Beating the Heat & Boredom of Summer By Craig Pustejovsky

Community Manager

For many, the July 4 holiday means family and fireworks to celebrate the freedom we enjoy and our country’s birthday. But, it also means that summer is in the homestretch and the roar of “I’m bored” from kids will soon turn to back-toschool shopping. Don’t pack up the bathing suit and break out the backpack yet, though. There’s still plenty of fun to be had this summer within the community to cure the boredom blues. Our Fantastic Friday Summer Series kicks off Friday, July 6, in the Mountain Vista Club Clubhouse. There’s a new event for kids every Friday that’ll keep your kids entertained on a warm Friday morning. See page 12 for more information on the Summer Series. Our Teen Summer Series continues with our Nerf Wars on July 5. Dozens of local teens came out to Water Wars on June 14 for water games and a 36-foot high water slide, and the war continues inside the Gymnasium with Nerf guns. For just $5, your teen will get two hours of fun, lunch, and a cool, safe place to spend the day after the holiday with their friends. And, don’t forget about our great amenities. The Gymnasium is open from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily to shoot hoops, play pickleball, and stay cool. If you’re looking for an organized game, stop by the pickleball club on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, or sign up for Thursday evening’s basketball league. See the calendar on page 26 for times of each of these great sports. The water slides at the Mountain Vista Club pools are open six days a week through July. If you’re staying close to home to celebrate July 4, take in extended slide hours from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., leaving time to head out and check out local fireworks celebrations. Have a great and safe rest of the summer!

Don’t Believe Everything You Read By Daren Sanborn

Treasurer |Board of Directors

In today’s day and age, getting an answer to questions like the ones above about issues in our community is just a few clicks away. But, it’s where you get the information from that can go a long way in determining the accuracy. Between Facebook and Nextdoor, there is no shortage of conversations and questions going on about the community. When searching for the most accurate information, please remember that we have great resources in place to get the answer you are looking for. Your best bet is to pick up the phone and call the Association Office to speak with a member of the management team. If you’d rather find the answer online, our community website, redesigned and relaunched just over a year ago, has many of the answers you may be looking for or can direct you to the correct management team member who can assist you. Additionally, the Board of Directors has an email address where you can email us directly: TheVillageAtVistanciaBoard@gmail.com. Due to open meeting laws, the board cannot discuss issues or questions you have over email, but you can use this email to send a message directly to the Board. If the issue requires the Board’s attention, we will forward it to the community manager to add it to the agenda of the next Board meeting so it can be discussed in an open forum by the full Board. I encourage all of you to visit myvistancia.com and use the search feature in the top right of the website before asking specific questions to the social media community. If you do ask a question on social media, please keep in mind that while you may get an answer more quickly, you may not always get the correct information.

I Love It! It’s Perfect! Now Let’s Change It By Susan Claeys

Design Review Coordinator

Now that you live in the home of your dreams, you may be thinking about ways to make it even more perfect. Maybe you’re thinking about building a pergola for evening backyard parties or adding artificial turf for the touch of green you love. You may just want to repaint the exterior of your home or add a stone veneer. The good news is that the community’s Design Review Committee approves modifications like these all the time. The first step in this process is to consult the Design Guidelines on myvistancia.com. If you still have questions about what is allowable and approvable, or what needs to be submitted for review, call me at the Association Office so we can discuss your project. Next, complete a Modification Application, which is also available on the website, or paper copies are available at the Association Office. You will want to note as many details as possible - measurements, setbacks from walls, colors - and include photos, drawings, and maps. The more information you give in your application packet, the fewer questions the Design Review Committee will have. Request Approved! You may be surprised to learn that almost any exterior changes you want to make to your home and property does require DRC review. This ensures your requests are approved by the Design Guidelines, and you won’t receive a violation notice post-construction. The following are some of the most popular submittal: • Exterior paint (even if you are keeping the same paint scheme on your home) • Security/screen doors • Gates • Landscape installations (front and rear) • Pools • Pergolas and shade sails The Design Review Committee meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month to review applications. All applications are due the Friday before the Design Review Committee meeting. You’ll hear a decision to your application via email within three business days of the meeting; if it is approved, you’ll be on your way! Making it Perfect (Again) I encourage you to call me for guidance with your modifications. I am happy to work with you to make the process as smooth as possible so that you can begin enjoying the home of your dreams…all over again.

IT’S A BIRD…IT’S A PLANE…IT’S…OUR NEWEST FORM OF COMMUNICATIONS!

By Adam Rosen

Communications Coordinator

Being just down the road from an Air Force base, you may often see things soaring through the sky. While we haven’t invested in a jet or helicopter, we’ve recently added the ability to take our community communications to new heights. In May, the Communications Committee approved the purchase of a drone to enhance our communications. If you were at our Summer Kickoff celebration on May 24, or you were tuned into Facebook Live during the event, you saw the premiere of our live drone footage as we looked over hundreds enjoying the Mountain Vista Club pools and water slides. If you haven’t seen the footage, visit Facebook.com/ VistanciaVillageAssociation to check it out! The drone gives us great overhead shots of community events and the community’s common areas that can’t be achieved other ways. It both broadcasts and records video in 4K and takes photos in high definition. With this new technology, you’ll be able to enjoy our events from a new perspective while taking in the amazing views of the Sonoran Desert and surrounding landscape. Unlike companies who want to use drone technology to deliver purchases and pizzas, this one is strictly for communications purposes. It won’t be hovering over your home to inspect your yard and will not be delivering violations to your doorstep. Next time you’re at one of our outdoor events and you look to the sky, give us a wave and see yourself on camera!

Preparing for Monsoon Season By Dean Rodrigues

DLC Resources Field Manager

While we welcome the summer rains, the vigorous monsoon storms present some challenges for plant material. As your landscape management provider, we are prepared to deal with the effects of monsoon events. DLC believes a little prevention can go a long way — especially when it comes to trees. Although strong storms and microbursts can damage a tree at any time, the risks can be minimized with canopy thinning. This is specific pruning that trims away branches so that the wind can pass through the canopy, making the trees more resistant to strong wind. After monsoons hit, the emphasis shifts to cleanup and repair. Typically, summer storms occur late in the day after crews have left for the day. For immediate emergency aid, we have personnel on-call 24 hours a day. These workers are equipped to deal with the most pressing effects of the storm, such as trees blocking streets or sidewalks. Full-scale cleanup generally begins the following morning. Depending on the extent of the damage, we may work with management team to adjust normal maintenance activities to remove debris and perform repairs. We might also propose bringing on extra personnel to expedite the storm cleanup. In spite of the damage these summer storms can cause, there is a silver lining to the monsoon clouds: moisture! The monsoon presents us all with a great opportunity to save water. We assess the amount of water each storm brings and suspend or adjust irrigation schedules appropriately. Not only is rainwater free, it is also superior to irrigation water due to its lower alkalinity. In addition to providing moisture, the rainwater helps leach accumulated salts away from the roots of shrubs, trees, and turf. ASSESS YOUR YARD You can benefit from similar pre-monsoon practices in your yard. Assess your trees and have dead branches removed. If the foliage in your tree is exceedingly thick and heavy, have the tree pruned. Following a storm, check your irrigation controller. Power outages can reset irrigation clocks and schedules, and it may not be appropriate for the weather. DLC’s main priority after monsoon storm damage is to get the community looking and functioning well again as soon as possible.

Pickleball Serves an Ace in Friendship By Hannah Crosby

Lifestyle Assistant

One of the greatest parts of this community is seeing strangers come together, form a common bond, and transform from neighbors to friends and family. Michael “Chia” Petz and his son Zack went from strangers to family with the pickleball club. Here is their story… “My wife Jennifer had suggested teaching our son Zack, 19, how to play tennis. My son is ultra-shy, so I didn’t know if he could handle the anxiety and social pressure of tennis. The flyer for pickleball peaked my interest. It seemed low-threat and fun for everyone. I went to check it out and was amazed by the kindness of the players: this was the place to take Zack to. I proposed the idea and he was willing to try it. Just before we went in he asked me if we could be on the same team. I told him that I will always be there to protect him. We braved the entry into the gym, a new environment not knowing what to expect. The group came to say hello and wanted to get us out on the court and have fun. Ray and Kathy, whom I call our pickleball founding fathers, introduced us and made us feel like we belong. Jeannie showed us how to hit and score. Frank and Karla showed us how to have fun and that it was a nonthreatening environment. Terri and Ken offered their paddles to use. We were treated like we’d been here forever. I told the group, individually, about Zack and they would need to call the score for him. They told me, don’t worry about a thing dad, we got this.” After an hour of getting into the groove of playing together, Zack and I were split up on different teams. They did exactly what they should do if he were their own; especially with Dean and Gene’s guidance. They were amazing! As a macho dad I couldn’t show on the outside what I was feeling on the inside, but I know I had the biggest grin on my face. My son was interacting with the group. This was a huge success and made me a proud dad! I can’t express enough of my gratitude to the pickleball group. To each of them I say a very heartfelt thank you. Zack and I are so appreciative for welcoming us to the family. It has brought us closer together and allowed Zack to see there are great people with us in the community.”

good neighbor recognition

The Village at Vistancia is full of good neighbors, whose kind acts make this community such a wonderful place to live. That’s why Vistancia and Print2order® are happy to offer this new program, It Takes a Village, to recognize good neighbors and share the stories of their selfless acts of kindness. As a resident of Vistancia we are asking you to share the stories about your neighbors who went above and beyond the normal neighborly duties. There is no act to small or insignificant; villages are built one kind act at a time. Each quarter we will select one story to spotlight in the Vistancia Living Magazine and in the spirit of giving back, Print2order will pay the quarterly assessments* for both the good neighbor and the neighbor who shared the story. The next winner will be announced in the September edition for the October assessments.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD NEIGHBOR YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE? Please submit your name and contact information, along with the resident’s name, address, and the reason you are nominating them. Winners are selected every quarter from the previous nominations. Show your neighbors you appreciate them today by submitting a nomination on www.myvistancia.com/villagenomination. ®

*Blackstone residents receive $258 toward their assessments.

We continue to work, plan, and build throughout the summer to prepare for next year. Our staff recently took part in two full days of seven habits training as the first phase of our “The Leader in Me rollout. Teachers and staff immersed themselves in the training and have a greater understanding of how to apply the components of leadership with students in the classroom. We have more work to do but have gotten off to a great start. Take some time to relax and rejuvenate this summer. Stay safe around water and on any trips and vacations you may take. We look forward to seeing you all again real soon! School starts back Aug. 8; you will receive information later this month about our Meet the Teacher event and other welcome activities. Have a great summer!

New Development at Lake Pleasant Parkway and Happy Valley Road By Bridget Binsbacher

Mesquite District Representative | Peoria City Council

An exciting new development is planned for Lake Pleasant Parkway, near the southeast corner of Happy Valley Road. With a “main-street” feel, Sunrise Promenade will offer a modern and inviting design that integrates a new concept of patio rental homes with a lively mix of retail and restaurant spaces. The proposed development is slated to include two major tenants with attached shops. One of the targeted tenants is Aldi, a specialty grocer and a sister company of Trader Joe’s. Black Rock Coffee is also being considered for the development, and a local restaurateur is proposing a new native grill concept. Additional retailers have yet to be named but will include specialty shops catering to the discerning lifestyle of north Peoria. The residential area will integrate a new concept of patio rental homes for luxury living that minimizes the burdensome lifestyle of larger, traditional, single-family homes. Similar residences throughout the Valley have gained tremendous popularity in recent years and this unique urban living design will cater to a variety of lifestyles. This development is in the planning phase and we will release more details as they become available.

PEORIA LIBRARIES OFFER WI-FI ON THE FLY Broadband internet connections are available to most homes in the Valley. However, cost, data limits and other factors may limit a family’s ability to access high-speed internet connections. The City of Peoria developed the Wi-Fi on the Fly program to offer patrons more data. The program allows library patrons 18 years or older that have a library card in good standing to check out a Wi-Fi enabled mobile hotspot for one week with up to two renewals. Visit the library or call 623-773-7555 for more information. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN YOUR COMMUNITY? HELP KEEP TRASH AND RECYCLING TRUCKS ON SCHEDULE The daily garbage truck schedule runs on tight deadlines and complex routes that are driven by mapping and distance algorithms. Homeowners can help keep things running smoothly by following some simple guidelines.

• Bag and tie all waste, including yard waste, and place it in your container • Place your containers curbside by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day of collection • Place both containers out on the same day, four feet apart, with the rear wheels against the curb

Curfew Keeps Our Kids Safe By Peoria Police Department

city briefs

CITY NAMES NEW NORTH PEORIA PARK The City of Peoria announced the new community park located in north Peoria will be named “Paloma Community Park.” The park will be located east of Lake Pleasant Parkway, just south of the Loop 303. Construction is set to begin in the fall with a target completion date of spring 2020. The Spanish word “paloma,” which means “dove,” refers to a unique geographical feature in the area. The New River Wash splits the East Wing and West Wing Mountain Preserves, making the area appear as it has two dove’s wings. The 85 acres of initial park development will include tournament grade baseball and soccer fields, multi-use open turf, a fishing lake, multi-generational inclusive playgrounds and splash pad, group and individual picnic ramadas, a multi-cell dog park, lighted pickleball courts, and supporting park maintenance, restroom, and concessions buildings. The park will include numerous hard and soft surface walking loops, and a trailhead for access into the larger New River open space. Future trail connectivity to Peoria's Westwing Mountain trail system is already in the planning stages.

During the summer months, we often see an increase in late night activity involving people under the age of 18. These activities include loud parties, underage drinking, DUIs, and low-level crimes like criminal damage and theft. This is obviously associated with the fact that children are out of school and have more time on their hands. As a result, we at the Peoria Police Department increase enforcement of curfew laws to deter and prevent these activities. Knowing the city’s curfew laws helps make sure children are at home safe late at night and don’t have to experience an unpleasant contact with their friendly neighborhood police officer. In the City of Peoria, it is unlawful for any person 16 of 17 years of age to be on any public street, alley, or other public place between midnight-5 a.m. unless accompanied by a legal custodial adult. Minors under the age of 16 are not permitted to be on any public street, alley, or other public place between 10 p.m.-5 a.m. unless accompanied by a legal custodial adult. The only exceptions are circumstances where the minor is directly in route to their residence from their place of employment or an authorized function sponsored by a church, education institution, or civil organization, or in cases of emergency. (City Code 13-71) It is also against Peoria laws for a parent, guardian, or person having legal custody of a minor to allow or fail to prevent their child from being in violation of curfew laws. A violation of the Peoria curfew is a class one misdemeanor (criminal offense) and could result in a fine of $50 and community service for the first offense. If you have a minor child, please make sure you understand the laws and have your children home before curfew. This way you know they are safe and you won’t get a late night call from the police to come pick up your child.
