Landscape Committee: Cameron Gould, Alona Peters, Steve Tribble, and Julia Miller, who serves as the Board Liaison. We are dedicated to preserving the appearance of our community and hope you will agree our recommendation is best for the community. While the transition to DLC Resources is currently in progress, the committee’s work is certainly not done. DLC Resources submitted a detailed action plan that the committee will use as a template to grade and report their progress, and we will report back to the Board. The process began several months ago when the Landscape Committee recommended to the Board to put our landscape maintenance contract out to bid. The change of in size, landscape needs, and expectations of the community have changed,

and it was time to explore our options. We began by reviewing the existing landscape contract and request for proposal (RFP) and made effective changes to better reflect our expectations. The revised RFP was sent out to six potential landscape partners to receive their proposals. Once we reviewed the proposals, the Committee visited nine communities across the Valley to see the work performed by these companies. We spent considerable time walking through each community to grade them. After our walkthroughs, the committee selected three potential partners to present to the Landscape Committee and community on Jan. 9. These presentations gave those in attendance the chance to hear from each company and ask questions. The Landscape Committee met the next day to discuss the presentations and vote on a recommendation. We considered not just the financial impact of each proposal but also what we witnessed in walkthrough tours and presentations. Our decision to recommend DLC Resources was unanimous, and I presented our recommendation and answered questions from the Board and community at the Jan. 23 meeting. We look forward to a great partnership with DLC Resources and will have more information on them in the April issue.

An Eggs-cellent Time Awaits!

By Melissa Parsons

Lifestyle Director

Winter has flown by! It feels like it was just yesterday we were talking about Santa, hayrides, and holiday parties. Now that the warmer temperatures have returned (no more chilly nights), it’s time to take our fun outdoors and celebrate the season. Our annual spring celebration, Eggstravaganza, will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 31. We have some eggs-treme fun in store for everyone! Kids will be so hoppy hunting for eggs and jumping around in inflatables. Egg hunts will be done in groups by age; check the ages and corresponding hunt time below to see when your children will participate. Be sure to enter the egg toss, just don’t wind up with egg on your face! After you’ve had an eggs-ceptional time working up your appetite, pick up some kettle corn and other treats at Cactus Corn or get a hot dog meal at Big Meaty Dogs to fill yourself with delicious treats. And, what would a springtime celebration be without a visit from Peter Cottontail? Kids will be able to take pictures with their furry friend from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. What are you waiting for? Tickets are $5 per person and on sale now. Put a spring in your step and hop online or to the Lifestyle office to buy them today! MOMS Club Offers Support and More By Hannah Crosby Lifestyle Assistant

Here in Vistancia, we have our own group of superheroines: they make up the popular group known as the MOMS Club. These moms are not super because of their powers, though. What makes them super is their determination to support other moms and children in the community. The letters in “MOMS” stands for Moms Offering Moms Support. It is an international non-profit organization that supports single or married moms and moms of all ages. The Vistancia group is comprised of approximately 60 moms and their children that meet weekly for playgroups. These playgroups may consist of anything from crafts, desserts, playgrounds, games, or special outings in the city. Outings have included police and fire stations and Tolmachoff Farms, and Virginia Cornelius, vice president of administration for the MOMS Club, said they are planning some more extravagant outings in the future including Jumpstreet and Sky Zone. Besides the fun and entertainment they provide for moms in the club, they also have a Helping Hands Committee whose duty is to raise money to help local families in need. This past holiday season, the club was able to purchase presents to donate to single moms and their children.

Along with this charitable effort, they also support local elementary schools by giving teachers treats during teacher appreciation week, and made goody bags filled with soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, and other toiletries to donate to a local foster care organization. “We are always looking for service projects that we can be a part of. We are exceptionally excited about the Feed My Starving Children event this month we will be taking part in,” Virginia said. “We’re just happy to have the chance to help children in other parts of the world.” If you are a mom wanting to get involved in the community, make friendships, or seeking help, email vistanciamomsclubevents@gmail.com or visit vistanciamomsclub.com.

good neighbor recognition

I M P O R TA N T PHONE NUMBERS ASSOCIATION

The Village at Vistancia is full of good neighbors, whose kind acts make this community such a wonderful place to live. That’s why Vistancia and Print2order® are happy to offer this new program, It Takes a Village, to recognize good neighbors and share the stories of their selfless acts of kindness. As a resident of Vistancia we are asking you to share the stories about your neighbors who went above and beyond the normal neighborly duties. There is no act to small or insignificant; villages are built one kind act at a time. Each quarter we will select one story to spotlight in the Vistancia Living Magazine and in the spirit of giving back, Print2order will pay the quarterly assessments* for both the good neighbor and the neighbor who shared the story. The next winner will be announced in the June edition for the July assessments. Find out who won this quarter on page 23.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD NEIGHBOR YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE? Please submit your name and contact information, along with the resident’s name, address, and the reason you are nominating them. Winners are selected every quarter from the previous nominations. Show your neighbors you appreciate them today by submitting a nomination on www.myvistancia.com/villagenomination. ®

Changing of the Guard: Liberty’s New Assistant Principal

Thank You for Your Tax Credit Donations!

By Endia Fontanez HS Senior

By Dustin Hamman Principal

The culture at Liberty High school is ever-changing, especially in the past year. From a brand-new principal to the addition of an on-campus facilities dog, changes have been coming fast and often for the Lions. The most recent change is the addition of the newest assistant principal, Mrs. Katie Rituper, who oversees attendance and discipline. Before coming to Liberty, Mrs. Rituper worked for more than a decade at Raymond S. Kellis High School, teaching math and leadership classes, coaching track and cross country, sponsoring clubs, and working as the director of their “Cougartown” leadership camp.

We would like to thank all the local community members and families that designated their Tax Credit donations to Lake Pleasant Elementary. We received almost $8,000 in tax credit donations just in the month of December alone! You can make Tax Credit donations all year. Visit peoriaunified. org/taxcredit to donate and designate to Lake Pleasant Elementary. Thank you for your donations! If you have a kindergarten student who will be entering school in August, we want to invite you to attend our Connect to Kinder Night from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, March 5. This is a great event for parents and incoming kindergarten students to attend. Families will receive a packet of information on how to prepare your child for school, hear about the school day schedule, receive a campus tour, get your child’s first school picture, and have milk and cookies! Online enrollment will be going live on March 5, so if you are new to the area, registration can be done online. If you need help or want to enroll in person, please call us at 623-773-6575 or stop by Lake Pleasant Elementary from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays.

“Everyone kept asking me, are you ready for it to be different? To which I always said ‘yes, I’m ready,’” Mrs. Rituper said in regard to her new job. “The main difference that I see is that there’s just more kids. There’s at least 400 more students than my previous school, but I’ve enjoyed it every day. Every day has been a new adventure.” Some Liberty students know of Mrs. Rituper only from her frequent appearances on morning announcements where she has been featured discussing topics such as dress code and attendance. “Dress code and attendance rules have always been there, it’s just being enforced a little bit more than it had been in the past. With me being the person making those announcements, it looks like the ideas are all my own, but a lot of that was already in the works before I was even hired,” she said. “As far as any other new changes that we’re looking at making, it’ll hopefully just impact the culture of the school in a positive manner by affecting those relationships with students and increasing visibility for safety.” Mrs. Rituper has greatly enjoyed talking to and building relationships with Liberty students both in her office and out on duty, and she looks forward to seeing the school’s culture continuously improve and become even greater than it already is.

Promote Your Business HERE!

WELCOMING SPIRIT… AND VINTAGE CARS…HELP BUILD COMMUNITY We accept submissions on myvistancia.com for our It Takes a Village good neighbor recognition program. This month, we recognize this quarter’s winner, Harry Ostwald, nominated by his neighbor, Rick Brady. For being selected, Harry, as well as nominator Rick, will receive $258 toward their secondquarter assessments.

LOOK!

In nominating Harry, Rick wrote:

YO U

“Harry is always willing to help his neighbors. He has called me a few times to let me know when something was going on in the area. Recently, the police responded to our alarm and he was confronted as they pulled through the gate while he was working in his front yard. He made it a point to let us know by calling us promptly.

MADE

He makes it a point to get to know all our new neighbors to make them feel welcome to our neighborhood. He is there if you need a tool, looking for a contractor, or to just talk about life. He instills that sense of community in our neighborhood that I remember from days gone by, which was one of the primary reasons we choose to relocate to Vistancia. That restored 1974 Ford of his also brings back some fond memories!” ®

New Restaurants & Retail Coming By Bridget Binsbacher

Mesquite District Representative | Peoria City Council

Bringing high quality, unique restaurants is top of mind for many of us. A new, neighborhood-centric retail and restaurant development is underway at the Southeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road. The first phase is 15,000 square feet, but it has the potential to expand to a 70,000 square-foot development. Called 83 Marketplace, it is designed to be a dynamic high-end retail center with shopping, indoor and outdoor dining, specialty retail businesses, and amenities that will complement the fabric of the community and bring additional economic, employment, and revenue opportunities to the surrounding area. We expect tenant announcements in the next few months.

MAYOR STATE OF THE CITY Every year, the mayor delivers the state of the city. This year’s address will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the Arizona Broadway Theatre. A portion of the proceeds from this event will support Bloom 365, a Peoria non-profit organization dedicated to preventing teen dating abuse and sexual assault by combining education, peer-to-peer advocacy, and activism. You Are Our Eyes and Ears By Charles Bezio

North Precinct Commander Peoria Police Department

The Peoria Police Department prides itself on being engaged with the community. We make every effort to listen to our citizens and be responsive to the crime and livability issues affecting them. However, no matter how hard we try, we will never know all the neighborhoods as well as those who live there. That is why we rely on you to be our eyes and ears. Nobody knows your streets, parks, and surrounding areas better than you do. You are familiar with your neighbors, the cars on the street, and the people in the neighborhood. You also recognize when something is out of place such as a stranger walking down the street or a car parked down the block. We all possess that instinct that tells us when something or someone is out of place or is a possible threat. It makes us keenly aware of the situation and causes us to be cautious and watchful. It is this sense that protects us from becoming prey to some predator looking to hurt us or steal our belongings. The police rely on your keen sense of what might seem out of place or suspicious to help us prevent or intercede in criminal activity. It is your calls that summon us to check on suspicious people or circumstances so we can take steps to uncover nefarious activity before crime happens. Please be our eyes and ears and call us the next time something or someone makes the hair on your neck stand up or has you feeling like something is amiss. Together, we can prevent someone from becoming a victim.
