Director’s Message

Dear Friends,

I would like to extend my heartiest warm wishes to the entire Vidya & Child family – staff & vendors, volunteers & partners, donors & associates and all other well wishers.

Without their support, Vidya & Child would not have grown to what it is today. At 19 years, we are as young as we are mature, as vibrant as we are mellow, as agile as we are steady and as much in need of speediness as we are patient. And somewhere in the middle of all this action the year just passed by.

Just as we saw our children moving to yet another academic year, with the older ones choosing their academic streams and the still older ones opting for their chosen careers, we also saw Vidya & Child grow into an organisation with a team of 140 people relentlessly working to make a difference in the lives of more than 1300 children.

What we count as amongst one of the significant achievements for this year; Vidya & Child got registered as a school with the UP Board for classes from Nursery to Class 8th and also with the National Institute of Open Schooling to cater to overage children.

Internally, the resolve to remain focussed towards each child, and ensuring that no child gets left behind, saw us completing a massive exercise in documentation – the All Parameters Child-wise Tracker - that captures all the details about each child, his family, his strength areas, challenges - academics or otherwise across all the centres. The exercise was converted into a new process that was used at the classroom level to make a difference in the way that it directly impacts the child. It ensured that the entire organisation, across all functions, has the same focus and is geared up to work towards it.

What started in 2014-15 as a strengthening exercise has taken the shape of a 5-year plan that looks at taking each employee along the learning curve to ensure that each of us are in alignment with the overall objectives of the organisation; each of us understand what is critical in everything that we do and also be aware of the process to address that criticality.

Vidya & Child believes that it has a far greater responsibility and would like to take its learning and processes to other organisations so that it can reach out to more children in need. Just as it is important to spread its seeds of learning far and wide, it is also imperative that it continues to nurture its core. Therefore, training of all staff and building their capabilities into their strength areas is integral to our planning and a matter of pride for us.

Vidya & Child believes in working from within the community. All our project centers are located in the basti or village from where we work. This helps us to stay connected with the people we work for - the children, their families as well as their neighbourhood. It also allows us to understand and appreciate the hardships faced by these families.

GLIMPSES OF OUR JOURNEY

Vidya & Child embarked on its journey in 1998 with the aim of making a difference in the lives of children belonging to socio-economically marginalized sections of the society. Majority of them are first generation learners and have parents who are illiterate/ semi-literate and work as domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-pullers, vendors, plumbers, carpenters and so on.

In keeping with its belief that the purpose of education is to build a platform for a child to learn, grow and explore, the motto of “Exploring the uniqueness in every child� has formed the foundation of every thought and action in Vidya & Child. A creative learning environment encompassing academic, artistic, exploratory as well as sports opportunities continue to be provided for ensuring holistic development of each child. Every challenge in our journey has provided us a deeper insight and a renewed vigour to move further in our endeavour to broaden our reach to more underprivileged children without compromising on the quality of intervention being provided.

Over a span of 19 years, the outreach has seen a quantum jump from 2 children to the current strength of over 1300 students. Dedicated staff across 5 centres (Delhi NCR & Bihar) diligently follow a process-driven, child-centric approach. Financial, academic and mentoring support are further supported by Life Skills and Arts & Performing Arts Programmes along with preventive Health Camps.

The collaborative effort of students and their parents along with the support of Vidya & Child team has achieved numerous milestones, where each success has ensured a brighter future for the children and their families.

Vidya & Child alumni list is proud to have students who have completed their education and are working with reputed companies. There are many others who are pursuing their chosen fields along with a part-time job in order to support their families.

Creative Endeavours & Celebrations of Important Days

National Education Day & Independence Day A&PA Creative Showcase Children of each centre displayed their creations and performances in various fields such as Paintings, Pottery , Music, Dance, Theatre, Yoga, Karate, Puppetry, Art & Craft, Recycling as well as Science Models.

Vidya & Child caters to the entire education lifecycle of a child.

Academic Intervention is achieved through the School Programme, After School Support Programme, NIOS Programme and Foundation Programme. Self Exploration, Perspective Development & Creative Expression are developed through Life Skills, Sports and Arts & Performing Arts. PROJECT IMPACT 

When Vidya & Child was set up, not many parents were keen to enroll their children as they did not fully understand the importance of education.  Over the years, the awareness campaigns and counseling done by Vidya & Child has helped to change the perception of the community.  Numerous Success stories of Vidya & Child alumni students also serve as an inspiration for the other children & parents in the community

Perspective towards Education



Over the years, there has been a shift in the nature of employment. Earlier, the community members were working as plumbers, shopkeepers, vendors, rickshaw pullers, domestic help, labourers etc.  Today, their next generation is breaking barriers and working across 17 diverse careers ranging from Engineering to Architecture. 

Broader Outlook





Nature of Employment

Change in the Saving Pattern of the community as the realization of planning for the future has gained importance.  Through regular exposure visits and participation in external events, the beneficiaries have gained more knowledge, awareness and a broader outlook.

A successful career is no longer limited to only Engineering or Medicine.

Parents are no longer reluctant to send their daughters to school. They are now even willing to support higher education for them. Today, some girls are also studying in hostels out of town.

Through PTMs and home visits, parents are counseled to treat their sons & daughters at par with respect to delegating work, giving time to study etc.

Gender Equality



Languages & Communication

Majority of the inhabitants being migratory population, there was an increased dependence on the use of regional languages in the past years.  Today, their language skills have broadened to include English & Hindi due to English medium teaching & Reinforcement through Spoken English classes and Hindi Language Development activities.  Boost in personality of students due to knowledge & better expression in English, thus making them more confident at their workplace also. Increased awareness in the

Health & community about the Hygiene importance of health and hygiene due to the awareness campaigns and regular health camps organised by Vidya & Child to cover the immunisation requirements and basic health parameters of its students.
